Infrared laser technology offers an efficient and environmentally friendly method of bonding thermoplastics. Innovations in the delivery of laser power are making infrared lasers highly suitable for a wide range of plastics processing applications, including transmission gear welding and cutting. Two of such devices that are growing in popularity are solid state lasers and fiber optic beams, which make various bonding and surface treatment processes possible.

Thermoplastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene or any engineering plastic with low thermal resistance can be joined using solar energy harnessed through a solar energy concentrator (SEC). The length of time for completion of the process depends on absorption, transmission and reflectivity of the thermoplastics. The advantages of utilizing the SEC are minimal running and maintenance costs, pollutant-free energy source and ease of use. The SEC may benefit from the use of filters for enhanced flexibility.
