Continuum reverberation mapping is widely used in studying the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Some indirect evidence and simulations have indicated that the diffuse continuum, especially the strong Balmer continuum from the broad-line region, may contribute to the continuum in the u / U band. Here, we present direct evidence for this contribution. In this work, we apply the ICCF-Cut method to continuum reverberation mapping to extract the possible diffuse continuum light curves of six AGNs, using high-cadence, high-quality, and multiband observations. We find the existence of an outer component out of the accretion disk for each of the six AGNs in the Swift U band. Meanwhile, similar results can be derived with the JAVELIN Photometric Reverberation Mapping Model for four of them. The lags of the outer components are consistent with the predicted Balmer continuum lags, which are about half of the H β lag values. Our result directly reinforces the understanding that an outer component, especially the Balmer continuum in the rest-frame u / U band, can contribute significantly to the continuum reverberation lags of AGNs. Accretion of black holes at near-Eddington or super-Eddington rates represents the most powerful episode driving black hole growth, potentially occurring across various types of objects. However, the physics governing accretion and jet–disk coupling in such states remains unclear, primarily due to the difficulty in detecting associated jets, which may emit extremely weakly or exhibit episodic behavior. Only a few near/super-Eddington systems have demonstrated radio activity, and it remains uncertain whether jets exist and what their properties are in super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources. This uncertainty stems mainly from the complex radio emission mix, which includes contributions from jets, star formation activity, photoionized gas, accretion disk wind, and coronal activity. In this work, we conducted high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry observations to investigate jets in the highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert I system I Zw 1. Our observations successfully revealed small-scale jets (with a linear size of ∼45 pc) at both 1.5 and 5 GHz, based on the high radio brightness temperature, radio morphology, and spectral index distribution. Additionally, the parsec-scale jet observed in I Zw 1 displays a knotted morphology reminiscent of other sources accreting at similar rates. In summary, the high accretion rates and jet properties observed in the AGN I Zw 1 may support the AGN/X-ray binary analogy in this extreme state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In our previous work on broadband photometric reverberation mapping (PRM), we proposed the interpolated cross-correlation function (ICCF)-Cut process to obtain the time lags of the H α emission line from two broadband lightcurves via subtracting the continuum emission from the line band. Extending the work, we enlarge our sample to the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) database. We adopt two criteria to select 123 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with sufficient variability and smooth light curves from 3537 AGNs at z < 0.09 with more than 100 epoch observations in the g and r bands from the ZTF database. We calculate the H α time lags for 23 of them that have previous spectroscopic reverberation mapping (SRM) results using the ICCF-Cut, Just Another Vehicle for Estimating Lags In Nuclei (JAVELIN), and χ 2 methods. Our obtained H α time lags are slightly larger than the H β time lags, which is consistent with the previous SRM results and the theoretical model of the AGN broad-line region. The comparisons between the SRM and PRM lag distributions and between the subtracted emission line light curves indicate that after selecting AGNs with the two criteria, combining the ICCF-Cut, JAVELIN, and χ 2 methods provides an efficient way to get the reliable H α lags from the broadband PRM. Such techniques can be used to estimate the black hole masses of a large sample of AGNs in large multiepoch photometric sky surveys such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time and the survey from the Wide Field Survey Telescope in the near future. The environment of a γ -ray burst has an important influence on the evolution of jet dynamics and its afterglow. Here we investigate the afterglow polarizations in a stratified medium with the equal arrival time surface (EATS) effect. Polarizations of multiband afterglows are predicted. The effects of the parameters of the stratified medium on the afterglow polarizations are also investigated. We found the influences of the EATS effect on the afterglow polarizations become important for off-axis detections and polarization degree (PD) bumps move to later times with the EATS effect. Even if the magnetic field configurations, jet structure, and observational angles are fixed, polarization properties of the jet emission could still evolve. Here, we assume a large-scale ordered magnetic field in the reverse-shock region and a two-dimensional random field in the forward-shock region. Then, PD evolution is mainly determined by the evolution of the f 32 parameter (the flux ratio between the reverse-shock region and forward-shock region) at the early stage and by the evolution of the bulk Lorentz factor γ at the late stage. Through the influences on the f 32 or γ, the observational energy band, observational angles, and the parameters of the stratified medium will finally affect the afterglow polarizations. The plasma-beta effect on the n = 1 resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field penetration in purely radio-frequency (RF) wave heated discharges has been investigated in EAST. The experimental results show that the dependence of the threshold RMP coil current for field penetration, I RMP,th , on the total absorbed power P tot scales as approximately I RMP,th ∝ P tot 0.30 , indicating that the error-field tolerance is improved with increasing RF power. This is benefited by the increased electron perpendicular flow dominated by a counter-current electron diamagnetic flow with increasing RF power. However, theoretical scaling in cylindrical geometry overestimates the power index. Assuming an additional term β N α β N for the normalized beta in the scaling, it is shown that the fitted α β N from the experimental observation is around −1, indicating a degradation effect of plasma beta. To clarify the underlying physics of the plasma-beta effect that was not included in the theoretical scaling in cylindrical geometry, the MARS-Q code with full toroidal geometry is employed for simulation of nonlinear field penetration (Liu et al 2013 Phys. Plasmas 20 042503). The MARS-Q simulation results reproduce the β N dependence well, and hence the P tot scaling of the threshold current in experimental observations. The main reason for this is that the net total torque, which is mainly contributed by the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV), increases with increasing plasma β N . The results demonstrate that the nonlinear toroidal coupling effect via NTV torque plays an important role in determining field penetration, even in cases with relatively low β N ∈ [ 0.3 , 0.6 ] , which is far less than the no-wall beta limit. We present the first near-IR spectroscopy and joint analyses of multiwavelength observations for SDSS J082747.14+425241.1, a dust-reddened, weak broad emission-line quasar (WLQ) undergoing a remarkable broad-absorption line (BAL) transformation. The systemic redshift is more precisely measured to be z = 2.070 ± 0.001 using H β compared to z = 2.040 ± 0.003 using Mg ii from the literature, signifying an extreme Mg ii blueshift of 2140 ± 530 km sâˆ'1 relative to H β. Using the H β -based single-epoch scaling relation with a systematic uncertainty of 0.3 dex, its black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratio are estimated to be M BH ∼ 6.1 Ă— 108 M ⊙ and λ Edd ∼ 0.71, indicative of being in a rapidly accreting phase. Our investigations confirm the WLQ nature and the LoBAL â†' HiBAL transformation, along with a factor of 2 increase in the Mg ii +Fe ii emission strength and a decrease of 0.1 in E (B âˆ' V) over two decades. The kinetic power of this LoBAL wind at R ∼ 15 pc from its BH is estimated to be ∼43% of the Eddington luminosity, sufficient for quasar feedback upon its host galaxy albeit with an order-of-magnitude uncertainty. This quasar provides a clear example of the long-sought scenario where LoBAL quasars are surrounded by dust cocoons, and wide-angle nuclear winds play a key role in the transition of red quasars evolving into the commonly seen blue quasars. "Changing-look" active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) are a newly discovered class of AGNs that show the appearance (or disappearance) of broad emission lines within short timescales (months to years), and are often associated with dramatic changes in their continuum emissions. They provide us with an unprecedented chance to directly investigate the host galaxy properties with minimal contamination from the luminous central engine during the turn-off state, which is difficult for normal luminous AGNs. In this work, for the first time, we systematically characterize the stellar populations and star formation histories of host galaxies for 26 turn-off CL-AGNs using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. We find that the stellar populations of CL-AGNs are similar to those of normal AGNs, except that the intermediate stellar populations contribute more fractions. We estimate their stellar velocity dispersions (σ⋆) and black hole masses (MBH,vir), and find that CL-AGNs also follow the overall MBH–σ⋆ relationship. We also confirm the previous claims that CL-AGNs tend to be biased toward lower Eddington ratios, and that their extreme variabilities are more likely due to the intrinsic changes of the accretion rates. In addition, CL-AGNs with recent star formations tend to have higher Eddington ratios. Broad-line regions (BLRs) in high-redshift quasars provide crucial information on chemical enrichment in the early universe. Here we present a study of BLR metallicities in 33 quasars at redshift 5.7 < z < 6.4. Using the near-IR spectra of the quasars obtained from the Gemini telescope, we measure their rest-frame UV emission-line flux and calculate flux ratios. We then estimate BLR metallicities with empirical calibrations based on photoionization models. The inferred median metallicity of our sample is a few times the solar value, indicating that the BLR gas had been highly metal enriched at z ∼ 6. We compare our sample with a low-redshift quasar sample with similar luminosities and find no evidence of redshift evolution in quasar BLR metallicities. This is consistent with previous studies. The Fe ii /Mg ii flux ratio, a proxy for the Fe/ α element abundance ratio, shows no redshift evolution as well, further supporting rapid nuclear star formation at z ∼ 6. We also find that the black hole massâ€"BLR metallicity relation at z ∼ 6 is consistent with the relation measured at 2 < z < 5, suggesting that our results are not biased by a selection effect due to this relation. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the dust continuum and [C ii ] emission of the host galaxy of J0439+1634, a gravitationally lensed quasar at z = 6.5. Gravitational lensing boosts the source-plane resolution to ∼0.″15 (∼0.8 kpc). The lensing model derived from the ALMA data is consistent with the fiducial model in Fan et al. based on HST imaging. The host galaxy of J0439+1634 can be well-fitted by a Sérsic profile consistent with an exponential disk, both in the far-infrared (FIR) continuum and the [C ii ] emission. The overall magnification is 4.53 ± 0.05 for the continuum and 3.44 ± 0.05 for the [C ii ] line. The host galaxy of J0439+1634 is a compact ultraluminous infrared galaxy, with a total star formation rate (SFR) of 1.56 × 103M⊙ yr−1 after correcting for lensing and an effective radius of 0.74 kpc. The resolved regions in J0439+1634 follow the "[C ii ] deficit," where the [C ii ]-to-FIR ratio decreases with FIR surface brightness. The reconstructed velocity field of J0439+1634 appears to be rotation-like. The maximum line-of-sight rotation velocity is 130 km s−1 at a radius of 2 kpc. However, our data cannot be fit by an axisymmetric thin rotating disk, and the inclination of the rotation axis, i, remains unconstrained. We estimate the dynamical mass of the host galaxy to be. J0439+1634 is likely to have a high gas-mass fraction and an oversized SMBH compared to local relations. The SFR of J0439+1634 reaches the maximum possible values, and the SFR surface density is close to the highest value seen in any star-forming galaxy currently known in the universe. We report the detection of the host galaxy of a damped Lyα system (DLA) with log N(H i) [cm−2] = 21.0 ± 0.10 at z ≈ 3.0091 toward the background quasar SDSS J011852+040644 using the Palomar Cosmic Web Imager at the Hale (P200) telescope. We detect Lyα emission in the dark core of the DLA trough at a 3.3σ confidence level, with Lyα luminosity of LLyα = (3.8 ± 0.8) × 1042 erg s−1, corresponding to a star formation rate of ≳2 M⊙ yr−1 (considering a lower limit on Lyα escape fraction) as typical for Lyman break galaxies at these redshifts. The Lyα emission is blueshifted with respect to the systemic redshift derived from metal absorption lines by 281 ± 43 km s−1. The associated galaxy is at very small impact parameter of ≲12 kpc from the background quasar, which is in line with the observed anticorrelation between column density and impact parameter in spectroscopic searches tracing the large-scale environments of DLA host galaxies. X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift z = 7.5, although only limited to a few objects at z > 6.5. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five z > 6.5 quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional z > 6.5 quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities (Lbol), Eddington ratios (λEdd), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities (LIR) of these quasars using infrared and submillimeter observations. Correlation analysis indicates that the X-ray bolometric correction (the factor that converts from X-ray luminosity to bolometric luminosity) decreases with increasing Lbol, and that the UV/optical-to-X-ray ratio, αox, strongly correlates with L2500 Å, and moderately correlates with λEdd and blueshift of C iv emission lines. These correlations are consistent with those found in lower-z quasars, indicating quasar accretion physics does not evolve with redshift. We also find that LIR does not correlate with L2–10 keV in these luminous distant quasars, suggesting that the ratio of the SMBH growth rate and their host galaxy growth rate in these early luminous quasars are different from those of local galaxies. A joint spectral analysis of the X-ray detected z > 6.5 quasars yields an average X-ray photon index of , steeper than that of low-z quasars. By comparing it with the Γ − λEdd relation, we conclude that the steepening of Γ for quasars at z > 6.5 is mainly driven by their higher Eddington ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report Chandra detection of three UV-bright radio-quiet quasars at z ≳ 5. We have collected a sufficient number of photons to extract an X-ray spectrum of each quasar to measure their basic X-ray properties, such as the X-ray flux, power-law photon index (Γ), and optical-to-X-ray spectral slope (αOX). J074749+115352 at z = 5.26 is the X-ray brightest radio-quiet quasar at z > 5. It may have a short timescale variation (on a timescale of ∼3800 s in the observer's frame, or ∼600 s in the rest frame), which is, however, largely embedded in the statistical noise. We extract phase folded spectra of this quasar. There are two distinguishable states: a "high soft" state with an average X-ray flux ∼2.7 times the "low hard" state, and a significantly steeper X-ray spectral slope (versus). We also compare the three quasars detected in this paper to other quasar samples. We find that J074749+115352, with an SMBH mass of MSMBH ≈ 1.8 × 109M⊙ and an Eddington ratio of λEdd ≈ 2.3, is extraordinarily X-ray bright. It has an average αOX = −1.46 ± 0.02 and a 2–10 keV bolometric correction factor of Lbol/L2–10 keV = 42.4 ± 5.8, both significantly depart from some well defined scaling relations. We compare Γ of the three quasars to other samples at different redshifts, and do not find any significant redshift evolution based on the limited sample of z > 5 quasars with reliable measurements of the X-ray spectral properties. The spectral lags of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been viewed as the most promising probes of the possible violations of Lorentz invariance (LIV). However, these constraints usually depend on the assumption of the unknown intrinsic time lag in different energy bands and the use of a single highest-energy photon. A new approach to test the LIV effects has been proposed by directly fitting the spectral-lag behavior of a GRB with a well-defined transition from positive lags to negative lags. This method simultaneously provides a reasonable formulation of the intrinsic time lag and robust lower limits on the quantum-gravity energy scales (EQG). In this work, we perform a global fitting to the spectral-lag data of GRB 190114C by considering the possible LIV effects based on a Bayesian approach. We then derive limits on EQG and the coefficients of the standard model extension. The Bayes factor output in our analysis shows very strong evidence for the spectral-lag transition in GRB 190114C. Our constraints on a variety of isotropic and anisotropic coefficients for LIV are somewhat weaker than existing bounds, but they can be viewed as comparatively robust and have the promise to complement existing LIV constraints. The observations of GRBs with higher-energy emissions and higher temporal resolutions will contribute to a better formulation of the intrinsic time lag and more rigorous LIV constraints in the dispersive photon sector. We present a study of strong intervening absorption systems in the near-IR spectra of 31 luminous quasars at z > 5.7. The quasar spectra were obtained with Gemini GNIRS that provide continuous wavelength coverage from ∼0.9 to ∼2.5 μm. We detect 32 strong Mg ii doublet absorbers with rest-frame equivalent width Wr(λ2796) > 1.0 Å at 2.2 < z < 6.0. Each Mg ii absorber is confirmed by at least two associated Fe ii absorption lines in the rest-frame wavelength range of ∼1600–2600 Å. We find that the comoving line density (dN/dX) of the strong Fe ii -bearing Mg ii absorbers decreases toward higher redshift at z > 3, consistent with previous studies. Compared with strong Mg ii absorbers detected in damped Lyα systems at 2 < z < 4, our absorbers are potentially less saturated and show much larger rest-frame velocity widths. This suggests that the gas traced by our absorbers are potentially affected by galactic superwinds. We analyze the Hubble Space Telescope near-IR images of the quasars and identify possible associated galaxies for our strong absorbers. There are a maximum of two galaxy candidates found within 5″ radius of each absorber. The median F105W-band magnitude of these galaxy candidates is 24.8 mag, which is fainter than the L* galaxy luminosity at z ∼ 4. By using our observed dN/dX of strong Mg ii absorbers and galaxy candidates median luminosity, we suggest that at high redshift, strong Mg ii absorbers tend to have a more disturbed environment but smaller halo size than that at z < 1. We report new measurements of the intergalactic medium (IGM) Lyα and Lyβ effective optical depth at 5.3 < z < 6.5, using a new sample of quasar sight lines including 32 quasars at 6.308 ≤ z ≤ 7.00. These quasars provide a large statistical sample to measure the IGM evolution during the transition phase of the reionization epoch. We construct a data set of deep optical spectra of these quasars using VLT, Keck, Gemini, LBT, and MMT. We measure the Lyα effective optical depth at 5.36 < z < 6.57 using the Lyα forests of both individual spectra and the stacked spectrum. The large scatter of individual measurements is consistent with previous work, suggesting an inhomogeneous reionization process. Combining our new measurements and previous results, we obtain a best fit for the Lyα effective optical depth evolution at z > 5.3,. We then estimate the observed Lyβ effective optical depth using Lyβ forests and convert them to Lyα optical depth for comparison, which provides additional constraints on the evolution of the IGM optical depth. The Lyβ-based measurements are generally in agreement with the best-fit evolution obtained from Lyα forests. Using this new sample, we identify 389 Lyα and 50 Lyβ transmission spikes at 5.5 < z < 6.3. The upper limits of Lyα optical depth estimated using transmission spikes are well consistent with our best-fit evolution. The evolution in number density of these high-redshift transmission spikes suggests a rapid transition phase at the end of the reionization. Comparison of our optical depth measurements with hydrodynamical simulations indicates an IGM neutral hydrogen fraction at z = 6. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a spectroscopic survey of Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z ≈ 5.7 using the multiobject spectrograph M2FS on the Magellan Clay telescope. This is part of a high-redshift galaxy survey carried out in several well-studied deep fields. These fields have deep images in multiple UV/optical bands, including a narrow NB816 band that has allowed an efficient selection of LAE candidates at z ≈ 5.7. Our sample consists of 260 LAEs and covers a total effective area of more than 2 deg2 on the sky. This is so far the largest (spectroscopically confirmed) sample of LAEs at this redshift. We use the secure redshifts and narrowband photometry to measure Lyα luminosities. We find that these LAEs span a Lyα luminosity range of erg s−1 and include some of the most luminous galaxies known at in terms of Lyα luminosity. Most of them have rest-frame equivalent widths between 20 and 300 Å, and more luminous Lyα emission lines tend to have broader line widths. We detect a clear offset of ∼20 Å between the observed Lyα wavelength distribution and the NB816 filter transmission curve, which can be explained by the intergalactic medium absorption of continua blueward of Lyα in the high-redshift spectra. We present a submillimeter continuum survey ("SCUBA2 High rEdshift bRight quasaR surveY," hereafter SHERRY) of 54 high-redshift quasars at 5.6 < z < 6.9 with quasar bolometric luminosities in the range of (0.2–5) × 1014L⊙, using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array-2 (SCUBA2) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. About 30% (16/54) of the sources are detected with a typical 850 μm rms sensitivity of 1.2 mJy beam−1 (Sν,850 μm = 4–5 mJy, at >3.5σ). The new SHERRY detections indicate far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of 3.5 × 1012 to 1.4 × 1013L⊙, implying extreme star formation rates of 90–1060 M⊙ yr−1 in the quasar host galaxies. Compared with z = 2–5 samples, the FIR-luminous quasars (LFIR > 1013L⊙) are rarer at z ∼ 6. The optical/near-infrared spectra of these objects show that 11% (6/54) of the sources have weak Lyα emission-line features, which may relate to different subphases of the central active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our SCUBA2 survey confirms the trend reported in the literature that quasars with submillimeter detections tend to have weaker ultraviolet (UV) emission lines compared to quasars with nondetections. The connection between weak UV quasar line emission and bright dust continuum emission powered by massive star formation may suggest an early phase of AGN–galaxy evolution, in which the broad-line region is starting to develop slowly or is shielded from the central ionization source, and has unusual properties such as weak-line features or bright FIR emission. Using a high-luminosity (Lbol ∼ 1047.5–1048.3 erg s−1), high-redshift (3.2 < z < 3.8) quasar sample of 19 quasars with optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the reliability of the C iv -based black hole mass estimates (MBH). The median logarithm of the C iv - and Hβ-based MBH ratios is 0.110 dex, with a scatter of 0.647 dex. The C iv -to-Hβ BH mass differences are significantly correlated with the C iv FWHMs, blueshifts, and asymmetries. Corrections of the C iv FWHM using the blueshift and asymmetry reduce the scatter of the mass differences by ∼0.04–0.2 dex. Quasars in our sample accrete at the Eddington ratio REDD > 0.3 and cover a considerable range of blueshifts, with 18/19 of the quasars showing C iv blueshifts (with the median value of 1126 km s−1) and 14/19 of the quasars showing C iv blueshifts larger than 500 km s−1. It suggests that not all quasars with high Eddington ratios show large blueshifts. The Baldwin effect between the C iv rest-frame equivalent width (REW) and the continuum luminosity at 1350 Å is not seen, likely due to the limited luminosity range of our sample. We find a lack of flux in the red wing of the composite spectrum with larger C iv blueshift and detect a higher ratio of [O iii ] quasars with REW[O iii ] > 5 Å in the subsample with lower C iv blueshift. Luminous z ≥ 7 quasars provide direct probes of the evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of reionization (EoR). The Lyα damping wing absorption imprinted by neutral hydrogen in the IGM can be detected in a single EoR quasar spectrum, allowing the measurement of the IGM neutral fraction toward that line of sight. However, damping wing features have only been detected in two z > 7 quasars in previous studies. In this paper, we present new high-quality optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the z = 7.00 quasar DES J025216.64–050331.8 obtained with Keck/Near-Infrared Echellette Spectrometer and Gemini/GMOS. By using the Mg ii single-epoch virial method, we find that it hosts a SMBH accreting at an Eddington ratio of λEdd = 0.7 ± 0.1, consistent with the values seen in other luminous z ∼ 7 quasars. Furthermore, the Lyα region of the spectrum exhibits a strong damping wing absorption feature. The lack of associated metal absorption in the quasar spectrum indicates that this absorption is imprinted by a neutral IGM. Using a state-of-the-art model developed by Davies et al., we measure a volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction at z = 7 of within 68% (95%) confidence intervals when marginalizing over quasar lifetimes of. The reverse shock (RS) model is generally introduced to interpret the optical afterglows with the rapid rising and decaying, such as the early optical afterglow of GRB 990123 (which is also called the optical flash). In this paper, we collected 11 gamma-ray burst (GRB) early optical afterglows, which have signatures of dominant RS emission. Since the temporal slopes of the optical flashes are determined by both the medium density distribution index k and the electron spectral index p, we apply the RS model of the thin shell case to the optical flashes and determine the ambient medium of the progenitors. We find that the k value is in the range of 0–1.5. The k value in this paper is consistent with the result in Yi et al., where the forward shock model was applied to some onset bumps. However, the method adopted in this paper is only applicable to GRB afterglows with significant sharp rising and decaying RS emission. Our results indicate that the RS model can also be applied to confirm the circumburst medium, further implying that GRBs may have diverse circumburst media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the Hβ and/or Mg ii broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs, on average, do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing subrelativistic BAL outflows, we see the prevalence of large C iv BEL blueshift (∼3100 km s−1) and weak [O iii ] emission (particularly the narrow [O iii ] λ5007 component), indicative of nuclear outflows affecting the narrow emission line (NEL) regions. In another subset consisting of 13 BAL QSOs having simultaneous observations of Mg ii and Hβ, we found a strong correlation between 3000 and 5000 Å monochromatic luminosity, consistent with that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and luminosity; however, there is no correlation between Mg ii and Hβ in FWHM, likely due to nuclear outflows influencing the BEL regions. Our spectroscopic investigations offer strong evidence that the presence of nuclear outflows plays an important role in shaping the BEL/NEL regions of these quasars and, possibly, regulating the growth of central supermassive BHs. A long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) has been widely thought to arise from the collapse of a massive star, and it has been suggested that its ambient medium is a homogenous interstellar medium (ISM) or a stellar wind. There are two shocks when an ultra-relativistic fireball that has been ejected during the prompt gamma-ray emission phase sweeps up the circumburst medium: a reverse shock that propagates into the fireball, and a forward shock that propagates into the ambient medium. In this paper, we investigate the temporal evolution of the dynamics and emission of these two shocks in an environment with a general density distribution of n∝R–k (where R is the radius) by considering thick-shell and thin-shell cases. A GRB afterglow with one smooth onset peak at early times is understood to result from such external shocks. Thus, we can determine the medium density distribution by fitting the onset peak appearing in the light curve of an early optical afterglow. We apply our model to 19 GRBs and find that their k values are in the range of 0.4-1.4, with a typical value of k ∼ 1, implying that this environment is neither a homogenous ISM with k = 0 nor a typical stellar wind with k = 2. We continue our systematic statistical study of various components of gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical light curves. We decompose the early onset bump and the late re-brightening bump with empirical fits and analyze their statistical properties. Among the 146 GRBs that have well-sampled optical light curves, the onset and re-brightening bumps are observed in 38 and 26 GRBs, respectively. It is found that the typical rising and decaying slopes for both the onset and re-brightening bumps are ~1.5 and ~-1.15, respectively. No early onset bumps in the X-ray band are detected to be associated with the optical onset bumps, while an X-ray re-brightening bump is detected for half of the re-brightening optical bumps. The peak luminosity is anti-correlated with the peak time Lp α t -1.81±0.32 p for the onset bumps and Lp ℵ t -0.83±0.17 p for the re-brightening bumps. Both Lp and the isotropic energy release of the onset bumps are correlated with Eγ,iso, whereas no similar correlation is found for the re-brightening bumps. These results suggest that the afterglow onset bumps are likely due to the deceleration of the GRB fireballs. Taking the onset bumps as probes for the properties of the fireballs and their ambient medium, we find that the typical power-law index of the relativistic electrons is 2.5 and the medium density profile behaves as n ℵ r -1 within the framework of the synchrotron external shock models. With the medium density profile obtained from our analysis, we also confirm the correlation between the initial Lorentz factor (Γ0) and Eiso,γ in our previous work. The jet component that produces the re-brightening bump seems to be on-axis and independent of the prompt emission jet component. Its typical kinetic energy budget would be about one order of magnitude larger than the prompt emission component, but with a lower Γ0, typically several tens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
