In the present work we study the communication between neurons of a region of the brain with the purpose to construct a mathematical and computationally feasible model that accurately describes how the information is transmitted between neuronal cells. We approached the behavior of neurons through the FiztHugh-Nagumo equations, constructing a discrete model consistent with the continuous model through the strategy of increasing the number of neurons within the considered neural network. Consequently we obtain numerical results characterized by models of differential equations that describe a distribution of an action potential through non-linear equations of the reaction-diffusion-convection type and a convergence study of the discrete model. A neurociência tem como objetivo entender os mecanismos que regulam o sistema nervoso, para combater os males existentes associados a funções cerebrais, ampliar o conhecimento no desenvolvimento cognitivo humano, etc. No presente trabalho estudamos a comunicação entre neurônios de uma mesma região do cérebro com o propósito na construção de um modelo matemático que descreva de forma acurada e exequível computacionalmente como as informações são transmitidas entre as células neuronais. Abordamos o comportamento dos neurônios através das equações de FiztHugh-Nagumo, construindo um modelo discreto consistente com o modelo contínuo através da estratégia de aumentar cada vez mais a quantidade de neurônios dentro da rede neural considerada. Consequentemente obtemos resultados numéricos caracterizados por modelos de equações diferenciais parciais que descrevem a distribuição de um potencial de ação através de equações não lineares do tipo reação-difusão-convecção e um estudo de convergência do modelo discreto.

In particular, the control is given by a finite linear combination of Dirac mass and the state is solution to the associated elliptic boundary value problem. The basic idea consists in minimizing a functional which measures the distance between the state and a target function, with respect to the number, intensities and locations of pointwise loads. The sensitivity of the cost functional with respect to a number of pointwise sources in the set of admissible solutions is derived in its explicit form with help of auxiliaries boundary value problems. The obtained result is then used to devise a non-iterative second order reconstruction algorithm, independent of any initial guess and without introducing regularization techniques. Finally, the devised reconstruction algorithm is applied for numerically solving a set of control and inverse reconstruction problems. Neste trabalho o problema de controle ótimo com respeito a um conjunto de fontes puntuais é estudado. Em particular, o controle é dado por uma combinação linear finita de massas de Dirac e o estado é solução de um problema de valor de contorno elíptico. Objetiva-se, portanto, minimizar um funcional, que mede a distância entre o estado e uma função alvo, com respeito ao número, intensidades e localizações das cargas puntuais. A sensibilidade do funcional de custo, em relação a um certo número de fontes puntuais no conjunto de soluções admissíveis, é analisada na sua forma explícita com o auxílio de problemas de valor de contorno auxiliares. O resultado obtido é então utilizado para conceber um algoritmo de reconstrução de segunda ordem não iterativo, independente de qualquer chute inicial e sem a introdução de técnicas de regularização. Finalmente, o algoritmo de reconstrução elaborado é aplicado para resolver numericamente um conjunto de problemas de controle e de problemas inversos de reconstrução de fontes.

We show that both models are well posed and we establish necessary and sufficient conditions to guarantee the exponential stability of their solutions. The analytical study of the properties is performed using the Theory of Semigroups. Finally, through numerical methods, we confirm these properties to the corresponding discrete model. We develop numerical modeling and we obtain graphs showing the behavior of the solution of hyperbolic-parabolic system. Neste trabalho estudamos o comportamento assintótico das soluções de problemas de valor inicial e de contorno de modelos unidimensionais de mistura de materiais termoelásticos, definidos por sistemas acoplados: hiperbólico-parabólico e hiperbólico-hiperbólico; os quais utilizam a hipótese Clássica de Fourier e a Teoria de Maxwell-Cattaneo na condução do calor, respectivamente. Mostraremos que ambos modelos são bem colocados e estabelecemos condições necessárias e suficientes que garantem a estabilidade exponencial das suas soluções. O estudo analítico das propriedades é realizado utilizando a Teoria de Semigrupos. Finalmente, através dos métodos numéricos confirmamos estas propriedades para o correspondente modelo discreto. Fazemos a modelagem numérica e obtemos gráficos que mostram o comportamento da solução do sistema hiperbólico-parabólico.

Our main result is to prove that the semigroup associated to this model is not exponentially stable. Moreover, we prove that the semigroup decays polynomially to zero. When the damping mechanism is e ective only on the boundary of the rotational angle, the solution also decays polynomially with rate depending on the coe cients of the problem. Estudamos a estabilização uniforme para uma classe de sistemas de Timoshenko com carga pontual na extremidade livre da viga. Nosso principal resultado é provar que o semigrupo associado com este modelo não é exponencialmente estável. Além disso, provamos que o semigrupo decai polinomialmente. Quando a dissipação é eficaz apenas sobre o limite do ângulo de rotação, a solução também decai polinomialmente com taxa de decaimento dependendo dos coeficientes do problema.

In order to deal with this severely ill-posed inverse problem, we rewrite it as an optimization problem where a Kohn-Vogelius-type functional measuring the misfit between the solutions of two auxiliary problems is minimized. One auxiliary problem contains information on the boundary measurement while the other one corresponds to the boundary excitation. The solutions of the auxiliary problems coincide once the inverse problem is solved. In order to minimize the Kohn-Vogelius criterion, its total variation with respect to a set of concentrated sources perturbations is explicitly evaluated. Then, a new method for solving the inverse potential problem based on the expression obtained is devised. Finally, some numerical results are presented in order to show the effectiveness of the devised reconstruction algorithm. O problema inverso do potencial consiste em reconstruir uma fonte desconhecida com suporte em um domínio geométrico a partir de uma única medição sobre a fronteira. Se o domínio de definição do problema inverso for limitado, a medição é total e, caso este domínio seja semi-infinito, a medição é parcial. No caso deste trabalho em particular, o termo fonte buscado é constituído de cargas pontuais e as informações utilizadas na reconstrução são os dados de Cauchy. Para tratar este problema mal posto, a estratégia aqui adotada consiste em reescrevê-lo como um problema de otimização, onde um funcional de forma baseado no critério de Kohn-Vogelius é minimizado. Este funcional mede a diferença entre as soluções de dois problemas auxiliares, onde um deles contém a informação relativa à leitura no contorno enquanto o outro é munido com a informação correspondente à excitação no contorno. As soluções dos problemas auxiliares coincidem quando se está sobre a solução do problema inverso. Para minimizar o critério de Kohn-Vogelius, sua sensibilidade com respeito a um conjunto de fontes concentradas é avaliada explicitamente. Com base na expressão obtida, constrói-se um novo método não iterativo para resolver o problema inverso do potencial em um único passo e sem a necessidade de qualquer regularização. Finalmente, alguns resultados numéricos são apresentados a fim de mostrar a efetividade do algoritmo de reconstrução proposto.

Este conceito relativamente novo tem sido utilizado com exito no tratamento de uma ampla gama de problemas. Neste trabalho, a derivada topologica e aplicada no contexto de otimizacao topologica de estruturas submetidas a pressao hidrostatica, levando em conta uma restricao de volume. Em particular, a expansao assintotica topologica da energia potencial total associada ao problema de elasticidade linear em estado plano de tensao ou deformacao, considerando como perturbacao topologica a nucleacao de uma inclusao circular com condicao de transmissao nao homogenea, e rigorosamente desenvolvida, o que representa a principal contribuicao deste trabalho. Fisicamente, tem-se uma pressao hidrostatica atuando sobre a interface da perturbacao topologica. O resultado obtido e entao utilizado para construir um algoritmo de otimizacao topologica baseado na derivada topologica associada, conjuntamente com o metodo de representacao do dominio por funcao level-set. In this work, we want to reconstruct a set of inclusions with a different thermal conductivity from the medium by subjecting the body through a thermal excitations and taking temperature measurements on the boundary. Since the inverse conductivity problem is overdetermined, the idea is to rewrite it in the form of an optimization problem. In particular, we minimize a shape functional based on the Kohn-Vogelius criterion that measures the misfit between two auxiliaries problems. One of them contains information on the boundary measurement while the other one contains information on the boundary excitation. Over the solution to the inverse problem, both solutions to the auxiliaries problems coincide. The Kohn-Vogelius criterion is then minimized by using the so-called topological derivative concept. This derivative measures the sensitivity of a given shape functional with respect to an infinitesimal singular domain perturbation. Next, the inverse problem is redefined in the context of Bayesian inference, that consists in codifying a previously known information from a priori probability distribution to be updated through the Bayes Theorem once a new information is introduced. In order to reduce the computational cost of sample numerical methods commonly used in this type of approach, the topological derivative is used as a probability indicator in the construction of the likelihood function to obtain a probability distribution of the set of inclusions, which leads to a probabilistic reconstruction algorithm based on the Bayesian topological derivative concept introduced in this work for the first time. Finally, some numerical experiments are presented. O problema inverso da condutividade consiste em determinar a distribuição de condutividade térmica de um corpo a partir de medidas tomadas na fronteira. Neste trabalho, objetiva-se reconstruir um conjunto de inclusões com coeficiente de condutividade térmica distinto do meio, submetendo o corpo a excitações térmicas e medindo a correspondente distribuição de temperatura sobre sua fronteira. Como o problema inverso da condutividade é sobredeterminado, a ideia é reescrevê-lo na forma de um problema de otimização. Em particular, objetiva-se minimizar um funcional de forma baseado no critério de Kohn-Vogelius, que mede a diferença entre as soluções de dois problemas auxiliares. Um deles contém informação sobre a leitura e outro sobre a excitação, ambos definidos na fronteira do corpo. Sobre a solução do problema inverso, ambas as soluções dos problemas auxiliares coincidem. O critério de Kohn-Vogelius é então minimizado utilizando o conceito de derivada topológica, que mede a sensibilidade de um dado funcional quando uma perturbação infinitesimal singular é introduzida em um ponto arbitrário do domínio. Em seguida, o problema inverso é redefinido no contexto de inferência bayesiana, que consiste em codificar informações previamente conhecidas a partir de uma distribuição de probabilidade a priori a ser atualizada através do teorema de Bayes, a cada nova informação introduzida. Com a finalidade de se reduzir o custo computacional de métodos numéricos de amostragem, comumente utilizados neste tipo de abordagem, a derivada topológica será utilizada como um indicador de probabilidade na construção da função de verossimilhança para se obter uma distribuição de probabilidade do conjunto de inclusões, o que conduz a um algoritmo de reconstrução probabilístico baseado no conceito de derivada topológica bayesiana, introduzido pela primeira vez nesse trabalho. Finalmente, são apresentados alguns experimentos numéricos.

According to the specialized literature, the topological derivative has been fully developed for a wide range of one single physical phenomenon modeled by partial differential equation. The purpose of the present work is to carry out the topological sensitivity analysis in a semi-coupled model. In particular, is considered the classical mechanical problem of elasticity with initial thermal stress. The linear elasticity problem is modeled by the Navier equation and it's coupled with the steady-state heat conduction problem (modeled by the Laplace equation). The mechanical coupling term comes out from the thermal stress induced by the temperature field. Since this term is non-local, is necessary to introduce a non-standard adjoint state, which allows to obtain a closed form for the topological derivative. Finally, is provided a full mathematical justification for the derived formulas and develop precise estimates for the remainders of the topological asymptotic expansion. A derivada topológica mede a sensibilidade de um funcional de forma quando uma perturbação singular infinitesimal é introduzida num ponto arbitrário do domínio de definição do problema. Na literatura especializada, a derivada topológica tem sido desenvolvida para uma grande variedade de fenômenos físicos modelados por somente uma equação diferencial parcial. O presente trabalho tem como propósito principal desenvolver a análise de sensibilidade topológica em um modelo semi-acoplado. Considera-se, em particular, o problema mecânico clássico de elasticidade com tensão inicial de origem térmica. O problema elástico, modelado pela equação de Navier, encontra-se acoplado a um problema de condução de calor estacionário (modelado pela equação de Laplace). O termo de acoplamento mecânico vem da tensão térmica induzida pelo campo de temperatura. Como este termo de acoplamento é não local, na análise de sensibilidade é necessário introduzir um estado adjunto não padrão que permite obter uma forma fechada para a derivada topológica. Finalmente, são fornecidas as justificativas matemáticas completas das fórmulas obtidas e estimativas precisas dos termos remanescentes da expansão assintótica topológica.

The topological derivative has been successfully applied in the treatment of a wide range of problems such as topology optimization, inverse analysis and image processing. In this work the topological derivative is applied in the context of topology optimization of structures under plane stress assumptions and subject to multiple load cases. In particular, the structural compliance is minimized under volume constraint imposed through the Augmented Lagrangian Method. Since we are dealing with multiple load cases, a multi-objective optimization problem is proposed and the topological sensitivity is obtained as a sum of the topological derivatives associated with each load case. The obtained result is used to devise a topology optimization algorithm based on the topological derivative together with a level-set domain representation method. Finally, several finite element-based examples of structural optimization are presented. A derivada topológica é um campo escalar que mede a sensibilidade de um dado funcional de forma quando o domínio de definição do problema sofre uma perturbação singular infinitesimal, como a inserção de furos, inclusões ou termos fontes. Este conceito tem sido reconhecido como uma poderosa ferramenta na obtenção da topologia ótima em diversos problemas da física e da engenharia; e vem sendo objeto de estudo em áreas de pesquisa como otimização topológica, processamento de imagens e problemas inversos. No presente trabalho, a derivada topológica é aplicada no contexto de otimização topológica de estruturas em estado plano de tensões, sujeitas a múltiplos casos de carregamento. Em particular,a complacência da estrutura é minimizada com restrição de volume imposta através do método do lagrangeano aumentado. Desde que lida-se com múltiplos casos de carregamento, é proposto um problema de otimização multiobjetivo e a sensibilidade é dada pela soma das derivadas topológicas para cada caso de carregamento. O resultado obtido é então utilizado como direção de descida da função custo em um algoritmo de otimização estrutural baseado na derivada topológica e na representação do domínio por função level-set. Finalmente, são apresentados alguns exemplos numéricos que permitem validar a metodologia proposta.

We make the mathematical modelling and well-posed model. We consider the discrete model and we make the computational modelling to the problem. The main result this work is to model the transverse contact problem and to show the qualitative properties of solution, for example, the exponential decay for energy of the system. We obtain numeric convergence rates to numeric solutions, and that enabled us to obtain numerical and computationally properties. Nesta tese estudamos o problema de contacto transversal de uma viga, de Timoshenko, com propriedades elástica e termoelástica, restrita ao seu movimento transversal, com condição de contacto do tipo Signorini. Fazemos a modelagem matemática do problema mostrando a boa colocação do modelo. Discretizamos o modelo e fazemos a modelagem computacional do problema. O ponto alto de nosso trabalho consiste em modelar o problema de contacto transversal e mostrar as propriedades qualitativas da solução como, por exemplo, o decaimento exponencial da energia. Obtemos taxa de convergência da solução numérica, com esse resultado, tornou-se possível obter as propriedades numéricas e computacionais.

As the speed of propagation of disturbances in these regions are di_erent, they form a discontinuity (Days and Pauluis, 2009). This phenomenon can be represented by a system of equations formed by the shallow water equations and the conservation equation of water vapor coupled by a nonlinear source term (Frierson et al., 2004). The aim of this study is to compare the consistency of results and performance of numerical simulation models that use ten di_erent numerical methods for solving these equations, including the finite di_erence methods: Leapfrog, Lax-Wendro_ and Leapfrog with _lters; the upwind method developed by Walcek (2000) and used in Freitas et al. (2011); and the finite volume methods: Godunov, Lax-Wendro_, Minmod, MC, Superbee and Bean-Warming. These models are tested with nonlinear conditions and, at the end, the results show that, albeit more complex and with a higher computational cost in identical simulations, the finite volume method is more appropriate to simulate such a phenomenon because it provides a more accurate solution when dealing with these discontinuities, thereby producing more realistic results than in the other cases. These results may have impact on the design of new models for the operational centers of weather and climate. A interação entre campos de fluxos de larga escala e campos de precipitação na atmosfera tropical pode apresentar fronteiras abruptas entre regiões secas e regiões úmidas (limitadas pela frente de precipitação). Como a velocidade de propagação de distúrbios nessas regiões é diferente, forma-se uma descontinuidade (Dias e Pauluis, 2009). Tal fenômeno pode ser representado por um sistema de equações formado pelas equações da água rasa e pela equação de conservação do vapor d'água acopladas por um termo fonte não linear (Frierson et al., 2004) . O objetivo do presente trabalho é comparar a consistência dos resultados e o desempenho de modelos de simulação numérica que utilizam dez métodos numéricos diferentes para resolver essas equações, dentre eles os métodos das diferenças finitas: Leapfrog, Lax-Wendroff e Leapfrog com filtros; Upwind desenvolvido por Walcek (2000) e utilizado em Freitas et al. (2011); e os métodos de volumes finitos: Godunov, Lax-Wendroff, Minmod, MC, Superbee e Bean-Warming. Estes modelos são testados com condições não lineares e, ao final, os resultados mostram que o método dos volumes finitos, mesmo sendo mais complexo e ter um custo computacional maior em simulações idênticas, é mais adequado para simular tal fenômeno pois fornece uma solução mais precisa ao lidar com as descontinuidades, gerando, assim, resultados mais realísticos que nos outros casos. Esses resultados podem ter impacto no desenho dos novos modelos para os centros operacionais de previsão de tempo e clima.

We realize an analytic study of these models and we show they are exponentially stable, if and only if, the velocities of wave propagations are equal. Such result is more interesting on the point of mathematical view whereas in the practice the velocities of wave propagations are never equal. We study in the general case the polynomial stability property and we show the dissipative systems are stable and, in these situations, the decay rate can be improved according to the regularity of the initial data. In the specific cases of the models of curved beams, the differential factor is in the mathematical techniques we use, which they are much more sophisticated. Finally we realize a numerical study of the dissipative models using semi-discrete and totally discrete models in finite differences, purposing to avoid the problem of shear locking and to we confirm the theoretical results developed here. Neste trabalho estudamos modelos de vigas planas governados pelas hipóteses de Timoshenko e modelos de vigas curvas governados pelas hipóteses de Bresse, na presença de mecanismos dissipativos atuando parcialmente, quer sobre a função de rotação na seção transversal ou sobre a função de deslocamento transversal. Desenvolvemos um estudo analítico desses modelos e mostramos que eles são exponencialmente estáveis se, e somente se, as velocidades de propagações de ondas são iguais. Este resultado é interessante do ponto de vista matemático, visto que na prática as velocidades de propagações de ondas nunca são iguais. No caso geral, estudamos a propriedade de estabilidade polinomial e mostramos que os sistemas dissipativos são polinomialmente estáveis, com taxas de decaimento que podem ser melhoradas de acordo com a regularidade dos dados iniciais. Nos casos específficos dos modelos de vigas curvas, o fator diferencial reside nas técnicas matemáticas que aplicamos, as quais são muito mais sofisticadas. Finalmente realizamos um estudo numérico dos modelos dissipativos usando modelos semidiscretos e totalmente discretos em diferenças finitas, com a preocupação de se evitar o problema de trancamento no cortante e para comprovarmos os resultados teóricos desenvolvidos nesta tese.

By making use of the Hill-Mandel Principle of Macro-Homogeneity and the concept of volume average, a variational formulation was established to derive a clearly structured axiomatic framework for constitutive multi-scale models of the present type, allowing the equilibrium equations at the micro-scale to be rigorously written through the clear identification of the functional spaces involved. This formulation lead to a structure that is particularly well-suited for the development of topological sensitivity analyses of constitutive multi-scale models of the present type. As a fundamental result of the topological sensitivity analyses carried out, tensorial fields were identified that represent the topological derivative of the macroscopic constitutive tensor when a singular perturbation is introduced at the micro-scale. The components of such tensorial fields depend on the solution of the canonical variational problems associated to the original unperturbed domain. It is worth emphasising that this result allows the topological asymptotic expansion of the macroscopic constitutive operator to be written explicitly which, in turn, makes it possible to get promptly the topological derivative for a vast class of shape functionals. In particular, in this thesis, two classical computational modeling problems are addressed within the proposed framework: stationary heat conduction and linear elasticity. Multi-scale constitutive models for both problems are firstly derived. Then, the corresponding topological derivatives are obtained by considering the micro-structure to suffer a singular perturbation characterised by the nucleation of a circular inclusion made of a material with physical properties different from those of the medium. Finally, several numerical experiments are performed which show some of the different possible manners of using the topological sensitivity tensor in the project/optimization of specialised micro-structures. These demonstrate the fundamental nature of the results obtained in this work for use in the computational modelling context. O presente trabalho tem como propósito principal desenvolver a análise de sensibilidade topológica em modelos constitutivos multi-escala. Neste sentido, utilizando o Princípio de Macro-Homogeneidade de Hill-Mandel e o conceito de média volumétrica, foi estabelecida uma formulação variacional para derivar uma elegante estrutura axiomática de modelos constitutivos multi-escala deste tipo, permitindo escrever as equações de equilíbrio na micro-escala de maneira rigorosa através de uma clara identificação dos espaços envolvidos. Com essa formulação, obteve-se uma estrutura adequada para o desenvolvimento da análise de sensibilidade topológica de modelos constitutivos multi-escala. De fato, como resultado fundamental dessa análise, foi identificado um campo tensorial que representa a derivada topológica do tensor constitutivo macroscópico quando é introduzida uma perturbação singular na micro-escala. As componentes do mencionado campo tensorial dependem apenas das soluções dos problemas variacionais canônicos associados ao domínio original não perturbado. Cabe mencionar que através desse resultado, é possível escrever de forma explícita a expansão assintótica topológica do operador constitutivo macroscópico, permitindo obter rapidamente a derivada topológica para uma vasta classe de funcionais de forma. Em particular, neste trabalho são tratados dois problemas clássicos da modelagem computacional: condução estacionária de calor e elasticidade linear. Assim, inicialmente é desenvolvida a modelagem constitutiva multi-escala de cada um dos problemas ora mencionados. Em seguida, considerando que a micro-estrutura sofre uma perturbação singular caracterizada pela nucleação de uma inclusão circular composta de material com propriedades físicas distintas do meio, são calculadas as respectivas derivadas topológicas. Finalmente, são realizados diversos experimentos numéricos mostrando algumas das diferentes maneiras possíveis de utilização do tensor de sensibilidade topológica no projeto e/ou otimização de micro-estruturas especializadas, o que demonstra o caráter fundamental dos resultados desenvolvidos neste trabalho para a modelagem computacional.
