We report on the first 4 × 4 switch matrix with digital optical switches as switch elements. The matrix is arranged in a tree structure, and comprises 24 switch elements and is pigtailed and packaged.

Abstract

Low driving voltage or current digital optical switches based on carrier effects in InP-GaInAsP have been fully demonstrated for both TE and TM polarisations of light. Crosstalk better than 12.1 and 15.2 dB have been obtained for polarisation independent operation with, respectively, a voltage as low as -10 V and a current as low as 6 mA. These functionalities have been demonstrated in the 1.52-1.57 mu m wavelength range which is suitable for multiwavelength system applications. >

Abstract

A Y-junction digital optical switch based on InP/GaInAsP has been realised and operated using either carrier injection or carrier depletion. the switch functions with both TE and TM polarised light. In the case of current injection, 30 mA is enough to obtain a crosstalk up to 20 dB for TM polarisation and 10 dB for TE polarisation. >
