We report on optical observations and modeling of HD96670, a single-line spectroscopic binary in the Carina OB2 association. We collected 10 epochs of optical spectroscopy, and optical photometry on 17 nonconsecutive nights on the source. We construct a radial velocity curve from the spectra, and update the orbital period of the binary to be P = 5.28388 ± 0.00046 days. The spectra show oxygen and helium absorption, consistent with an O-type primary. We see no evidence for spectral lines from the secondary star in the binary. We model the optical light curve and radial velocity curve simultaneously using the Wilson–Devinney code and find a best-fit mass of for the primary, and for the secondary. An object of this mass is consistent with either a B-type star, or a black hole. Given that we see no absorption lines from the secondary, in combination with an observed hard power-law X-ray spectrum with Γ = 2.6 detected past 10 keV that may have been produced by wind accretion onto the secondary, we conclude that the secondary is most likely a black hole. We see asymmetrical helium lines with a shape consistent with the presence of a third star. If the secondary is indeed a black hole, this system would add to the small sample of only four possible black hole high mass X-ray binaries in the galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our 5 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the globular cluster NGC 6652 detected seven X-ray sources, three of which were previously unidentified. This cluster hosts a well-known bright low-mass X-ray binary, source A (or XB 1832-330). Source B shows unusual rapid flaring variability, with an average LX (0.5-10 keV) ~2 × 1034 erg s-1, but with minutes-long flares up to LX = 9 × 1034 erg s-1. Its spectrum can be fit by an absorbed power law of photon index Γ ~ 1.24 and hardens as the count rate decreases. This suggests that part or all of the variation might be due to obscuration by the rim of a highly inclined accretion disk. Sources C and D, with LX ~ 1033 erg s-1, have soft and unusual spectra. Source C requires a very soft component, with a spectrum peaking at 0.5 keV, which might be the hot polar cap of a magnetically accreting polar cataclysmic variable. Source D shows a soft spectrum (fit by a power law of photon index ~2.3) with marginal evidence for an emission line around 1 keV; its nature is unclear. The faint new sources E, F, and G have luminosities of 1-2 × 1032 erg s-1, if associated with the cluster (which is likely). E and F have relatively hard spectra (consistent with power laws with photon index ~1.5). G lacks soft photons, suggesting absorption with NH > 1022 cm-2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report NuSTAR and Chandra observations of two X-ray transients, SWIFT J174540.7−290015 (T15) and SWIFT J174540.2−290037 (T37), which were discovered by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in 2016 within r ∼ 1 pc of Sgr A*. NuSTAR detected bright X-ray outbursts from T15 and T37, likely in the soft and hard states, with 3–79 keV luminosities of 8 × 1036 and 3 × 1037 erg s−1, respectively. No X-ray outbursts have previously been detected from the two transients and our Chandra ACIS analysis puts an upper limit of LX ≲ 2 × 1031 erg s−1 on their quiescent 2–8 keV luminosities. No pulsations, significant quasi-periodic oscillations, or type I X-ray bursts were detected in the NuSTAR data. While T15 exhibited no significant red noise, the T37 power density spectra are well characterized by three Lorentzian components. The declining variability of T37 above ν ∼ 10 Hz is typical of black hole (BH) transients in the hard state. NuSTAR spectra of both transients exhibit a thermal disk blackbody, X-ray reflection with broadened Fe atomic features, and a continuum component well described by Comptonization models. Their X-ray reflection spectra are most consistent with high BH spin (a* ≳ 0.9) and large disk density (ne ∼ 1021 cm−3). Based on the best-fit ionization parameters and disk densities, we found that X-ray reflection occurred near the inner-disk radius, which was derived from the relativistic broadening and thermal disk component. These X-ray characteristics suggest the outbursting BH-low-mass X-ray binary scenario for both transients and yield the first BH spin measurements from X-ray transients in the central 100 pc region. We present the first survey results of hard X-ray point sources in the Galactic Center (GC) region by NuSTAR. We have discovered 70 hard (3–79 keV) X-ray point sources in a 0.6 deg region around Sgr A* with a total exposure of 1.7 Ms, and 7 sources in the Sgr B2 field with 300 ks. We identify clear Chandra counterparts for 58 NuSTAR sources and assign candidate counterparts for the remaining 19. The NuSTAR survey reaches X-ray luminosities of ∼4× and ∼8 × 10 erg s at the GC (8 kpc) in the 3–10 and 10–40 keV bands, respectively. The source list includes three persistent luminous X-ray binaries (XBs) and the likely run-away pulsar called the Cannonball. New source-detection significance maps reveal a cluster of hard (>10 keV) X-ray sources near the Sgr A diffuse complex with no clear soft X-ray counterparts. The severe extinction observed in the Chandra spectra indicates that all the NuSTAR sources are in the central bulge or are of extragalactic origin. Spectral analysis of relatively bright NuSTAR sources suggests that magnetic cataclysmic variables constitute a large fraction (>40%–60%). Both spectral analysis and logN–logS distributions of the NuSTAR sources indicate that the X-ray spectra of the NuSTAR sources should have kT > 20 keV on average for a single temperature thermal plasma model or an average photon index of Γ = 1.5–2 for a power-law model. These findings suggest that the GC X-ray source population may contain a larger fraction of XBs with high plasma temperatures than the field population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
