The intensity of the green line (Fe xiv 5303 Å) is the strongest in the visible spectrum of the solar corona, and this line has been used as long-term powerful diagnostic tools for studying the coronal configurations and hot plasma dynamics. However, it remains unclear and an open question whether there exists close relationship between the green line intensities and the coronal extreme ultraviolet (EUV) line emissions for various coronal structures. In this paper, we use the green-line data by the Lijiang YOGIS Lyot coronagraph and the EUV data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instruments in order to perform direct comparisons and analyses, based on two algorithms developed to extract particular features in the low corona. It is found that, among the correlation coefficients obtained between the intensities of 5303 Å and the EUV lines, the coefficients between the green line and the 211 Å wavelength for different coronal structures and different limb locations always keep the highest values (ranging from 0.89 to 0.99), which has not been reported before. This result can be helpful and promising to link together the various physical processes involved at different heights in the corona by precisely tracking the bright loops or other features observed in 5303 Å above the limb down to the correct surface locations revealed by the 211 Å data. Furthermore, the ground-based observations of the coronal green line and the space-based EUV observations at 211 Å can advantageously complement each other when there is a need.

While the influence of liquid qualities, surface morphology, and operating circumstances on critical heat flux (CHF) in pool boiling has been extensively studied, the effect of the heater substrate has not. Based on the force balance analysis, a theoretical model has been developed to accurately predict the CHF in pool boiling on a heater substrate. An analytical expression for the CHF of a heater substrate is obtained in terms of the surface thermophysical property. It is indicated that the ratio of thermal conductivity (k) to the product of density (ρ) and specific heat (c p) is an essential substrate property that influences the CHF. By modifying the well-known force-balance-based CHF model (Kandlikar model), the thermal characteristics of the substrate are taken into consideration. The bias of predicted CHF values are within 5% compared with the experimental results.

Grain boundary directed spinodal decomposition has a substantial effect on the microstructure evolution and properties of polycrystalline alloys. The morphological selection mechanism of spinodal decomposition at grain boundaries is a major challenge to reveal, and remains elusive so far. In this work, the effect of grain boundaries on spinodal decomposition is investigated by using the phase-field model. The simulation results indicate that the spinodal morphology at the grain boundary is anisotropic bicontinuous microstructures different from the isotropic continuous microstructures of spinodal decomposition in the bulk phase. Moreover, at grain boundaries with higher energy, the decomposed phases are alternating α/β layers that are parallel to the grain boundary. On the contrary, alternating α/β layers are perpendicular to the grain boundary.

With the growing need on distributed power supply for portable electronics, energy harvesting from environment becomes a promising solution. Organic thermoelectric (TE) materials have advantages in intrinsic flexibility and low thermal conductivity, thus hold great prospect in applications as a flexible power generator from dissipated heat. Nevertheless, the weak electrical transport behaviors of organic TE materials have severely impeded their development. Moreover, compared with p-type organic TE materials, stable and high-performance n-type counterparts are more difficult to obtain. Here, we developed a n-type polyaniline-based hybrid with core-shell heterostructured Bi2S3@Bi nanorods as fillers, showing a Seebeck coefficient –159.4 μV/K at room temperature. Further, a couple of n/p legs from the PANI-based hybrids were integrated into an elastomer substrate forming a stretchable thermoelectric generator (TEG), whose function to output stable voltages responding to temperature differences has been demonstrated. The in situ output performance of the TEG under stretching could withstand up to 75% elongation, and stability test showed little degradation over a one-month period in the air. This study provides a promising strategy to develop stable and high thermopower organic TEGs harvesting heat from environment as long-term power supply.

With the ever increasing level of performance of energy conversion micro-devices, such as thin-film solar cells and thermoelectric micro-generators or coolers, their reliability and stability still remain a challenge. The high electrical and mechanical stability of an electrode is two of the critical factors that affect the long-term life of devices. Here we show that these factors can be achieved by constructing a 3D porous network of nanostructures in copper film using facile magnetron sputtering technology without any templates. The constructed 3D porous network of nanostructures in Cu film provides not only the advantages of light weight, prominently high conductivity, and large elastic deformation, but also the ability to absorb stress, preventing crack propagation, which is crucial for electrodes to maintain stable electrical and mechanical properties under working conditions. The nanopores inside the 3D network are capable of unrestrained deformation under applied stress resulting in strong elastic recovery. This work puts forward a feasible solution for manufacturing electrodes with excellent electrical and mechanical properties for micro-energy devices.

Carpet-like zinc films with unique nanowires are fabricated by using a simple physical evaporation method. The definite morphologies of the films endow the superhydrophobic material with a contact angle of about 157.9°, and by additional modification of CF3(CF2)7CH2CH2Si(OCH3)3 the water adhesive force could be tuned from 58.3 μN to 14.6 μN. In order to analyze the controllable adhesion of superhydrophobic Zn films, we study the microstructure and chemical compositions of the films by x-ray diffraction SEM, TEM, HRTEM and EDAX. Furthermore, a model based on the balance of micro-surface energy is proposed to illustrate the relationship of the geometry and wettability properties of the films. The model provides new insights into how to design-oriented microchannels and micro-protuberance on material surfaces, which is of benefit for controlling their ability of caught-collection in air bubbles and water-pinning collection.
