Purpose: To compare Nd:YAG laser rates following implantation of AcrySof(®) SN60WF (Alcon), Akreos(®) AO-MI60 (Baush & Lomb), and Hoya(®) YA-60BB (Hoya) intraocular lenses., Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at three French centers with each implanting at least two of the three implants. Included patients had undergone uncomplicated cataract surgery with at least 3 years of follow-up. Records of patients implanted with one of the three IOL's were drawn randomly from the surgical logs. Postoperative data were obtained from the medical records of either the surgeon or the referring physician. Time elapsing until Nd:YAG laser was analysed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves., Results: Three hundred eyes were implanted (AcrySof(®) 126, Akreos(®) 89, and Hoya(®) 85). AcrySof(®) recipients were the youngest (AcrySof(®) 72.1, Akreos(®) 76.4, and Hoya(®) 75.2 years of age: P=0.0007). The sex ratio was 4:6 male:female. Follow-up was longest for Hoya eyes (AcrySof(®) 29.4, Akreos(®) 24.6 and Hoya(®) 34.6 months; P=0.0002). Eyes implanted with AcrySof(®) had 1.74 times less chance of Nd:YAG laser treatment than Hoya eyes (P=0.0327) and 3.50 times less than Akreos(®) eyes (P<0.0001). The results remained unchanged when the analysis was restricted to events in the first 24 months (Risk Ratios: Hoya(®)=2.64: P=0.02; and Akreos(®)=4.22: P=0.0001). Adjustment on unbalanced confounding variables did not alter the results., Conclusions: Eyes with AcrySof(®) implants required significantly fewer Nd:YAG laser capsulotomies than those with Hoya(®) and Akreos(®) implants and were therefore less subject to Nd:YAG laser treatment complications, thus ensuring better vision at the lowest cost., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. MRI of the whole spine and radionuclide bone scan were performed prospectively on 50 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed non small-cell lung carcinoma. The final diagnosis of vertebral metastasis was made by means of follow-up studies. The prevalence of vertebral metastasis was 24% (12/50 patients). The sensitivity of MR imaging (92%) was superior to that of radionuclide bone scan (67%) in the detection of vertebral involvement, the specificity was the same (94%). MRI of the spine was not useful as a screening procedure before treatment, but offered advantages over radionuclide bone scan in patients with symptoms and when bone scintigraphy detected abnormal foci, including identification of additional vertebral metastatic foci and better analysis of the extent of metastatic involvement within vertebrae.

Among 998 children with recurrent respiratory diseases 26 children with selective IgA deficiency were found. Three groups were considered according to IgA level in serum: group I with IgA under 0.05 g per litre; group II with IgA between 0.05 and 0.3 g per litre; group III with IgA above 0.3 and under 1 g per litre. Non specific immunity was studied in these patients including immunoglobulin levels, alpha-1-antitrypsin (A.A.T.) phenotypes, phagocytosis of staphylococcus aureus by PMN, lysozyme level, complement system. Cellular immunity was evaluated by IDR tests and rosette forming cells (RE). Only non specific immune systems were disturbed in some patients and appeared as aggravating factors in IgA deficient patients. We found: Abnormal phenotypes of ATT in 11 cases; deficiencies of engulfment in 6 cases, of bactericidal activities of PMN in 7 cases out of 16 studied; decrease of lysozyme level in 4 cases out of 17 studied; increase of IgE level in 9 cases with atopic symptoms in 7 patients. In our experience the chief aggravating factor in IgA deficient patients is abnormal phenotype of AAT.

Numerous techniques are in use in medicine for temperature determination either from thermal conduction phenomena, or from hot body radiations. These are essentially thermometry, radiometry and thermography. During attempts to treat cancer by hyperthermia, temperature knowledge, at the level of the target volume and the adjoining parts, is essential. These deep temperature measurements are yet a problem and certainly need new sensor technologies.

Results of treating superficial human cancerous tumors by ultrasound (1-3 MHz) or microwave (434 MHz) hyperthermia, alone or combined with radiotherapy or chemotherapy are presented according to the heating method. The comparison of in vivo thermal distributions obtained at depth with these two techniques could partially explain their different therapeutic efficiency.

We describe preliminary results concerning the mathematical modelling of the hyperthermia induced by an ultrasound transducer. The developed method should allow to predict in advance the local temperatures in every clinical case, as well as to conceive and optimize more complex ultrasound generators.

We have measured the proton longitudinal relaxation time T1 in healthy tissues and tumors as a function of the Larmor frequency and temperature. We deduce the proportions and dynamics of bound and free water as differenciation criteria for NMR imaging.
