Cotton fabric samples were treated with a formulation of a total crude Trichoderma reesei cellulase in a two-step procedure. In the first step, samples were treated at a low liquor ratio by padding through the enzyme formulation at 21 degrees C and 55 degrees C with a wet pickup of 100% and batched for 12 h. The samples were then treated at a high liquor ratio (1:25) with an identical enzyme formulation at 55 degrees C, with intensive agitation. The pre-treatment influenced the overall weight loss and rate of hydrolysis in samples, and the protein concentration in the liquor of the second step. The overall weight loss was 25-28% (w/w) in the two-step procedure compared to a weight loss of 22% (w/w) in the one-step batch hydrolysis.

Solubilization of lignin and carbohydrates from the lignin-holocellulose structure of cotton seed-coat fragments was investigated by UV/VIS spectrometry. Xylanase (Pulpzyme HC) pre-treatment partially destroyed the lignocellulosic structure of the seed-coat fragments, producing reducing sugars and soluble lignin in the supernatant. Furthermore, the pre-treatment by enzyme enhanced the delignification in the subsequent alkaline scouring process and increased the lightness of the substrate.

The program COST Action 847 Textile Quality and Biotechnology (2000-2005) has given an excellent chance to review the possibilities of the research, aiming at development of the industrial application of enzymes for bast fibrous plant degumming and primary processing. The recent advancements in enzymatic processing of bast fibrous plants (flax, hemp, jute, ramie and alike plants) and related textiles are given. The performance of enzymes in degumming, modification of bast fibres, roving, yarn, related fabrics as well as enzymatic bonding of lignocellulosic composites is provided.

Although a non-sterile, undiluted carpet dye effluent (containing two anthraquinone dyes) did not support growth of Trametes versicolor, the pre-grown fungus removed 95% of its color in shake-flasks after 10 h of incubation. After decoloration, the COD of the cell-free supernatant increased and the toxicity was unchanged as determined by the Microtox assay using Vibrio fischeri. Decoloration rates decreased when either glucose alone or Mn2+ and glucose were added. T. versicolor, immobilized on jute twine in a rotating biological contacting reactor, also decolorized four successive batches of the effluent. There was no decoloration in any of the uninoculated, non-sterile controls.

Three reactive dyes were rapidly adsorbed by the mycelium pellets of Penicillium oxalicum. Dye removal of Reactive Blue 19 was up to 60% in 10 min and 91% in 80 min. Dye adsorption isotherms fitted Langmuir model well and the maximum adsorption capacities at 20 degrees C were calculated to be 160 mg g(-1) for Reactive Blue 19, 122 mg g(-1) for Reactive Red 241 and 137 mg g(-1) for Reactive Yellow 145, respectively. The pellets exhibited a high dye adsorption capacity (80-180 mg g(-1)) for all of the 3 dyes over a wide pH range (pH 2-10), and the maximum adsorption was obtained at pH 2. The adsorption capacity was mildly increased by increasing salinity.

Reactive Black 5 industrial dyeing effluent was decolourized by free and immobilized laccase. The stability of the enzyme (194 h free and 79 h immobilized) depended on the dyeing liquor composition and the chemical structure of the dye. In the decolourization experiments with immobilized laccase, two phenomenons were observed--decolourization due to adsorption on the support (79%) and dye degradation due to the enzyme action (4%). Dyeing in the enzymatically recycled effluent provided consistency of the colour with both bright and dark dyes.
