The article presents information discussed at the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) Standards of Care Conference held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain from November 29 to December 1, 2007. Medical specialities included in the expertise of attendees involved the management of patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. The working groups focused on specific clinical experiences such as pathology, biochemistry and chemotherapy.

Information on papers discussed at the 19th meeting of the European Stroke Conference (ESC) held on May 25-28, 2010 in Barcelona, Spain regarding stroke is presented. Topics include brain imaging, guidelines for warfarin therapy for atrial fibrillation treatment, and interventional treatments that recommends not to ablate patient right after a stroke. The meeting featured several scientists, physicians and members of the international stroke community including C. Iadecola, T. Liebeg, and P. L. Clatworthy.

Antibiotics are the cornerstone on which anti-infectious therapy is based. Their use has provoked the selection of resistant pathogens, which are progressively hindering treatment success. In addition, antibiotic pressure on the autochthonous microbiota alters the homeostasis of the composing communities, attenuate their beneficial effects and make difficult the treatment of endogenous infections. Therefore, it is convenient to design strategies that complement antibiotherapy, the utilization of probiotic microorganisms being among the most promising ones. Probiotics have demonstrated therapeutic effects on digestive (lactose intolerance, diarrheas of different etiologies, pouchitis), urogenital (vaginitis, vaginosis, uncomplicated cystitis) and mammary (mastitis) processes. Moreover, they reduce the frequency of recurrences due to their multiplication at the mucosal surfaces and present synergistic effects with antibiotics when rationally used. Their use should lead to diminishing antibiotic usage, to attenuation of the pressure in favour of resistant microorganisms and to their substitution by susceptible populations that, in general, present a higher fitness. The article presents abstracts of studies on nutrition which were presented at the 11th European Nutrition Conference in Madrid, Spain, on October 26-29, 2011, which include nutritional status and determining factors in adult-onset celiac disease, dietary fibre from cereals and fruits and vegetables in the stability of human colonic microbiota, and the effect of the biological properties of grapefruit flavonoids in rats.

The article discusses how the consensus guidelines issued by the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society for the treatment of rare metastases of digestive neuroendocrine tumors (NET) were established during a conference held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in November 2008. Three working groups composed of experts were formed to study diagnostic and treatment issues for peritoneal, bone and lung, brain and other rare metastases. Procedures on how the working groups arrived at the consensus guidelines were also discussed.

The article discusses the highlights of the International Expert Meeting (IEM) on Health Significance of Fat Quality of the Diet held in Barcelona, Spain from February 1 to 2, 2009. The dietary recommendations given during the event include saturated fat providing no more than 10% of the daily energy intake and essential polyunsaturated fats contributing 6 to 10% of the daily energy intake. Nutrition and health experts are advised to provide consistent evidence-based information supporting public health goals and become nutrition communicators.
