We report the neuropsychological and MRI investigation of a patient (GP) who developed a selective impairment of spatial short-term memory (STM) following damage to the dorso-mesial areas of the right frontal lobe. We assessed in this patient spatial STM with an experimental procedure that evaluated immediate and 5-20 s delayed recall of verbal, visual and spatial stimuli. The patient scored significantly worse than normal controls on tests that required delayed recall of spatial data. This could not be ascribed to a deficit of spatial episodic long-term memory because amnesic patients performed normally on these tests. Conversely, the patient scored in the normal range on tests of immediate recall of verbal, visual and spatial data and tests of delayed recall of verbal and visual data. Comparison with a previously described patient who had a selective deficit in immediate spatial recall and an ischemic lesion that affected frontal and parietal dorso-mesial areas in the right hemisphere (Carlesimo GA, Perri R, Turriziani P, Tomaiuolo F, Caltagirone C. Remembering what but not where: independence of spatial and visual working memory in the human brain. Cortex. 2001 Sep; 37(4):519-34) suggests that the right parietal areas are involved in the short-term storage of spatial information and that the dorso-mesial regions of the right frontal underlie mechanisms for the delayed maintenance of the same data.

Interest is being shown in a componential analysis of performance on declarative memory tasks that distinguishes two different kinds of access to stored memories, recollection and familiarity. From a developmental perspective, it has been hypothesized that recollection emerges later and shows more developmental changes than familiarity. Nevertheless, the contribution of recollection and familiarity to the recognition performance of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) has been rarely examined. The present study was aimed at investigating the qualitative profile of declarative long-term memory in a group of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS). We compared 13 individuals with WS and 13 mental-age-matched typically developing children in two different experimental paradigms to assess the contribution of familiarity and recollection to recognition performance. We adopted a modified version of the process dissociation procedure and a task dissociation procedure, both of which are suited to individuals with ID. Results of both experimental paradigms demonstrated reduced recollection and spared familiarity in the declarative memory performances of individuals with WS. These results provide direct evidence of a dissociation between recollection and familiarity in a neurodevelopmental disorder and are discussed in relation to alternative approaches for explaining abnormal cognition in individuals with ID., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: The closing-in phenomenon, first described by Mayer Gross (1935) as a tendency to close in on models while performing a constructional task, occurs with a relatively high frequency in patients with dementia. The phenomenon may appear in several tasks, but it is more usually observed in tests of copying drawings. In the present study we examined the hypothesis that in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) the phenomenon may be related to particularly severe visuo-spatial dysfunction., Methods: Thirty-nine of an overall sample of 382 patients consecutively admitted to an AD unit exhibited closing-in in their copying drawings performance. The presence of closing-in was diagnosed when, in at least one of three drawings, the copy touched, in one or more parts, the model., Results: With respect to another group of 39 AD patients with constructional apraxia but who showed no closing-in behaviour, patients with closing-in showed more severe impairment on several tests of visuo-spatial abilities. The two groups did not differ in the frequency of neurological primitive reflexes or performance on tests of executive functioning., Conclusions: The present study supports the interpretation that the closing-in phenomenon in patients with AD is a compensatory strategy to overcome basic visuo-spatial dysfunctions involved in the preliminary visuo-perceptual analysis and/or in the on-line maintenance of the visual representation of the model while performing a copying drawing task. Possible limits in the conclusions of the present study are related to the retrospective nature of the present study and to the choice of considering only overlap-type forms of closing behaviour., ((c) 2009 Elsevier Srl. We report the neuropsychological and MRI investigation of a patient (MV) who developed a selective impairment of visual-spatial working memory (WM) with preservation not only of verbal, but also of visual shape WM, following an ischemic lesion in the cerebral territory supplied by one of the terminal branches of the right anterior cerebral artery. MV was defective in visual-spatial WM whether the experimental procedure involved arm movement for target pointing or not. Also, in agreement with the role generally assigned to visual-spatial WM in visual imagery, MV was extremely slow in the mental rotation of visually and verbally presented objects. In striking contrast with the WM deficit, MV's visual-spatial long-term memory was intact. The behavioral and neuroanatomical investigation of MV provides support for the hypothesis that the superior frontal gyrus (BA 6) and the dorsomedial cortex of the parietal lobe (BA 7) are part of the neural circuitry underlying visual-spatial WM in humans.

Patients after severe closed-head injury (CHI) demonstrate reduced ability to spontaneously utilize semantic memory during word-list memory tests and when requested to answer questions regarding general knowledge. However, they show normal lexical facilitation in both automatic and intentional semantic priming paradigms. The present study was aimed at investigating two alternative hypotheses a) that the deficit in semantic processing after CHI is the result of impaired access to an otherwise normal semantic system or b) that it reflects a loss of knowledge from a deteriorated semantic store. For this purpose, the performance of 15 CHI patients on an automatic Semantic Priming paradigm and on tests of Picture Naming and Semantic Judgment were compared to those of 14 normal controls (NC). Although CHI patients' reaction times were significantly slower than those of NCs, the semantic priming effect was comparable in the two groups. Instead, CHI patients performed significantly worse than NCs in the naming and semantic judgment tasks. These results provide evidence that CHI patients access semantic memory automatically at a normal rate. However, when the task is more demanding in terms of processing requests, then CHI patients' performance becomes defective.

Contrasting theories posit the source of verbal repetition priming in the activation of preexisting memory representations in the input lexicons or, alternatively, in the formation of new episodic memory traces. The two hypotheses predict different outcomes from the comparison of developmental rates of visual and auditory verbal repetition priming. The activation theory predicts a developmental dissociation between the early maturation of auditory priming and the later maturation of visuo-verbal priming, contingent upon the discrepant acquisition rates of the auditory and visual input lexicons. The episodic theory, instead, does not make such an assumption. We administered visual and auditory implicit Stem Completion to 40 reading beginners (first-graders), 40 third-graders and 20 fifth-graders. Consistent with previous reports, auditory priming was stable across different age groups. Visual priming and a measure of lexicality in reading, instead, showed a parallel developmental increase passing from reading beginners to third-graders and to fifth-graders. In the overall group, visual priming and the measure of lexicality in reading were significantly associated. These data describe a new developmental dissociation in the memory abilities of normal children and provide further support for the hypothesis that repetition priming for words reflects facilitated access to previously established memory representations.

We report the case of a patient (RC) who developed a severe visual agnosia, associated to alexia without agraphia, color anomia and amnesia, following an ischemic stroke in the territory supplied by the left posterior cerebral artery. Based on his proficient performance on tests evaluating analysis of elementary visual features, formation of viewer-centered and object-centered representations of visual stimuli and discrimination between drawings representing real and unreal objects, we concluded that the critical locus of deficit was a disconnection between the normally functioning visual memory store and the semantic system. RC's disturbance in visual processing of human faces paralleled his recognition disorder of other classes of objects. The possible contribution of neurobiological factors in determining RC's agnosic deficit is discussed.

This study aimed to characterize the qualitative pattern of focal retrograde memory impairment shown by a post-encephalitic patient (AV). AV's memory deficit encompassed autobiographical data, public events and famous people. In a public events questionnaire, she demonstrated a smooth negative temporal gradient with good recollection of events that occurred about 15 years before the disease but poor memory of more recent events. Her visual input lexicon was unimpaired, as demonstrated by normal lexicality judgment for words and normal familiarity judgment for proper names, but she was poor in familiarity judgment for famous faces (prosopagnosia) and in accessing the meaning of words or specific information about people. The cerebral MRI demonstrated widespread abnormal intensity areas encroaching upon the white matter of temporal, parietal and occipital lobes but sparing temporal poles and orbito-frontal cortex.

A battery of tests evaluating different aspects of retrograde memory (autobiographical, public events, semantic knowledge) was administered to a group of 20 patients who had suffered from a severe closed-head injury (CHI) and who had recovered from the post-traumatic amnesia period and to a group of sex-, age- and education-matched normal controls. Results document a high prevalence of retrograde memory deficits among CHI individuals. The deficit involves both autobiographical and public events memories and extends to early acquired basic and cultural knowledge. The severity of the deficit does not vary according to some kind of temporal gradient or according to a presumed hierarchical or modality organization of the semantic system. However, in the domain of basic knowledge it more severely affects information pertaining to living than nonliving categories of objects. With the exception of a more severe deficit in retrieving autobiographical events occurred in the last year before trauma in a subgroup of patients with focal lesions restricted to the right hemisphere as compared to left lesioned patients, no clear relationship emerges between severity of the retrograde memory deficit and locus of focal cerebral lesions as demonstrated by neuroradiological exams.

This study aimed at investigating different memory components involved in word list forgetting by young and elderly healthy individuals. For this purpose, we analyzed in 55 young (age range 20-35) and 50 aged (age range 60-80) healthy subjects the memory decay passing from the fifth immediate to the delayed recall trial of the Rey's Auditory Learning task as a function of the position of the words in the list. Young and elderly groups displayed the same forgetting rate for words recalled from the primacy and mid-list tracts of the serial position curve. However, memory loss for the recency positions was disproportionately larger in the elderly than in the young group. These data demonstrate that aged subjects rely on short-lived memory processes in immediate recall of terminal list items more extensively than young subjects and, as a consequence, a larger proportion of words become inaccessible to them following a delay.

This study was aimed at investigating long-term forgetting in chronic survivors of severe closed-head injury (CHI). For this purpose, performance decay passing from a 30-sec- to a 60-min-delay test in four memory procedures (Free Recall of unrelated stimuli, Free Recall of related stimuli. Cued Recall and y/n Recognition) of 20 CHI and 20 normal controls was analyzed. Comparable 30-sec-delay performance in CHI and control patients were obtained by manipulating exposure times to study material during the learning phase. Results demonstrated accelerated forgetting in CHI patients in the Free Recall of the related list only. This finding was particularly evident in CHI patients suffering from a focal temporal lobe lesion. These data are discussed in light of retrieval and encoding deficits characterizing memory disorders in CHI patients.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic condition characterised by intellectual disability, typical facial dysmorphology and several medical anomalies. A specific neuropsychological profile with a dissociation between language (relatively preserved) and visuo-spatial abilities (more seriously impaired) has been hypothesised in these children. Memory abilities of these patients have not been adequately investigated, although they may substantially contribute to better understanding their neuropsychological profile. The present study aimed at investigating verbal and spatial memory in patients with WS (N = 16). Their performance was compared with that of normally developing children on tasks of verbal and spatial span and immediate and delayed recall of verbal and visuo-perceptual materials. Memory abilities of WS children appear to be characterised by defective visuo-spatial memory, both in the short-term and long-term domain, and a dissociation between normal short- but deficient long-term verbal learning. Results are interpreted by supporting the thesis that intellectual disability reflects the defective functioning of a complex system in which some cognitive competencies may be disrupted more than others (Detterman, 1987; Vicari, Albertini and Caltagirone, 1992).

This study investigated the contribution of different components of the serial position curve to the accelerated forgetting rate displayed by amnesic and degenerative demented patients in word-list recall. For this purpose, we analyzed immediate and 15 min delayed recall performances on Rey's 15-word learning task of 16 pure amnesic, 15 Alzheimer's demented and 81 healthy subjects. Results documented that in all groups most forgetting occurred at the expense of terminal items of the word list. Nevertheless, both amnesic and demented patients showed a disproportionately larger memory loss on the recent part of the serial position curve than healthy subjects. Finally, amnesics (but not AD patients) suffered from a significantly larger forgetting rate for primacy items than normal controls. These data demonstrate that a critical deficit in memory disordered patients is represented by a failure in transferring information from a transitory memory status to a more durable storing condition. At least in amnesic patients, our results also suggest "true" long-term forgetting, presumably due to decay or to the intervening inaccessibility of previously stored memory representations.

This study investigated the hypothesis that memory disordered patients suffer of an exalted forgetting rate from long-term memory within the first few minutes following acquisition. For this purpose, we administered to groups of Alzheimer's (AD), Multi-infarct demented (MID), pure amnesic and age-matched normal controls a test involving immediate and 15-min delayed word-list recall and a modified version of the Huppert and Piercy's procedure (1978) assessing yes/no Recognition for pictures at 90 sec, 10 min, 1 hr and 24 hr delay intervals. Results showed an abnormal immediate/delayed performance decline for the word-list recall in AD and pure amnesic patients. In the same period, however, their Recognition score in the Huppert and Piercy's procedure decayed at normal rate. In the following intervals (1 hr and 24 hr), both groups disclosed abnormal forgetting slopes. Vascular demented patients, by contrast, disclosed fully normal forgetting rates both on the word-list recall and on the Huppert and Piercy's procedure. These findings are discussed in the light of cognitive mechanisms and neuroanatomical structures presumably underlying memory consolidation.
