Abstract

Mr. Gonedes' paper attacks problems plaguing the accounting profession now as never before-the controversies over generally accepted accounting principles. Is there a "correct principle" for a given type of transaction? How can companies be compared when different principles are applied? Do accounting principles affect stock prices? The list is endless. Gonedes' test is one of many necessary to isolate the effects of alternative accounting principles and procedures. Gonedes sets out to test the null hypothesis that "the use or nonuse of each of the selected accounting procedures has no statistically significant effect on the measured surrogates of investors' perceived degrees of risk." Gonedes interprets the results of this test to disprove the null hypothesis. While intuitively I believe that accounting procedures do affect investors' perceived degrees of risk, and therefore, the null hypothesis is not true, Gonedes' tests do not conclusively disprove the null hypothesis. In fact, the results could be interpreted to prove the null hypothesis. It seems that, at best, the tests neither prove nor disprove the null hypothesis but do indicate a need for, and an approach to, further research. The remainder of my remarks are concerned with specific comments on various aspects of Gonedes' paper.
