We propose a theoretical model (cavityless pulsed solid-state-laser theory) to analyze the pulse characteristics of cavity-less solid-state lasers. A high gain Nd:YVO4end-pumped cavityless laser system is adopted to verify the theoretical model. It shows that the performance of output energy and pulse width achieved in cavityless configuration is better than that in resonator configuration when the small-signal gain reaches the saturated level. The simulation results calculated by our theoretical model agree very well with the experimental results. This agreement proves the validity of our theoretical model, which has great importance for theoretical analyses of high gain pulsed laser. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the non-equilibrium Keldysh Green’s function technique, we investigate electron transport properties of a system consisting of multiple three-quantum-dot rings. The conductance as a function of the electron energy is numerically calculated. An antiresonance point emerges in the conductance spectra and evolves into a well-defined insulating band with the increasing number of three-quantum-dot rings. The position of the well-defined insulating band can be modulated by varying the tunneling coupling strength between adjacent three-quantum-dot rings. When an external magnetic flux is introduced, several to 100% spin-polarized windows will occur due to the Zeeman splitting. These results strongly suggest that this device may realize multiple functions including quantum switch and efficient spin filtering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The anchoring property of the substrate surface of liquid crystal cells plays an important role in display and nondisplay fields. This property directly affects the deformation of liquid crystal molecules to change the phase difference through liquid crystal cells. In this paper, a test method based on the alternating-current bridge is proposed to determine the capacitance of liquid crystal cells and thus measure the anchoring energy of the substrate surface. The anchoring energy can be obtained by comparing the capacitance–voltage curves of twisted nematic liquid crystal cells with different anchoring properties in experimental and theoretical results simulated on the basis of Frank elastic theory. Compared with the other methods to determine the anchoring energy, our proposed method requires a simple treatment of liquid crystal cells and allows easy and high-accuracy measurements, thereby expanding the test ideas on the performance parameters of liquid crystal devices. Based on the experimental phenomena of flexoelectric response at defect sites in nematic inversion walls conducted by Kumar et al., we gave the theoretical analysis using the Frank elastic theory. When a direct-current electric field normal to the plane of the substrate is applied to the parallel aligned nematic liquid crystal cell with weak anchoring, the rotation of ±1 defects in the narrow inversion walls can be exhibited. The free energy of liquid crystal molecules around the +1 and –1 defect sites in the nematic inversion walls under the electric field was formulated and the electric-field-driven structural changes at the defect site characterized by polar and azimuthal angles of the local director were simulated. The results reveal that the deviation of azimuthal angle induced by flexoelectric effect are consistent with the switching of extinction brushes at the +1 and −1 defects obtained in the experiment conducted by Kumar et al. We perform molecular beam epitaxy growth and scanning tunneling microscopy study of copper diselenide (CuSe2) films on SrTiO3(001). Using a Se-rich condition, the single-phase pyrite CuSe2 grows in the Stranski—Krastanov (layer-plus-island) mode with a preferential orientation of (111). Our careful inspection of both the as-grown and post-annealed CuSe2 films at various temperatures invariably shows a Cu-terminated surface, which, depending on the annealing temperature, reconstructs into two distinct structures and . The Cu termination is supported by the depressed density of states near the Fermi level, measured by in-situ low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy.
