We analyze the cool gas in and around 14 nearby galaxies (at z < 0.1) mapped with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV MaNGA survey by measuring absorption lines produced by gas in spectra of background quasars/active galactic nuclei at impact parameters of 0–25 effective radii from the galactic centers. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we detect absorption at the galactic redshift and measure or constrain column densities of neutral (H i, N i, O i, and Ar i), low-ionization (Si ii, S ii, C ii, N ii, and Fe ii), and high-ionization (Si iii, Fe iii, N v, and O vi) species for 11 galaxies. We derive the ionization parameter and ionization-corrected metallicity using cloudy photoionization models. The H i column density ranges from ∼1013 to ∼1020 cm−2 and decreases with impact parameter for r ≳ R e . Galaxies with higher stellar mass have weaker H i absorption. Comparing absorption velocities with MaNGA radial velocity maps of ionized gas line emissions in galactic disks, we find that the neutral gas seen in absorption corotates with the disk out to ∼10 R e . Sight lines with lower elevation angles show lower metallicities, consistent with the metallicity gradient in the disk derived from MaNGA maps. Higher-elevation angle sight lines show higher ionization, lower H i column density, supersolar metallicity, and velocities consistent with the direction of galactic outflow. Our data offer the first detailed comparisons of circumgalactic medium (CGM) properties (kinematics and metallicity) with extrapolations of detailed galaxy maps from integral field spectroscopy; similar studies for larger samples are needed to more fully understand how galaxies interact with their CGM. We present the first results from our "CGM at Cosmic Noon with KCWI" program to study gas flows in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at z = 2–3. Combining the power of a high-resolution VLT/UVES quasar spectrum, a Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys image, and integral field spectroscopy with Keck/KCWI (Keck Cosmic Web Imager), we detected Lyα emission from a 1.7L* galaxy at zgal = 2.0711 associated with a Lyman limit system with weak Mg ii (Wr(2796) = 0.24 Å) in quasar field J143040+014939. The galaxy is star-forming (SFRFUV = 37.8 M⊙ yr−1) and clumpy: either an edge-on disk (i = 85°) or, less likely, a major merger. The background quasar probes the galaxy at an impact parameter of D = 66 kpc along the projected galaxy minor axis (Φ = 89°). From photoionization modeling of the absorption system, we infer a total line-of-sight CGM metallicity of. The absorption system is roughly kinematically symmetric about zgal, with a full Mg ii velocity spread of ∼210 km s−1. Given the galaxy–quasar orientation, CGM metallicity, and gas kinematics, we interpret this gas as an outflow that has likely swept up additional material. By modeling the absorption as a polar outflow cone, we find the gas is decelerating with average radial velocity Vout = 109–588 km s−1 for half-opening angles of θ0 = 14°–75°. Assuming a constant Vout, it would take on average tout ∼ 111–597 Myr for the gas to reach 66 kpc. The outflow is energetic, with a mass outflow rate of M⊙ yr−1 and mass loading factor of η < 1.4 ± 1.0. We aim to build a sample of ∼50 Mg ii absorber–galaxy pairs at this epoch to better understand gas flows when they are most actively building galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the pilot study of the Fluorescent Lyman-Alpha Structures in High-z Environments Survey; the largest integral field spectroscopy survey to date of the circumgalactic medium at z = 2.3–3.1. We observed 48 quasar fields with the Palomar Cosmic Web Imager to an average (2σ) limiting surface brightness of 6 × 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2 (in a 1″ aperture and ∼20 Å bandwidth). Extended H i Lyα emission is discovered around 37/48 of the observed quasars, ranging in projected radius from 14 to 55 proper kiloparsecs (pkpc), with one nebula exceeding 100 pkpc in effective diameter. The dimming-adjusted circularly averaged surface brightness profile peaks at 1 × 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2 at R⊥ ∼ 20 pkpc and integrated luminosities range from 0.4 to 9.4 × 1043 erg s−1. The emission appears to have an eccentric morphology and an average covering factor of ∼30%–40% at small radii. On average, the nebular spectra are redshifted with respect to both the systemic redshift and Lyα peak of the quasar spectrum. The integrated spectra of the nebulae mostly have single- or double-peaked profiles with global dispersions ranging from 143 to 708 km s−1, though the individual Gaussian components of lines with complex shapes mostly have dispersions ≤400 km s−1, and the flux-weighted velocity centroids of the lines vary by thousands of km s−1 with respect to the QSO redshifts. Finally, the root-mean-square velocities of the nebulae are found to be consistent with those expected from gravitational motions in dark matter halos of mass. The broad Mg ii line in quasars has distinct variability properties compared with broad Balmer lines: it is less variable and usually does not display a “breathing” mode, the increase in the average cloud distance when luminosity increases. We demonstrate that these variability properties of Mg ii can be reasonably well explained by simple locally optimally emitting cloud (LOC) photoionization models, confirming earlier photoionization results. In the fiducial LOC model, the Mg ii-emitting gas is on average more distant from the ionizing source than the Hα/Hβ gas and responds with a lower amplitude to continuum variations. If the broad-line region (BLR) is truncated at a physical radius of ∼0.3 pc (for a 108.5 M⊙ BH accreting at Eddington ratio of 0.1), most of the Mg ii flux will always be emitted near this outer boundary and hence will not display breathing. These results indicate that reverberation mapping results on broad Mg ii, while generally more difficult to obtain owing to the lower line responsivity, can still be used to infer the Mg ii BLR size and hence black hole mass. But it is possible that Mg ii does not have a well-defined intrinsic BLR size–luminosity relation for individual quasars, even though a global one for the general population may still exist. The dramatic changes in broad Hα/Hβ emission in the observationally rare changing-look quasars are fully consistent with photoionization responses to extreme continuum variability, and the LOC model provides natural explanations for the persistence of broad Mg ii in changing-look quasars defined on Hα/Hβ and the rare population of broad Mg ii emitters in the spectra of massive inactive galaxies. We present Keck/OSIRIS infrared IFU observations of the z = 3.153 sub-DLA DLA2233+131, previously detected in absorption to a background quasar and studied with single-slit spectroscopy and Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer integral field spectroscopy (IFU). We used the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics and OSIRIS IFU to reduce the point-spread function of the background quasar to FWHM ∼ 0.″15 and marginally resolve extended, foreground DLA emission. We detect emission with a flux erg s−1 cm−2, as well as unresolved and Hβλ4861 emission. Using a composite spectrum over the emission region, we measure dynamical mass M⊙. We made several estimates of star formation rate (SFR) using and Hβλ4861 emission, and measured a SFR of ∼7.1 − 13.6 M⊙ yr−1. We map and Hβλ4861 emission and the corresponding velocity fields to search for signs of kinematic structure. These maps allow for a more detailed kinematic analysis than previously possible for this galaxy. While some regions show slightly red and blueshifted emission indicative of potential edge-on disk rotation, the data are insufficient to support this interpretation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The various ionization mechanisms at play in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars have been well studied, but relatively little has been done to separately investigate the contributions of these ionization mechanisms within the host galaxy and outflowing components. Using Gemini integral field spectroscopy data, we study the ionization properties of these two components in four nearby (z ≲ 0.2) radio-quiet Type 1 quasars. Emission-line ratios and widths are employed to identify the dominant ionization mechanisms for the host and outflow components in each object. We find that photoionization by the AGN often dominates the ionization of both gaseous components in these systems. In three cases, the outflowing gas is more highly ionized than the gas in the host, indicating that it is more strongly exposed to the ionizing radiation field of the AGN. In two objects, a positive correlation between the line widths and line ratios in the outflowing gas component indicates that shocks with velocities of order 100–500 km s−1 may also be contributing to the ionization and heating of the outflowing gas component. The line ratios in the outflowing gas of one of these two objects also suggest a significant contribution from photoionization by hot, young stars in the portion of the outflow that is closest to star-forming regions in the host galaxy component. We present the results of integral field spectroscopy of the gravitational wave (GW) recoiling black hole candidate 3C 186. The goal of the observation is to study the kinematics of the [O iii]5007 narrow emission-line region (NLR) of the quasar, and investigate the origin of the velocity offsets originally measured for different UV lines. The results show that (i) the spatial structure of the NLR is complex. The [O iii]5007 line shows significant velocity offsets with respect to the systemic redshift of the source. Different components at different velocities (−670, −100, +75 km s−1) are produced in different regions of the source. (ii) We detect both the narrow and the broad components of the Hβ line. The narrow component generally follows the kinematics of the [O iii] line, while the broad component is significantly blueshifted. The peak of the broad line is near the blue end, or possibly outside of the sensitivity band of the instrument, implying a velocity offset of ≳1800 km s−1. This result is in agreement with the interpretation of the quasar as a GW recoiling black hole. The properties of the NLR show that the observed outflows are most likely the effect of radiation pressure on the (photoionized) gas in the interstellar medium of the host galaxy. The prevalence and properties of kiloparsec-scale outflows in nearby Type 1 quasars have been the subject of little previous attention. This work presents Gemini integral field spectroscopy of 10 Type 1 radio-quiet quasars at . The excellent image quality, coupled with a new technique to remove the point-spread function using spectral information, allows the fitting of the underlying host on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis. Fits to stars, line-emitting gas, and interstellar absorption show that 100% of the sample hosts warm ionized and/or cool neutral outflows with spatially averaged velocities () of 200–1300 and peak velocities (maximum ) of 500–2600 . These minor-axis outflows are powered primarily by the central active galactic nucleus, reach scales of 3–12 kpc, and often fill the field of view. Including molecular data and Type 2 quasar measurements, nearby quasars show a wide range in mass outflow rates ( to ) and momentum boosts ]. After extending the mass scale to Seyferts, dM/dt and dE/dt correlate with black hole mass ( and ). We present new integral field spectroscopy of the gravitationally lensed broad absorption line (BAL) quasar H1413+117, covering the ultraviolet restframe spectral range. We observe strong microlensing signatures in lensed image D, and we use this microlensing to simultaneously constrain both the broad emission and broad absorption line gas. The wavelength independence of image D magnifications across the broad emission lines (BELs) indicates a lower limit on the broad emission line region (BELR) size equal to the Einstein radius (ER) of the system: ≳11 lt-day for a lens redshift of 1.4 and ≳15 lt-day for zL = 0.94. Lensing simulations verify that the observed wavelength independence is very unlikely for BELRs with significant velocity stratification at size scales below an ER. We perform spectral decomposition to derive the intrinsic BEL and continuum spectrum, subject to BAL absorption. We reconstruct the intrinsic BAL absorption profile, whose features allow us to constrain outflow kinematics in the context of a disk-wind model. We find a very sharp, blueshifted onset of absorption of 1500 km s−1 in both C iv and N v, which may correspond to an inner edge of a disk-wind’s radial outflow. The lower ionization Si iv and Al iii have higher-velocity absorption onsets, consistent with a decreasing ionization parameter with radius in an accelerating outflow. There is evidence of strong absorption in the BEL component, which indicates a high covering factor for absorption over two orders of magnitude in outflow radius. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
