In order to investigate the changes in soil enzyme activity and their influencing factors in coal mining subsidence areas with high underground water levels, in this study, we collected soil samples at different depths (SL: 0–20 cm; ML: 20–40 cm; DL: 40–60 cm) in a deep coal seam subsidence area (T1), a shallow coal seam subsidence area (T2), and control non-subsidence areas (W1 and W2) in eastern China. Soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities were determined, and the mechanism of the latter's response to coal mining subsidence was investigated based on correlation analysis, redundancy analysis, and structural equation modeling. The results show the following: (1) In the coal mining subsidence areas, the soil pH value (pH), soil available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), and soil organic matter (SOM) contents were lower than those in the non-subsidence areas, while the soil water content (SWC) and bulk density (BD) were higher than those in the non-subsidence areas and increased with depth. (2) The activities of soil urease (URE), sucrase (SUC), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and catalase (CAT) gradually decreased with depth and were all lower than those in the non-subsidence areas; the largest decreases with respect to the latter were 24.33%, 18.73%, 38.89%, and 5.88%, respectively. (3) The soil nutrient environment had a highly significant and direct positive effect on enzyme activity, with AN, AP, and SOM contents having the greatest impact. (4) Soil BD had a highly significant and direct negative effect and an indirect negative effect (by affecting nutrients) on enzyme activity. In order to solve the problem of inconsistent moisture content in particles during the drying process of tiger nuts (Cyperus esculentus) due to uneven air flow and temperature distribution in the drying chamber, an open-hole corner box was designed based on the principle of negative pressure micro-perforated air supply. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) simulation, coupled with the basic theory of interphase heat and mass transfer, a mathematical model for interphase heat and moisture coupling transfer was established. The effects of different aperture rates of corner boxes in the drying chamber, spatial location arrangement, and other related variables on the airfield distribution, temperature field distribution, tiger nut temperature, and moisture content changes were investigated. The results show that the average air velocity below the air inlet gradually increases as the opening ratio increases. When the opening rate is 0.33%, the wind field uniformity is better, and the inhomogeneity of the drying chamber wind field is improved. As the lateral distance increases, the consistency of the moisture content distribution increases and then decreases, and the flow rate of the tiger nuts gradually increases when the grain is discharged. The rate of decrease in water content decreases gradually with the increase in longitudinal distance. When the wind speed reaches 4 m/s, the drying chamber wind field is more uniform, and the water vapor diffusion efficiency at the outlet is basically the same. Therefore, the appropriate corner box has a horizontal distance of 320 mm and a longitudinal distance of 420 mm, providing a basis for the design of tiger nut drying equipment. Guppies are small tropical fish with brightly colored bodies and variable tail shapes. There are two phenotypes of domestic guppy eye color: red and black. The wild type is black-eyed. The main object of this study was to identify candidate genes for the red-eyed phenotype in domestic guppies. We hope to provide molecular genetic information for the development of new domestic guppy strains. Additionally, the results also contribute to basic research concerning guppies. In this study, 121 domestic guppies were used for genomic analysis (GWAS), and 44 genes were identified. Furthermore, 21 domestic guppies were used for transcriptomic analysis, and 874 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 357 upregulated and 517 downregulated genes. Through GO and KEGG enrichment, we identified some important terms or pathways mainly related to melanin biosynthesis and ion transport. qRT-PCR was also performed to verify the differential expression levels of four important candidate genes (TYR, OCA2, SLC45A2, and SLC24A5) between red-eyed and black-eyed guppies. Based on the results of genomic and transcriptomic analyses, we propose that OCA2 is the most important candidate gene for the red-eyed phenotype in guppies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proliferation, apoptosis, and steroid hormone secretion by granulosa cells (GCs) and theca cells (TCs) are essential for maintaining the fate of chicken follicles. Our previous study showed that the Wnt inhibitor factor 1 (WIF1) plays a role in follicle selection. However, the significance of WIF1 in GC- and TC-associated follicular development was not explicitly investigated. This study found that WIF1 expression was strongly downregulated during follicle selection (p < 0.05) and was significantly higher in GCs than in TCs (p < 0.05). WIF1 inhibits proliferation and promotes apoptosis in GCs. Additionally, it promotes progesterone secretion in prehierarchal GCs (pre-GCs, 1.16 ± 0.05 ng/mg vs. 1.58 ng/mg ± 0.12, p < 0.05) and hierarchal GCs (hie-GCs, 395.00 ng/mg ± 34.73 vs. 527.77 ng/mg ± 27.19, p < 0.05) with the participation of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). WIF1 affected canonical Wnt pathways and phosphorylated β-catenin expression in GCs. Furthermore, 604 upregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 360 downregulated DEGs in WIF1-overexpressed GCs were found through RNA-seq analysis (criteria: | log 2 ⁡ (F o l d C h a n g e) | > 1 and p_adj < 0.05). Cytokine–cytokine receptor interaction and the steroid hormone biosynthesis pathway were identified. In addition, the transcript of estrogen receptor 2 (ESR2) increased significantly ( log 2 ⁡ (F o l d C h a n g e) = 1.27, p_adj < 0.05). Furthermore, we found that WIF1 regulated progesterone synthesis by upregulating ESR2 expression in GCs. Additionally, WIF1 suppressed proliferation and promoted apoptosis in TCs. Taken together, these results reveal that WIF1 stimulates follicle development by promoting GC differentiation and progesterone synthesis, which provides an insight into the molecular mechanism of follicle selection and egg-laying performance in poultry. Simple Summary: n-3 PUFA, selenium and lutein cannot be synthesized in the human body, but these substances are very important for human health. Consuming functional eggs enriched with nutrients can increase the body's intake of these substances. To efficiently produce functional eggs, selecting breeds that can deposit higher levels of these nutrients is necessary. Therefore, we investigated the types, dosages, and cycles of additives used in the production of functional eggs. In Trial 1, we investigated the differences in n-3 PUFA deposition among five breeds of eggs. The results showed significant variations in the ability of different breeds to deposit n-3 PUFA in eggs, with Dwarf Layer demonstrating a significant advantage. In Trial 2, we investigated the difference of n-3 PUFA, selenium and lutein deposition in eggs from two reeds in terms of their ability to deposit selenium and lutein in eggs. Additionally, the n-3 PUFA content in eggs from the two breeds was similar to the findings in Trial 1. Therefore, this experiment provides valuable insights for selecting different breeds in the production of functional eggs, ultimately improving the quality and economic benefits of the production process. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in the content of functional nutrients in eggs, performance parameters, and egg quality parameters of different chicken breeds. In Trial 1, 150 41-week-old hens of each breed, including the Dwarf Layer, White Leghorn, Silky fowl, Beijing-you chicken, and Shouguang chicken, were randomly assigned to the control (CON) and 2.5% flaxseed oil (FSO) groups to compare the difference in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content in eggs. The contents of α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and total n-3 PUFA in eggs were increased (p < 0.05) in the FSO groups. The ALA (4.28%), DHA (2.03%), and total n-3 PUFA (6.46%) contents in eggs of Dwarf Layer were the highest among the five breeds (p < 0.05). To further verify if other functional nutrients also have such differences, 600 24-week-old White Leghorn and Dwarf Layer were allocated to four groups: CON, FSO, 0.02% selenium-enriched yeast (SEY), and 0.20% marigold flower extract (MFE), in Trial 2. The content of functional nutrients in eggs was significantly increased (p < 0.05) after feeding these additions. After feeding FSO, the eggs of the Dwarf Layer had a higher n-3 PUFA content than the White Leghorn (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were found in selenium and lutein content in different breeds. Performance and egg quality were not negatively impacted by FSO, SEY, or MFE. The sorghum–sudangrass hybrid is the main high-quality forage grass in Southwest China, but, in recent years, it has suffered from leaf spot disease, with a prevalence of 88% in Bazhong, Sichuan, China, seriously affecting yield and quality. The causal agents were obtained from symptomatic leaves by tissue isolation and verified by pathogenicity assays. A combination of morphological characterization and sequence analysis revealed that strains SCBZSL1, SCBZSX5, and SCBZSW6 were Nigrospora sphaerica, Colletotrichum boninense, and Didymella corylicola, respectively, and the latter two were the first instance to be reported on sorghum–sudangrass hybrids in the world. SCBZSX5 significantly affected the growth of the plants, which can reduce plant height by 25%. The biological characteristics of SCBZSX5 were found to be less sensitive to the change in light and pH, and its most suitable culture medium was Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), with the optimal temperature of 25 °C and lethal temperature of 35 °C. To clarify the interactions between the pathogen SCBZSX5 and plants, metabolomics analyses revealed that 211 differential metabolites were mainly enriched in amino acid metabolism and flavonoid metabolism. C. boninense disrupted the osmotic balance of the plant by decreasing the content of acetyl proline and caffeic acid in the plant, resulting in disease occurrence, whereas the sorghum–sudangrass hybrids improved tolerance and antioxidant properties through the accumulation of tyrosine, tryptophan, glutamic acid, leucine, glycitein, naringenin, and apigetrin to resist the damage caused by C. boninense. Translucent egg consumption is low due to consumer acceptance and quality concerns, which is a problem that egg producers need to address. This study was performed to evaluate the reasons for the high occurrence of egg translucency in summer, as well as whether the addition of mono-dicalcium phosphate (MDCP) to the diet can relieve eggshell translucency and whether eggshell translucency is associated with the risk of bacterial invasion. A total of 72 laying hens that were 36 weeks old were randomly divided into control (CON) and MDCP groups and fed in the same environment. Results showed that the number of translucent eggs increases in July and August as the temperature and humidity increase. Compared with the CON group, in July, August, and October, the translucent egg grade (TEG) of the MDCP group was lower than that of the CON group (p < 0.05). TEG was correlated with mastoid space height (MSH), width (MSW), and area (MSA) (correlation coefficients 0.63, 0.59, and 0.68, respectively, p ≤ 0.05). There was no significant difference in the invasion rate of E. coli between translucent and non-translucent egg groups (47.2% vs. 39.33%), and translucent area and non-translucent area (13.49% vs. 15.08%). In conclusion, our results show that dietary MDCP may alleviate eggshell translucency and that eggshell translucency would not increase the probability of E. coli cross-shell penetration rate. Simple Summary: Autosexing based on sex-linked phenotypes of late feathering (LF) and early feathering (EF) was widely used in poultry production. Previous studies found that tandem duplication on the Z chromosome is responsible for LF. In this study, based on tandem duplication, we developed a multiplex PCR test for genotyping through reaction optimization. The genotyping result for feathering rate with the multiplex PCR test was consistent with the sex and phenotype records, and the result of homozygote and heterozygote tests of LF males were verified by test cross and tallied with offspring's phenotypes. The multiplex PCR test is stable and accurate for feathering rate genotyping, applicable to all LF chickens associated with tandem duplication, and has great significance for poultry breeding. Sex-linked phenotypes of late feathering (LF) and early feathering (EF) are controlled by a pair of alleles K and k+. Autosexing based on the feathering rate is widely used in poultry production. It is reported that a tandem duplication of 176,324 base pairs linked to the K locus is responsible for LF expression and could be used as a molecular marker to detect LF chicken. So far, there is no genotyping method that can accurately and stably identify the LF homozygote and heterozygote in all chicken breeds. In the present study, a multiplex PCR test was developed to identify EF, LF homozygote, and heterozygote according to electrophoretic bands and the relative height of the peaks by Sanger sequencing. We tested 413 chickens of six native Chinese breeds with this method. The identification was consistent with the sex and phenotype records of the chickens. Band density analysis was performed, and the results supported our genotyping using the new assay. In order to further verify the accuracy of this test in distinguishing homozygote and heterozygote males, 152 LF males were mated with EF females, and the results of the offspring's phenotypes were consistent with our expectations. The Luxi gamecock developed very unique morphological and behavioral features under the special artificial selection of the most famous Chinese gamecocks. There are very few research studies on the genetics and selection of the Luxi gamecock. We used six methods (Fst, Tajima's D, hapFLK, iHS, XP-EHH, and Runs of homozygosity) to detect selective sweeps in whole-genome resequencing data of 19 Luxi gamecocks compared to other Chinese indigenous chickens. Eleven genes that were highly related to nervous system development (CDH18, SLITRK1, SLITRK6, NDST3, ATP23, LRIG3, IL1RAPL1, GADL1, C5orf22, UGT8, WISP1, and WNT9A) appeared in at least four methods and were regarded as the most significant genes under selection. Differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis based on the RNA sequencing data of the cerebral cortex and middle brain between six Luxi gamecocks, Tibetan chickens, and white leghorns found that most differentially expressed genes were enriched in pathways with nervous system functions. Genes associated with aggressiveness-related neurotransmitters (SLC4A2, DRD1, DRD2, ADRA2A, and ADRA2B) showed differential expression rates in Luxi gamecocks as well. Combined results showed that most genes in selective sweep regions were also differentially expressed in Luxi gamecocks including the most significant genes (SLITRK6, IL1RAPL1, GADL1, WISP1, and LRIG3). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has been causing a worldwide pandemic since 2019. Many vaccines have been manufactured and have shown promising results in reducing disease morbidity and mortality. However, a variety of vaccine-related adverse effects, including hematological events, have been reported, such as thromboembolic events, thrombocytopenia, and bleeding. Moreover, a new syndrome, vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, following vaccination against COVID-19 has been recognized. These hematologic side effects have also raised concerns about SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with preexisting hematologic conditions. Patients with hematological tumors are at a higher risk of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the efficacy and safety of vaccination in this group remain uncertain and have raised attention. Simple Summary: Cage size is an essential environmental factor affecting the well-being and performance of hens and thus it is necessary to determine the extent of its contribution. The present study investigated the effects of four different-sized cages, i.e., huge, large, medium, and small cages, on the productive performance, serum biochemical indices, and caecal microbiota composition of Roman laying hens. The results indicated that enlarging cage size has some positive effects on the productive performance, lipid metabolism, and antioxidant capacity of laying hens, while medium cages were superior to large cages in feed conversion efficiency and caecal microflora composition. The effects of four different-sized cages—huge (HC), large (LC), medium (MC), and small (SC) cages—on the productive performance, serum biochemical indices, and caecal microbiota composition of Roman laying hens were investigated. At 44 weeks of age, a total of 450 hens were selected and allocated to the four groups, with six replicates each. Equal stocking density (0.054 m2 per bird) was maintained among the four groups throughout the experiment, and number of birds/cage changed for each treatment. After 2 weeks of preliminary trial, the formal experiment was performed from 46 to 60 weeks of age. The laying rate and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined daily, antibody titres were measured every 3 weeks, and serum biochemical parameters and caecal microbiota composition were analysed at 60 weeks of age. Compared to HC and SC, the higher laying rate and lower FCR in MC and LC indicated positive effects on egg production and feed efficiency, while SC showed the highest body weight gain (p < 0.05). With increasing cage size, the serum triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (T-CH) levels were reduced, and serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity improved, where birds raised in HCs had the lowest serum TG and T-CH and the highest GSH-Px activity. Twenty-nine different phyla and 301 different genera were detected in the caecal microbiota of birds in the four groups. Methanobrevibacter was significantly higher in the SC than in the other groups (p < 0.05). Faecalibacterium was most abundant in the MC compared with the other groups (p < 0.05) and was significantly positively correlated with serum GSH-Px concentration (R = 0.214, p = 0.0017). Lactobacillus was significantly less abundant in the LC and MC than in the HC and SC groups (p < 0.05) and was significantly positively correlated with body weight (R = 0.350, p = 0.0009) but negatively correlated with laying rate and FCR. In conclusion, MC were superior to HC and LC in improving feed conversion efficiency and caecal microflora composition compared to the SC. This paper investigates the effects of the machining process on the thrust force and mechanical characteristics for the direct drive feed system driven by the flat permanent magnet synchronous linear motor (PMSLM) in machine tools considering the electromechanical couplings. Firstly, the cutting force in the machining process is researched. Then, the analytical model of the direct drive feed system is established and analyzed. The electromechanical couplings between the mechanical system and servo system in the direct drive feed system are studied. Furthermore, the influences of the cutting force on different couplings are analyzed, and the thrust force characteristic is analytically represented. Finally, the validity of the theoretical analysis is verified by the experiments, and the effects of the machining process on the dynamic precision of the feed system are discussed. The results show that the electromechanical couplings in the direct drive system will aggravate the effects of the machining process on the thrust force and mechanical characteristics of the feed system. A large number of new paired thrust harmonics will be produced. The influence of the machining process on the mechanical system will be extended from the discrete frequency point caused by the cutting force to the approximate frequency band caused by the thrust force, affecting the dynamic precision of the feed system and the cutting stability of the machine tool. The positive effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on professional sports organizations' (PSO) sustainable development have been studied in developed markets, e.g., the major four leagues in North America. To assess if CSR has similar effects on the emerging market, this study collected 373 questionnaires among the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) fans. The descriptive statistical results verified consumers' positive responses to CSR in their favorite clubs in enhancing their team identification, loyalty, and purchase intentions of game tickets. There existed a strong relationship between team identifications and the clubs' sustainable development. However, the results of the structural equation modelling indicated that the relationship between CSR and the clubs' sustainable development was weak. The results indicated that fans generally considered a CBA team's CSR effort as important, but the importance was not proportional to CSR-related team identification or the clubs' sustainable development. Moreover, the lack of structural validity within each construct calls for more research frameworks and questionnaire designs for CSR investigations in the context of the emerging market. The practical implication of this study was that clubs with financial difficulties were only suggested to do what they could afford to do in CSR activities rather than get involved more than they could bear. The basic units of skeletal muscle in all vertebrates are multinucleate myofibers, which are formed from the fusion of mononuclear myoblasts during the embryonic period. In order to understand the regulation of embryonic muscle development, we selected four chicken breeds, namely, Cornish (CN), White Plymouth Rock (WPR), White Leghorn (WL), and Beijing-You Chicken (BYC), for evaluation of their temporal expression patterns of known key regulatory genes (Myomaker, MYOD, and MSTN) during pectoral muscle (PM) and thigh muscle (TM) development. The highest expression level of Myomaker occurred from embryonic days E13 to E15 for all breeds, indicating that it was the crucial stage of myoblast fusion. Interestingly, the fast-growing CN showed the highest gene expression level of Myomaker during the crucial stage. The MYOD gene expression at D1 was much higher, implying that MYOD might have an important role after hatching. Histomorphology of PM and TM suggested that the myofibers was largely complete at E17, which was speculated to have occurred because of the expression increase in MSTN and the expression decrease in Myomaker. Feather colors of chickens are not only characteristics of breeds but also as phenotypic markers in chicken breeding. Pure-bred Rhode Island Red (RIR) chicks have a stripe pattern and a non-stripe pattern on the back. The stripe pattern of RIR is generally shown as four longitudinal black stripes on the back and is more likely to appear in females. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify candidate genes controlling the stripe pattern of RIR chicks, and then, based on physical location and biological functions, quantitative RT-PCR analysis was used to validate the differential expression of candidate genes between stripe pattern and non-stripe pattern back skin tissue. The GWAS showed that a major signal contains 768 significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 87 significant small insertions-deletions (INDELs) spanning 41.78 to 43.05 Mb (~1.27 Mb) on GGA1, corresponding to 16 genes associated with stripe pattern phenotype. Among these 16 genes, KITLG and TMTC3 could be considered candidate genes as they showed different expressions between back skin tissues of stripe pattern and non-stripe pattern chicks in value (p = 0.062) and the significant level (p < 0.05), respectively. Solar-driven steam generation for desalination is a facile, sustainable, and energy-saving approach to produce clean freshwater. However, the complicated fabrication process, high cost, potential environmental impact, and salt crystallization of conventional evaporators limit their large-scale application. Herein, we present a sustainable Janus evaporator based on a biopolymer sponge from the water hyacinth petiole (WHP) for high-performance solar steam generation. The freeze-dried WHP maintained its original porous structure and aligned channels well, and therefore holds the capability for rapid water transport due to strong capillary action. The WHP coated with carbon nanotubes/ethyl cellulose paste on its surface (WHP-C) gains a good photothermal property, thus achieving an efficient solar steam generation with a rate of 1.50 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 sun irradiation. Moreover, the WHP-C after hydrophobic modification by fluorocarbon (WHP-CH) is endowed with high water repellency and exhibits good salt resistance during long-term solar desalination. Additionally, we demonstrate that a stable wet surface that enables efficient water supply and vapor escape is also significant to the successive desalination of a solar evaporator. Our work provides new insights into the high-value utilization of biomass waste, i.e., water hyacinth, and the development of sustainable interfacial solar evaporators for the environmentally friendly production of freshwater. This study evaluated the effects of three polysaccharides, xanthan gum (XG), kappa-carrageenan (CA), and guar gum (GG), on the foaming and emulsifying properties of egg white liquid (EWL) and explored the intermolecular interactions and aggregation states in the initial polysaccharide–EWL complex. The results showed that the addition of XG and GG significantly improved the foaming stability of EWL on the one hand, from 66% to 78% and 69%, respectively (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the addition of XG and GG significantly improved the foam uniformity and density, and the average foam area decreased from 0.127 to 0.052 and 0.022 mm2, respectively (p < 0.05). The addition of XG and CA significantly improved the emulsification activity index (from 13.32 to 14.58 and 14.36 m2/mg, respectively, p < 0.05) and the emulsion stability index (from 50.89 to 53.62 and 52.18 min, respectively, p < 0.05), as well as the interfacial protein adsorption at the oil–water interface; it also reduced the creaming index. However, GG negatively affected these indicators. Furthermore, the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions among molecules in EWL due to XG and the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions among molecules in EWL due to CA ultimately led to the irregular aggregation of egg white proteins. Hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds between molecules in EWL–containing GG formed filamentous aggregations of egg white proteins. This work reveals that molecules in the polysaccharide–egg white complexes aggregate by interaction forces, which in turn have different effects on the foaming and emulsifying properties of egg white proteins. The mid-infrared (MIR, 2–20 μm) waveband is of great interest for integrated photonics in many applications such as on-chip spectroscopic chemical sensing, and optical communication. Thermo-optic switches are essential to large-scale integrated photonic circuits at MIR wavebands. However, current technologies require a thick cladding layer, high driving voltages or may introduce high losses in MIR wavelengths, limiting the performance. This paper has demonstrated thermo-optic (TO) switches operating at 2 μm by integrating graphene onto silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structures. The remarkable thermal and optical properties of graphene make it an excellent heater material platform. The lower loss of graphene at MIR wavelength can reduce the required cladding thickness for the thermo-optics phase shifter from micrometers to tens of nanometers, resulting in a lower driving voltage and power consumption. The modulation efficiency of the microring resonator (MRR) switch was 0.11 nm/mW. The power consumption for 8-dB extinction ratio was 5.18 mW (0.8 V modulation voltage), and the rise/fall time was 3.72/3.96 μs. Furthermore, we demonstrated a 2 × 2 Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) TO switch with a high extinction ratio of more than 27 dB and a switching rise/fall time of 4.92/4.97 μs. A comprehensive analysis of the device performance affected by the device structure and the graphene Fermi level was also performed. The theoretical figure of merit (2.644 mW−1μs−1) of graphene heaters is three orders of magnitude higher than that of metal heaters. Cordycepin, extracted from the medicinal mushroom Cordyceps militaris, was shown to induce cancer cell apoptosis. Yet its anticancer function was limitedly evaluated, and the mechanism was not entirely elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated the effectiveness of cordycepin in inducing apoptosis in HeLa cells and investigated its apoptosis-inducing mechanism through label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). SERS spectral changes revealed detailed molecular changes in both early and late stages of apoptosis. Importantly, SERS characteristic peaks at 805 and 1438 cm−1, which were assigned to RNA, continued to decrease significantly from early to late apoptosis stages. It indicated that cordycepin induced HeLa cell apoptosis mainly through interfering with RNA production, potentially by restraining the translation of RNA encoding ribosomal proteins. Meanwhile, apoptotic cells and their apoptosis stage could be easily differentiated by SERS-based principal component analysis (PCA). Furthermore, the morphological changes of early and late-stage apoptotic cells were illustrated by differential interference contrast and fluorescence microscopic imaging. Therefore, the natural ingredient, cordycepin, could serve as a promising anticancer candidate. Our biological model of cell apoptosis in vitro, the non-invasive and rapid SERS technique, combined with PCA analysis, could be a powerful tool in the investigation of cell apoptosis mechanisms and anticancer drug screening. In order to access the fretting damage of the steam generator tube (SGT), a fast fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) non-scanning correlation demodulation system based on a super luminescent light emitting diode (SLED) was performed. By demodulating the light signal coming out from the F-P force sensor, the radial collision force between the SGT and the tube support plate (TSP) was interrogated. For higher demodulation accuracy, the effects of the center wavelength, bandwidth, and spectrum noise of SLED were discussed in detail. Specially, a piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT) modulation method was developed to get rid of the interference of mode coupling induced by different types of fiber optics in the demodulation system. The reflectivity of optical wedge and F-P sensor was optimized. Finally, the demodulation system worked well in a 1:1 steam generator test loop and successfully demodulated a force signal of 32 N with a collision time of 2 ms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on trimethylamine (TMA) in egg yolk have focused on how it impacts the flavor of eggs, but there has been little focus on its other functions. We designed an in vitro antibacterial test of TMA according to TMA concentrations that covered the TMA contents typically found in egg yolk. The change in TMA content in yolk was analyzed at different storage temperatures and for different storage durations. The known antibacterial components of eggs, including the cuticle quality of the eggshell and the lysozyme activity and content in egg white, were also assessed. The total bacterial count (TBC) of different parts of eggs were detected. The results showed that the inhibitory effect of TMA on Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth increased with increasing TMA concentration, and the yolk TMA content significantly increased with storage duration (p < 0.05). The cuticle quality and lysozyme content and activity significantly decreased with storage time and increasing temperature, accompanied by a significant increase in the TBC on the eggshell surface and in the egg white (p < 0.05). This work reveals a new role for trace TMA in yolks because it reduces the risk of bacterial colonization, especially when the antibacterial function of eggs is gradually weakened during storage. The interlayer coupler is one of the critical building blocks for optical interconnect based on multilayer photonic integration to realize light coupling between stacked optical waveguides. However, commonly used coupling strategies, such as evanescent field coupling, usually require a close distance, which could cause undesired interlayer crosstalk. This work presents a novel interlayer slope waveguide coupler based on a multilayer chalcogenide glass photonic platform, enabling light to be directly guided from one layer to another with a large interlayer gap (1 µm), a small footprint (6 × 1 × 0.8 µm3), low propagation loss (0.2 dB at 1520 nm), low device processing temperature, and a high bandwidth, similar to that in a straight waveguide. Simple Summary: The lipid deposition and health status of egg-laying hens is crucial to the development of the poultry industry. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of genetic variations in the flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) on the lipid metabolic diseases of laying hens during the late laying period. The results showed that the T329S mutation in FMO3 moderated the lipid parameters and decreased the atherosclerotic lesions and hepatic steatosis in laying hens with homozygous T329S mutation. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the T329S mutation in FMO3 on lipid metabolism in chickens during the late laying period. We selected 18 FMO3 genotyped individuals (consisting of six AA, six AT, and six TT hens) with similar body weight and production performance. The lipid metabolism and deposition characteristics of the laying hens with different genotypes were compared. The T329S mutation moderated the serum-lipid parameters in TT hens compared to those in AA and AT hens from 49 to 62 weeks. Furthermore, it reduced the serum trimethylamine N-oxide concentrations and increased the serum total bile acid (p < 0.05) and related lipid transporter levels in TT hens. Moreover, it significantly (p < 0.01) decreased atherosclerotic lesions and hepatic steatosis in TT hens compared to those in the AA and AT hens. Simple Summary: With the increased interest in animal welfare, poultry housing systems have been a concern for the last decade, and conventional cages have been replaced by non-cage systems or enriched cages. However, the environmental conditions in non-cage housing systems and their association with hens' production performance and health have not been studied extensively. Therefore, the present study compared the indoor environmental microbial content in two different non-caged systems, namely, a plastic-net housing system and floor-litter housing system, and investigated its effects on the production performance, serum parameters and intestinal morphology of hens during the peak laying period. The results indicated that the NRS resulted in better indoor environmental air quality and ground hygiene than the LRS and enhanced the production performance, antioxidant capacity and intestinal health of hens, represented by positive changes in the laying rate, serum parameters and intestinal morphology. This study investigated the effects of plastic-net housing system (NRS) and floor-litter housing system (LRS) on the production performance, serum parameters and intestinal morphology of Shendan laying hens. A total of 1200 30-week-old hens were randomly allocated to the NRS and LRS groups, each of which included five replicates with 120 chickens in each replicate. The experiment was conducted from 32 to 40 weeks of age. Indoor airborne parameters were measured every 2 weeks, and indoor ground contamination was measured monthly. The laying rate and mortality of hens were recorded daily, and egg quality traits and serum parameters were measured every 2 weeks. At 40 weeks of age, four birds per replicate from each experimental group were selected for intestinal morphological observation. The results showed that the airborne bacteria number in the LRS was significantly higher than that in the NRS (p < 0.05) for most of the experimental period (except at 32 and 38 weeks of age), and the bacterial numbers on the surfaces of the floor and floor eggs in the LRS were approximately 10 times higher than those in the NRS (p < 0.05). Compared with the LRS, the NRS improved the laying rate (p < 0.05), reduced serum malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05) and corticosterone (CORT) concentrations and increased serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, indicating favourable effects on antioxidative status. The NRS was significantly associated with an increased villus height (VH), villus height to crypt depth ratio (VCR) in the small intestine (p < 0.05) and increased VCR in the caecum (p < 0.05). Overall, the lower rate of bacterial contamination in the NRS than in the LRS indicated better environmental hygiene. The NRS enhanced the laying performance and antioxidant capacity of hens and was superior to the LRS in improving intestinal health. It is generally believed that a pellet diet has a positive effect on chicken growth, but there are some studies that have reported no difference between pellet and mash on chicken's performance. The present study indicated that pellet diets improved the production performance and nutrition metabolism through positive changes in the laying rate, feed intake, egg albumen quality and apparent digestibility of laying hens. One of the most important factors that determine feed utilization by chickens is the feed form. Although it is generally believed that pellet diets have a positive effect on chicken growth, there are some studies that have indicated no difference between pellet and mash on chickens performance. This study was conducted to assess the effects of feed form on production performance, egg quality, nutrient metabolism and intestinal morphology in two breed laying hens. Two hundred and sixteen 25-week-old Hy-Line brown (n = 108) and Hy-Line grey (n = 108) hens were selected. Each breed was randomly allocated into two treatments with 6 replications (9 birds in each replication), which were fed mash and pellet diets, respectively. Production performances were recorded daily and egg quality traits were measured every two weeks. At 42 weeks of age, one bird per replication from each experimental group was selected for metabolism determination and intestine morphology observation. Compared with mash diets, pellet diets improved laying rate (p < 0.05), ADFI (average daily feed intake, p < 0.05), egg weight, shell strength, yolk proportion and Haugh unit (p < 0.05) in both breeds and reduced the FCR (feed conversion ratio, p < 0.05) in Hy-Line grey. The apparent digestibility of DM% (dry matter) and CP% (crude protein) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in both breed laying hens fed pellet than those fed mash. The apparent digestibility of P% (phosphorus) and Ca% (calcium) was higher in Hy-Line grey fed pellet and was higher in Hy-Line brown fed mash. Compared to mash diets, pellet diets increased the VH (villus height), CD (crypt depth) and VCR (ratio of villus height to crypt depth) of the small intestine of Hy-Line grey, and increased the VH and CD of duodenum and ileum of Hy-Line brown. Overall, pellet diets improved production performance and nutrition metabolism through positive changes in the laying rate, feed intake, egg albumen quality and apparent digestibility of laying hens. Dwarfism is a condition defined by low harvest weight in fish, but also results in strange body figures which may have potential for the selective breeding of new ornamental fish strains. The objectives of this study are to reveal the physiological causes of dwarfism and identify the genetic loci controlling this trait in the white sailfin molly. Skeletons of dwarf and normal sailfin mollies were observed by X-ray radioscopy and skeletal staining. Genome-wide association studies based on genotyping-by-sequencing (n = 184) were used to map candidate genomic regions associated with the dwarfism trait. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed to determine the expression level of candidate genes in normal (n = 8) and dwarf (n = 8) sailfin mollies. We found that the dwarf sailfin molly has a short and dysplastic spine in comparison to the normal fish. Two regions, located at NW_015112742.1 and NW_015113621.1, were significantly associated with the dwarfism trait. The expression level of three candidate genes, ADAMTS like 1, Larp7 and PPP3CA, were significantly different between the dwarf and normal sailfin mollies in the hepatopancreas, with PPP3CA also showing significant differences in the vertebrae and Larp7 showing significant differences in the muscle. This study identified genomic regions and candidate genes associated with the dwarfism trait in the white sailfin molly and would provide a reference to determine dwarf-causing variations. Current landscape design within a courtyard usually does not take into account the influence of the tree-planting pattern, which has an important influence on the outdoor microclimate and occupants' thermal comfort. At present, the extent of the influence on the microclimate has not yet been made clear. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was employed to run this model under hot summer weather conditions. Field measurements validated the performance of the CFD model. This study conducted numerical simulations for five different tree-planting patterns, including (i) focused tree-planting (F), (ii) cornered tree-planting (C), (iii) multi-row tree-planting (R), (iv) surround tree-planting (S) and (v) no tree-planting (N). Our study found that the tree-planting pattern affects both the distribution of air temperature and the degree of local heat transfer. Specifically, the C, S and N patterns allow for higher ventilation in the studied courtyard, while the F and R patterns cause lower wind velocities and associated courtyard ventilation. The average air temperature for the C pattern is lower during summer afternoons than the other patterns. The wind flow pattern in the studied courtyard does not vary significantly with different tree-planting patterns. Nevertheless, the general relative humidity in the courtyard does not vary significantly with different tree-planting patterns, except for the N pattern.
