We have investigated different geometries of two-dimensional (2D) infinite length Ni nanowires of increasing width using spin density functional theory calculations. Our simulations demonstrate that the parallelogram motif is the most stable and structures that incorporate the parallelogram motif are more stable as compared to rectangular structures. The wires are conducting and the conductance channels increase with increasing width. The wires have a non-linear behavior in the ballistic anisotropic magnetoresistance ratios (BAMR) with respect to the magnetization directions. All 2D nanowires as well as Ni (1 1 1) and Ni (1 0 0) monolayer investigated are ferromagnetic under the Stoner criterion and exhibit enhanced magnetic moments as compared to bulk Ni and the respective Ni monolayers. The easy axis for all nickel nanowires under investigation is observed to be along the wire axis. The double rectangular nanowire exhibits a magnetic anomaly with a smaller magnetic moment when compared to Ni (1 0 0) monolayer and is the only structure with an easy axis perpendicular to the wire axis. The Stoner parameter which has been known to be structure independent in bulk and surfaces is found to vary with the structure and the width of the nanowires. The less stable rectangular and rhombus shaped nanowires have a higher ferromagnetic strength than parallelogram shaped nanowires.

We demonstrate a canted magnetization of biatomic zigzag Co chains grown on the 5 x 1 reconstructed Ir(001) surface using density functional theory calculations and spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) experiments. Biatomic Co chains grow in three different structural configurations and are all in a ferromagnetic state. Two chain types possess high symmetry due to two equivalent atomic strands and an easy magnetization direction which is along one of the principal crystallographic axes. The easy magnetization axis of the zigzag Co chains is canted away from the surface normal by an angle of 33 degrees. This giant effect is caused by the broken chain symmetry on the substrate in combination with the strong spin-orbit coupling of Ir. In this work we present the generalization of the model for chain formation in break-junctions, introduced by Thiess {\it et al.} [\onlinecite{Alex08}], to zigzag transition-metal chains with $s$ and $p$ impurities. We apply this extended model to study the producibility trends for noble-metal chains with impurities, often present in break junction experiments, namely, Cu, Ag and Au chains with H, C, O and N adatoms. Providing the material-specific parameters for our model from systematic full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave first-principles calculations, we find that the presence of such impurities crucially affects the binding properties of the noble-metal chains. We reveal that both, the impurity-induced bond strengthening and the formation of zigzag bonds, can lead to a significantly enhanced probability for chain formation in break junctions., 10 pages, 8 figures
