Background Aims Design Methods Results Conclusion Implication to Clinical Practice Reporting Method Physical frailty (PF) is highly prevalent and associated with undesirable outcomes in stroke survivors aged 65 years or older. However, the long‐term trajectories of PF are understudied in those older stroke survivors.To identify PF trajectories and relative predictors associated with the PF trajectories in older stroke survivors.This is a secondary analysis of a population‐based cohort study in the United States.Six hundred and sixty‐three older stroke survivors from the National Health and Ageing Trends Study from 2015 to 2021 were included. PF was operationally assessed based on the Fried Frailty Phenotype. Trajectories were identified by group‐based trajectory modelling. The associations between sociodemographic characteristics, clinical factors, symptoms, cognitive factors and PF trajectories were examined using the design‐based logistic regression method.Most older stroke survivors were 75 and older (63.32%), female (53.99%), white (80.54%) and partnered (50.64%). Two PF trajectory groups were identified (Group 1: low risk, robust; 49.47%; Group 2: high risk, deteriorating; 50.53%). Individuals were at a higher risk to be assigned to Group 2 if they were 75–84 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.16, 95% CI: 1.23–3.80) or 85+ years (aOR: 2.77, 95% CI: 1.52–5.04), had fair self‐reported health (aOR: 2.78, 95% CI: 1.53–5.07) or poor self‐reported health (aOR: 3.37, 95% CI: 1.51–7.52), had comorbidities (aOR: 8.44, 95% CI: 1.31–54.42), had breathing problems (aOR: 2.18, 95% CI: 1.18–4.02) and had balance problems (aOR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.06–2.73).PF trajectories in older stroke survivors were heterogeneous and were associated with age, self‐rated health status, comorbidities, breathing problems and balance problems.Early, routine, dynamic screening for stroke‐related physical frailty (PF) and relative predictors might be beneficial for identifying the most vulnerable individuals. Shellfish allergies constitute an important cause of food‐induced anaphylactic reactions, which pose challenges to food safety and human health worldwide. In the present study, the specific IgE (sIgE) binding characteristics of different shrimp proteins of black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) to the sera of eight shrimp‐allergic patients from China were studied by sodium dodecyl sulphate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS‐PAGE) and nanoliquid chromatography time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. According to the PLGS scores (>2000) and the sequence coverage (>40%), eight proteins with sIgE binding activity were identified, including myosin heavy chain type 1 (K4Q4N8), hemocyanin (G1AP69 and Q95V28), phosphopyruvate hydratase (O96656), arginine kinase (C7E3T4), tropomyosin (A1KYZ2), sarcoplasmic calcium binding protein (H7CHW2) and glyceraldehyde‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase (A0A097BQP2). Among these eight proteins, phosphopyruvate hydratase was a prevalent IgE‐binding protein among these Chinese patients with binding observed in 100% of sera. Moreover, 13 peptides were predicted as epitopes of phosphopyruvate hydratase. These new details help us to understand the crustacean IgE‐binding proteins especially Penaeus monodon IgE‐binding proteins, that would cause allergic reaction to Chinese patients. And our findings may provide essential information to improve allergy prevention and clinical treatment to shrimp allergy in China. Aims and objectives. To develop an explanatory framework to understand depression among community-dwelling Chinese older persons in Macau. Background. Depression has been described as the most common psychological problem among Chinese older persons. Dominant psychosocial theories are derived from research conducted mainly in western societies and similar research in Chinese populations is scant. Design. Mixed methods. Methods. Qualitative and quantitative methods (mixed methods) were employed to collect data from 31 participants between 2007-2009 in Macau. Results. Four categories of factors related to depression emerged: (1) negative thinking, (2) physical limitations and complaints, (3) present living conditions and social support and (4) past experiences. Each category interacts with the others and, consequently, one category both affects and is affected by others. The categories captured participants' life-long hardship and bio-psycho-social-cultural disability that lay at the root of their negative thinking. The consequences and impacts of their negative thinking appear to feed and sustain depression. Conclusion. The framework offers a deeper understanding of the nature and meaning of the experiences of depressed older persons in a Chinese context. Relevance to clinical practice. The findings have several implications for clinical practice. First, the cultural context of Chinese older persons should be emphasised in nursing practice. Second, the root of depression among Chinese older persons is seen to lie in their social, family, cultural and day to day living issues. Finally, this study illustrates the potential for incorporating psychosocial nursing interventions as a therapeutic approach on its own or as an adjunct to other therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim. To determine the prevalence of depression level of older men in Macau and identify factors that predict depression. Background. Studies have revealed the contribution of psychosocial factors such as stress, dissatisfaction at work and stressful life events to older men and the mental health burdens pose a grave threat to their quality of life. Design. A descriptive survey. Method. The study was conducted from July-August 2004 in six parishes in Macau; 839 older men aged 60+ completed a structured questionnaire. Outcome measures. Predisposing characteristics, social and daily activities, health history and need/behaviours and depression level were collected. Multiple logistic regression models were used to identify factors to predict older men who will have depression. Results. The prevalence rate of depression of older men was 8·6%. It showed that a history of stroke ( p = 0·039), insomnia ( p < 0·001), palpitations ( p = 0·014), poor social network ( p = 0·005) and self-perceived health status ( p = 0·001) and perceived low ability to meet living costs ( p < 0·001) were significant risk factors for depression. Conclusion. We should focus on older men by reducing their burden to meet living costs, improving their sleep quality and helping them to expand their social network. These should help in both prevention and recognition of the onset of depression. Those with the low social network scores could be targeted for more intensive support from the beginning. Relevance to clinical practice. It is important to screen regularly for depression status among older men in the community.
