Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obesity (OB) lie on the two ends of the broad spectrum of extreme weight conditions (EWC). Both disorders entail the constant risk to one's body integrity. Importantly, risk-taking is supported by internal signals, the perception of which is typically distorted in EWC. In this study, we sought to characterize in EWC: (i) risky decision-making by contrasting situations in which people process bodies or neutral objects and (ii) the relationship between interoceptive ability and risky decision-making. In a between-subject design, participants with AN restricting type, participants with class 2 OB, and two groups of matched healthy controls (HC) (total N = 160) were administered either the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) or a modified version of it by using a body-related stimulus as a cue in the place of the balloon. Moreover, we collected a measure of interoceptive sensibility and a measure of interoceptive accuracy. Results showed that, when analysing the global population as a continuum based on the BMI, the risk propensity decreased as a function of increased BMI, only for the task involving a body-related stimulus. Moreover, while HC risk propensity toward a body-related stimulus correlated with interoceptive sensibility, such correlation was absent in participants with AN. Individuals with OB, on the opposite pole, showed mixed interaction between interoception and risky decision-making in both tasks. "Body integrity dysphoria" (BID) is a severe condition affecting nonpsychotic individuals. In the amputation variant of BID, a limb may be experienced as not being part of the body, despite normal anatomical development and intact sensorimotor functions. We previously demonstrated altered brain structural (gray matter) and functional connectivity in 16 men with BID with a long-lasting and exclusive desire for left leg amputation. Here, we aimed to identify, in the same sample, altered patterns of white matter structural connectivity. Fractional anisotropy (FA), derived from diffusion tensor imaging data, was considered as a measure of structural connectivity. Results showed reduced structural connectivity of: (i) the right superior parietal lobule (rSPL) with the right cuneus, with the superior occipital and with the posterior cingulate gyri, (ii) the pars orbitalis of the right middle frontal gyrus (rMFGOrb) with the putamen, and (iii) the left middle temporal gyrus (lMTG) with the pars triangularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus. Increased connectivity was found between the right paracentral lobule (rPLC) and the right caudate nucleus. By using a complementary method of investigation, we confirmed and extended previous results from the same sample of individuals with BID, showing structural alterations between areas tuned to the processing of the sensorimotor representations of the affected leg (rPCL), and to higher-order components of bodily representation such as the body image (rSPL) and visual processing. Alongside this network for bodily awareness, other networks such as the limbic (rMFGOrb) and the mirror (lMTG) systems showed alterations in structural connectivity. In healthy subjects, the transient perturbation of body part ownership is accompanied by regional skin temperature decrease. This observation leaves an open question about a possible body part-specific thermoregulatory response in pathological conditions, in which the sense of ownership over that body part is altered. For instance, Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID), a poorly understood neuropsychiatric disorder, is characterised by the non-acceptance of one or more of one's extremities. This unsettling feeling pervasively captures the individuals' attention towards the unwanted limb. Previous studies characterised BID in terms of absent ownership feeling with preserved ownership judgment. We explored for the first time whether this altered feeling is also associated with a specific thermoregulatory response. We recorded thermal image sequences of circumscribed regions of the limbs' skin in seven individuals with BID desiring to remove one leg while they were invited to focus their attention toward one particular limb (arm or leg). Their event-related thermoregulatory pattern was compared to a group of healthy matched controls. In individuals with BID but not in control persons, we found a bilateral decrease in leg temperature when focusing their attention on either the unwanted or accepted leg. The event-related thermoregulatory response for both upper limbs was similar between individuals with BID and healthy controls. Our results suggest that the alteration of the sense of body ownership in neuropsychiatric conditions such as BID may critically rest on specific event-related thermoregulatory patterns in response to modulation of attention to body parts., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The implicit and explicit awareness of owning a body and its parts is a constant accompaniment in our everyday life and our interaction with the outside world. The way in which we build and maintain a coherent sense of body ownership is not fully understood. It has been postulated that the integration between exteroceptive, interoceptive, and proprioceptive signals may play a fundamental role in the sense of body ownership. For instance, studies on healthy subjects and brain-damaged patients have suggested that alterations in the sense of body ownership are coupled with autonomic signal changes, such as thermoregulatory reactions. However, the available evidence is conflicting, possibly due to shortcomings in the experimental paradigm that previous studies have adopted. In this study, we explore the relationship between body ownership, thermoregulation, and thermal sensitivity through a novel application of the mirror-box illusion paradigm, overcoming some of the limitations of previous studies. We find a bilateral decrease in hand skin temperature, together with reduced thermal sensitivity for warm thermal stimuli following the induction of the illusion of ownership towards the participant's reflected hand. Dyslexia can have different manifestations: this has motivated different theories on its nature, on its underlying brain bases and enduring controversies on how to best treat it. The relative weight of the different manifestations has never been evaluated using both behavioural and fMRI measures, a challenge taken here to assess the major systems called into play in dyslexia by different theories. We found that adult well-compensated dyslexics were systematically impaired only in reading and in visuo-phonological tasks, while deficits for other systems (e.g., motor/cerebellar, visual magnocellular/motion perception) were only very occasional. In line with these findings, fMRI showed a reliable hypoactivation only for the task of reading, in the left occipito-temporal cortex (l-OTC). The l-OTC, normally a crossroad between the reading system and other systems, did not show the same level of intersection in dyslexics; yet, it was not totally silent because it responded, in segregated parts, during auditory phonological and visual motion perception tasks. This minimal behavioural and functional anatomical comorbidity demonstrates that a specific deficit of reading is the best description for developmental dyslexia, at least for adult well-compensated cases, with clear implications for rehabilitation strategies. The reduced intersection of multiple systems in the l-OTC suggests that dyslexics suffer from a coarser connectivity, leading to disconnection between the multiple domains that normally interact during reading., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Right brain damage patients may not complain of a left sided paralysis up to the point of denying it or even claiming of having just moved an otherwise paralyzed limb. This condition is known as anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP). Recent behavioural experiments suggest that some residual intentionality might be preserved in patients with anosognosia and that the false belief of having moved originates from a failure to notice discrepancies between movement expectancies and the actual state of the motor system. This failure may be caused by a lack of afferent sensory information concerning the movement or alternatively by a direct dysfunction of the brain regions involved in actions' motor monitoring (i.e., the comparator system). Here we examined the effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the right premotor cortex in a patient with a bilateral lesion, involving predominantly the right hemisphere, and a dense unawareness for his left hemiplegia. During sham or anodal tDCS the patient was requested to judge his ability to perform simple motor actions (i) without actually executing the movement itself ("offline" condition) and after having performed a series of verbally cued finger opposition movements ("online" condition) with (i) eyes-closed or (ii) eyes-open. We found that anodal tDCS induces a significant remission of the false experience of movement only when the patient is requested to actually perform the movement with eyes open. Conversely, the patient's awareness does not improve in both the "offline" condition (in which the patient does not attempt to perform the movement) and in the "online" condition, when vision is precluded ("online" condition, eyes-closed). We conclude that the stimulation of the premotor cortex by tDCS activates brain regions involved in motor monitoring, temporary restoring the ability of the motor comparator system to correctly appreciate afferent information and build up a veridical motor awareness., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The vestibular system processes information about head movement and orientation. No unimodal vestibular cortex has been identified in the mammalian brain. Rather, vestibular inputs are combined with many other sensory signals in the cortex. This arrangement suggests that vestibular input could influence processing in other sensory modalities. Here we show that vestibular stimulation differentially modulates two submodalities of the somatosensory system, increasing sensitivity to tactile input, and independently reducing sensitivity to nociceptive input. These modulations of touch and pain can clearly be distinguished from supramodal attentional effects of vestibular stimulation, because they are bilateral and operate in different directions. Outside the artificial conditions of laboratory stimulation, the vestibular system codes movements of the head, indicating a new relation between the body and the external world. We suggest the vestibular system participates in a form of sensory signal management, changing the balance between the various sensory systems as the relation between the body and the external environment changes. Somatoparaphrenia is a delusional belief whereby a patient feels that a paralyzed limb does not belong to his body; the symptom is typically associated with unilateral neglect and most frequently with anosognosia for hemiplegia. This association of symptoms makes anatomical inference based on single case studies not sufficiently specific. On the other hand, the only three anatomical group studies on somatoparaphrenia are contradictory: the right posterior insula, the supramarginal gyrus and the posterior corona radiata, or the right medial or orbito-frontal regions were all proposed as specific lesional correlates. We compared 11 patients with and 11 without somatoparaphrenia matched for the presence and severity of other associated symptoms (neglect, motor deficits and anosognosia). To take into account the frequent association of SP and neglect and hemiplegia, patients with and without somatoparaphrenia were also compared with a group of fifteen right brain damage patients without neglect and hemiplegia. We found a lesion pattern involving a fronto-temporo-parietal network typically associated with spatial neglect, hemiplegia and anosognosia. Somatoparaphrenic patients showed an additional lesion pattern primarily involving white matter and subcortical grey structures (thalamus, basal ganglia and amygdala). Further cortical damage was present in the middle and inferior frontal gyrus, postcentral gyrus and hippocampus. We propose that somatoparaphrenia occurs providing that a distributed cortical lesion pattern is present together with a subcortical lesion load that prevents most sensory input from being processed in neocortical structures; involvement of deep cortical and subcortical grey structures of the temporal lobe may contribute to reduce the sense of familiarity experienced by somatoparaphrenic patients for their paralyzed limb., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Srl. The effects of adaptation to prisms displacing rightwards the field of vision on omission errors, and on perseveration and other graphic productions in a line cancellation task, were assessed in nine right-brain-damaged patients with left unilateral spatial neglect. Prism adaptation improved both neglect, as indexed by omission errors, and perseveration behaviour, up to a delay of 60 min. No correlation was found between omission and perseveration errors in all assessments. The suggestion is made that perseveration and other complex graphic productions made by right brain-damaged-patients with left spatial unilateral neglect is due to a defective monitoring of complex motor behaviour, frequently associated to cerebral damage involving the right frontal lobe. Interpretations of perseveration behaviour in terms of allochiria and directional hypokinesia are considered, and their limits discussed.

Forty-nine patients with recent right (RHD) and left (LHD) hemispheric vascular lesions were compared on a task of somesthetic-visual matching of meaningful objects and of meaningless shapes. A selective impairment for shapes was found in RHD subjects, while LHD patients were impaired in object matching. This double dissociation conforms to the classical distinction between apperceptive and associative agnosia, and extends to the somesthetic modality the "double dissociation" between left and right hemispheric lesions and associative and apperceptive recognition disorders, which has been found in other modalities of agnosia.

In three right-brain damaged patients with contralesional neglect vestibular stimulation induced a temporary remission of left hemianesthesia, in addition to the well-known transient recovery of extrapersonal and personal neglect. These findings indicate that in neglect patients attentional factors may play an important role in producing apparently "primary" sensory deficits, which may be interpreted in terms of defective access to conscious processing.

The possible dissociation of unilateral neglect in far and near extra-personal space was systematically investigated using a modified version of the Wundt-Jastrow area illusion test. This task, which requires no motor response, has been shown to be sensitive to unilateral neglect. Stimuli were presented at two different distances (near and far) to a group of 70 patients with right hemispheric lesion (18 in acute and 52 in chronic stage). Twenty-eight patients evidenced unilateral neglect; that is, they displayed unexpected (i.e., contrary to the known illusory effect) responses when the stimuli were perceived as oriented toward the left side. However, performances in the two conditions were highly correlated and there were no individual instances of dissociation. These results suggest that the presence of a motor response may be necessary to show behavioral dissociations between different parts of extra-personal space.
