The section outlines the research papers to be discussed at the 15th European Stroke Conference which will be held from May 16 to 19, 2006. Several symposium on the prevention and treatment of stroke are presented. Sessions on the recovery and rehabilitation of stroke patients, the risk factors of stroke and on diabetes will be conducted. A number of workshop and demonstration will be held.

The article presents information discussed at the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) Standards of Care Conference held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain from November 29 to December 1, 2007. Medical specialities included in the expertise of attendees involved the management of patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. The working groups focused on specific clinical experiences such as pathology, biochemistry and chemotherapy.

The Eastern Mediterranean Regions and Europe and Central Asia Regions are facing an epidemiological and nutrition transition, especially among vulnerable groups including mothers, children and adolescents. This has led to a double burden of malnutrition (DBM). Poor infant and young child feeding (IYCF), poor dietary diversity, excessive consumption of energy dense unhealthy foods, a growing obesogenic environment for children, including aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods for children, and reduced physical activity are among the main causes. In addition, several countries in the region lack the nutrition governance capacity to respond effectively to the DBM. This article reviews the context and provides a set of conclusions in which countries are called to reduce the marketing of unhealthy foods for children, enforce the fortification of staple foods with micronutrients to reduce micronutrient deficiencies and improve IYCF, including breastfeeding in the region. Up to 50% of the adult population fail to meet the recommended total water intake despite the adverse health outcomes associated with chronic low fluid intake. Total fluid intake plays an important role in the energy and nutrient intake of individuals. Dietitians' role is to advise and guide the population toward a healthier diet. However, based on existing evidence, dietitians' current knowledge and practices regarding healthy hydration is an area for improvement. The European Healthy Hydration Awareness Campaign (EuHHAC) is an initiative between the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) and the Hydration and Health Department of Danone Research, which aims to increase knowledge and awareness of healthy hydration and provide dietitians with evidence-based resources to use in practice. Since 2016, a series of tasks were undertaken by the EuHHAC group targeting dietitians across Europe. These tasks included an online survey addressing gaps in hydration knowledge, a webinar providing information on the terminology and impact of hydration on health, an interactive session addressing facilitators and barriers to healthy hydration, and a tutorial summarizing key hydration information and take-home messages. Dietitians were actively engaged in each aspect. Based on the feedback received, awareness of hydration was increased among dietitians. To further enhance understanding, an online Hydration Resource Center, including the resources of EuHHAC, will be created and uploaded on the EFAD website. Once completed an evaluation study will be undertaken to assess the usefulness of the resources in practice. The article presents abstracts of studies on nutrition which were presented at the 11th European Nutrition Conference in Madrid, Spain, on October 26-29, 2011, which include nutritional status and determining factors in adult-onset celiac disease, dietary fibre from cereals and fruits and vegetables in the stability of human colonic microbiota, and the effect of the biological properties of grapefruit flavonoids in rats.

The article presents guidelines formulated at the 2007 European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) Standards of Care Conference on the use of radiological examinations for neuroendocrine tumors. Factors that are importance in the choice of imaging methods include primary tumor detection, the evaluation of its local extent and therapy monitoring. Radiologic modalities such as computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography are described.

It highlights a consensus conference on the ENETS Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Neuroendocrine Gastrointestinal Tumors.

The article discusses the highlights of a 3-day symposium organized by the International Life Sciences Institute--European branch (ILSI Europe), in collaboration with Malta Standards Authority, University of Malta and ILSI Southeast Asia, in Portomaso, Malta on May 9-11, 2007. Issues regarding the future of functional foods in Europe were discussed at the symposium. Panelists concluded that the claims of the European Union (EU) regulation concerning functional foods represents a positive contribution to the development of functional foods in Europe.
