Large edge-localized modes (ELMs) were mitigated by gravitational injection of lithium granules into the upper X-point region of the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) device with tungsten plasma-facing components. The maximum ELM size was reduced by ∼70% in high βN H-mode plasmas. Large ELM stabilization was sustained for up to about 40 energy confinement times, with constant core radiated power and no evidence of high-Z or low-Z impurity accumulation. The lithium granules injection reduced the edge plasma pedestal density and temperature and their gradients, due to increased edge radiation and reduced recycling from the plasma-facing components. Ideal stability calculations using the ELITE code indicate that the stabilization of large ELMs correlates with improved stability of intermediate-n peeling-ballooning modes, due to reduced edge current resulting from the profile changes. The pedestal pressure reduction was partially offset by a core density increase, which resulted in a modest ∼7% drop in core stored energy and normalized energy confinement time. We surmise that the remnant small ELMs are triggered by the penetration of multiple Li granules just past the separatrix, similar to small ELMs triggered by deuterium pellet Futatani et al (2014 Nucl. Fusion 54 073008). This study extends previous ELM elimination with Li powder injection Maingi et al (2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 024003) in EAST because (1) use of small, dust-like powder and the related potential health hazards were eliminated, and (2) use of macroscopic granules should be more applicable to future devices, due to deeper penetration than dust particles, e.g. inside the separatrix with velocities ∼10 m s−1 in EAST. Multiple electromagnetic coherent modes with frequencies f ∼ 20–300 kHz and toroidal mode numbers n = 1 and n = 2 have been observed and investigated in radio-frequency heated H-mode plasmas of the EAST tokamak. The experimental results show that the two main branches of these coherent modes are driven by energetic electrons (EEs), which are produced in the processes of radio-frequency current drive and heating. Bicoherence analysis indicates that there are strong nonlinear mode interactions between the two branches (mother waves), i.e. one is in the low-frequency range of f ∼ 20–50 kHz and the other one is in the high-frequency range of f ∼ 120–250 kHz, and their nonlinear couplings can generate many harmonics (daughter waves). Both coherent modes propagate poloidally along the electron diamagnetic drift direction. The gyrokinetic eigenvalue simulations support the view that both the low-frequency and the high-frequency coherent modes observed in EAST are Alfvén eigenmode (AE) type, and the kinetic effects of background plasmas and EEs are responsible for the formation and excitation of AEs, respectively. The low-frequency coherent mode is identified as the kinetic beta-induced Alfvén eigenmode located in the edge, and the high-frequency coherent mode is radially global, which is characterized by a toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) in the core and also has the components of a kinetic TAE and ellipticity-induced Alfvén eigenmode in the outer region due to the large downshift of the Alfvén continuum gap from the core to the edge in H-mode discharges. The localized coupling among geodesic acoustic mode (GAM), tearing modes (TMs) and twin counter-propagating beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (BAEs) waves has been investigated in the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak. Before the appearance of TMs, typical continuous GAM is observed through the multi-channel Doppler backscattering (DBS) diagnostic. The twin BAEs can be excited after the burst of magnetic islands, which are localized to the q = 4 rational surface that is confirmed by the measurement of DBS array, where the GAM and twin BAEs are observed synchronically at R ≈ 2.23 m (normalized radius ρ ≈ 0.8). One reasonable excitation mechanism is proposed that the twin BAEs can be excited by the nonlinear interaction between GAM and magnetic islands. As the width of magnetic islands increases, the electromagnetic twin BAEs increase synchronically with the decreasing of electrostatic GAM, strongly suggesting that the electromagnetic components are pumped from three-wave interaction between electrostatic GAM and magnetic islands. Significant improvement of plasma performance in high-confinement mode (H-mode) discharges with favourable toroidal field Bt, i.e. the ion ∇B drift towards the primary X-point, has been widely observed in the EAST tokamak with pure radio-frequency heating in contrast to that with the unfavourable Bt. Statistical analysis indicates that plasma in the favourable Bt has higher core electron temperature, similar core ion temperature and relatively steeper pedestal density compared with that in the unfavourable Bt. The improvement in plasma performance is mainly contributed by the increase of core electron temperature in the favourable Bt. Further analysis indicates that the plasma with favourable Bt has much lower density and recycling in the scrape-off layer (SOL). Lower SOL density and recycling benefit the mitigation of parametric instability activity of lower hybrid wave (LHW), and thus facilitate the increase of core electron temperature in the favourable Bt. The performance improvement in the favourable Bt demonstrates to be more evident with high LHW power. Divertor local Er × B drift which can increase the backflow particles from the divertor region to the upstream region could be partly responsible for the much higher SOL plasma density in unfavourable Bt. These findings could facilitate the application of LHW power on future large fusion devices, such as the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor, to achieve high-performance steady-state operation. We report an observation of robust suppression of edge-localized modes (ELMs) in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), enabled by continuous boron (B) powder injection. Edge harmonic oscillations appear during B powder injection, providing sufficient particle transport to maintain constant density and avoid impurity accumulation in ELM-stable plasmas. Quasi-steady ELM suppression discharges are demonstrated with modest energy confinement improvement and over a wide range of conditions: heating power and technique variation, electron density range over a factor ∼3.5, deuterium or helium ion species, and with either direction of the toroidal magnetic field. ELM suppression is observed above a threshold edge B intensity and ceases within 0.5 s of termination of the B injection. In contrast to ELM suppression accompanied by recycling reduction during Li powder injection in NSTX and EAST (Maingi et al 2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 024003), reduced recycling due to hydrogenic species retention is unnecessary for the ELM suppression with B powder injection, paving the way for its consideration as an ELM control tool for future fusion devices. By injecting cryogenic deuterium pellets into H-mode plasmas with edge localized modes (ELMs) from the low-field side (LFS) on EAST tokamak, the impact of these pellets on the edge plasma can be investigated. In some cases of pellet injection (PI), the intermediate phase (I-phase), i.e, the dithering-like cycles, have been observed. Experiments show that during one dithering-like cycle, three phases can be distinguished, which are closely related to the variations in the pedestal density profiles and density gradient after PI. Phase 1 is characterized by rapid particle loss and a density pedestal crash, phase 2 has a relatively low density gradient and enhanced edge density fluctuation and phase 3 corresponds to the relatively fast recovery of the density pedestal and reduced edge density fluctuation. Through an experimental analysis, it is shown that the plasma will enter the I-phase when the edge line-averaged density increases beyond a certain threshold value after PI. H-I-H transitions are more likely to be observed when the edge line-averaged density is greater than the core line-averaged density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The edge localized mode (ELM) has been mitigated by n = 1 resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in EAST tokamak. The turbulence characteristics and transport during the ELM mitigation have been measured by a series of diagnostics. The edge coherent mode (ECM) with a frequency about 25 kHz almost disappears when ELM is mitigated. The scrape-off layer (SOL) radial turbulent transport is measured by a four-tip Langmuir probe mounted on the manipulator at the outer midplane, exhibiting a strong enhancement of outward particle during the ELM mitigation in the SOL region (3–25 mm outside the LCFS). This enhanced outward radial transport is mainly driven by the low frequency turbulence (< 50 kHz), and is compared with the particle flux deposited on divertor targets quantitatively, revealing a good agreement with each other. It is suggested that a new channel for particle exhaust induced by the low frequency turbulence is beneficial to maintain the ELM mitigation by RMP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
