The Mittelman–di Cicco–Walker (MDW) H α Sky Survey is an autonomously operated and ongoing all-sky imaging survey in the narrowband H α wavelength. The survey was founded by amateur astronomers and is presented here in its first stage of refinement for rigorous scientific use. Each field is exposed through an H α filter with a 3 nm bandwidth for a total of 4 hr, with a pixel scale of 3.″2. Here, we introduce the first Data Release of the MDW H α Survey (Data Release 0, or DR0), spanning 238 fields in the region of Orion (∼3100 deg ^2 ). DR0 includes: calibrated mean fields, star-removed mean fields, a point-source catalog matched to Data Release 1 of the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS1) and the Isaac Newton Telescope Galactic Plane Survey (IGAPS), and mosaics. ^3

High-speed and energy-efficient electro-optic (EO) switches are crucial for next-generation data communication systems. This paper presents a novel EO switch utilizing a multimode interference (MMI) coupler-based approach on a lithium-niobate (LiNbO _3 ) platform. The switch is designed with Bezier S-bend waveguides, leading to a significant reduction in bending loss to 0.18 dB. This Bezier-bend EO switch shows an excess loss of 0.33 dB and crosstalk of −20.44 dB for the bar port switching, while the cross port switching exhibits an excess loss of 0.64 dB and crosstalk of −13.66 dB. Applying a 3.27 V voltage achieves a balanced splitting ratio of 29:29:29 between the three outputs. The length of this EO switch is 4.09 mm, which requires 4.1 V to create a phase shift, showing a voltage efficiency of 1.68 V.cm. This paper presents a promising pathway for a novel EO switch design and introduces improved signal management for next-generation computing systems.

The growing demand for water in domestic, agricultural, and energy production applications poses a significant challenge for Jordan. This work assesses the role of brackish water desalination as an alternative to alleviate water scarcity in semi-arid regions. Desalination is still limited in its application in Jordan due to high electricity tariffs. Shifting to renewable sources such as solar energy, abundant in the country, is a feasible way to power technologies with a high energy demand. In this work, we study the brackish water desalination plant at the Hashemite University in Jordan that is powered by a photovoltaic (PV) solar system (the HU PV-BWRO). The plant’s performance was evaluated in the context of the water-energy nexus as a hybrid water supply solution. While this work integrates essential elements, such as water availability, technical options, economic viability, and agricultural management, the analysis primarily focuses on the technical and economic aspects related to water, energy, and food. Water assessment results indicate that the groundwater wells near the HU campus are at risk of quality degradation over time, as they have shown a slight increasing trend in salinization from 2015 to 2023. Energy assessment results show a promising performance from the HU PV-BWRO desalination plant, with a specific energy consumption (SEC) value of 1.2 kWh m ^−3 (140% to 400% less energy consumption compared with other Jordanian desalination plants of similar capacity). Unit price comparisons indicate that the energy cost of PV (0.042 USD/m ^3 ) is 5 times less than the cost of grid electricity (0.24 USD/m ^3 ). The operational cost of the solar desalination plant at full capacity, is USD 0.23/m ^3 . This is about 260% less than the operation cost for local, grid-powered desalination plants. Finally, it is estimated that by operating the plant at 50% of its total capacity, the produced water could be sufficient to irrigate up to 80% of the HU campus to increase agricultural production. This study highlights the importance of decreasing reliance on energy for water and food production, and it shows that the use of solar powered desalination could be used as an example in semi-arid regions, particularly in terms of integrating renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The tensile zone of concrete is prone to cracking due to its limited ability to withstand tension. To address this issue, steel reinforcement is used in these specific regions. The occurrence of little cracks might potentially facilitate the ingress of liquids and gases into the reinforcing material, hence inducing corrosion. Self-healing concrete can repair and seal minuscule cracks, thus impeding the formation of corrosion. This study investigates the potential application of fused deposition modeling (FDM) for generating novel vascular networks and tubes using polylactic acid (PLA) as the material. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) was fabricated using three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques, and its properties were compared to those of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) networks. The external diameter measured 5.6 mm, while the internal diameter measured 4 mm. utilized a 10 ml volume to apply healing agents, specifically organic polyethylene glycol liquid and nano-powder (fly ash) derived from recycled materials, to all vascular structures (1D, 2D, and 3D). This application was carried out using a planetary ball mill. Following this, the prepared tubes were incorporated into a concrete beam to introduce self-healing capabilities. The water-to-cement ratio (W/C) utilized for all concrete mixtures was 0.6%, while the definite mixture proportions were 1:2.16:2.98. The quantification of the self-healing phenomenon was conducted by evaluating the restoration of load-carrying capacity following the application of a repaired specimen to a four-point bending test. Furthermore, these enhancements resulted in improved durability, increased compressive strength, and enhanced other physical characteristics. The pipes that are manufactured can be utilized to produce innovative concrete that possesses the ability to undergo self-healing processes by combining low-viscosity healing solutions (PEG) with powders (nano fly ash) that are appropriate for this application by injection into the vascular network , making it well-suited for various self-healing applications.

Metal organic frameworks (MOF's) have gained considerable attention in the field of energy storage and supercapacitors applications. Herein, we synthesized copper oxide (CuO) through the precipitation method and concurrently derived from the solvothermal prepared copper-benzene dicarboxylate (Cu-BDC) by calcination. The integration of MOF-derived nanostructures with traditional CuO to form a hybrid electrode material, has not been extensively explored. The synthesized materials were characterized using x-ray Diffractometry, FTIR, XPS, Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller and morphological analysis was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) affirming the composite's nature. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic charge–discharge, and cyclic voltammetry were used to evaluate the electrochemical properties of electrode material. With a specific capacitance of 691 Fg−1 for CuO obtained from Cu-BDC (benzene dicarboxylic acid) and 236 Fg−1 for CuO via the precipitation method, measured at a scan rate of 5 m Vs−1 in 6 M KOH was found to be the optimal performance solution for the electrode material. The mesoporous structures are crucial for their absorption ability and improved ion transport, resulting in optimized electrochemical performance. Finally, we demonstrate significant improvements in specific capacitance and cycling stability compared to pure CuO-based electrodes, highlighting the potential of this composite structure for advanced supercapacitor applications.
