Recently, some fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been reported to exhibit complex and diverse variations in Faraday rotation measurements (RM) and polarization, suggesting that dynamically evolving magnetization environments may surround them. In this paper, we investigate the Faraday conversion (FC) effect in a binary system involving an FRB source and analyze the polarization evolution of FRBs. For a strongly magnetized high-mass companion binary, when an FRB with ∼100% linear polarization passes through the radial magnetic field of the companion star, the circular polarization (CP) component will be induced and oscillate symmetrically around the point with the degree of CP equal to zero, the rate and amplitude of the oscillation decrease as the frequency increases. The very strong plasma column density in the HMCBs can cause CP to oscillate with frequency at a very drastic rate, which may lead to depolarization. Near the superior conjunction of the binary orbit, the DM varies significantly due to the dense plasma near the companion, and the significant FC also occurs in this region. As the pulsar moves away from the superior conjunction, the CP gradually tends toward zero and then returns to its value before incidence. We also investigate the effect of the rotation of the companion star. We find that a sufficiently significant RM reversal can be produced at large magnetic inclinations and the RM variation is very diverse. The recent discovery of a Galactic fast radio burst (FRB) occurring simultaneously with an X-ray burst (XRB) from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 implies that at least some FRBs arise from magnetar activities. We propose that FRBs are triggered by crust fracturing of magnetars, with the burst event rate depending on the magnetic field strength in the crust. Since the crust-fracturing rate is relatively higher in polar regions, FRBs are more likely to be triggered near the directions of multipolar magnetic poles. Crust fracturing produces Alfvén waves, forming a charge-starved region in the magnetosphere and leading to nonstationary pair plasma discharges. An FRB is produced by coherent plasma radiation due to nonuniform pair production across magnetic field lines. Meanwhile, the FRB-associated XRB is produced by the rapid relaxation of the external magnetic field lines. In this picture, the sharp-peak hard X-ray component in association with FRB 200428 is from a region between adjacent trapped fireballs, and its spectrum with a high cutoff energy is attributed to resonant Compton scattering. The persistent X-ray emission is from a hot spot heated by the magnetospheric activities, and its temperature evolution is dominated by magnetar surface cooling. In this paper, we explore the viewing angle effect on black hole–neutron star (BH–NS) merger kilonova lightcurves. We extrapolate the fitting formulae for the mass and velocity of dynamical ejecta across a wide mass ratio range validated with 66 simulations and use them in kilonova lightcurve calculations. The calculated peak luminosity of a BH–NS merger kilonova is typically about a few times 1041 erg s−1, which is always ≲4.5 × 1041 erg s−1. This corresponds to AB absolute magnitudes fainter than ∼−15 mag in the optical and ∼−16 mag in the infrared. The dynamical ejecta usually contribute to the majority of the kilonova emission, as its projected photosphere area is much larger than that of the disk wind outflows. The fitted blackbody temperature and the observed multiband lightcurve shape are insensitive to the line of sight. The peak time of the observed multiband lightcurves, affected by the light-propagation effect, is related to the relative motion direction between the dynamical ejecta and the observer. The predicted peak luminosity, which changes with the projected photosphere area, only varies by a factor of ∼(2–3) (or by ∼1 mag) for different viewing angles. When taking the short-duration gamma-ray burst afterglow into account, for an on-axis geometry, the kilonova emission is usually outshone by the afterglow emission and can only be observed in the redder bands, especially in the K band at late times. Compared with GW 170817/AT 2017gfo, BH–NS merger kilonovae are optically dim but possibly infrared bright, and have lower fitting temperature at the same epoch after the merger. The first repeating fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 121102, was found to be associated with a spatially coincident, persistent nonthermal radio source, but the origin of the persistent emission remains unknown. In this paper, we propose that the persistent emission is produced via a synchrotron-heating process by multiple bursts of FRB 121102 in a self-absorbed synchrotron nebula. With a population of bursts of the repeating FRB absorbed by the synchrotron nebula, the energy distribution of electrons in the nebula will change significantly. As a result, the spectrum of the nebula will show a hump steadily. For the persistent emission of FRB 121102, the total energy of bursts injecting into the nebula is required to be about 3.3 × 1049 erg, the burst injection age is over 6.7 × 104 yr, the nebula size is ∼0.02 pc, and the electron number is about 3.2 × 1055. We predict that as more bursts inject, the brightness of the nebula would be brighter than the current observation, and meanwhile, the peak frequency would become higher. Due to the synchrotron absorption of the nebula, some low-frequency bursts would be absorbed, which may explain why most bursts were detected above ∼1 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physical origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is still unknown. Multiwavelength and polarization observations of an FRB source would be helpful to diagnose its progenitor and environment. So far only the first repeating source FRB 121102 appears to be spatially coincident with a persistent radio emission. Its bursts also have very large values of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), i.e.,. We show that theoretically there should be a simple relation between RM and the luminosity of the persistent source of an FRB source if the observed RM mostly arises from the persistent emission region. FRB 121102 follows this relation given that the magnetic field in the persistent emission region is highly ordered and that the number of relativistic electrons powering the persistent emission is comparable to that of nonrelativistic electrons that contribute to RM. The nondetections of persistent emission sources from all other localized FRB sources are consistent with their relatively small RMs () according to this relation. Radio signals are delayed when propagating through plasma. This type of delay is frequency dependent and is usually used for estimating the projected number density of electrons along the line of sight, called the dispersion measure (DM). The dense and clumpy distribution of plasma can cause refractive deflections of radio signals, analogous to lensing effects. Similar to gravitational lensing, there are two contributions to the time delay effect in plasma lensing: a geometric delay, due to increased path length of the signal, and a dispersive delay due to the change of speed of light in a plasma medium. We show the delay time for two models of the plasma distribution, and point out that the estimated DM can be biased. Since the contribution of the geometric effect can be comparable to that of the dispersive delay, the bias in the measured DM can be dramatically large if plasma lensing effects are not taken into account when signals propagate through a high-density gradient clump of plasma. The "Breakthrough Starshot" program is planning to send transrelativistic probes to travel to nearby stellar systems within decades. Because the probe velocity is designed to be a good fraction of the light speed, Zhang & Li recently proposed that these transrelativistic probes can be used to study astronomical objects and to test special relativity. In this work, we propose some methods to test special relativity and constrain photon mass using the Doppler effect with the images and spectral features of astronomical objects as observed in the transrelativistic probes. We introduce more general theories to set up the framework of testing special relativity, including the parametric general Doppler effect and the Doppler effect with massive photons. We find that by comparing the spectra of a certain astronomical object, one can test Lorentz invariance and constrain photon mass. Additionally, using the imaging and spectrograph capabilities of transrelativistic probes, one can test time dilation and constrain photon mass. For a transrelativistic probe with velocity v ∼ 0.2c, aperture D ∼ 3.5 cm, and spectral resolution R ∼ 100 (or 1000), we find that the probe velocity uncertainty can be constrained to σv ∼ 0.01c (or 0.001c), and the time dilation factor uncertainty can be constrained to (or 0.001), where is the time dilation factor and γ is the Lorentz factor. Meanwhile, the photon mass limit is set to mγ ≲ 10−33 g, which is slightly lower than the energy of the optical photon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FRB 181228 was detected by the Molonglo Synthesis Radio Telescope (MOST) at a position and time coincident with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations, representing the first simultaneous multiwavelength data collection for a fast radio burst (FRB). The large imaged field of view of TESS allows a search over the uncertainty region produced by MOST. However, the TESS pixel scale of 21″ and the full-frame image (FFI) cadence of 30 minutes is not optimal for the detection of a fast optical burst (FOB) with a possible millisecond duration. We search the TESS FFIs and find no events with a limiting TESS magnitude of 16, assuming a 30 minute event duration, corresponding to an optical flux density upper limit of approximately 2000 Jy for a ∼1 ms signal duration, assuming no signal loss. In addition, the cosmic-ray mitigation method for TESS significantly reduces its sensitivity to short-timescale transients, which we quantify. We compare our results to the predictions of Yang et al. and find that the upper limit is a factor of 2000 higher than the predicted maximum optical flux density. However, we find that if FRB 181228 had occurred in the galaxy thought to host the nearest FRB detection to date (37 Mpc), an FOB may have been detectable by TESS. In the near future, when the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment and Australian SKA Pathfinder will detect hundreds to thousands of FRBs, TESS may be able to detect FOBs from those rare bright and nearby FRBs within this large population (if more sophisticated cosmic-ray excision can be implemented). We present detailed simulations of the kilonova and gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow and kilonova luminosity function from black hole–neutron star (BH–NS) mergers, and discuss the detectability of an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart in connection with gravitational wave (GW) detections, GW-triggered target-of-opportunity observations, and time-domain blind searches. The predicted absolute magnitude of BH–NS kilonovae at 0.5 days after the merger falls in the range [−10, −15.5]. The simulated luminosity function contains potential information on the viewing-angle distribution of the anisotropic kilonova emission. We simulate the GW detection rates, detectable distances, and signal duration for future networks of 2nd/2.5th/3rd generation GW detectors. BH–NSs tend to produce brighter kilonovae and afterglows if the BH has a higher aligned spin, and a less massive NS with a stiffer equation of state. The detectability of kilonovae is especially sensitive to the BH spin. If BHs typically have low spins, the BH–NS EM counterparts are hard to discover. For 2nd generation GW detector networks, a limiting magnitude of mlimit ∼ 23–24 mag is required to detect kilonovae even if high BH spin is assumed. Thus, a plausible explanation for the lack of BH–NS-associated kilonova detection during LIGO/Virgo O3 is that either there is no EM counterpart (plunging events) or the current follow-ups are too shallow. These observations still have the chance to detect the on-axis jet afterglow associated with a short GRB or an orphan afterglow. Follow-up observations can detect possible associated short GRB afterglows, from which kilonova signatures may be studied. For time-domain observations, a high-cadence search in redder filters is recommended to detect more BH–NS-associated kilonovae and afterglows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious radio transients with millisecond durations. Recently, ∼16 days of periodic activity and ∼159 days of possible periodicity were detected to arise from FRB 180916.J0158+65 and FRB 121102, respectively, and the spin period of a slow-rotation magnetar was further considered to be one of the possible explanations of the periodic activities of repeating FRBs. For isolated neutron stars, the spin evolution suggests that it has difficulty reaching several hours. In this work, we mainly focus on the possible maximum spin period of isolated NSs/magnetars dominated by an interaction between a star's magnetic field and the disk. We find that the disk wind plays an important role in spin evolution, whose influence varies the power-law index in the evolution equation of mass flow rate. For a magnetar without disk wind, the longest spin period is tens of hours. When the disk wind with a classical parameter is involved, the maximum spin period can reach hundreds of hours. But for an extremely large index of mass flow rate due to disk wind or other angular momentum extraction processes, a spin period of ∼(16–160) days is still possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is still unknown. Multiwavelength observations during or shortly after the FRB phase would be essential to identify the counterpart of an FRB and to constrain its progenitor and environment. In this work, we investigate the brightness of the “fast optical bursts” (FOBs) associated with FRBs and the prospects of detecting them. We investigate several inverse Compton (IC) scattering processes that might produce an FOB, including both the one-zone and two-zone models. We also investigate the extension of the same mechanism of FRB emission to the optical band. We find that a detectable FOB with the current and forthcoming telescopes is possible under the IC scenarios with very special conditions. In particular, the FRB environment would need to invoke a neutron star with an extremely strong magnetic field and an extremely fast spin, or an extremely young supernova remnant surrounding the FRB source. Furthermore, most electrons in the source are also required to have a fine-tuned energy distribution such that most of the IC energy is channeled in the optical band. We conclude that the prospect of detecting FOBs associated with FRBs is low. On the other hand, if FOBs are detected from a small fraction of FRBs, these FOBs would reveal extreme physical conditions in the FRB environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extremely high brightness temperatures of pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs) require their radiation mechanisms to be coherent. Coherent curvature radiation from bunches has been long discussed as the mechanism for radio pulsars and recently for FRBs. Assuming that bunches are already generated in pulsar magnetospheres, we calculate the spectrum of coherent curvature radiation under a three-dimensional magnetic field geometry. Different from previous works assuming parallel trajectories and a monoenergetic energy distribution of electrons, we consider a bunch characterized by its length, curvature radius of the trajectory family, bunch opening angle, and electron energy distribution. We find that the curvature radiation spectra of the bunches are characterized by a multisegment broken power law, with the break frequencies depending on bunch properties and trajectory configuration. We also emphasize that in a pulsar magnetosphere, only the fluctuation of net charges with respect to the background (Goldreich–Julian) outflow can make a contribution to coherent radiation. We apply this model to constrain the observed spectra of pulsars and FRBs. For a typical pulsar (, P = 0.1 s), a small fluctuation of the net charge δnGJ ∼ 0.1nGJ can provide the observable flux. For FRBs, the fluctuating net charge may be larger due to its abrupt nature. For δnGJ ∼ nGJ, a neutron star with a strong magnetic field and fast rotation is required to power an FRB in the spindown-powered model. The requirement is less stringent in the cosmic comb model thanks to the larger cross section and compressed charge density of the bunch made by the external astrophysical stream that combs the magnetosphere. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a new kind of extragalactic radio transients. Some of them show repeating behaviors. Recent observations indicate that a few repeating FRBs (e.g., FRB 121102) present time–frequency downward drifting patterns and nearly 100% linear polarization. Following the model of Dai et al. who proposed that repeating FRBs may originate from a slowly rotating, old-aged pulsar colliding with an asteroid belt around a stellar-mass object, we focus on the prediction of time–frequency drifting and polarization. In this scenario, the frequency drifting is mainly caused by the geometric structure of a pulsar magnetosphere, and the drifting rate–frequency index is found to be 25/17. On the other hand, by considering the typical differential mass distribution of incident asteroids, we find that an asteroid with mass m ≳ 1017 g colliding with the pulsar would contribute abundant gravitational energy, which powers an FRB. A broad frequency band of the FRBs would be expected, due to the mass difference of the incident asteroids. In addition, we simulate the linear polarization distribution for the repeating FRBs, and constrain the linear polarization with ≳30% for the FRBs with flux of an order of magnitude lower than the maximum flux. The prompt emission spectrum of gamma-ray bursts is characterized by a smoothly joint broken power-law spectrum known as the Band function. The typical low-energy photon index is , which poses a challenge to standard synchrotron radiation models. We investigate the electron energy spectrum as a result of the interplay among adiabatic stochastic acceleration (ASA), particle injection, and synchrotron cooling. In the ASA-dominated low-energy range, ASA enables an efficient hardening of the injected energy spectrum to approach a spectral index −1. In the synchrotron cooling-dominated high-energy range, the injected high-energy electrons undergo fast synchrotron cooling and have a softer photon spectrum. With the energy range of the injected electrons broadly covering both the ASA- and synchrotron cooling-dominated ranges, the resulting photon number spectrum has low- and high-energy indices of and , respectively. The repeating fast radio burst (FRB) 121102 was recently localized in a dwarf galaxy at a cosmological distance. The dispersion measure (DM) derived for each burst from FRB 121102 so far has not shown significant evolution, even though an apparent increase was recently seen with newly detected VLA bursts. It is expected that more repeating FRB sources may be detected in the future. In this work, we investigate a list of possible astrophysical processes that might cause DM variation of a particular FRB source. The processes include (1) cosmological scale effects such as Hubble expansion and large-scale structure fluctuations; (2) FRB local effects such as gas density fluctuation, expansion of a supernova remnant (SNR), a pulsar wind nebula, and an H ii region; and (3) the propagation effect due to plasma lensing. We find that the DM variations contributed by the large-scale structure are extremely small, and any observable DM variation is likely caused by the plasma local to the FRB source. In addition to mechanisms that decrease DM over time, we suggest that an FRB source in an expanding SNR around a nearly neutral ambient medium during the deceleration (Sedov–Taylor and snowplow) phases or in a growing H ii region can increase DM. Some effects (e.g., an FRB source moving in an H ii region or plasma lensing) can produce either positive or negative DM variations. Future observations of DM variations of FRB 121102 and other repeating FRB sources can provide important clues regarding the physical origin of these sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulsars are magnetized rotating compact objects. They spin down due to magnetic dipole radiation and wind emission. If a photon has nonzero mass, the spin-down rate will be lower than in the zero-mass case. We show that an upper limit of the photon mass, i.e., , may be placed if a pulsar with period P is observed to spin down. Recently, a white dwarf (WD)–M dwarf binary, AR Scorpii, was discovered to emit pulsed broadband emission. The spin-down luminosity of the WD can comfortably power non-thermal radiation from the system. Applying our results to the WD pulsar with P = 117 s, we obtain a stringent upper limit of the photon mass between , assuming a vacuum dipole spindown, and , assuming spindown due to a fully developed pulsar wind. The Breakthrough Starshot project aims to send centimeter-sized, gram-scale "StarChip" probes to Alpha Centauri at a speed of ∼0.2 c. On the other hand, Zhang & Li recently proposed that transrelativistic cameras may be sent to any direction to study astronomical objects and test special relativity. To conduct such "relativistic astronomy," one needs to solve the motion of the probe in flight. We solve the motion of the probe (including the moving direction and the velocity) by comparing the positions of three or more point sources observed in the Earth rest frame and in the probe's comoving frame. When the positions of enough point sources are taken into account, the motion of the probe can be solved with an error that is even smaller than the diffraction limit of the transrelativistic camera. After solving the motion, when the measurement of the position of an additional point source is introduced, one can use the data to test the light aberration effect in special relativity. The upper limit of the photon mass can be placed from the deviation of aberration to slightly lower than the energy of the photon, e.g., ∼1 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three giant flares have been detected so far from soft gamma-ray repeaters, each characterized by an initial short hard spike and a pulsating tail. The observed pulsating tails are characterized by a duration of ∼100 s, an isotropic energy of ∼1044 erg, and a pulse period of a few seconds. The pulsating tail emission likely originates from the residual energy after the intense energy release during the initial spike, which forms a trapped fireball composed of a photon-pair plasma in a closed-field-line region of the magnetars. Observationally the spectra of pulsating tails can be fitted by the superposition of a thermal component and a power-law component, with the thermal component dominating the emission in the early and late stages of the pulsating-tail observations. In this paper, assuming that the trapped fireball is from a closed-field-line region in the magnetosphere, we calculate the atmospheric structure of the optically thick trapped fireball and the polarization properties of the trapped fireball. By properly treating the photon propagation in a hot, highly magnetized, electron–positron pair plasma, we tally photons in two modes (O mode and E mode) at a certain observational angle through Monte Carlo simulations. Our results suggest that the polarization degree depends on the viewing angle with respect to the magnetic axis of the magnetar, and can be as high as Π ≃ 30% in the 1–30 keV band, and Π ≃ 10% in the 30–100 keV band, if the line of sight is perpendicular to the magnetic axis. Young neutron stars (NSs) born in core-collapse explosions are promising candidates for the central engines of fast radio bursts (FRBs), since the first localized repeating burst FRB 121102 occurs in a star-forming dwarf galaxy similar to the host galaxies of superluminous supernovae and long gamma-ray bursts. However, FRB 180924 and FRB 190523 are localized to massive galaxies with low rates of star formation, compared with the host of FRB 121102. The offsets between the bursts and host centers are about 4 and 29 kpc for FRB 180924 and FRB 190523, respectively. These host properties are similar to those of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are produced by binary neutron star (BNS) or NS–black hole mergers. Therefore, the NSs powering FRBs may be formed in BNS mergers. In this paper, we study BNS merger rates and merger times, and predict the most likely merger locations for different types of host galaxies using the population synthesis method. We find that the BNS merger channel is consistent with the recently reported offsets of FRB 180924 and FRB 190523. The offset distribution of short GRBs is well reproduced by population synthesis using a galaxy model similar to that of GRB hosts. The event rate of FRBs (including non-repeating and repeating), is larger than those of BNS mergers and short GRBs, and requires a large fraction of observed FRBs emitting several bursts. Using curvature radiation by bunches in NS magnetospheres, we also predict the observational properties of FRBs from BNS mergers, including the dispersion measure and rotation measure. At late times (t ≥ 1 yr), the contribution to dispersion measure and rotation measure from BNS merger ejecta can be neglected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The excessive dispersion measure (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been proposed to be a powerful tool to study intergalactic medium (IGM) and to perform cosmography. One issue is that the fraction of baryons in the IGM, fIGM, is not properly constrained. Here, we propose a method of estimating fIGM using a putative sample of FRBs with the measurements of both DM and luminosity distance dL. The latter can be obtained if the FRB is associated with a distance indicator (e.g., a gamma-ray burst or a gravitational-wave event), or the redshift z of the FRB is measured and dL at the corresponding z is available from other distance indicators (e.g., SNe Ia) at the same redshift. As dL/DM essentially does not depend on cosmological parameters, our method can determine fIGM independent of cosmological parameters. We parameterize fIGM as a function of redshift and model the DM contribution from a host galaxy as a function of star formation rate. Assuming fIGM has a mild evolution with redshift with a functional form and by means of Monte Carlo simulations, we show that an unbiased and cosmology-independent estimate of the present value of fIGM with a ∼12% uncertainty can be obtained with 50 joint measurements of dL and DM.
