The article presents a clinical trial to determine the efficacy of treating victims of intentional self-poisoning in developing countries with multiple-dose activated charcoal. Intentional self-poisoning has a tenfold higher mortality rate in developing countries due to the greater access to highly toxic pesticides and plants. The trials were conducted with patients at hospitals in Sri Lanka. The mortality rate among patients treated with charcoal did not improve. The authors cite the urgent need for an effective and affordable means of treatment.
