Abstract

Piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) in the literature typically operate with a single conversion mechanism (either d 31 or d 33); the output power, therefore, is limited, and not sufficient to sustainably energize low-power electronics. In this study, a nonlinear PEH with coupled d 31 and d 33 modes is designed and evaluated. An axially moving piezoelectric beam (AMPB) was applied to investigate the contribution of d 31 and d 33 to the output, and the critical parameters of the configuration were determined. A distributed parametric electromechanical model was established to characterize the non-linear dynamics of AMPB with d 31 and d 33 modes. The Galerkin approach and the harmonic-balance approach were employed conjointly to investigate the forced response of the energy harvesting system. The axial velocity's effects upon energy harvesting were as well discussed. Comparison of the frequency response functions (FRFs) for voltage and power output between energy structures of d 31 and d 33 modes revealed several discrepancies. For instance, the voltage and power output of the d 33 mode were greater than those of d 31 mode for low frequencies, and the difference between the two modes decreased as the frequency increased. For the composite mode d 31 and d 33, under the same parameter conditions, the voltage and power output were greater than the output of any single mode. The analytical results were supported by a numerical method through the finite difference method. Both analytical and numerical results indicated the FRF could be increased by increasing the excitation amplitude, reducing the damping coefficient, or increasing the electrode spacing. The present study showed the efficiency of the use of the FRF using nonlinear transverse vibration of AMPB for d 31 and d 33 modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. A Long Stream of Metal-poor Cool Gas around a Massive Starburst Galaxy at z = 2.67.

Abstract

We present the first detailed dissection of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of massive starburst galaxies at z > 2. Our target is a submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z = 2.674 that has a star formation rate of 1200 M⊙ yr−1 and a molecular gas reservoir of 1.3 × 1011M⊙. We characterize its CGM with two background QSOs at impact parameters of 93 kpc and 176 kpc. We detect strong H i and metal-line absorption near the redshift of the SMG toward both QSOs, each consisting of three main subsystems spanning over 1500 km s−1. The absorbers show remarkable kinematic and metallicity coherence across a separation of ∼86 kpc. In particular, the cool gas in the CGM of the SMG exhibits high H i column densities (), a low metallicity ([M/H] ≈ −2.0), and nearly the same radial velocity (δv ∼ −300 km s−1). While the H i column densities match previous results on the massive halos hosting QSOs, the metallicity is lower by more than an order of magnitude, making it an outlier in the line width−metallicity relation of damped Lyα absorbers. The large physical extent, the velocity coherence, the high surface densities, and the low metallicity are all consistent with the cool, inflowing, and near-pristine gas streams predicted to penetrate hot massive halos at z > 1.5. We estimate a total gas accretion rate of ∼100 M⊙ yr−1 from three such streams. At this rate, it takes only a gigayear to acquire the molecular gas reservoir of the central starburst. Abstract

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as ¿The Cannon¿ and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. Abstract

Galaxies in dense environments, such as groups and clusters, experience various processes by which galaxies gain and lose gas. Using data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, we previously reported the discovery of a giant (6—8 kpc in diameter) Hα blob, Totoro, about 8 kpc away from a pair of galaxies (Satsuki and Mei) residing in a galaxy group that is experiencing a group–group merger. Here, we combine interferometric 12CO(1–0) molecular gas data, new wide-field Hα, u-band data, and published X-ray data to determine the origin of the blob. Several scenarios are discussed to account for its multiwavelength properties, including (1) Hα gas being stripped from the galaxy Satsuki by ram pressure, (2) a separated low-surface-brightness galaxy, (3) gas being ejected or ionized by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), and (4) a cooling intragroup medium (IGM). Scenarios (1) and (2) are less favored by the present data. Scenario (3) is also less likely as there is no evidence for an active ongoing AGN in the host galaxy. We find that the CO (cold) and Hα (warm) gas coexist with X-ray (hot) structures; moreover, the derived cooling time is within the regime where molecular and Hα gas are expected. The coexistence of gas with different temperatures also agrees with that of cooling gas in other systems. Our multiwavelength results strongly suggest that the CO and Hα gas are the product of cooling from the IGM at its current location, i.e., cooling has occurred, and may be ongoing, well outside the host-galaxy core. Abstract

In order to measure the leakage of substation equipment's SF6 gas in the charged state, the current practice is the single infrared imaging in the power industry. But there are different factors such as wind speed, leak detection position, leak imaging can only be seen a flat area on the graph, not accurate positioning. The method in this paper is to joint spot and side, and first with infrared imaging legal out a flat area roughly, then gradually narrowed the leaking range by infrared absorption method, until the biggest SF6 gas density is detected, and it is just the leaking position. The method in the gas leakage detection of GIS substation charged is prevalent. The article has carried on the thorough analysis to the technology and successfully applied to the field of measurement.

Abstract

ZnO films are prepared on glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at different oxygen pressures, and the effects of oxygen pressure on the structure and optoelectrical properties of as-grown ZnO films are investigated. The results show that the crystallite size and surface roughness of the films increase, but the carrier concentration and optical energy gap E-g decrease with increasing oxygen pressure. Only UV emission is found in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of all the samples, and its intensity increases with oxygen pressure. Furthermore, there are marked differences in structure and properties between the films grown at low oxygen pressures (0.003 and 0.2 Pa) and the films grown at high oxygen pressures (24 and 150 Pa), which is confirmed by the fact that the crystallite size and UV emission intensity markedly increase, but the carrier concentration markedly decreases as oxygen pressure increases from 0.2 to 24 Pa. These results show that the crystal quality, including the microstructural quality and stoichiometry proportion, of the prepared ZnO films improves as oxygen pressure increases, particularly from 0.2 to 24 Pa.

Abstract

We propose an experimental scheme of using the far-off resonance optical dipole force to control tunable collapse of Bose-Einstein condensation with attractive interactions. This scheme can conveniently alter collapse phenomena while keeping interatomic processes unchanged. Effects on the critical interaction strength and time delay are studied with numerical simulation. We show that for the blue-detuning case those two quantities are increased while for the red-detuning case they are decreased.

Abstract

We apply the interpolation procedure to calculate the stationary probability distribution of the colored-loss-noise model of a single-mode dye laser operating above the threshold with correlation time τ covering a very wide range. By stochastic Runge-Kutta algorithm, we also carry out numerical simulations of steady-state properties. Comparing the results of the interpolation procedure and the unified colored-noise approximation with simulation results, we find that the agreement between the results of the interpolation procedure and the simulation results is much better than that of the unified colored-noise approximation when correlation time τ covers a range from moderate to large. We conclude that the interpolation procedure really improve the accuracy of predictions for this system.

Abstract

We report the realization of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute rubidium gas. The BEC was achieved in a quadrupole and Ioffe configuration trap. The number of condensed atoms is around 4×104 in total 5×105, and the transition temperature is 250 nK. We have studied the light scattering of the atom cloud and the condensate in a tightly confined magnetic trap. We show that it is possible to use the diffraction patterns in the near-resonant imaging of the trapped cold atomic samples to give the information of the BEC phase transition.

Abstract

The role of SiO2/Si3N4 interfacial transition (IFT) layer in the oxide–nitride–oxide (ONO) tri-layer is quantitatively analyzed for the first time by simulating the temperature and stress-accelerated retention characteristics of p-channel silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon (SONOS) devices. The ONO tri-layer is modeled as an alloy-dielectric by changing the atomic concentration of silicon, oxygen and nitrogen. It is revealed that simulated results including the IFT layer are more consistent with the experimental data than those neglecting the IFT layer. In addition, the results show that the trapped charge density in IFT layer is two times larger than in the bulk Si3N4 film, due to the oxygen atoms penetrated from SiO2 cause the extrinsic defects in the IFT layer. The energy levels of the trapped charge are continuously distributed, and the peak value is ~1.6 eV below the conduction band of the ONO tri-layer with a full width at half maximum of 0.45 eV.

Abstract

The gate-tunable terahertz (THz) absorption of graphene layers with a resonant metal back reflector (RMBF) is theoretically investigated. We demonstrate that the THz absorption of graphene with RMBF can vary from nearly negligible to nearly total by tuning the external gate voltage. This peculiar nearly total THz absorption can be attributed to the Fabry-Perot cavity effect, which enhances the absorption and reduces the reflection of graphene. The absorption spectra of the graphene-RMBF structure can also be tailored in bandwidth and center frequency by changing the thickness and dielectric constant of the spacer layer.

Abstract

A comprehensive numerical study of threshold voltage fluctuation (ΔV T) in scaled NAND flash memory caused by random telegraph noise (RTN) and discrete dopant fluctuation (RDF) in both the channel and the cell-to-cell space [source/drain (S/D)] region was carried out. Following a three-dimensional (3D) Monte Carlo (MC) procedure, the statistical distribution of ΔV T is estimated, considering the effects of both the random placement of discrete doping atoms and a discrete single trap at the tunnel oxide/substrate interface. The result demonstrates the significant influence of the doping in the S/D regions. For the cells with and without an S/D junction, the electron concentration in the S/D region is determined by the pass voltage of the unselected cell (V pass) and the neighboring cell V T (V T(n)), owing to the fringing fields of neighboring floating gates (FGs). As a result, ΔV T increases in the S/D region as V pass - V T(n) decreases. The fluctuation amplitude strongly depends on the [single-trap RTN] position along the cell length (L) and width (W) directions. For the cell shape with rounding of the active area (AA) at the shallow trench isolation (STI) edge, the results indicate that the high ΔV T area moves from the AA edge towards the center area along the W-direction.

Abstract

In this study, we precisely investigate the charge distribution in SiN layer by dynamic programming of channel hot hole induced hot electron injection (CHHIHE) in p-channel silicon–oxide–nitride–oxide–silicon (SONOS) memory device. In the dynamic programming scheme, gate voltage is increased as a staircase with fixed step amplitude, which can prohibits the injection of holes in SiN layer. Three-dimensional device simulation is calibrated and is compared with the measured programming characteristics. It is found, for the first time, that the hot electron injection point quickly traverses from drain to source side synchronizing to the expansion of charged area in SiN layer. As a result, the injected charges quickly spread over on the almost whole channel area uniformly during a short programming period, which will afford large tolerance against lateral trapped charge diffusion by baking.

Abstract

The influences of optical fields on the tunneling time in graphene are investigated in real time using the finite-difference time-domain method. The tunneling time of electrons irradiated by an optical field is significantly different from that observed in traditional quantum tunneling. We found that when the barrier width increases, the group delay becomes constant for the reflected wave packet, but increases linearly for the transmitted wave packet. This peculiar tunneling effect can be attributed to current leakage in a time-dependent barrier generated via the optical Stark effect.

Abstract

Strong gravitational lenses are now being routinely discovered in wide-field surveys at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths. We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) high-spatial resolution imaging and Gemini-South and Multiple Mirror Telescope optical spectroscopy of strong lens candidates discovered in the two widest extragalactic surveys conducted by the Herschel Space Observatory: the Herschel-Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). From a sample of 30 Herschel sources with S500 > 100 mJy, 21 are strongly lensed (i.e., multiply imaged), 4 are moderately lensed (i.e., singly imaged), and the remainder require additional data to determine their lensing status. We apply a visibility-plane lens modeling technique to the SMA data to recover information about the masses of the lenses as well as the intrinsic (i.e., unlensed) sizes (rhalf) and far-infrared luminosities (LFIR) of the lensed submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). The sample of lenses comprises primarily isolated massive galaxies, but includes some groups and clusters as well. Several of the lenses are located at zlens > 0.7, a redshift regime that is inaccessible to lens searches based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy. The lensed SMGs are amplified by factors that are significantly below statistical model predictions given the 500 μm flux densities of our sample. We speculate that this may reflect a deficiency in our understanding of the intrinsic sizes and luminosities of the brightest SMGs. The lensed SMGs span nearly one decade in LFIR (median LFIR = 7.9 × 1012L☼) and two decades in FIR luminosity surface density (median ΣFIR = 6.0 × 1011L☼ kpc–2). The strong lenses in this sample and others identified via (sub-)mm surveys will provide a wealth of information regarding the astrophysics of galaxy formation and evolution over a wide range in redshift. Abstract

A sample of 12,614 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with stellar mass >109.5M☼ between 0.6 < z < 0.8 from COSMOS is selected to study the intrinsic scatter of the correlation between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass. We derive SFR from ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) luminosities. A stacking technique is adopted to measure IR emission for galaxies undetected at 24 μm. We confirm that the slope of the mass-SFR relation is close to unity. We examine the distributions of specific SFRs (SSFRs) in four equally spaced mass bins from 109.5M☼ to 1011.5M☼. Different models are used to constrain the scatter of SSFR for lower mass galaxies that are mostly undetected at 24 μm. The SFR scatter is dominated by the scatter of UV luminosity and gradually that of IR luminosity at increasing stellar mass. We derive SSFR dispersions of 0.18, 0.21, 0.26, and 0.31 dex with a typical measurement uncertainty of ≲ 0.01 dex for the four mass bins. Interestingly, the scatter of the mass-SFR relation seems not constant in the sense that the scatter in SSFR is smaller for SFGs of stellar mass <1010.5M☼. If confirmed, this suggests that the physical processes governing star formation become systematically less violent for less massive galaxies. The SSFR distribution for SFGs with intermediate mass 1010-1010.5M☼ is characterized by a prominent excess of intense starbursts in comparison with other mass bins. We argue that this feature reflects that both violent (e.g., major/minor mergers) and quiescent processes are important in regulating star formation in this intermediate-mass regime.
