Objective: to evaluate the bond strength of repairs to composite resin restorations treated with CO 2 laser and bifunctional monomers after 1 year of aging. Background: Adequate bond strength between a composite restoration and resin repair agent can be achieved through mechanical and/or chemical treatment. However, the longevity of such repairs is unknown. Methods: Resin blocks (volume: 125 mm 3 ) were created. Failure surfaces were either not treated or were treated before the repair with a universal adhesive, a silane bonding agent and/or CO 2 laser. The blocks were distributed into six groups ( n  = 6 per group): resin+resin group (RRG), universal adhesive+resin group (ARG), silane+universal adhesive group (SAG), laser+silane+universal adhesive group (LSAG), laser+universal adhesive group (LAG), and laser+silane group (LSG). After treatment, repairs were made with another resin composite. "Sticks" (1.0 mm 2 in area and 1.0 cm in length) were cut from the specimens in each group and immersed in distilled water at 37°C. Microtensile bond strength was evaluated after 1 year of aging. Bond strength values were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's test. Results: Bond strength was significantly higher in the LSAG compared with the RRG, adhesive system, LSG, whereas statistically similar results were found for the SAG, LSAG, and LAG. Bond strength was lowest in the RRG. The LSAG and LAG presented predominantly cohesive fractures. Conclusions: The bond strength of composite resin repairs was satisfactory over time. Treatment with CO 2 laser contributed to the maintenance of bond strength during the 1-year storage period and bifunctional monomers present in the universal adhesive on the irradiated repair surface were of fundamental importance to the maintenance of bond strength values, as demonstrated by microtensile bond test and fracture pattern analysis.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to use the CIELab system to evaluate the performance of the whitening treatment involving violet light-emitting diode (LED) combined with a home 10% and 22% carbamide peroxide dental bleaching technique on dental enamel. Methods: Fifty blocks of bovine dental enamel were divided into five groups: control group (control), receiving only LED irradiation; Whitening 10%, receiving 10% carbamide peroxide treatment; Whitening 10%+VL, receiving 10% carbamide peroxide treatment combined with LED irradiation; Whitening 22%, receiving 22% carbamide peroxide treatment; and Whitening 22%+VL, receiving 22% carbamide peroxide treatment combined with violet LED irradiation. Color tests were performed before the protocols, after 1 week and after 2 weeks of treatment by using a spectrophotometer and the CIELab parameters: L*, (a*) and (b*). The Whitening 10%, Whitening 10%+VL, Whitening 22% and Whitening 22%+VL groups were submitted to 10% and 22% carbamide peroxide 8 h per day for 14 days, whereas the Control was only stored in artificial saliva. For irradiation in the Control, Whitening 10%+VL, and Whitening 22%+VL groups, we used violet LED at a wavelength of 405-410 nm activated for 60 permanent seconds and 30 sec of pause once per week. As all data exhibited normal distribution, the comparisons were performed by using two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. A post hoc t -test was employed, followed by the Ryan-Holm stepdown Bonferroni procedure. Results: After 1 week, the Whitening 22%+VL group differed significantly from all other groups in relation to hue, while no difference was found between the remaining groups ( p  < 0.05). Analyzing lightness, the Whitening 22%+VL and Whiteness10%+VL groups differed from the other groups ( p  > 0.05). In the 2nd week, the Whitening 22%+VL groups differed significantly from all other groups ( p  < 0.05) in hue, chroma, and lightness. The comparative analysis of bleaching times within the same group revealed significant differences in the Whitening 22%+VL group between baseline and week 1, baseline and week 2, as well as weeks 1 and 2 in terms of hue ( p  > 0.05). In the Whitening 22%+VL group, significant differences ( p  < 0.05) were found between baseline and week 2 as well as between weeks 1 and 2 in chroma ( p  > 0.05). In the Whitening 22%+VL group, statistically significant differences ( p  < 0.05) were found between baseline and week 1, baseline and week 2, as well as between weeks 1 and 2 in lightness. In the Whitening 10%+VL group, statistically significant differences ( p  < 0.05) were found between baseline and week 1, between baseline and week 2, as well as between weeks 1 and 2 in lightness. Conclusions: Tooth whitening treatment involving 10% and 22% carbamide peroxide combined with violet light promoted changes in the three axes of color (ΔH, ΔC, and ΔL) of the specimens evaluated. The use of the gel bleach alone was more efficient when the higher concentration was used. When violet light was combined with the gel, the lower concentration was more efficient.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the microhardness of demineralized enamel following different treatments (fluoride varnish, Er:YAG laser, and Er:YAG laser associated with fluoride varnish). Methods: Forty-eight enamel blocks (4 × 4 × 7 mm) were divided into six groups ( n  = 8): (S) Sound; (DE) Demineralized; (DED) DE + Duraphat ® 5% (fluoride varnish); (DEL20) DE + Er:YAG laser (20 mJ pulse mode; 0.20 W; 10 Hz; 60 sec; 1.18 J/cm 2 ; 11.83 W/cm 2 ); (DEL50) DE + Er:YAG laser (50 mJ pulse mode; 0.50 W; 10 Hz; 60 sec; 2.95 J/cm 2 ; 29.58 W/cm 2 ); (DEL20D) DE + Er:YAG laser (20 mJ) + Duraphat 5%. The irradiation was performed at 1 mm distance from the surface using a tip (AS7066X, L-14 mm, D-1.3 mm in diameter) in water/air spray refrigeration (level 6). The enamel blocks were submitted to pH cycling (4 h into DES solution +20 h into RE solution for 8 days and the solutions were changed every day). Knoop microhardness was measured (50 g/15 sec, six readings per sample) and data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test at 5% significance. Results: After treatments, DF group showed higher microhardness values than all the groups. Also, DEL20D group showed similar results with H group according to the microhardness analysis ( p  < 0.05). Conclusions: It could be concluded that Duraphat 5% treatment showed better results when compared with all tested groups, however, the association of Er:YAG Laser 20 with Duraphat 5% also showed promising results.

Background: Pain during labor can be a barrier when choosing vaginal delivery. In an attempt to relief pain during labor, several pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods are proposed. Objective: To assess the effect of light-emitting diode (LED) photobiomodulation on analgesia during labor. Methods: A clinical trial was conducted with 29 women who were divided into two groups: G1 (experimental group-LED) and G2 (control group-hot shower). In the experimental group, an LED plate with red and infrared merged [red 660 ± 20 nm, 5 mW/cm 2 , 3 J per LED (108 J) and infrared 850 ± 20 nm, 5 mW/cm 2 , 3 J per LED (108 J), total energy = 216 J] was placed on the subjects' dorsal region, at the level of T10 to S4, for 10 min, with the plate automatically turning off. Hot shower at controlled temperature was offered for 30 min. To verify the effect of LED on analgesia during labor, the following variables were assessed: (1) perception of pain, (2) fetal well-being assessed by cardiotocography or intermittent auscultation of fetal heart rate, (3) Apgar score at minutes 1 and 5 after birth, and (4) labor duration. Results: There was a statistically significant difference ( p  < 0.05) in pain reduction evidenced by a millimetric visual scale, before and after application on G1-LED (7.92 ± 1.78). Regarding the other variables, there was no statistical difference between the groups when comparing fetal well-being, Apgar score and labor duration. Conclusions: It is concluded that LED can be considered an alternative, since it caused pain reduction without changing other parameters during labor, compared with hot shower, a method included in hospital protocols, proving to be safe. Background: Orofacial pain has been a prevalent symptom in the worldwide population, which may cause restrictions in daily activities and, consequently, have a great impact on the well-being of affected individuals. Photobiomodulation using light sources, such as low-level laser or light emitting diodes, with different wavelengths, has been widely used in the last years, in addition to being a noninvasive, low-cost resource and reducing pain. Objective: This study aimed at evaluating the effect of photobiomodulation as a protocol treatment to prevent facial muscle discomfort after long-term clinical procedures. Methods: The volunteers were randomized and allocated as follows: laser ( n  = 16) and placebo ( n  = 16) groups, following a crossover study design. The laser parameters were as following: 786 nm wavelength, 9 J per point, and 100 mW power of 2.393 W/cm 2 irradiance. The discomfort was induced by simulating a 50-min dental procedure (with bilateral mouth open), and the pain scale (assessed bilaterally), tiredness, and temperature measurement through thermography were used for analysis. Results: The results showed a significant lower pain and tiredness in the laser group. Also, the results showed a statistically significant valid temperature change between the groups at times: T1, T40, and T50. Conclusions: According to our results, photobiomodulation showed a positive effect on the face musculature in patients submitted to the treatments, reducing pain and improving the subjective perception of exertion.

Background: The diagnosis of sleep bruxism (SB) in children is difficult due to the lack of a polysomnographic protocol for this population. Moreover, the gold standard treatment [occlusal splint (OS) therapy] has limitations, as adequate use depends on the child's cooperation. The etiology of SB may include stress factors. Salivary cortisol is a biomarker used as a noninvasive method to evaluate the response to stress. Besides physiological aspects, it is also important to investigate morphological aspects, such as masticatory muscle strength. The aim of the present study was to determine the occurrence of bite marks on the buccal mucosa in children as a complementary sign for the diagnosis of SB and investigate and the effectiveness of photobiomodulation as an alternative treatment for this condition. Methods: Seventy-six children 6-12 years of age were divided into four groups: G1-with SB and submitted to laser therapy over acupuncture points (λ = 786.94 nm, 20 sec per point, fluency = 33.5 Jcm 2 , energy = 1 J, number of points = 12); G2-with SB, use of OS, G3-with SB and submitted to sham laser therapy; and G4-control group without SB. Clinical signs (bite marks on buccal mucosa and headaches), bite force (BF), and salivary cortisol (biomarker of stress) were evaluated before and after treatment. Statistical analysis involved the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests. Results: Bite marks on the buccal mucosa were significantly associated with SB ( p  < 0.001). A statistically significant difference was found between the frequency of children with headache before and after treatment in G1 ( p  = 0.0005) and G2 ( p  = 0.0001), with no significant differences between the two groups (G1 and G2). The children in G1 had lower BF on both sides compared to the other groups. In the intragroup analysis after treatment, all groups exhibited an increase in salivary cortisol levels. Conclusions: Bite marks on the buccal mucosa can be used as a complementary sign for the clinical diagnosis of SB. Children with SB responded well to photobiomodulation therapy, as evidenced by the reduction in BF and reports of headache.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) on cell viability, synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), and interleukin (IL)-6 inflammatory cytokine production in myoblasts cultured in the presence of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). Methods: C2C12 myoblasts were treated with LPS and PBM using different parameters (wavelength: 780 nm; beam spot: 0.04 cm 2 ; power output: 10 or 40 mW; energy density: 5 or 20 J/cm 2 ; and 20-sec exposure time). Nonirradiated cells were used to the control group. Results: An increase in cell viability was found in both LPS groups in comparison with the control. PBM with the higher power output (40 mW) induced a reduction in cell viability. PBM also modulated the synthesis of NO in the myoblasts, but did not alter the expression of IL-6. Conclusions: Based on these findings, PBM is capable of modulating the cell viability and the production of NO in LPS-treated myoblasts and it is, therefore, a possible tool for the treatment of muscle injury caused by infection.

Objective: Evaluate the bond strength of repairs made on composite resin following the treatment of the surface of the flaw with different bonding agents and/or CO 2 laser. Background: The influence of CO 2 laser and its interaction with other bonding agents on the surface of the flaw is not yet known. In this study, CO 2 laser was chosen to treat the surface of the flaw due to its capacity to promote irregularities on the surface that enhance mechanical micro-retention. Methods: A block was created with Vitra APS nanohybrid composite resin (color: A3; FGM, Joinville, Brazil) measuring 5 mm in width, length, and depth (volume: 125 mm 3 ). The surface of the flaw was treated before the repair with an adhesive, silane bonding agent, and/or CO 2 laser. Six specimens were created in composite resin for each group (total: n  = 36): G1: resin+resin; G2: adhesive+resin; G3: laser+adhesive; G4: laser+silane+adhesive; G5: silane+adhesive; G6: laser+silane. After the repair, the surfaces of the fracture of all specimens, which were submitted to the microtraction test, were analyzed under an optical microscope. Bond strength values obtained according to the type of surface treatment were tabulated and submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test. Dunn's test was used to compare means. Results: G3 and G4 had significantly higher bond strength values compared to all other groups tested. Adhesive fractures predominated in all groups. However, G3 and G4 had a higher percentage of cohesive fractures compared to the other groups. Conclusions: The application of CO 2 laser as a surface treatment led to greater bond strength of composite resin repairs in comparison with the groups that only received treatment with a burr and silanization. The groups submitted to CO 2 laser also had a significantly lower number of adhesive failures when submitted to the microtraction test.

Objective: This is a randomized, sham-controlled, blind clinical trial that aimed to evaluate the effect of phototherapy on bite force, mandibular range of motion, sensitivity to palpation, and fatigue in the masseter and anterior temporal muscles of young patients when administered before the induction of fatigue., Materials and Methods: Fifty-two healthy volunteers aged 18-23 years were randomly allocated to a laser group and sham group. Both groups were submitted to a clinical evaluation to record mandibular range of motion, bite force, muscle sensitivity to palpation, and muscle fatigue. The laser group was then submitted to phototherapy (780 nm, 25 J/cm 2 , 50 mW, 20 sec, and 1 J per point) on three points of the masseter and one point of the anterior temporal muscle on each side. The sham group was submitted to the same procedure, but with the device switched off. The volunteers were then instructed to chew two pieces of gum (one on each side) for 6 min, with the pace set by a metronome calibrated to 80 bpm, followed by the reevaluation of all variables. The results were submitted to t-test and Wilcoxon test. A significance level of 5% (p < 0.05) was considered in all analyses., Results: No statistically significant intergroup or intragroup differences were found for the variables analyzed., Conclusions: With the proposed protocol, phototherapy administered before the induction of fatigue did not lead to any changes in bite force and mandibular range of motion, indicating that further studies are needed with different phototherapy dosimetric parameters.

Background: The photobiomodulation using the low-level laser therapy (LLLT) exerts a positive modulating effect on the synthesis of collagen in skeletal muscles and tendons. However, few studies have addressed this effect during the compensatory overload., Objective: Evaluate the effect of infrared laser on the deposition and organization of collagen fibers in muscle and tendon tissue during compensatory overload of the plantar muscle in rats., Materials and Methods: Wistar rats were submitted to bilateral ablation of the synergist muscles of the hind paws and divided in groups: Control, Hypertrophy, and Hypertrophy (H)+LLLT (780 nm, 40 mW, 9.6 J/cm 2 and 10 s/point, 8 points, total energy 3.2 J, daily), evaluated at 7 and 14 days. Muscle cuts were stained with Picrosirius-Red and hematoxylin-eosin and tendon cuts were submitted to birefringence for determination of collagen distribution and organization., Results: After 7 days an increase was observed in the area between beam muscles in H+LLLT (25.45% ± 2.56) in comparison to H (20.3% ± 3.31), in mature fibers and fibrilis in H+LLLT (29346.88 μm 2  ± 2182.56; 47602.8 μm 2  ± 2201.86 respectively) in comparison to H (26656.5 μm 2  ± 1880.46; 45630.34 μm 2  ± 2805.82 respectively) and in the collagen area in H+LLLT (2.25% ± 0.19) in comparison to H (2.0% ± 0.15). However, after 14 days a reduction was observed in the area between beam muscles in H+LLLT (13.88% ± 2.54) in comparison to H (19.1% ± 2.61), in fibrils and mature fibers in H+LLLT (17174.1 μm 2  ± 2563.82; 32634.04 μm 2  ± 1689.38 respectively) in comparison to H (55249.86 μm 2  ± 1992.65; 44318.36 μm 2  ± 1759.57) and in the collagen area in H+LLLT (1.76% ± 0.16) in comparison to H (2.09 ± 0.27). A greater organization of collagen fibers in the tendon was observed after 7 and 14 days in H+LLLT groups., Conclusions: Infrared laser irradiation induces an improvement in collagen organization in tendons and a reduction in the total area of collagen in muscles during compensatory atrophy following the ablation of synergist muscles.

Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the degradation of type I collagen fibers after treatment with a papain-based gel associated with a blue dye (PapaMBlue™) for use in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy., Materials and Methods: For such, 60 bioabsorbable membrane sponge discs were used. Group 1 was the negative control group. In groups 2, 3, and 4, the papain-based gel PapaMBlue gel was applied all over the samples for 4 min and irradiated using red laser (660 ± 10 nm) with 15, 30, and 40 J/cm 2 , respectively. In group 5, the papain-based gel was applied all over the samples for 4 min. In group 6, the photosensitizing dye was applied all over the samples for 4 min. The compositional analysis of the samples was performed using ATR-FTIR (attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy). The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05)., Results: Neither classic Papacarie™ nor the modified product with a photosensitizing agent (PapaMBlue) promoted collagen degradation., Conclusions: The irradiation of methylene blue added to papain gel with red light did not alter the chemical structure of type I collagen.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of phototherapy on bite force, facial swelling, mandibular movements, and pain in patients having undergone surgical treatment for mandibular fractures., Background: These are among the predominant types of facial fractures, and treatment involving surgical fixation with titanium plates is one of the most common procedures in oral-maxillofacial surgery. Phototherapy has been used to accelerate the muscle healing process and significantly improves muscle regeneration by inducing the formation of new muscle fibers., Methods: The patients were divided into two groups: Group 1-active phototherapy, and Group 2-sham phototherapy. Both groups underwent the surgical procedure by the same surgeon using the same surgical technique. Dosimetric parameters are wavelength, 660 nm; power, 108 mW; radiant energy, 21.6 J; fluency, 21.6 J/cm 2 ; radiance, 38197 mW/cm 2 ; exposure time, 200 sec per point, 10 points bilaterally. Photobiomodulation was performed in 15 sessions., Results: The primary variable was bite force measured with a gnathodynamometer and the secondary variables were facial swelling, mandibular movements (measured with digital calipers), and pain. The Student's t-test was used to determine intergroup differences., Conclusions: The findings suggest improvements in the laser group in comparison with the sham group with regard to mandibular dynamics, a reduction in postoperative facial swelling, a reduction in pain, and an increase in bite force.

Objective: Photobiomodulation (PBM) can modulate the proliferation of some types of stem cells. However, few reports have addressed the effects of PBM delivered by light-emitting diode (LED) on stem cells obtained from the pulp tissue of deciduous teeth. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of PBM delivered by red LED (630 nm, 75 mW, 37 mW/cm 2 ) with different radiant exposures on the cell cycle, mitochondrial membrane potential, and senescence of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED)., Materials and Methods: Cultures were irradiated with LED (2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 J/cm 2 ). After 24 h, the cell cycle and mitochondrial membrane potential of the cultures were evaluated using flow cytometry. Nonirradiated cultures served as control., Results: Cultures irradiated with 16 J/cm 2 had higher percentages of cells in the synthesis phase than control cultures (p < 0.05), and no significant differences were found regarding the percentage of cells with viable mitochondria between irradiated and control cultures. No significant difference in cell senescence was found between control cultures and cultures irradiated with 2 or 16 J/cm 2 ., Conclusions: LED irradiation at 630 nm (37 mW/cm 2 , 75 mW) with radiant exposure of 16 J/cm 2 was capable of inducing a proliferative response in stem cells from the pulp tissue of deciduous teeth without affecting mitochondrial function or inducing senescence.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of GaAlAs low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on collagen IV remodeling of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle in rats after cryolesion., Background: Considerable interest exists in skeletal muscle regeneration in situations such as repair after exercise-induced muscle injury, after muscle transplantation, in muscular dystrophy, exercise-induced muscle injury, and the recovery of strength after atrophy due to disuse. A number of studies have demonstrated the potential of LLLT in facilitating the muscle-healing process; however, no consensus is found in the literature regarding the best laser-irradiation parameters., Methods: Adult male Wistar rats (n = 45) were used and randomly divided into three groups: control (n = 5); nontreated cryolesioned group (n = 20), and LLLT-cryolesioned group (n = 20). The cryolesioned groups were analyzed at 1, 7, 14, and 21 days after the injury procedure. Laser irradiation was performed 3 times per week on the injured region by using the GaAlAs laser (660 nm; beam spot of 0.04 cm(2), output power of 20 mW, power density of 500 mW/cm(2), and energy density of 5 J/cm(2), for 10 sec). The muscles were removed, frozen, cryosectioned, and then stained with hematoxylin-eosin for the visualization of general morphology or used for immunohistochemical analysis of collagen IV., Results: It was demonstrated that LLLT promotes an increase in collagen IV immunolabeling in skeletal muscle in the first 7 days after acute trauma caused by cryoinjury, but does not modify the duration of the tissue-repair process. Even with LLLT, the injured muscle tissue needs ∼21 days to achieve the same state of organization as that in the noninjured muscle., Conclusion: The collagen IV content is modulated in regenerating skeletal muscle under LLLT, which might be associated with better tissue outcome, although the histologic analysis did not detect tissue improvement in the LLLT group.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of low-level laser on the control of pain and the repair of recurring aphthous stomatitis (RAS)., Background: One of the most frequent pathologic conditions in the oral cavity is RAS. This multifactor immunologic inflammatory lesion causes patient discomfort, and treatment is controversial because of its unknown etiology. A number of treatment modalities have been proposed, but none is definitive. Low-level laser treatment (LLLT) has been used for lesions of an inflammatory nature, not as an inhibitor of the process, but for its modulating action and reparative effect on tissues., Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with RAS were divided into one group treated with a topical corticoid agent (n = 5) and another group treated with laser (n = 15). Group I received conventional treatment with triamcinolone acetonide 4 times per day. The patients in Group II received laser treatment with an InGaA1P diode laser with wavelength of 670 nm, 50 mW, 3 J/cm(2) per point in daily sessions (once per day) on consecutive days. Both treatments were applied until the disappearance of the lesions. All patients were evaluated on a daily basis, and the following clinical parameters were determined during each session: pain intensity before and after treatment and clinical measurement of lesion size., Results: The results revealed that 75% of the patients reported a reduction in pain in the same session after laser treatment, and total regression of the lesion occurred after 4 days. Total regression in the corticoid group was from 5 to 7 days., Conclusion: The use of LLLT under the conditions administered in the present study demonstrated analgesic and healing effects with regard to RAS.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of phototherapy on the viability of cultured C2C12 myoblasts under different nutritional conditions (muscle injury model) using low-energy gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) and aluminium-gallium-indium-phosphide (InGaAlP) lasers with different wavelengths and powers., Background Data: The beneficial effects of phototherapy using low-energy lasers depend on irradiation parameters and type of laser used, but there are no data in the literature on C2C12 myoblasts proliferation after phototherapy with GaAlAs and InGaAlP lasers., Methods: A C2C12 cell line cultured in regular (10% fetal bovine serum, FBS) and nutrient-deficient (5% FBS) media were irradiated with low-energy GaAlAs (660 nm) and InGaAlP (780 nm) lasers with energy densities of 3.8, 6.3, and 10 J/cm2, and 3.8, 10, and 17.5 J/cm2, respectively. Cell proliferation was assessed indirectly 24 h after irradiation by measuring the mitochondrial activity and using the crystal violet assay., Results: There were no significant differences in cell viability between laser-treated myoblasts and control cultures for all tested parameters after 24 h of cell culture, although cell cultures grown in regular nutrient medium supplemented with 10% FBS exhibited higher growth rates than cultures, irradiated or not, grown in nutrient-deficient medium., Conclusion: Laser phototherapy did not improve C2C12 viability under regular or nutrient-deficient (muscle injury model) conditions using the above parameters.
