Recently, thermal regulators based on adsorption in a heat pipe have been proposed. The advantage of these so-called "switchpipes" over similar approaches is their low on state thermal resistance. In this paper, we propose a methodology to calculate and adjust the activation temperature of such switchpipes. For this purpose, we use a mass balance-based model that considers both the heat transfer properties of the heat pipe itself, which depend on the amount of working fluid, and the adsorption equilibrium of the adsorbent used. This model can be used not only to describe the activation behavior of a given heat pipe but also to optimize the configuration of a heat pipe for specific operating conditions and to select appropriate adsorbents. In this paper, we also propose definitions for basic indicators of the activation properties of the heat pipe, such as the activation temperature and the activation temperature span. Finally, a simplified calculation method is presented that allows the selection of the correct adsorbent among all adsorbents with Type IV and Type V adsorption isotherms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An air-conditioning system (ACS), which consumes large amounts of high-grade energy, is essential for maintaining the indoor thermal environment of modern buildings. However, an ACS consumes almost half of the total energy of the building. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the energy consumption of the ACS to promote energy conservation and emission reduction in the building sector. In fact, there is an abundance of waste heat and low-grade energies with the potential to be utilized in ACS in nature, but many of them are not utilized efficiently or cannot be utilized at all due to the low efficiency of thermal energy conversion. Known as a passive thermal transfer device, the application of a heat pipe (HP) in the ACS has shown explosive growth in recent years. HPs have been demonstrated to be an effective method for reducing building cooling and heating demands and energy consumption in ACS with experimental and simulation methods. This paper summarizes the different HP types applied in the ACS and provides brief insight into the performance enhancement of the ACS integrated with HP. Four types of HPs, namely tubular HP (THP), loop HP (LHP), pulsating HP (PHP) and flat HP (FHP), are presented. Their working principles and scope of applications are reviewed. Then, HPs used in natural cooling system, split air conditioner (SAC), centralized ACS (CACS) and cooling terminal devices are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the heat transfer characteristics and energy savings of the above systems are critically analyzed. The results show that the performance of the HP is greatly affected by its own structure, working fluid and external environmental conditions. The energy saving of ACS coupled with HP is 3–40.9%. The payback period of this system ranges from 1.9–10 years. It demonstrates that the HP plays a significant role in reducing ACS energy consumption and improving indoor thermal comfort. Achieving the global electricity demand and meeting the United Nations sustainable development target on reliable and sustainable energy supply by 2050 are crucial. Portable energy storage (PES) units, powered by solid-state battery cells, can offer a sustainable and cost-effective solution for regions with limited power-grid access. However, operating in high-dust and high-temperature environments presents challenges that require effective thermal management solutions. This paper is a comprehensive review of thermal management systems for PES units, with a specific focus on addressing the challenge of overheating in airtight designs. The review of various active and passive cooling systems is conducted through extensive study of the relevant literature, which is significant in providing insights into the operation, performance parameters, and design options for different cooling system technologies. The findings from this review show heat pipe (HP) technologies as key cooling-system solutions for airtight PES units. Specifically, loop and oscillating HPs, as well as the vapour chamber, offer desirable features such as compactness, low cost, and high thermal conductivity that make them superior to other alternatives for the cooling systems in PES. The insights and knowledge generated via this review will help facilitate the design and development of innovative, efficient, and reliable PES units, thereby contributing to the advancement of off-grid renewable energy applications and enabling sustainable power solutions worldwide. Various types of heat pipes are available to purchase off the shelf, from various manufacturers, but most of them have strictly defined geometry and technical parameters. However, when there is a need to use a heat pipe (HP) with an unusual size and shape or working conditions other than the standard ones, it becomes very costly to order them from manufacturers, especially in small quantities, and only a few producers are willing to fulfill such an order. This paper presents a detailed description and step-by-step method of manufacturing and testing a low-cost HP with specific properties and geometry, cooperating with a modular heat recovery system based on the use of phase change materials (PCM) for electromobility applications. The presented heat pipes were made entirely by hand, primarily with the use of basic workshop tools, without the use of specialized and automated CNC machines. Utensils used during the process were either made by hand or using desktop FDM 3D printers. During the evaluation of heat pipes' performance within PCM (coconut oil), simple statistical functions were used. One-dimensional and two-dimensional histograms were used to visualize data obtained during this research. The presented method allows the manufacturing of heat pipes that are, on average, able to melt about 35% more PCM than an empty copper pipe with the exact same geometry. Thermal switches contribute to efficient and safe thermal management of components and overall systems in various technical applications by actively controlling heat transfer in response to varying thermal loads and ambient conditions. Heat pipes are passive heat transfer devices constituting an integral part of various thermal management systems such as in spacecraft or consumer electronics thermal control. Heat pipes also form a promising approach for thermal switches due to their high effective thermal conductivity. In this paper, a wickless copper-water heat pipe based thermal switch with an electromagnetic linear actuator is presented. The magnetically actuated motion of a plunger integrated into the heat pipe affects the latent heat transport cycle leading to a switchable heat transfer. Thermal measurements conducted to determine the total thermal resistance of the heat pipe demonstrate the efficacy of the thermal switch. It was found that the thermal resistance of the heat pipe was increased by up to 53% in off state while the heat pipe performance in on state was not significantly affected by the integrated mechanism. A sintered wick was formed in a heat pipe through the process of sintering a mixture of copper powder with particle sizes of 100 µm and 200 µm, mixed with a pore-forming agent. The heat pipe's thermal resistance, which affects its heat transfer efficiency, is determined during manufacturing according to the powder type, thickness of the sintered wick, and filling rate of the working fluid. Heat transfer efficiency was then tested at various inclination angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) to evaluate the performance of heat pipes. Regardless of the filling amount and test angle, the 200 μm copper powder type exhibited superior heat transfer efficiency compared to the 100 μm type. After analyzing heat transfer performance at various filling rates between 20% and 50%, it was determined that the heat pipe's optimal heat transfer capability occurred at a working fluid filling rate of 30%. This paper presents an analysis of methods to increase the efficiency of heat transfer in heat exchangers. The scope of the research included analysis of efficiency optimization using the example of two tubular heat exchanger structures most often used in industry. The obtained efficiency of heat recovery from the ground of the examined exchangers was over 90%, enabling the reduction of emissions of the heating systems of buildings. The paper presents the results of tests of two types of heat pipes using R134A, R404A, and R407C working agents. The paper also presents the results of experimental tests using the R410A working medium. The results included in the study will also enable the effective use of land as a heat store. Lithium-ion batteries, crucial in powering Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), face critical challenges in maintaining safety and efficiency. The quest for an effective Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) arises from critical concerns over the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries, particularly in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). This study introduces a pioneering BTMS solution merging a two-phase immersion cooling system with heat pipes. Notably, the integration of NovecTM 649 as the dielectric fluid substantially mitigates thermal runaway-induced fire risks without requiring an additional power source. Comprehensive 1-D modeling, validated against AMESim (Advanced Modeling Environment for Simulation of Engineering Systems) simulations and experiments, investigates diverse design variable impacts on thermal resistance and evaporator temperature. At 10 W, 15 W, and 20 W heat inputs, the BTMS consistently maintained lithium-ion battery temperatures within the optimal range (approximately 27–34 °C). Optimized porosity (60%) and filling ratios (30–40%) minimized thermal resistance to 0.3848–0.4549 °C/W. This innovative system not only enhances safety but also improves energy efficiency by reducing weight, affirming its potential to revolutionize lithium-ion battery performance and address critical challenges in the field. With the development of microsatellite technology, the heat generated by onboard components is increasing, leading to a growing demand for improved thermal dissipation in small satellites. Metal powder additive manufacturing technology offers the possibility of customizing and miniaturizing heat pipes to meet the specific requirements of small satellites. This article introduces a small-scale heat pipe designed using selective laser melting (SLM) technology. The heat pipe's material, structure, and internal working fluid were determined based on mission requirements. Subsequently, the SolidWorks 2021 software was used for heat pipe modeling, and the ANSYS 2021R2 finite element analysis software was employed to simulate the heat transfer performance of the designed heat pipe, confirming its feasibility. The heat pipe's structure was optimized using multi-objective regression analysis, considering various structural parameters, such as the channel diameter, vapor chamber height, and narrow gap width. The simulation results demonstrate that the optimized heat pipe achieved a 10.5% reduction in thermal resistance and an 11.6% increase in equivalent thermal conductivity compared to the original heat pipe. Furthermore, compared to conventional metal heat-conducting rods, the optimized heat pipe showed a 38.5% decrease in thermal resistance and a 62.19% increase in equivalent thermal conductivity. The heat pipe was then fabricated using a 3D printer (EOS M280), and a vacuum experimental system was established to investigate its heat transfer characteristics. The experimental results show that the heat pipe operated most efficiently at a heating power of 20 W, reached its maximum heat transfer capacity at 22 W, and had an optimal fill ratio of 30%. The thin-wall heat pipe is an efficient heat transfer component that has been widely used in the field of heat dissipation of high-power electronic equipment in recent years. In this study, the orange peel morphology defect of thin-wall heat pipes after bending deformation was analyzed both for the macro-3D profile and for the micro-formation mechanism. The morphology and crystal orientations of the grains and annealing twins were carefully characterized utilizing optical metallography and the electron backscatter diffraction technique. The results show that after high-temperature sintering treatment, the matrix grains of the heat pipe are seriously coarsened and form a strong Goss texture, while certain annealing twins with the unique copper orientation are retained. The distribution of the Schmid factor value subjected to the uniaxial stress indicates that inhomogeneity in the intergranular deformation exists among the annealing twins and matrix grains. The annealing twin exhibits a "hard-oriented" component during the deformation; thus, it plays a role as a barrier and hinders the slipping of dislocation. As the strain accumulates, part of the annealing twins may protrude from the surface of the heat pipe, forming a large-scale fluctuation of the surface as the so-called "orange peel" morphology. An application of latent heat thermal energy storage systems with phase change materials seems to be unavoidable in the present world. The latent heat thermal energy storage systems allow for storing excessive heat during low demand and then releasing it during peak demand. However, a phase change material is only one of the components of a latent heat thermal energy storage system. The second part of the latent heat thermal energy storage is a heat exchanger that allows heat transfer between a heat transfer fluid and a phase change material. Thus, the main aim of this review paper is to present and systematize knowledge about the heat exchangers used in the latent heat thermal energy storage systems. Furthermore, the operating parameters influencing the phase change time of phase change materials in the heat exchangers, and the possibilities of accelerating the phase change are discussed. Based on the literature reviewed, it is found that the phase change time of phase change materials in the heat exchangers can be reduced by changing the geometrical parameters of heat exchangers or by using fins, metal foams, heat pipes, and multiple phase change materials. To decrease the phase change material's phase change time in the tubular heat exchangers it is recommended to increase the number of tubes keeping the phase change material's mass constant. In the case of tanks filled with spherical phase change material's capsules, the capsules' diameter should be reduced to shorten the phase change time. However, it is found that some changes in the constructions of heat exchangers reduce the melting time of the phase change materials, but they increase the solidification time. The base of solar collector systems is usually installed in soil that contains moisture. In cold regions, due to the low ambient temperature, the moisture in the soil freezes, creating a risk of frost heave. This study analyzed the frost heave mechanism of power transmission and transformation foundation, clarified the factors affecting soil frost heave and the way to solve soil layer frost heave, and proposed the use of heat transfer elements to pre-frozen soil layers to prevent the foundation of the solar collector system from freezing. A numerical model of the ground heat exchange pipes in soil was established. The effects of different soil types, soil moisture content, and the effective radius and operating time on the heat transfer performance of the system were investigated by the verified numerical model. The results show that the heat pipe pre-freezing technology can reduce the drop in soil temperature, thereby increasing the temperature difference between the ground heat exchange pipe and the far-field soil. In terms of the ability to delay the decline in soil temperature, reducing the water content and selecting certain clays can increase the degree and speed of the drop in soil temperature. This study is focused on the study and development of a gas-to-liquid heat pipe heat exchanger (HPHE) based on numerical and experimental analysis. Stainless steel heat pipes were installed inside the heat exchanger in the form of three equilateral triangles, staggered into a hexagonal configuration to simulate the waste heat recovery from hot exhaust gas to a water flow. The first main aim of this study was focused on 3D design and numerical analysis, which were used to create and calculate the effect of similar input conditions on the overall system. The system was tested for the overall heat transfer by measuring the temperature change in both fluids. The heat transfer and overall average temperature were used to calculate the effectiveness of the system. In the second part of this study, a test of the waste heat recovery was undertaken with this setup, using water as the cooling fluid. The study was conducted with different input velocities and temperatures of waste hot air, controlled simultaneously by the input fan and air heater, whereas the cooling water was kept at a steady state of 30 °C and 0.0156 kg/s at the input. The hot air velocity was controlled by fans with different inlet air velocities of 0.3 m/s, 0.5 m/s, and 0.7 m/s. Moreover, the temperature of the air was changed from 150 °C to 250 °C with a step of 25 °C. The increase in temperature and the velocity of air was directly proportional to the amount of heat transferred from the air to the cooling water, and the effectiveness was also found to be inversely proportional to both of the varying input parameters. The numerical study showed a maximum increase of 12% in the heat transfer. The output temperatures of hot and cold fluids showed maximum increases of 7 K and 3 K, respectively. Incorporating thermal energy storage (TES) into a concentrating solar power (CSP) system extends the power production hours, eliminating intermittency and reducing the Levelized Cost of the Energy (LCOE). The designed TES system was integrated with a 3 kW free-piston Stirling convertor. A NaF-NaCl eutectic salt was chosen as the phase change material (PCM) with a melting temperature of 680 °C. This eutectic salt has an energy density that is 5 to 10 times that of a typical molten salt PCM. In order to overcome the drawbacks of the material having a low thermal conductivity, heat pipes were embedded into the PCM to enhance the heat transfer rate within the system. Since the dish collector tracks the sun over the course of the day, two operational extremes were tested on the system; horizontal (zero solar elevation at sunrise/sunset) and vertical (solar noon). Although the system's performance was below the expectations due to improperly sized wicks in the secondary heat pipes, the results indicated that the Stirling engine was able to produce 1.3 kWh of electricity by extracting latent heat energy from the PCM; thus, the concept of the design was validated. Experimental and numerical modeling of a heat pipe included with a phase change heat transfer was developed to assess the effects of three parameters of nanofluid, heat pipe inclination angles, and input heating power. Distilled water (DW) and 1-pyrene carboxylic-acid (PCA)-functionalized graphene nanofluid (with concentrations of 0.06 wt%) were used as working fluids in the heat pipe. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model was developed for evaluation of the heat transfer and two-phase flow through the steady-state process of the heat pipe. It was found that inclination significantly affects the heat transfer of the heat pipe. Maximum increment of thermal performance in the heat pipe reached 49.4% by using 0.06 wt% of PCA-functionalized graphene as working fluids. The result associated with this comparison indicates that the highest deviation is less than 6%, consequently confirming that the CFD model was successful in reproducing the heat and mass transfer processes in the DW and nanofluids charged heat pipe.
