Purpose: To describe the visual results and postoperative complications of congenital cataract surgeries performed between 2005 and 2016., Methods: A retrospective consecutive case series of congenital cataract surgeries was carried out at the Dijon University Hospital in France. Intraocular lens implantation was primary or secondary according to age. Pre- and post-operative assessment was performed through ophthalmologic consultations with orthoptic measurements. Visual function and adverse events were recorded., Results: Fifty-six consecutive procedures were evaluated in 37 infants. Overall, 26.8% of patients had unilateral cataracts, and 73.2% had bilateral cataracts. Median age at surgery was 1.0 years [IQR (interquartile range): 0.3-5.2] and 2.7 years [IQR: 0.4-9.5] for unilateral and bilateral cataracts, respectively. Median best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at the last follow-up was 0.5logMAR [IQR: 0.2-0.8] and 0.1logMAR [IQR: 0.0-0.8] for the unilateral and bilateral group, respectively. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) was the primary postoperative complication: 60.0% in unilateral cataract and 46.3% in bilateral cataracts (P=0.019). Median follow-up was 2.0 years [IQR: 1.0-5.0]., Conclusion: Congenital cataract surgery appears to be safe and effective when combined with early, conscientious amblyopia treatment. Purpose: To describe the visual results and postoperative complications of cataract surgery with primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation performed in infants and to determine possible predictive factors related to poor visual outcome., Methods: A retrospective consecutive case series of cataract surgeries with primary IOL implantation in infants was performed. Visual outcome and postoperative complications were recorded. A final visual acuity>0.5 logMAR was considered as a poor visual outcome., Results: Sixty-one consecutive procedures were evaluated in 43 infants. Eighteen infants (42%) had bilateral cataract surgery and 25 (58%) had monocular surgery. The median age at primary surgery was 5.7 months (range: 4 weeks-24 months). The median follow-up was 47 months (range: 14-60 months). The median best-corrected visual acuity in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) at the last follow-up examination was 1.00 in the case of unilateral surgery and 0.40 in the case of bilateral surgery. The overall visual result in all eyes was 0.50 logMAR. A better visual result was achieved when the infants were younger than 6 months or older than 12 months of age when surgery was performed. Opacification in the visual axis requiring secondary surgery occurred in 54% of the eyes (33/61). Postoperative inflammation occurred in 41% of the eyes (25/61) but was not associated with poor visual outcome (P=0.39). Glaucoma affected 11.5% of the eyes (7/61) and was significantly associated with poorer visual function (OR: 15.36, 95% CI 1.02-230.35, P=0.05). Compared with the unilateral cataract group, the OR of poor visual acuity was 0.06 (95% CI 0.01-0.35, P<0.01) in the bilateral cataract group. No statistical association was observed between final visual acuity>0.5 logMAR and leukocoria at time of diagnosis, IOL-related complications and postoperative strabismus., Conclusions: Primary IOL implantation is associated with an overall satisfactory visual outcome, especially when surgery is performed before 6 months or after 12 months of age and in bilateral cases. Objective: The goal of this study was to analyze the epidemiology and maternal, prenatal and perinatal risk factors for congenital cataracts., Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of all consecutive cases of congenital cataracts diagnosed and managed at hôpital Nord Marseille, France. We describe demographic, personal, maternal and familial characteristics of these patients., Results: We identified 59 children with congenital cataract. The group consists of 31 girls (53%) and 28 boys (47%). Cataract was bilateral in 71% of cases and unilateral in 29% of cases. This group is first divided according to etiological forms. Idiopathic cataract accounts for 63% of patients. Genetic and infectious cataract accounts for 34% and 3%, respectively. According to the clinical presentation, congenital cataract was an isolated finding in 51% of cases. It was associated with ocular abnormalities in 27% of cases and with systemic abnormalities in 22% of cases. The diagnosis was made upon routine screening in 41% of cases. Leucoria and strabismus led to the diagnosis in 24% and 19%, respectively. The average age of diagnosis was 19.7 months., Conclusion: Congenital cataract is a relatively rare condition. The description of a series of 59 cases is important as well as the comparison of our results to large epidemiological data previously published.
