Search

RRd stars are a subclass of RR Lyrae stars that pulsate simultaneously in the fundamental and the first-overtone radial modes. We report the analysis of 10 RRd stars discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 region of the Galactic halo using SDSS and Zwicky Transient Facility data. By combining the two data sets, we constructed ∼23 yr long lightcurves in gri bands, and conclude that out of 10, 9 were the classical RRd stars and 1 was the anomalous RRd star. We also observed the long-term variation, the Blazhko effect, in 3 classical RRd stars out of 10 stars, giving an incidence rate of 30%. The shortest Blazhko period observed was 226.4 ± 0.8 days and the longest was 2799 ± 75 days.

Virgo III is a newly discovered ultra-faint-dwarf (UFD) candidate, and finding RR Lyrae associated with this galaxy is important to constrain its distance. In this work, we present a search of RR Lyrae in the vicinity of Virgo III based on the time-series r -band images taken from the Lulin One-meter Telescope (LOT). We have identified three RR Lyrae from our LOT data, including two fundamental mode (ab-type) and a first-overtone (c-type) RR Lyrae. Assuming these three RR Lyrae are members of Virgo III, we derived the distance to this UFD as 154 ± 25 kpc, fully consistent with the independent measurements given in the literature. We have also revisited the relation between absolute V -band magnitude ( M _V ) and the number of RR Lyrae (of all types, N _RRL ) found in local galaxies, demonstrating that the M _V - N _RRL relation is better described with the specific RR Lyrae frequency.

The Draco Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy is one of the nearest and the most dark-matter-dominated satellites of the Milky Way. We obtained multiepoch near-infrared (NIR, JHK _s ) observations of the central region of Draco dSph covering a sky area of ∼21′ × 21′ using the WIRCam instrument at the 3.6 m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Homogeneous JHK _s time-series photometry for 212 RR Lyrae (173 fundamental-mode, 24 first-overtone, and 15 mixed-mode variables) and five Anomalous Cepheids in Draco dSph are presented and used to derive their period–luminosity relations at NIR wavelengths for the first-time. The small scatter of ∼0.05 mag in these empirical relations for RR Lyrae stars is consistent with those in globular clusters and suggests a very small metallicity spread, up to ∼0.2 dex, among these centrally located variables. Based on empirically calibrated NIR period–luminosity–metallicity relations for RR Lyrae in globular clusters, we determined a distance modulus to Draco dSph of μ _RRL = 19.557 ± 0.026 mag. The calibrated K _s -band period–luminosity relations for Anomalous Cepheids in the Draco dSph and the Large Magellanic Cloud exhibit statistically consistent slopes but systematically different zero points, hinting at possible metallicity dependence of ∼ − 0.3 mag dex ^−1 . Finally, the apparent magnitudes of the tip of the red-giant branch in I and J bands also agree well with their absolute calibrations with the adopted RR Lyrae distance to Draco. Our recommended ∼1.5% precise RR Lyrae distance, D _Draco = 81.55 ± 0.98(statistical) ± 1.17(systematic) kpc, is the most accurate and precise distance to Draco dSph galaxy.

Multiband light curves of two RR Lyrae variables in Segue II and Ursa Major II ultrafaint dwarf galaxies were collected from near simultaneous observations using the Lulin One-meter Telescope in Vgri bands. Together with Gaia G -band light curves, we determined photometric metallicities using empirical relations involving pulsation period and Fourier parameter as dependent parameters. We demonstrated that the RR Lyrae photometric metallicity can be determined accurately when these empirical relations were employed at multiple wavelengths, which can potentially improve the distance determination based on RR Lyrae stars. The photometric metallicities based on our approach were found to be −2.27 ± 0.13 dex and −1.87 ± 0.16 dex for the RR Lyrae in Segue II and Ursa Major II UFD, respectively, with corresponding distance moduli of 17.69 ± 0.15 mag and 17.58 ± 0.15 mag, in agreement with previous literature determinations. This approach of photometric metallicity of RR Lyrae based on multiband optical light curves will be particularly relevant for distance measurements in the era of the Vera C Rubin’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

Milky Way Cepheid variables with accurate Hubble Space Telescope photometry have been established as standards for primary calibration of the cosmic distance ladder to achieve a percent-level determination of the Hubble constant ( H _0 ). These 75 Cepheid standards are the fundamental sample for investigation of possible residual systematics in the local H _0 determination due to metallicity effects on their period–luminosity relations. We obtained new high-resolution ( R ∼ 81,000), high-signal-to-noise (S/N ∼ 50–150) multiepoch spectra of 42 out of 75 Cepheid standards using the ESPaDOnS instrument at the 3.6 m Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Our spectroscopic metallicity measurements are in good agreement with the literature values with systematic differences up to 0.1 dex due to different metallicity scales. We homogenized and updated the spectroscopic metallicities of all 75 Milky Way Cepheid standards and derived their multiwavelength ( GVIJHK _s ) period–luminosity–metallicity and period–Wesenheit–metallicity relations using the latest Gaia parallaxes. The metallicity coefficients of these empirically calibrated relations exhibit large uncertainties due to low statistics and a narrow metallicity range (Δ[Fe/H] = 0.6 dex). These metallicity coefficients are up to 3 times better constrained if we include Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud and range between −0.21 ± 0.07 and −0.43 ± 0.06 mag dex ^−1 . The updated spectroscopic metallicities of these Milky Way Cepheid standards were used in the Cepheid–supernovae distance ladder formalism to determine H _0 = 72.9 ± 1.0 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 , suggesting little variation (∼0.1 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 ) in the local H _0 measurements due to different Cepheid metallicity scales.

RR Lyrae variables are excellent Population II distance indicators thanks to their well-defined period–luminosity relations (PLRs) at infrared wavelengths. We present results of near-infrared (NIR) monitoring of Galactic globular clusters to empirically quantify the metallicity dependence of NIR PLRs for RR Lyrae variables. Our sample includes homogeneous, accurate, and precise photometric data for 964 RR Lyrae variables in 11 globular clusters covering a large metallicity range (Δ[Fe/H] ∼ 2 dex). We derive JHK _s -band period–luminosity–metallicity (PLZ) and period–Wesenheit–metallicity (PWZ) relations anchored using 346 Milky Way field RR Lyrae stars with Gaia parallaxes, and simultaneously solved for independent distances to globular clusters. We find a significant metallicity dependence of ∼0.2 mag dex ^−1 in the JHK _s -band PLZ and PWZ relations for RR Lyrae stars independent of the adopted metallicity scale. The metallicity coefficients and the zero-points of the empirical PLZ and PWZ relations are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the horizontal branch evolution and pulsation models. Furthermore, RR Lyrae–based distances to our sample of globular clusters are also statistically consistent with other independent measurements in the literature. RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) are pulsating stars, many of which also show a long-term variation called the Blazhko effect which is a modulation of amplitude and phase of the lightcurve. In this work, we searched for the incidence rate of the Blazhko effect in the first-overtone pulsating RR Lyrae (RRc) stars of the Galactic halo. The focus was on the Stripe 82 region in the Galactic halo which was studied by Sesar et al. using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. In their work, 104 RRLs were classified as RRc type. We combined their SDSS light curves with Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) data, and used them to document the Blazhko properties of these RRc stars. Our analysis showed that among the 104 RRc stars, eight were rather RRd stars, and were excluded from the study. Out of the remaining 96, 34 were Blazhko type, 62 were non-Blazhko type, giving the incidence rate of 35.42% for Blazhko RRc stars. The shortest Blazhko period found was 12.808 ± 0.001 days for SDSS 747380, while the longest was 3088 ± 126 days for SDSS 3585856. Combining SDSS and ZTF data sets increased the probability of detecting the small variations due to the Blazhko effect, and thus provided a unique opportunity to find longer Blazhko periods. We found that 85% of RRc stars had the Blazhko period longer than 200 days.

We present a systematic analysis to determine and improve the pulsation periods of 1637 known long-period Mira variables in M33 using gri -band light curves spanning ∼18 yr from several surveys, including the M33 variability survey, Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), intermediate PTF, and Zwicky Transient Facility. Based on these collections of light curves, we found that optical-band light curves that are as complete as possible are crucial to determine the periods of distant Miras. We demonstrated that the machine-learning techniques can be used to classify Miras into O-rich and C-rich based on the ( J − K _s ) period–color plane. Finally, We derived the distance modulus to M33 using O-rich Miras at maximum light together with our improved periods as 24.67 ± 0.06 mag, which is in good agreement with the recommended value given in the literature.

Earth-sized exoplanets that transit nearby, late-spectral-type red dwarfs will be prime targets for atmospheric characterization in the coming decade. Such systems, however, are difficult to find via widefield transit surveys like Kepler or TESS. Consequently, the presence of such transiting planets is unexplored and the occurrence rates of short-period Earth-sized planets around late-M dwarfs remain poorly constrained. Here, we present the deepest photometric monitoring campaign of 22 nearby late-M dwarf stars, using data from over 500 nights on seven 1–2 m class telescopes. Our survey includes all known single quiescent northern late-M dwarfs within 15 pc. We use transit injection-and-recovery tests to quantify the completeness of our survey, successfully identify most (>80%) transiting short-period (0.5–1 days) super-Earths ( R >1.9 R _⊕ ), and are sensitive (∼50%) to transiting Earth-sized planets (1.0–1.2 R _⊕ ). Our high sensitivity to transits with a near-zero false-positive rate demonstrates an efficient survey strategy. Our survey does not yield a transiting planet detection, yet it provides the most sensitive upper limits on transiting planets orbiting our target stars. Finally, we explore multiple hypotheses about the occurrence rates of short-period planets (from Earth-sized planets to giant planets) around late-M dwarfs. We show, for example, that giant planets with short periods (

SX Phoenicis (SXP) variables are short-period pulsating stars that exhibit a period–luminosity (PL) relation. We derived the gri -band PL and extinction-free period–Wesenheit (PW) relations, as well as the period-color and reddening-free period-Q-index relations for 47 SXP stars located in 21 globular clusters, using the optical light curves taken from Zwicky Transient Facility. These empirical relations were derived for the first time in the gri filters except for the g -band PL relation. We used our gi -band PL and PW relations to derive a distance modulus to Crater II dwarf spheroidal which hosts one SXP variable. Assuming that the fundamental and first-overtone pulsation mode for the SXP variable in Crater II, we found distance moduli of 20.03 ± 0.23 mag and 20.37 ± 0.24 mag, respectively, using the PW relation, where the latter is in excellent agreement with independent RR Lyrae based distance to Crater II dwarf galaxy.

We present the first gri -band period–luminosity (PL) and period–Wesenheit (PW) relations for the fundamental mode anomalous Cepheids. These PL and PW relations were derived from a combined sample of five anomalous Cepheids in globular cluster M92 and the Large Magellanic Cloud, both of which have distance accurate to ∼1% available from literature. Our g -band PL relation is similar to the B -band PL relation as reported in previous study. We applied our PL and PW relations to anomalous Cepheids discovered in dwarf galaxy Crater II, and found a larger but consistent distance modulus than the recent measurements based on RR Lyrae. Our calibrations of gri -band PL and PW relations, even though less precise due to small number of anomalous Cepheids, will be useful for distance measurements to dwarf galaxies.

In this paper, we explore the possibility of using the Wesenheit function to derive individual distances to Galactic Cepheids, as the dispersion of the reddening-free Wesenheit function is smaller than the optical period--luminosity (P-L) relation. When compared to the distances from various methods, the averaged differences between our results and published distances range from -0.061 to 0.009, suggesting that the Wesenheit function can be used to derive individual Cepheid distances. We have also constructed Galactic P-L relations and selected Wesenheit functions based on the derived distances. A by-product from this work is the derivation of Large Magellanic Cloud distance modulus when calibrating the Wesenheit function. It is found to be 18.531 ± 0.043 mag. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the synthetic period--luminosity (P-L) relations in Spitzer's IRAC bands, based on a series of theoretical pulsation models with varying metal and helium abundance, were investigated. Selected sets of these synthetic P-L relations were compared to the empirical IRAC band P-L relations recently determined from Galactic and Magellanic Clouds Cepheids. For the Galactic case, synthetic P-L relations from model sets with (Y = 0.26, Z = 0.01), (Y = 0.26, Z = 0.02), and (Y = 0.28, Z = 0.02) agree with the empirical Galactic P-L relations derived from the Hubble Space Telescope parallaxes. For Magellanic Cloud Cepheids, the synthetic P-L relations from model sets with (Y = 0.25, Z = 0.008) agree with both of the empirical Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud P-L relations. Analysis of the synthetic P-L relations from all model sets suggested that the IRAC band P-L relations may not be independent of metallicity, as the P-L slopes and intercepts could be affected by the metallicity and/or helium abundance. We also derive the synthetic period--color (P-C) relations in the IRAC bands. Non-vanishing synthetic P-C relations were found for certain combinations of IRAC band filters and metallicity. However, the synthetic P-C relations disagreed with the [3.6]-[8.0] P-C relation recently found for the Galactic Cepheids. The synthetic [3.6]-[4.5] P-C slope from the (Y = 0.25, Z = 0.008) model set, on the other hand, is in excellent agreement to the empirical LMC P-C counterpart, if a period range 1.0 < log(P) < 1.8 is adopted. We present Period–Luminosity and Period–Luminosity–Color relations at maximum light for Mira variables in the Magellanic Clouds using time-series data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) and Gaia data release 2. The maximum-light relations exhibit a scatter typically up to ∼30% smaller than their mean-light counterparts. The apparent magnitudes of oxygen-rich Miras at maximum light display significantly smaller cycle-to-cycle variations than at minimum light. High-precision photometric data for Kepler Mira candidates also exhibit stable magnitude variations at the brightest epochs, while their multi-epoch spectra display strong Balmer emission lines and weak molecular absorption at maximum light. The stability of maximum-light magnitudes for Miras possibly occurs due to the decrease in the sensitivity to molecular bands at their warmest phase. At near-infrared wavelengths, the period–luminosity relations (PLRs) of Miras display similar dispersion at mean and maximum light with limited time-series data in the Magellanic Clouds. A kink in the oxygen-rich Mira PLRs is found at 300 days in the VI-bands, which shifts to longer periods (∼350 days) at near-infrared wavelengths. Oxygen-rich Mira PLRs at maximum light provide a relative distance modulus, Δμ = 0.48 ± 0.08 mag, between the Magellanic Clouds with a smaller statistical uncertainty than the mean-light relations. The maximum-light properties of Miras can be very useful for stellar atmosphere modeling and distance scale studies provided their stability and the universality can be established in other stellar environments in the era of extremely large telescopes. We describe ZStreak, a semi-real-time pipeline specialized in detecting small, fast-moving, near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), which is currently operating on the data from the newly commissioned Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. Based on a prototype originally developed by Waszczak et al. (2017) for the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), the predecessor of ZTF, ZStreak features an improved machine-learning model that can cope with the 10× data rate increment between PTF and ZTF. Since its first discovery on 2018 February 5 (2018 CL), ZTF/ZStreak has discovered 45 confirmed new NEAs over a total of 232 observable nights until 2018 December 31. Most of the discoveries are small NEAs, with diameters less than ∼100 m. By analyzing the discovery circumstances, we find that objects having the first to last detection time interval under 2 hr are at risk of being lost. We will further improve real-time follow-up capabilities, and work on suppressing false positives using deep learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a novel algorithm for scheduling the observations of time-domain imaging surveys. Our integer linear programming approach optimizes an observing plan for an entire night by assigning targets to temporal blocks, enabling strict control of the number of exposures obtained per field and minimizing filter changes. A subsequent optimization step minimizes slew times between each observation. Our optimization metric self-consistently weights contributions from time-varying airmass, seeing, and sky brightness to maximize the transient discovery rate. We describe the implementation of this algorithm on the surveys of the Zwicky Transient Facility and present its on-sky performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current time domain facilities are finding several hundreds of transient astronomical events a year. The discovery rate is expected to increase in the future as soon as new surveys such as the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and the Large Synoptic Sky Survey (LSST) come online. Presently, the rate at which transients are classified is approximately one order or magnitude lower than the discovery rate, leading to an increasing “follow-up drought”. Existing telescopes with moderate aperture can help address this deficit when equipped with spectrographs optimized for spectral classification. Here, we provide an overview of the design, operations and first results of the Spectral Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM), operating on the Palomar 60-inch telescope (P60). The instrument is optimized for classification and high observing efficiency. It combines a low-resolution (R ∼ 100) integral field unit (IFU) spectrograph with “Rainbow Camera” (RC), a multi-band field acquisition camera which also serves as multi-band (ugri) photometer. The SEDM was commissioned during the operation of the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) and has already lived up to its promise. A systematic study on the long-term periodicities of known Galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs) was conducted. Among 1580 known CVs, 344 sources were matched and extracted from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) data repository. The PTF light curves were combined with the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS) light curves and analyzed. Ten targets were found to exhibit long-term periodic variability, which is not frequently observed in the CV systems. These long-term variations are possibly caused by various mechanisms, such as the precession of the accretion disk, hierarchical triple star system, magnetic field change of the companion star, and other possible mechanisms. We discuss the possible mechanisms in this study. If the long-term period is less than several tens of days, the disk precession period scenario is favored. However, the hierarchical triple star system or the variations in magnetic field strengths are most likely the predominant mechanisms for longer periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigation of period–color (PC) and amplitude–color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with the photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the (V − R)MACHO or (V − I) colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by analyzing the RR Lyraes in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 Region. Multi-epoch data are available for RR Lyraes located within the footprint of the Stripe 82 Region in five (ugriz) bands. We present the PC and AC relations at maximum and minimum light in four colors: (u − g)0, (g − r)0, (r − i)0, and (i − z)0, after they are corrected for extinction. We found that the PC and AC relations for this sample of RR Lyraes show a complex nature in the form of flat, linear or quadratic relations. Furthermore, the PC relations at minimum light for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars are separated according to the Oosterhoff type, especially in the (g − r)0 and (r − i)0 colors. If only considering the results from linear regressions, our results are quantitatively consistent with the theory of HIF-photosphere interaction for both fundamental and first overtone RR Lyraes. In this work, we updated the catalog of Galactic Cepheids with 24 μm photometry by cross-matching the positions of known Galactic Cepheids to the recently released MIPSGAL point source catalog. We have added 36 new sources featuring MIPSGAL photometry in our analysis, thus increasing the existing sample to 65. Six different sources of compiled Cepheid distances were used to establish a 24 μm period–luminosity (P–L) relation. Our recommended 24 μm P–L relation is with an estimated intrinsic dispersion of 0.20 mag, and is derived from 58 Cepheids exhibiting distances based on a calibrated Wesenheit function. The slopes of the P–L relations were steepest when tied solely to the 10 Cepheids exhibiting trigonometric parallaxes from the Hubble Space Telescope and Hipparcos. Statistical tests suggest that these P–L relations are significantly different from those associated with other methods of distance determination, and simulations indicate that difference may arise from the small sample size. In this paper we present multi-band period–luminosity (P–L) relations for fundamental mode Cepheids in the SMC. The optical VI-band mean magnitudes for these SMC Cepheids were taken from the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalog. We also matched the OGLE-III SMC Cepheids to 2MASS and SAGE-SMC catalog to derive mean magnitudes in the JHK-bands and the four Spitzer IRAC bands, respectively. All photometry was corrected for extinction by adopting Zaritsky’s extinction map. Cepheids with periods smaller than ∼2.5 days were removed from the sample. In addition to the extinction corrected P–L relations in nine filters from optical to infrared, we also derived the extinction-free Wesenheit function for these Cepheids. We tested the nonlinearity of these SMC P–L relations (except the -band P–L relation) at 10 days: none of the P–L relations show statistically significant evidence of nonlinearity. When compared to the P–L relations in the LMC, the t-test results revealed that there is a difference between the SMC/LMC P–L slopes only in the V- and J-band. Further, we found excellent agreement between the SMC/LMC Wesenheit P–L slope. The difference in LMC and SMC Period–Wesenheit relation LMC and SMC zero points was found to be mag.
