Introduction: Biomonitoring of bisphenol A (BPA) in human blood is still scarce, although already noticeable. We aimed to examine the associations between prenatal serum BPA concentrations and behavior and cognitive function in preschool children. Methods: A total of 1,782 mother-child pairs with complete demographic information, blood samples, and psychological measurements were included from the China-Anhui Birth Cohort (C-ABCS). We detected serum BPA concentrations and assessed children's neurodevelopment using a set of psychometric scales. Results: The median prenatal maternal serum BPA concentration was 0.23 (P25, P75: 0.07, 0.52) ng/mL, with a detection frequency of 85.19%. Compared with the girls with the lowest concentrations, those with highest BPA concentrations had increased risks of inhibitory self-control impairment [relative risk (RR) = 3.66, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.53, 7.58], emergent metacognition impairment (RR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.07, 2.78), conduct problem (RR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.12, 2.39), peer relationship problem (RR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.33, 4.47), higher total difficulties score (RR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.12, 2.67), and higher impact factor score (RR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.05), while the boys with the highest prenatal BPA concentrations had an increased risk of conduct problem compared with those with the lowest concentrations (RR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.24) (P-interaction = 0.011). After stratification by age, high prenatal BPA concentrations were associated with increased ADHD (RR = 4.44, 95% CI: 1.54, 10.85) among children aged 3 years, not among children aged 4 years. Conclusion: Our study revealed the sex-specific and age-specific impacts of prenatal BPA exposure on preschool children's cognitive and behavioral development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Previous studies have suggested that blood pressure variability (BPV) is associated with an increased risk of mortality and cardiovascular events in patients on dialysis. However, the results are inconsistent. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to analyze the association between BPV and outcomes in patients on dialysis. Methods: Articles in Embase, Medline, and Web of Science from the date of inception through January 1, 2020, were identified. The outcomes were all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and cardiovascular events. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale tool. Random effects models were used to pool the overall effect sizes. Two reviewers extracted the data independently. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were performed to explore potential heterogeneity. Results: Fifteen eligible studies were included, and all enrolled hemodialysis recipients only. The overall risk of bias for the included studies was low. A 1-SD increase in systolic BPV was associated with higher risks of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.18; 95% CI 1.11–1.26, I2 = 53.8%), cardiovascular mortality (HR = 1.23; 95% CI 1.10–1.37, I2 = 57.2%), and cardiovascular events (HR = 1.27; 95% CI 1.07–1.51, I2 = 69.3%). Likewise, a 1-SD increase in diastolic BPV was associated with higher HR for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality (HR = 1.14; 95% CI 1.05–1.23, I2 = 0.0%, and HR = 1.14; 95% CI 0.94–1.38, I2 = 0.0%, respectively). Conclusions: A greater BPV is associated with higher risks of cardiovascular and mortality outcomes in patients on hemodialysis. Further research is required to determine whether BPV may be useful either as a marker enabling individualized treatment of cardiovascular risk or as a treatment target in its own right. Background/Aims: Endothelial cells are crucial in vascular homeostasis. Dysfunction of endothelial cells is involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). High plasma homocysteine (Hcy) correlates with CVD while selenium supplementation counteracts development of CVD. However, the underlying mechanism remained unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of selenium on homocysteine-induced endothelial dysfunction. Methods: An animal model of Hcy-induced endothelial dysfunction was established by intragastric administration of L-methionine. Plasma NO and von Willebrand factor (vWF) were quantified using NO assay and ELISA kit respectively. Relaxation was measured in thoracic aortic ring assays. Cell viability and migration were detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 and Bio- Coat cell migration chambers respectively. Cellular apoptosis was determined by Annexin V-FITC apoptosis kit. Results: Selenium prevented homocysteine-induced endothelial injury and impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation. Selenium reversed the impaired viability and migration of endothelial cells induced by homocysteine in a dose-dependent manner. Selenium inhibited the apoptosis of endothelial cells induced by homocysteine, through downregulating of Caspase-3 activity and expression of Caspase-3 and Bax, and by stimulating Bcl-2 expression. Selenium reversed the homocysteine-induced reduction of NO release, and increased the expression and phosphoylation of endothelial nitric oxide synthetase (eNOS) in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, selenium enhanced AKT phosphorylation, and selenium-induced phosphorylation and expression of eNOS were inhibited by AKT inhibition. NO production, cell viability and migration rescued by selenium were inhibited, while cell apoptosis was reversed by AKT inhibition. Conclusion: Selenium protected against homocysteine-induced dysfunction and apoptosis of endothelial cells through AKT pathway.
