Two new chemosensors, rhodamine 6G derivative bearing hydroxyethyl group (1) and rhodamine base derivative bearing 15-crown-5 group (2) were synthesized and their sensing behaviors toward various metal ions were investigated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. Addition of ion to a solution of 1 and 2 gave visual color changes as well as fluorescent OFF-ON observations. Selectivity and sensitivity of 1 towards are excellent enough to detect micromolar level of ion, even in equeous media and biological sample (HeLa cell).

A great deal of effort has been made to develop devices and methods for detecting toxic heavy metals and their compounds. Traditionally, methods such as mass spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry have been used for the detection of these heavy metal ions. However, in spite of their superb sensitivity, the equipment used in these methods can be operated only by experts and requires pre-treatment steps taking more than 10 hours. A new BODIPY derivative bearing piperazine group was synthesized and its fluorescent changes towards metal ions as well as pH are studied. The title compound displayed a moderate selectivity for Hg 2+ among the metal ions examined.
