This conceptual article describes a model for the development of clinical instructors/faculty, called Clinical Scholars that addresses the needs in times of shortage and economic limitations. The authors present a solution for one of the bottlenecks to the nursing workforce pipeline, which may be further replicated. The model was conceptualized to address not only the quantity of available clinical instructors but also the quality of the preparation of these instructors. As faculty members in the Clinical Scholar course, the authors describe the model as applicable to teaching in the perinatal clinical setting. Included is a brief review of the literature providing a foundation for the model, the curriculum, and the strategies utilized in the 40-hour didactic course. An example of the successful utilization of the model for perinatal nursing is included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A model for coaching in nursing is described. Criteria for selecting a coach are discussed. Competencies for a coach are recommended. In addition, guidelines for caching sessions are provided as well as an example of an action plan outline to help the coachee identify areas of desired growth and options for developing these areas. As mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects hundreds of thousands of children and their families each year, investigation of potential mTBI assessments and treatments is an important research target. Three-dimensional multiple object tracking (3D-MOT), where an individual must allocate attention to moving objects within 3D space, is one potentially promising assessment and treatment tool. To date, no research has looked at 3D-MOT in a pediatric mTBI population. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine 3D-MOT learning in children and youth with and without mTBI. Thirty-four participants (mean age=14.69±2.46 years), with and without mTBI, underwent six visits of 3D-MOT. A two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a significant time effect, a nonsignificant group effect, and a nonsignificant group-by-time interaction on absolute speed thresholds. In contrast, significant group and time effects and a significant group-by-time interaction on normalized speed thresholds were found. Individuals with mTBI showed smaller training gains at visit 2 than healthy controls, but the groups did not differ on the remaining visits. Although youth can significantly improve their 3D-MOT performance following mTBI, similar to noninjured individuals, they show slower speed of processing in the first few training sessions. This preliminary work suggests that using a 3D-MOT paradigm to train visual perception after mTBI may be beneficial for both stimulating recovery and informing return to activity decisions.

The 2016 International Nursing Administration Research Conference, Leading in a Healthcare Vortex, was held in Orlando, Florida. The program drew 116 attendees with representation from Canada and Brazil. Participants from practice, education, and research discussed leadership in our turbulent healthcare climate, which are highlighted in this column. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Dr Heather S. Laschinger in recognition of her distinguished research legacy of empowering nursing work environments and mentorship of prominent nursing administration researchers.

Estimating the future nursing workforce needs is critical to all aspects of nursing care. Currently, the healthcare system is undergoing chaotic change, and predicting the workforce needs over the next 10 years has been challenging. The efforts of Dr Peter Buerhaus and his associates in addressing nursing workforce issues over the last 25 years are a hallmark. Dr Buerhaus joined forces with the state nursing workforce centers to discuss new approaches to this critical issue.

The 2014 International Nursing Administration Research Conference, "Pioneering Through Chaos: Leadership for a Changing World," was held at the Texas Woman's University in Dallas, Texas, in the fall of 2014. The program drew more than 100 attendees from 4 countries. The conference informed attendees from both academe and practice about the role of nursing administration in navigating the dynamic healthcare climate. This article will report on the insights from the conference presenters.

Lymphedema, pain, and range of motion restrictions after breast cancer remain underexplored, and few interventions have been developed for these women. Together with a yoga instructor, our interdisciplinary research team developed a yoga program for women with lymphedema after breast cancer (n = 13). Qualitative interviews and participants' journals show that there were a number of benefits to the yoga program. Themes outlining these are (1) understanding arm morbidity; (2) becoming aware of posture; and (3) countering fatigue. More surprisingly, perhaps, the participants also described the ways in which yoga furthered their understandings of loss associated with disability, the fourth theme, and showed that yoga enhanced their experiences of embodiment, the final theme. Finally, we assert that our research demonstrates the potential for qualitative research connected to the evaluation of interventions and that it demonstrates the blurring of traditional boundaries between interventions and data collection.

The nursing work force shortage is having a major impact on an industry that is already reeling from major assaults driven by inadequate payment and reimbursement. This article evaluates the current work force shortage as it relates to the competitive marketplace, the data regarding the shortages, the work environment, and the intergenerational issues that sabotage teams. There are recommendations for action in the areas of recruitment and retention, training and education, leadership and management, and improving the work environment.

This article reports three studies that investigated psychometric properties of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). The PAQ-C is a guided self-administered 7-day recall measure designed to assess general physical activity levels during the school year for children in grades four and higher. Study one, with 215 students ranging in age from 9 to 15 yr, found the PAQ-C had acceptable item and test score characteristics such as item distribution, corrected item-total correlations, and internal consistency. Study two, involving 84 students ranging from 9 to 14 yr, indicated acceptable levels of test-retest reliability for both males (r = 0.75) and females (r = 0.82) after 1 wk. The third study used Generalizability theory to investigate the reliability for using the average of either two or three PAQ-C scores collected during fall, winter, and spring seasons. Based on the responses of 200 students ranging from 8 to 16 yr, generalizability coefficients exceeded 0.80 for either the average of two or three responses for both younger (<13 yr) and older subjects. In all three studies, the PAQ-C demonstrated acceptable internal consistency and males were significantly more active than females. These results provide preliminary support for the PAQ-C as a cost efficient method of assessing general levels of children's physical activity during the school year.

A unique approach in utilization of nursing personnel was instituted at the University of Colorado Medical Center to alleviate the following patient care problems: 1) lack of continuity of care of obstetric patients, 2) inadequate prenatal instruction, and 3) the unpredictability of patient census in the labor and delivery area. Half the nurses from the labor and delivery area were organized into four teams of two nurses each who acquired a case load of patients for antepartum care. When a patient was admitted to the hostpial in labor, the nurse from her team who was on call came in and provided all nursing care during the intrapartum period. The problems and benefits of this new approach to nursing care are discussed.
