During the Great War, Canada deployed military nurses, like the other dominions of the British Empire. The "bluebirds" were the first nurses awarded the status of officer. Underprepared for war, they were able to adapt themselves in order to carry out the missions entrusted to them.

Aim of the Study: The aim of this work is to show to what extent a psychosocial evaluation can lead bring to comprehension of the subjectivity of Quality of Life (QoL) among HIV-infected patients. Evaluation of QoL makes it possible to understand the link between the therapeutic effectiveness and the subjective evaluation of the treatment, but also to estimate more precisely how people live and take their treatment in the context of HIV infection., Method: This work confronts the variation of QoL with the variation of several social and psychosocial parameters identified as of the components of the system, which is the subjective evaluation, and more precisely to a specific side effect of Highly Active AntiRetroviral Therapies (HAART): lipodystrophy syndrome that consists in body fat redistribution. This side effect could consist in an accumulation of body fat, or a loss of body fat or a combination of both symptoms. The analysis was made on the data from APROCO-COPILOTE cohort composed of HIV-infected patients initiating HAART., Results: Among a sample of 706 patients follow-up for three years and with available QoL data, we identified the variations of QoL according to the variation of this specific side effect and according to gender. Results show that lipodystrophy syndrome has a determinant impact on QoL different among male and female patients. Adjusted on clinical and socio-demographic characteristics, impaired women's QoL is associated with accumulation of body fat and impaired men's QoL is associated with loss of body fat., Conclusion: These results underline the role of body image on subjective evaluation of QoL. The analysis of empirical data made it possible to highlight the social implication of the evaluation of QoL from the role of the social support, patient-provider relationship and the social context.

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of millimetric thin slices low dose chest CT., Materials and Methods: Forty one patients underwent a chest CT thin slices (1 mm every 10 mm) exploration using both a 170 milliamperage and a low dose acquisition using 80 mA. The examination were read by 2 senior radiologists specialized in chest imaging without knowledge of acquisition parameters and in a random order. A statistical analysis of interobserver agreement was performed using Kappa analysis. Doses of both acquisition were estimated by compagning the dose length product calculated by the CT software and be using a simulation software., Results: Excellent interobserver and intermodalities agreements were found. A 53% decrease in dose was estimated with the low dose modality compare to the normal dose., Conclusion: Low dose thin slice chest CT using 80 mA has a similar diagnosis accuracy as standard dose thin slice chest CT and delivers half dose of irradiation.

In many cases, epidemiological studies demonstrate carcinogenic risk of occupational exposures and industrial processes, but do not allow to assess carcinogenic potential of the various substances involved in exposures (speciation). Expert judgment combining human and animal data is needed for classifying and labelling of the pure substances. For decision aiding purpose, a method was established for reviewing critically experimental carcinogenesis: 1. Standardized toxicological profiles are established according to pure substances, species, strains and administration routes. 2. Methodological evaluation is made using a scheme based on 3 critical parameters: study duration which should extend to the life expectancy of the species under study; sample size, the statistical significance of negative experiments being ascertained depending on size of samples; survival rates of groups, since sufficient numbers of animals should be at risk during most of their life span. 3. Classification of the results for risk assessment, taking into account the relevance of the administration routes.

The authors report a case of a pelvic site of a Castleman pseudo-tumour, still called angio-follicular hyperplasia or lympho-vascular hamartoma. This disorder of unknown aetiology may be situated anywhere along the lymphatic chains (70% of cases in the mediastinum). It is often associated with immuno-haematological disorders. Suitable for surgical treatment, the course is always favourable.

Intestinal lesions in Hodgkin's disease remain relatively rare. Even rarer are forms in which intestinal lesions or mesenteric nodes remain the only manifestations of the disease for a number of years. In these cases, histological findings are usually less typical than in more usual sites and this explains the diagnostic hesitancy which sometimes occurs. In the case reported here, the diagnosis made and adhered to for four years and despite three successive operations was that of an eosinophilic granuloma of the small intestine.

The inducibility of pulmonary microsomal enzymes and the biological effects of chronic induction by 5-6 benzoflavone and methylcholanthrene were compared in normal and precancerous rats. Two important points were shown out: a dose of 6000 WLM resulted in a permanent modification of the pulmonary microsomal enzymatic pool and 5-6 benzoflavon was a strong co-factor of radiation induced carcinogenesis. This synergistic action was demonstrated by a much shorter latency, moreover neo-formed tissue and epidermoid cancers with a particular morphology were observed. In all the cases cancers appeared within 100 days following the beginning of the chemical treatment.

In a 66-year-old female patient with a past history of tuberculosis, prolonged fever at 38 degrees C accompanied by a strong increase in ESR ultimately led to the diagnosis of renal cyst. Biopsies of renal tissue and of lymph nodes taken during surgery showed renal granulomatosis without caseum. Despite negative bacterial findings and anergy to tuberculin, an anti-tuberculous treatment was administered and the patient recovered.

Early and specific data on the typical calcifications seen in Sturge-Weber's syndrome are provided by computed tomography. The importance of this investigation is emphasized by the fact that standard radiographs and arteriography do not always produce clearcut results--facial angioma, epilepsy, mental retardation, hemiplegia, hemianopsia--the symptomatology can be less evident and even minimal.

A 22 year old woman had a seizure, and the skull X-ray showed an intracranial arched calcification. CT scan permitted diagnosis of dermoid cyst. Rupture of the cyst was testified by low density areas disseminated on the cortical surface and intra-ventricular fat level. Surgical removal confirmed dermoid cyst with rupture and fat fluid inside. Authors underline infrequency of such intra-ventricular fat level. CT scan, with low density of lipidic origin promote considerably such diagnosis both of the real nature of the cyst and of its rupture.
