Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases that is characterized by progressive memory loss and two main pathological hallmarks, including the extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles. The microtubule-related protein tau is involved in the pathogenesis of many neurological diseases commonly known as tauopathies and is found to be abnormally hyperphosphorylated in AD and accumulated in neurons. Besides hyperphosphorylation, tau also undergoes abnormal glycosylation, ubiquitination, glycation, and other posttranslational modifications. These abnormalities lead to the aberrant aggregation of tau in the synaptic loci in AD. In this review, we highlighted the most recent studies about how tau is abnormally regulated and how those abnormalities play important roles in the pathogenesis of AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Posterior hip dislocation with concomitant femoral fracture is very rare. Here, we report a rare case of a 43-year-old man who was injured in a car accident. The patient sustained right posterior hip dislocation with concomitant right acetabular transverse and posterior wall fracture, ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture, and contralateral proximal femoral fracture (AO type 31-A3). Closed reduction of the hip was attempted, but failed. The acetabular fracture and posterior hip dislocation were reduced and acetabular fracture was fixed using plates through the Kocher-Langenbeck approach. The ipsilateral femoral fracture was treated with closed reduction and intramedullary nailing. The contralateral femoral fracture was treated with closed reduction and Gamma 3 nailing. Postoperative X-rays revealed reduction of the fractures. The patient achieved bone union and recovered function of the hip 4 months after surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Posterior shoulder dislocation is a rare entity in clinical practice. The FARES (Fast, Reliable, Safe) method is a well-validated, effective, and rapid approach to achieve reduction of anterior shoulder dislocation, but its use for posterior shoulder dislocation has not been reported previously. A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with acute posterior shoulder dislocation due to a fall experienced while inebriated. In recent years, traditional machine learning algorithms have been gradually replaced by deep learning algorithms. In the field of computer vision, convolutional neural network is considered to be the most successful deep learning model. Based on convolutional neural network, the accuracy of image classification has been greatly improved. In this paper, a method for semantic image segmentation based on convolutional neural network is proposed. Firstly, the disparity map is introduced to improve the segmentation accuracy. To obtain the disparity map with more continuous disparity values, an image smoothing method is used to optimize the disparity map. Then, based on the AlexNet network, a fully convolutional network architecture is proposed for semantic image segmentation. The unpooling operation is employed to restore the extracted features to their original sizes. The experimental results demonstrate that the network can achieve high pixel-wise prediction accuracy and that using RGB-D image as the input of the network can reduce the noisy segmentation outputs. The precursors of SnO2 nanoparticles at different temperatures were synthesized by hydro-thermal method, and then SnO2 nanoparticles were obtained by calcination in this paper. Then the structure and micromorphology were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the chemical composition of the products were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), finally, the photocatalytic degradation ability of prepared products were studied by ultraviolet absorption method. The results showed that the lowtemperature reaction is beneficial to the formation of particle products, and the calcined products were pure stannic oxide particles with rutile structure, which had good crystallinity, good dispersibility, uniform size and strong photocatalytic degradation ability. Background: Cannulated screws (4.0 mm) provide inter-fragmentary compression and stability to fractures. A guide wire is used to define the screw trajectory and hold the fracture fragment while the screw is being inserted. The cannulated shaft typically accommodates a 1.25 mm guide pin. Since the guide pin is very slender and undergoes elastic deformation during insertion, there is a high probability of pin breakage.Methods: The authors have devised a new way to place the 4.0 mm cannulated screws in a manner that prevents the intraoperative complication of guide wire breakage. For this technique, predrilling was achieved using a 2.0 mm K-wire which was subsequently replaced with a 1.25 mm guide pin under the protection of sleeve. 4.0 mm cannulated screws were then inserted into a defined trajectory over the guide pin.Results: Using the technique, over 20 patients were managed in our department over a period of two years without any complications.Conclusion: We have observed that patients treated with this method experience short operation time, combined with good clinical outcome and we recommend its use in cases where cannulated screw use is warranted. A hydrotalcite with Mg/Al molar ratio 2 was prepared by co-precipitation method and was characterized by XRD, TG/DTA, Zeta potential and BET surface area. The hydrotalcite was calcined at 500°C, with the dehydration from interlayer, the dehydroxilation from the brucite-like layer and the decomposition of carbonate successively, transformed into the mixed oxide type. The removal of thiocyanate from aqueous solution by using the original hydrotalcite and calcined hydrotalcite (HTC-500) was investigated. The results showed that the thiocyanate adsorption capacity of calcined hydrotalcite was much higher than that of the original form. Calcined hydrotalcite was particularly effective at removing thiocyanate, and that the effective range of pH for the thiocyanate removal are between 5.5–10.0. The experimental data of thiocyanate removal fit nicely with Langmuir isotherm, and the saturated adsorption uptake was 96.2 mg SCN^-/g HTC-500. The adsorption ofthiocyanate by calcined hydrotalcite follows first-order kinetics. And the intercalation to the structure recovery for calcined hydrotalcite. A signal-amplified mercury sensing biosensor with desired sensitivity was developed through firstly using the GFP mutant with fluorescence increasing response towards Hg 2+ as the reporter module. The developed biosensor showed response for Hg 2+ in a relatively wide range of 1-10,000 nmol/L, and the detection limit was improved one or two orders of magnitude in comparison with most metal-sensing biosensors in similar constructs. In addition, the biosensor could distinguish Hg 2+ easily from multiple metal ions and displayed strong adaptability to extensive pH conditions (pH 4.0-10.0). More importantly, the developed biosensor was able to provide an initial assessment of Hg 2+ spiked in the environmental water with the recoveries between 85.70% and 112.50%. The purpose of this study was to determine the expression of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) and explore its clinical significance in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients. The expression of GDF15 in EOC tissues and serum samples was evaluated using immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. The association of GDF15 expression with clinicopathologic parameters was analyzed. Survival time was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier technique and Cox regression model. Both in EOC tissues and serum, high GDF15 levels were obviously related with advanced International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, lymph node metastasis, ascites, and chemoresistance. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that EOC patients with high GDF15 expression showed poorer progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that GDF15 expression was an independent predictor of PFS in EOC patients. Our study shows that elevated GDF15 expression was associated with poor prognosis in EOC patients. We suggest that GDF15 is a novel biomarker for the early detection of EOC, prediction of the response to chemotherapy, and screening for recurrence in EOC patients.
