Deciphering the function of all the genes in the human genome represents a major challenge in functional genomics for the twentyfirst century. The mouse is a key model organism in this endeavour. Programs are underway to generate mutations for every gene in the mouse genome. Determining the phenotype of each of these mouse mutants will be critical to the functional annotation of the mammalian genome and is dependent upon developments in the standardization and sophistication of phenotyping platforms as well as improvements in phenotype data tools.
