Tungsten, an essential refractory metal material, has the characteristics of high melting and boiling points, high hardness, low expansion coefficient, and low vapor pressure. An indirect strategy to print three-dimensional (3D) refractory metal materials via digital light processing (DLP) followed by a post-treatment process was proposed. To analyze this strategy, a transparent ink with tungsten salts was developed, printed into a 3D precursor via DLP, and subsequently transited into 3D porous tungsten. The ultraviolet rheological properties and stability of the ink, transition process from the precursor to a 3D article, and the properties of the obtained 3D porous tungsten were investigated. This ink was preferable for DLP 3D printing, possessing consistency, stability and favorable absorbance at the wavelength of 385 nm. With increasing temperature, the weight of the tungsten salt in the 3D precursor decreased by 8.97% and was transited to tungsten oxide below 460 °C, reduced to pure nano-sized tungsten at approximately 700 °C, and finally sintered into porous articles. The organics initially contributed to polymerization during printing as well as reduction as a carbon reducer after pyrolysis. The pore size distribution of porous tungsten is nonlinear or multimodal, depending on the final sintering temperature. At 1200 °C, two distinct peaks are observed in the pore distribution curves of the products. At 1400 °C, the small pore as a whole decreases from approximately 100–1000 nm. Correspondingly, the relative density of the samples increased with temperature.

We propose an extended BCS–Hubbard model and investigate its ground state phase diagram in an external magnetic field. By mapping the model onto a model of spinless fermions coupled with conserving Z 2 variables which are mimicked by pseudospins, the model is shown to be exactly solvable along the symmetric lines for an arbitrary on-site Hubbard interaction on the bipartite lattice. In the zero field limit, the ground states exhibit an antiferromagnetic order of pseudospins. In the large field limit, on the other hand, the pseudospins are fully polarized ordered. With the increase of the applied field, a first-order phase transition occurs between these kinds of phases when the on-site Coulomb interaction is less than a critical value U c. Above this critical U c, a novel intermediate phase emerges between the fully polarized and antiferromagnetic phases. The ground states in this phase are macroscopically degenerate, like in a spin ice, and the corresponding entropy scales linearly with the lattice size at zero temperature.

In this work, the efficient extraction of uranium in solution using Al2O3–SiO2-T was reported. Kinetics and isotherm models indicated that the removal process of uranium on Al2O3–SiO2-T accorded with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, which showed that the adsorption process was a uniform mono-layer chemical behavior. The maximum adsorption capacity of Al2O3–SiO2-T reached 738.7 mg g−1, which was higher than AlNaO6Si2 (349.8 mg g−1) and Al2O3–SiO2-NT (453.1 mg g−1), indicating that the addition of template could effectively improve the adsorption performance of Al2O3–SiO2 to uranium. Even after five cycles of adsorption–desorption, the removal percentage of uranium on Al2O3–SiO2-T remained 96%. Besides, the extraction efficiency of uranium on Al2O3–SiO2-T was 72.5% in simulated seawater, which suggested that the Al2O3–SiO2-T was expected to be used for uranium extraction from seawater. Further, the interaction mechanism between Al2O3–SiO2-T and uranium species was studied. The results showed that the electrostatic interaction and complexation played key roles in the adsorption process of Al2O3–SiO2-T to uranium.

The ill-posed analytic continuation problem for Green's functions or self-energies can be done using the Pad\'e rational polynomial approximation. However, to extract accurate results from this approximation, high precision input data of the Matsubara Green's function are needed. The calculation of the Matsubara Green's function generally involves a Matsubara frequency summation which cannot be evaluated analytically. Numerical summation is requisite but it converges slowly with the increase of the Matsubara frequency. Here we show that this slow convergence problem can be significantly improved by utilizing the Pad\'e decomposition approach to replace the Matsubara frequency summation by a Pad\'e frequency summation, and high precision input data can be obtained to successfully perform the Pad\'e analytic continuation., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

In this study a woodpecker's hyoid apparatus was characterized to determine its impact mitigation mechanism using finite element (FE) analysis. The woodpecker's hyoid apparatus, comprising bone and muscle, has a unique geometry compared to those of other birds. The hyoid starts at the beak tip, surrounds the woodpecker's skull, and ends at the upper beak/front head intersection while being surrounded by muscle along the whole length. A FE model of the hyoid apparatus was created based on the geometry, microstructure, and mechanical properties garnered from our experimental measurements. We compared the impact mitigation capabilities of the hyoid apparatus with an idealized straight cylinder and a tapered cylinder. The results showed that the hyoid geometry mitigated a greater amount of pressure and impulse compared to the straight or tapered cylinders. The initially applied longitudinal wave lost its strength from attenuation and conversion to transverse shear waves. This is due to the spiral curvature and tapered geometry, which induced lateral displacement in the hyoid bone. The lateral displacement of the bony hyoid induced strains on the adjacent muscle, where the energy dissipated due to the muscle's viscoelasticity. Quantitatively, as the stress wave traveled from the anterior to the posterior end of the hyoid apparatus, its pressure decreased 75% and the associated impulse decreased 84%. The analysis of the woodpecker's hyoid apparatus provides a novel perspective on impact mitigation mediated by a spiral-shaped structure and viscoelastic biocomposite.

We introduce a slave-fermion formulation in which to study the charge dynamics of the half-filled Hubbard model on the square lattice. In this description, the charge degrees of freedom are represented by fermionic holons and doublons and the Mott-insulating characteristics of the ground state are the consequence of holon–doublon bound-state formation. The bosonic spin degrees of freedom are described by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, yielding long-ranged (Neel) magnetic order at zero temperature. Within this framework and in the self-consistent Born approximation, we perform systematic calculations of the average double occupancy, the electronic density of states, the spectral function and the optical conductivity. Qualitatively, our method reproduces the lower and upper Hubbard bands, the spectral-weight transfer into a coherent quasiparticle band at their lower edges and the renormalisation of the Mott gap, which is associated with holon–doublon binding, due to the interactions of both quasiparticle species with the magnons. The zeros of the Green function at the chemical potential give the Luttinger volume, the poles of the self-energy reflect the underlying quasiparticle dispersion with a spin-renormalised hopping parameter and the optical gap is directly related to the Mott gap. Quantitatively, the square-lattice Hubbard model is one of the best-characterised problems in correlated condensed matter and many numerical calculations, all with different strengths and weaknesses, exist with which to benchmark our approach. From the semi-quantitative accuracy of our results for all but the weakest interaction strengths, we conclude that a self-consistent treatment of the spin-fluctuation effects on the charge degrees of freedom captures all the essential physics of the antiferromagnetic Mott–Hubbard insulator. We remark in addition that an analytical approximation with these properties serves a vital function in developing a full understanding of the fundamental physics of the Mott state, both in the antiferromagnetic insulator and at finite temperatures and dopings.

We propose a modified spin-wave theory to study the 1/3 magnetization plateau of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. By the self-consistent inclusion of quantum corrections, the 1/3 plateau is stabilized over a broad range of magnetic fields for all spin quantum numbers, S. The values of the critical magnetic fields and the widths of the magnetization plateaus are fully consistent with recent numerical results from exact diagonalization and infinite projected entangled paired states., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Chinese Physics Letters

The current study presents a nanoscale in silico investigation of strain rate dependency of membrane (phospholipid bilayer) failure when placed under strip biaxial tension with two planar areas. The nanoscale simulations were conducted in the context of a multiscale modelling framework in which the macroscale damage (pore volume fraction) progression is delineated into pore nucleation (number density of pores), pore growth (size of pores), and pore coalescence (inverse of nearest neighbor distance) mechanisms. As such, the number density, area fraction, and nearest neighbor distances were quantified in association with the stress–strain behavior. Deformations of a 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) bilayer were performed using molecular dynamics to simulate mechanoporation of a neuronal cell membrane due to injury, which in turn can result in long-term detrimental effects that could ultimately lead to cell death. Structures with 72 and 144 phospholipids were subjected to strip biaxial tensile deformations at multiple strain rates. Formation of a water bridge through the phospholipid bilayer was the metric to indicate structural failure. Both the larger and smaller bilayers had similar behavior regarding pore nucleation and the strain rate effect on pore growth post water penetration. The applied strain rates, planar area, and cross-sectional area had no effect on the von Mises strains at which pores greater than 0.1 nm2 were detected (0.509 ± 7.8%) or the von Mises strain at failure (e failure = 0.68 ± 4.8%). Additionally, changes in bilayer planar and cross-sectional areas did not affect the stress response. However, as the strain rate increased from 2.0 × 108 s−1 to 1.0 × 109 s−1, the yield stress increased from 26.5 MPa to 66.7 MPa and the yield strain increased from 0.056 to 0.226.

We investigated the form of orbital ordering in the electronic nematic phase of iron-based superconductors by applying a group theoretical analysis on a realistic five-band model. We find the orbital order can be either of the inter-orbital s-wave form or intra-orbital d-wave form. From the comparison with existing ARPES measurements of band splitting, we find the orbital ordering in the 122 system is dominated by an intra-orbital d-wave component, while that of the 111 system is dominated by an inter-orbital s-wave component. We find both forms of orbital order are strongly entangled with the nematicity in the spin correlation of the system. The condensation energy of the magnetic ordered phase is found to be significantly improved (by more than 20%) when the degeneracy between the (π, 0) and (0, π) ordering pattern is lifted by the orbital order. We argue there should be a large difference in both the scattering rate and the size of the possible pseudogap on the electron pocket around the X = (π, 0) and Y = (0, π) point in the electronic nematic phase. We propose this as a possible origin for the observed nematicity in resistivity measurements.

The oriented heteroepitaxial diamond films were obtained on Si(100) substrate via electron emission in hot filament chemical vapor deposition with the orientation relationship of diamond //Si and //Si . The nucleation and subsequent growth of diamond films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that the electron emission from the diamond coating on the electrode played a critical role during the nucleation due to excition plasma. The maximum value of nucleation density was up to 1011 cm-2 on pristine Si surface at emission current of 250 mA. The effect of the electron emission on the reactive gas composition was analyzed by in situ infrared absorption, indicating that the concentration of CH4 and C2H2 near the substrate surface was extremely increased. This may be responsible for the enhanced nucleation by electron emission.
