Objective: To assess the evidence of a relationship between muscle MRI and disease severity in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)., Methods: We conducted a systematic review of studies that analyzed correlations between MRI measurements and motor function in patients with DMD. PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched using relevant keywords and inclusion/exclusion criteria (January 1, 1990-January 31, 2019). We evaluated article quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute scale. Information regarding the samples included, muscles evaluated, MRI protocols and motor function tests used was collected from each article. Correlations between MRI measurements and motor function were reported exhaustively., Results: Seventeen of 1,629 studies identified were included. Most patients included were ambulant with a mean age of 8.9 years. Most studies evaluated lower limb muscles. Moderate to excellent correlations were found between MRI measurements and motor function. The strongest correlations were found for quantitative MRI measurements such as fat fraction or mean T2. Correlations were stronger for lower leg muscles such as soleus. One longitudinal study reported that changes in soleus mean T2 were highly correlated with changes in motor function., Conclusion: The findings of this systematic review showed that MRI measurements can be used as biomarkers of disease severity in ambulant patients with DMD. Guidelines are proposed to help clinicians choose the most appropriate MRI measurements and muscles to evaluate. Objective: The aim was to determine if dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) can discriminate ferromagnetic bullets from nonferromagnetic ones., Methods: The ferromagnetic properties of 29 bullets were determined. All bullets underwent a DECT evaluation, and a manual measurement of the dual-energy index was performed by 2 radiologists, followed by a fully automatic measurement, in 3 different positions in a phantom (air, water, and bone)., Results: Twenty-one bullets were found to be nonferromagnetic. There were significant differences between the mean of the dual-energy index measured in the core of ferromagnetic projectiles and those of nonferromagnetic ones in the lung position of the phantom (P = 0.007). Specificity was 86.36%, and negative predictive value was 90.48%. Among the 29 bullets, 24 were correctly classified., Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that DECT can assess the ferromagnetic status of bullets and their magnetic resonance imaging compatibility using an extended computed tomography scale in an ex vivo phantom model.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is strongly associated with age, and epidemiologic studies are needed to evaluate the impact of both aging of the population and the use of anticoagulant therapy in patients with AF on the incidence of cardioembolic stroke with AF (CE/AF stroke)., Methods: We evaluated trends in incidence rates, risk factors, prestroke therapy, and survival in CE/AF stroke from a prospective population-based registry, from 1985 to 2006., Results: A total of 3,064 ischemic strokes, including 572 (18.7%) CE/AF strokes, were recorded. Over the 22 years, a decrease in the incidence of overall CE/AF stroke was noted (incidence rate ratio 0.9858, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.9731-0.9986; p = 0.03). We observed a higher prevalence of previous AF, previous myocardial infarction, and patients aged >70 years in CE/AF stroke (p < 0.0001) whereas hypercholesterolemia was more prevalent in other ischemic strokes (p = 0.003). A significant increase in the use of anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents was noted, and was particularly pronounced for CE/AF stroke with previous AF. For CE/AF stroke, survival rates were 72% at 1 month (95% CI 0.68-0.76), 52% at 1 year (95% CI 0.48-0.56), and 43% at 2 years (95% CI 0.39-0.48), and remained lower than those of other ischemic stroke., Conclusions: The decrease in the incidence of cardioembolic/atrial fibrillation stroke in our study was probably due to a slight increase in the utilization of antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation, but the use of such therapies will have to increase further because of the expected aging of the population in coming years.

Rationale and Objectives: Aortic compliance is defined as the relative change in aortic cross-sectional area divided by the change in arterial pressure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful imaging modality for the noninvasive evaluation of aortic compliance. However, manual tracing of the aortic contour is subject to important interobserver variations. To estimate the aortic compliance from cine-MRI, a method based on fuzzy logic theory was elaborated., Materials and Methods: Seven healthy volunteers and eight patients with Marfan syndrome were examined using an ECG gated cine-MRI sequence. The aorta was imaged in the transverse plane at the level of the pulmonary trunk. A method based on fuzzy logic was developed to automatically detect the aortic contour., Results: Through our robust automatic contouring method, the calculation of aortic cross-sectional areas allows an estimation of the aortic compliance., Conclusion: The aortic compliance can be obtained from a fuzzy logic based automatic contouring method, thereby avoiding the important interobserver variation often associated with manual tracing.
