Simple Summary: Diagnosing glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), solitary brain metastases (SBM), and primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) in malignant tumors of the central nervous system using multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is significantly important in helping physicians develop treatment plans and enhance patient prognosis. In this paper, MFFC-Net is developed and validated using deep learning methods to predict these three tumor categories from multi-modal MRI without the manual region of interest (ROI). MFFC-Net first uses a multi-encoder with DenseBlocks to extract deep features from multi-modal MRI. Then, the feature fusion layer fuses the deep information between different modalities and tissues. Finally, the spatial-channel attention module suppresses redundant new information and activates tumor classification-related features. Compared with radiomics models, MFFC-Net demonstrated higher accuracy. In addition, the results in the different sequences provide important references for future clinical work on MRI image acquisition. (3) Methods: This paper introduces MFFC-Net, a classification model based on the fusion of multi-modal MRIs, for the classification of GBM, SBM, and PCNSL. The network architecture consists of parallel encoders using DenseBlocks to extract features from different modalities of MRI images. Subsequently, an L 1 − n o r m feature fusion module is applied to enhance the interrelationships among tumor tissues. Then, a spatial-channel self-attention weighting operation is performed after the feature fusion. Finally, the classification results are obtained using the full convolutional layer (FC) and Soft-max. (4) Results: The ACC of MFFC-Net based on feature fusion was 0.920, better than the radiomics model (ACC of 0.829). There was no significant difference in the ACC compared to the expert radiologist (0.920 vs. 0.924, p = 0.774). In this paper, we introduce Wide-TSNet, a novel hybrid approach for predicting Bitcoin prices using time-series data transformed into images. The method involves converting time-series data into Markov transition fields (MTFs), enhancing them using histogram equalization, and classifying them using Wide ResNets, a type of convolutional neural network (CNN). We propose a tripartite classification system to accurately represent Bitcoin price trends. In addition, we demonstrate the effectiveness of Wide-TSNet through various experiments, in which it achieves an Accuracy of approximately 94% and an F1 score of 90%. It is also shown that lightweight CNN models, such as SqueezeNet and EfficientNet, can be as effective as complex models under certain conditions. Furthermore, we investigate the efficacy of other image transformation methods, such as Gramian angular fields, in capturing the trends and volatility of Bitcoin prices and revealing patterns that are not visible in the raw data. Moreover, we assess the effect of image resolution on model performance, emphasizing the importance of this factor in image-based time-series classification. To effectively treat lung and colon cancer and save lives, early and accurate identification is essential. Conventional diagnosis takes a long time and requires the manual expertise of radiologists. The rising number of new cancer cases makes it challenging to process massive volumes of data quickly. Different machine learning approaches to the classification and detection of lung and colon cancer have been proposed by multiple research studies. However, when it comes to self-learning classification and detection tasks, deep learning (DL) excels. This paper suggests a novel DL convolutional neural network (CNN) model for detecting lung and colon cancer. The proposed model is lightweight and multi-scale since it uses only 1.1 million parameters, making it appropriate for real-time applications as it provides an end-to-end solution. By incorporating features extracted at multiple scales, the model can effectively capture both local and global patterns within the input data. The explainability tools such as gradient-weighted class activation mapping and Shapley additive explanation can identify potential problems by highlighting the specific input data areas that have an impact on the model's choice. The experimental findings demonstrate that for lung and colon cancer detection, the proposed model was outperformed by the competition and accuracy rates of 99.20% have been achieved for multi-class (containing five classes) predictions. Wind comfort is an important factor when new buildings in existing urban areas are planned. It is common practice to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to model wind comfort. These simulations are usually time-consuming, making it impossible to explore a high number of different design choices for a new urban development with wind simulations. Data-driven approaches based on simulations have shown great promise, and have recently been used to predict wind comfort in urban areas. These surrogate models could be used in generative design software and would enable the planner to explore a large number of options for a new design. In this paper, we propose a novel machine learning workflow (MLW) for direct wind comfort prediction. The MLW incorporates a regression and a classification U-Net, trained based on CFD simulations. Furthermore, we present an augmentation strategy focusing on generating more training data independent of the underlying wind statistics needed to calculate the wind comfort criterion. We train the models based on different sets of training data and compare the results. Several deep learning and transformer models have been recommended in previous research to deal with the classification of hyperspectral images (HSIs). Among them, one of the most innovative is the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT), which applies a distance-independent approach to capture the global dependency among all pixels in a selected region. However, this model does not consider the local spatial-spectral and spectral sequential relations. In this paper, a dual-dimensional (i.e., spatial and spectral) BERT (the so-called D2BERT) is proposed, which improves the existing BERT model by capturing more global and local dependencies between sequential spectral bands regardless of distance. In the proposed model, two BERT branches work in parallel to investigate relations among pixels and spectral bands, respectively. In addition, the layer intermediate information is used for supervision during the training phase to enhance the performance. We used two widely employed datasets for our experimental analysis. At present, decision-making solutions developed based on deep learning (DL) models have received extensive attention in predictive maintenance (PM) applications along with the rapid improvement of computing power. Relying on the superior properties of shared weights and spatial pooling, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can learn effective representations of health states from industrial data. Many developed CNN-based schemes, such as advanced CNNs that introduce residual learning and multi-scale learning, have shown good performance in health states recognition tasks under the assumption that all the classes are known. However, these schemes have no ability to deal with new abnormal samples that belong to state classes not part of the training set. In this paper, a collective decision framework for different CNNs is proposed. It is based on a one-vs.-rest network (OVRN) to simultaneously achieve classification of known and unknown health states. OVRNs learn class-specific discriminative features and enhance the ability to reject new abnormal samples incorporated to different CNNs. According to the validation results on the public dataset of the Tennessee Eastman process (TEP), the proposed CNN-based decision schemes incorporating an OVRN have outstanding recognition ability for samples of unknown heath states while maintaining satisfactory accuracy on known states. The security and privacy risks posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a significant cause of concern in today's society. Due to technological advancement, these devices are becoming progressively inexpensive, which makes them convenient for many different applications. The massive number of UAVs is making it difficult to manage and monitor them in restricted areas. In addition, other signals using the same frequency range make it more challenging to identify UAV signals. In these circumstances, an intelligent system to detect and identify UAVs is a necessity. Most of the previous studies on UAV identification relied on various feature-extraction techniques, which are computationally expensive. Therefore, this article proposes an end-to-end deep-learning-based model to detect and identify UAVs based on their radio frequency (RF) signature. Unlike existing studies, multiscale feature-extraction techniques without manual intervention are utilized to extract enriched features that assist the model in achieving good generalization capability of the signal and making decisions with lower computational time. Additionally, residual blocks are utilized to learn complex representations, as well as to overcome vanishing gradient problems during training. The detection and identification tasks are performed in the presence of Bluetooth and WIFI signals, which are two signals from the same frequency band. For the identification task, the model is evaluated for specific devices, as well as for the signature of the particular manufacturers. The performance of the model is evaluated across various different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Furthermore, the findings are compared to the results of previous work. The proposed model yields an overall accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and F 1 -score of 97.53%, 98.06%, 98.00%, and 98.00%, respectively, for RF signal detection from 0 dB to 30 dB SNR in the CardRF dataset. The proposed model demonstrates an inference time of 0.37 ms (milliseconds) for RF signal detection, which is a substantial improvement over existing work. Therefore, the proposed end-to-end deep-learning-based method outperforms the existing work in terms of performance and time complexity. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent skin cancer and its increasing incidence is producing a high overload in dermatology services. In this sense, it is convenient to aid physicians in detecting it soon. Thus, in this paper, we propose a tool for the detection of BCC to provide a prioritization in the teledermatology consultation. Firstly, we analyze if a previous segmentation of the lesion improves the ulterior classification of the lesion. Secondly, we analyze three deep neural networks and ensemble architectures to distinguish between BCC and nevus, and BCC and other skin lesions. The best segmentation results are obtained with a SegNet deep neural network. A 98% accuracy for distinguishing BCC from nevus and a 95% accuracy classifying BCC vs. all lesions have been obtained. The proposed algorithm outperforms the winner of the challenge ISIC 2019 in almost all the metrics. Finally, we can conclude that when deep neural networks are used to classify, a previous segmentation of the lesion does not improve the classification results. Likewise, the ensemble of different neural network configurations improves the classification performance compared with individual neural network classifiers. Music genre classification has a significant role in information retrieval for the organization of growing collections of music. It is challenging to classify music with reliable accuracy. Many methods have utilized handcrafted features to identify unique patterns but are still unable to determine the original music characteristics. Comparatively, music classification using deep learning models has been shown to be dynamic and effective. Among the many neural networks, the combination of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and variants of a recurrent neural network (RNN) has not been significantly considered. Additionally, addressing the flaws in the particular neural network classification model, this paper proposes a hybrid architecture of CNN and variants of RNN such as long short-term memory (LSTM), Bi-LSTM, gated recurrent unit (GRU), and Bi-GRU. We also compared the performance based on Mel-spectrogram and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) features. Empirically, the proposed hybrid architecture of CNN and Bi-GRU using Mel-spectrogram achieved the best accuracy at 89.30%, whereas the hybridization of CNN and LSTM using MFCC achieved the best accuracy at 76.40%. A rapidly spreading epidemic, COVID-19 had a serious effect on millions and took many lives. Therefore, for individuals with COVID-19, early discovery is essential for halting the infection's progress. To quickly and accurately diagnose COVID-19, imaging modalities, including computed tomography (CT) scans and chest X-ray radiographs, are frequently employed. The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches further explored the creation of automated and precise COVID-19 detection systems. Scientists widely use deep learning techniques to identify coronavirus infection in lung imaging. In our paper, we developed a novel light CNN model architecture with watershed-based region-growing segmentation on Chest X-rays. Both CT scans and X-ray radiographs were employed along with 5-fold cross-validation. With the ubiquitous use of mobile imaging devices, the collection of perishable disaster-scene data has become unprecedentedly easy. However, computing methods are unable to understand these images with significant complexity and uncertainties. In this paper, the authors investigate the problem of disaster-scene understanding through a deep-learning approach. Two attributes of images are concerned, including hazard types and damage levels. Three deep-learning models are trained, and their performance is assessed. Specifically, the best model for hazard-type prediction has an overall accuracy (OA) of 90.1%, and the best damage-level classification model has an explainable OA of 62.6%, upon which both models adopt the Faster R-CNN architecture with a ResNet50 network as a feature extractor. It is concluded that hazard types are more identifiable than damage levels in disaster-scene images. Insights are revealed, including that damage-level recognition suffers more from inter- and intra-class variations, and the treatment of hazard-agnostic damage leveling further contributes to the underlying uncertainties. One of the challenges in the field of remote sensing is how to automatically identify and classify high-resolution remote sensing images. A number of approaches have been proposed. Among them, the methods based on low-level visual features and middle-level visual features have limitations. Therefore, this paper adopts the method of deep learning to classify scenes of high-resolution remote sensing images to learn semantic information. Most of the existing methods of convolutional neural networks are based on the existing model using transfer learning, while there are relatively few articles about designing of new convolutional neural networks based on the existing high-resolution remote sensing image datasets. In this context, this paper proposes a multi-view scaling strategy, a new convolutional neural network based on residual blocks and fusing strategy of pooling layer maps, and uses optimization methods to make the convolutional neural network named RFPNet more robust. Experiments on two benchmark remote sensing image datasets have been conducted. On the UC Merced dataset, the test accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score all exceed 93%. On the SIRI-WHU dataset, the test accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score all exceed 91%. Deep learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been successfully applied to identify pathological voices. However, the major disadvantage of using these advanced models is the lack of interpretability in explaining the predicted outcomes. This drawback further introduces a bottleneck for promoting the classification or detection of voice-disorder systems, especially in this pandemic period. In this paper, we proposed using a series of learnable sinc functions to replace the very first layer of a commonly used CNN to develop an explainable SincNet system for classifying or detecting pathological voices. The applied sinc filters, a front-end signal processor in SincNet, are critical for constructing the meaningful layer and are directly used to extract the acoustic features for following networks to generate high-level voice information. We conducted our tests on three different Far Eastern Memorial Hospital voice datasets. From our evaluations, the proposed approach achieves the highest 7%–accuracy and 9%–sensitivity improvements from conventional methods and thus demonstrates superior performance in predicting input pathological waveforms of the SincNet system. Featured Application: We propose a non-random dropout method named FocusedDropout, aiming to make the network focus more on the target. It can effectively improve the performance of feature learning in deep learning that can be used for any applications with deep learning technology. In a convolutional neural network (CNN), dropout cannot work well because dropped information is not entirely obscured in convolutional layers where features are correlated spatially. Except for randomly discarding regions or channels, many approaches try to overcome this defect by dropping influential units. In this paper, we propose a non-random dropout method named FocusedDropout, aiming to make the network focus more on the target. In FocusedDropout, we use a simple but effective method to search for the target-related features, retain these features and discard others, which is contrary to the existing methods. We find that this novel method can improve network performance by making the network more target focused. Additionally, increasing the weight decay while using FocusedDropout can avoid overfitting and increase accuracy. Experimental results show that with a slight cost, 10% of batches employing FocusedDropout, can produce a nice performance boost over the baselines on multiple datasets of classification, including CIFAR10, CIFAR100 and Tiny ImageNet, and has a good versatility for different CNN models. The heart sound signal is one of the signals that reflect the health of the heart. Research on the heart sound signal contributes to the early diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. As a commonly used deep learning network, convolutional neural network (CNN) has been widely used in images. In this paper, the method of analyzing heart sound through using CNN has been studied. Firstly, the original data set was preprocessed, and then the heart sounds were segmented on U-net, based on the deep CNN. Finally, the classification of heart sounds was completed through CNN. The data from 2016 PhysioNet/CinC Challenge was utilized for algorithm validation, and the following results were obtained. When the heart sound segmented, the overall accuracy rate was 0.991, the accuracy of the first heart sound was 0.991, the accuracy of the systolic period was 0.996, the accuracy of the second heart sound was 0.996, and the accuracy of the diastolic period was 0.997, and the average accuracy rate was 0.995; While in classification, the accuracy was 0.964, the sensitivity was 0.781, and the specificity was 0.873. Experimental studies were carried out to analyze the impact of optimizers and learning rate on the performance of deep learning-based algorithms for rock thin-section image classification. A total of 2634 rock thin-section images including three rock types—metamorphic, sedimentary, and volcanic rocks—were acquired from an online open-source science data bank. Four CNNs using three different optimizer algorithms (Adam, SGD, RMSprop) under two learning-rate decay schedules (lambda and cosine decay modes) were trained and validated. Then, a systematic comparison was conducted based on the performance of the trained model. Precision, f1-scores, and confusion matrix were adopted as the evaluation indicators. Trials revealed that deep learning-based approaches for rock thin-section image classification were highly effective and stable. Meanwhile, the experimental results showed that the cosine learning-rate decay mode was the better option for learning-rate adjustment during the training process. In addition, the performance of the four neural networks was confirmed and ranked as VGG16, GoogLeNet, MobileNetV2, and ShuffleNetV2. In the last step, the influence of optimization algorithms was evaluated based on VGG16 and GoogLeNet, and the results demonstrated that the capabilities of the model using Adam and RMSprop optimizers were more robust than that of SGD. Three-dimensional (3D) point cloud classification methods based on deep learning have good classification performance; however, they adapt poorly to diverse datasets and their classification accuracy must be improved. Therefore, FSDCNet, a neural network model based on the fusion of static and dynamic convolution, is proposed and applied for multiview 3D point cloud classification in this paper. FSDCNet devises a view selection method with fixed and random viewpoints, which effectively avoids the overfitting caused by the traditional fixed viewpoint. A local feature extraction operator of dynamic and static convolution adaptive weight fusion was designed to improve the model's adaptability to different types of datasets. To address the problems of large parameters and high computational complexity associated with the current methods of dynamic convolution, a lightweight and adaptive dynamic convolution operator was developed. In addition, FSDCNet builds a global attention pooling, integrating the most crucial information on different view features to the greatest extent. Due to these characteristics, FSDCNet is more adaptable, can extract more fine-grained detailed information, and can improve the classification accuracy of point cloud data. The proposed method was applied to the ModelNet40 and Sydney Urban Objects datasets. In these experiments, FSDCNet outperformed its counterparts, achieving state-of-the-art point cloud classification accuracy. For the ModelNet40 dataset, the overall accuracy (OA) and average accuracy (AA) of FSDCNet in a single view reached 93.8% and 91.2%, respectively, which were superior to those values for many other methods using 6 and 12 views. FSDCNet obtained the best results for 6 and 12 views, achieving 94.6%, 93.3%, 95.3%, and 93.6% in OA and AA metrics, respectively. For the Sydney Urban Objects dataset, FSDCNet achieved an OA and F1 score of 81.2% and 80.1% in a single view, respectively, which were higher than most of the compared methods. As the number of textual data is exponentially increasing, it becomes more important to develop models to analyze the text data automatically. The texts may contain various labels such as gender, age, country, sentiment, and so forth. Using such labels may bring benefits to some industrial fields, so many studies of text classification have appeared. Recently, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been adopted for the task of text classification and has shown quite successful results. In this paper, we propose convolutional neural networks for the task of sentiment classification. Through experiments with three well-known datasets, we show that employing consecutive convolutional layers is effective for relatively longer texts, and our networks are better than other state-of-the-art deep learning models. Environmental Sound Recognition has become a relevant application for smart cities. Such an application, however, demands the use of trained machine learning classifiers in order to categorize a limited set of audio categories. Although classical machine learning solutions have been proposed in the past, most of the latest solutions that have been proposed toward automated and accurate sound classification are based on a deep learning approach. Deep learning models tend to be large, which can be problematic when considering that sound classifiers often have to be embedded in resource constrained devices. In this paper, a classical machine learning based classifier called MosAIc, and a lighter Convolutional Neural Network model for environmental sound recognition, are proposed to directly compete in terms of accuracy with the latest deep learning solutions. Both approaches are evaluated in an embedded system in order to identify the key parameters when placing such applications on constrained devices. The experimental results show that classical machine learning classifiers can be combined to achieve similar results to deep learning models, and even outperform them in accuracy. Alzheimer's disease is one of the major challenges of population ageing, and diagnosis and prediction of the disease through various biomarkers is the key. While the application of deep learning as imaging technologies has recently expanded across the medical industry, empirical design of these technologies is very difficult. The main reason for this problem is that the performance of the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) differ greatly depending on the statistical distribution of the input dataset. Different hyperparameters also greatly affect the convergence of the CNN models. With this amount of information, selecting appropriate parameters for the network structure has became a large research area. Genetic Algorithm (GA), is a very popular technique to automatically select a high-performance network architecture. In this paper, we show the possibility of optimising the network architecture using GA, where its search space includes both network structure configuration and hyperparameters. To verify the performance of our Algorithm, we used an amyloid brain image dataset that is used for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. Neural networks have several useful applications in machine learning. However, benefiting from the neural-network architecture can be tricky in some instances due to the large number of parameters that can influence performance. In general, given a particular dataset, a data scientist cannot do much to improve the efficiency of the model. However, by tuning certain hyperparameters, the model's accuracy and time of execution can be improved. Hence, it is of utmost importance to select the optimal values of hyperparameters. Choosing the optimal values of hyperparameters requires experience and mastery of the machine learning paradigm. In this paper, neural network-based architectures are tested based on altering the values of hyperparameters for handwritten-based digit recognition. Various neural network-based models are used to analyze different aspects of the same, primarily accuracy based on hyperparameter values. The extensive experimentation setup in this article should, therefore, provide the most accurate and time-efficient solution models. Research on transformers in remote sensing (RS), which started to increase after 2021, is facing the problem of a relative lack of review. To understand the trends of transformers in RS, we undertook a quantitative analysis of the major research on transformers over the past two years by dividing the application of transformers into eight domains: land use/land cover (LULC) classification, segmentation, fusion, change detection, object detection, object recognition, registration, and others. Quantitative results show that transformers achieve a higher accuracy in LULC classification and fusion, with more stable performance in segmentation and object detection. Combining the analysis results on LULC classification and segmentation, we have found that transformers need more parameters than convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Additionally, further research is also needed regarding inference speed to improve transformers' performance. It was determined that the most common application scenes for transformers in our database are urban, farmland, and water bodies. We also found that transformers are employed in the natural sciences such as agriculture and environmental protection rather than the humanities or economics. Finally, this work summarizes the analysis results of transformers in remote sensing obtained during the research process and provides a perspective on future directions of development. In recent years, due to its powerful feature extraction ability, the deep learning method has been widely used in hyperspectral image classification tasks. However, the features extracted by classical deep learning methods have limited discrimination ability, resulting in unsatisfactory classification performance. In addition, due to the limited data samples of hyperspectral images (HSIs), how to achieve high classification performance under limited samples is also a research hotspot. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes a deep learning network framework named the three-dimensional coordination attention mechanism network (3DCAMNet). In this paper, a three-dimensional coordination attention mechanism (3DCAM) is designed. This attention mechanism can not only obtain the long-distance dependence of the spatial position of HSIs in the vertical and horizontal directions, but also obtain the difference of importance between different spectral bands. In order to extract the spectral and spatial information of HSIs more fully, a convolution module based on convolutional neural network (CNN) is adopted in this paper. In addition, the linear module is introduced after the convolution module, which can extract more fine advanced features. In order to verify the effectiveness of 3DCAMNet, a series of experiments were carried out on five datasets, namely, Indian Pines (IP), Pavia University (UP), Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Salinas Valley (SV), and University of Houston (HT). The OAs obtained by the proposed method on the five datasets were 95.81%, 97.01%, 99.01%, 97.48%, and 97.69% respectively, 3.71%, 9.56%, 0.67%, 2.89% and 0.11% higher than the most advanced A2S2K-ResNet. Ensuring access to safe drinking water is a critical concern, particularly in regions with limited resources. This study evaluates groundwater potability using a range of machine learning models, including logistic regression, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Classifier (SVC), and Random Forest, as well as deep learning models such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Feedforward Neural Networks (FNNs), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). We collected thirty groundwater samples from residential and industrial locations in Jaen, Kano State, Nigeria, focusing on nine crucial physicochemical parameters: electric conductivity, pH, total dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, chloride, zinc, manganese, and copper. Machine learning models, such as Logistic Regression and Random Forest, achieved accuracy scores of 0.833. They were closely followed by deep learning models, such as ANNs, with an accuracy score of 0.833, and LSTM, which scored 0.666. KNN and SVC provided moderately accurate predictions, scoring 0.667, while CNN and FNN achieved lower scores of 0.333 and 0.5, respectively. As the field of routine pathology transitions into the digital realm, there is a surging demand for the full automation of microscope scanners, aiming to expedite the process of digitizing tissue samples, and consequently, enhancing the efficiency of case diagnoses. The key to achieving seamless automatic imaging lies in the precise detection and segmentation of tissue sample regions on the glass slides. State-of-the-art approaches for this task lean heavily on deep learning techniques, particularly U-Net convolutional neural networks. However, since samples can be highly diverse and prepared in various ways, it is almost impossible to be fully prepared for and cover every scenario with training data. We propose a data augmentation step that allows artificially modifying the training data by extending some artifact features of the available data to the rest of the dataset. This procedure can be used to generate images that can be considered synthetic. These artifacts could include felt pen markings, speckles of dirt, residual bubbles in covering glue, or stains. With continuous development of artificial intelligence, text classification has gradually changed from a knowledge-based method to a method based on statistics and machine learning. Among them, it is a very important and efficient way to classify text based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Text data are a kind of sequence data, while time sequentiality of the general text data is relatively weak, so text classification is usually less relevant to the sequential structure of the full text. Therefore, CNN-based text classification has gradually become a research hotspot when dealing with issues of text classification. For machine learning, especially deep learning, model interpretability has increasingly become the focus of academic research and industrial applications, and also become a key issue for further development and application of deep learning technology. Therefore, we recommend using the backtracking analysis method to conduct in-depth research on deep learning models. This paper proposes an analysis method for interpretability of a CNN text classification model. The method proposed by us can perform multi-angle analysis on the discriminant results of multi-classified text and multi-label classification tasks through backtracking analysis on model prediction results. Finally, the analysis results of the model can be displayed using visualization technology from multiple dimensions based on interpretability. The representative data set IMDB (Internet Movie Database) in text classification is verified by examples, and the results show that the model can be effectively analyzed when using our method. In order to realize the non-destructive intelligent identification of weld surface defects, an intelligent recognition method based on deep learning is proposed, which is mainly formed by convolutional neural network (CNN) and forest random. First, the high-level features are automatically learned through the CNN. Random forest is trained with extracted high-level features to predict the classification results. Secondly, the weld surface defects images are collected and preprocessed by image enhancement and threshold segmentation. A database of weld surface defects is established using pre-processed images. Finally, comparative experiments are performed on the weld surface defects database. A recently discovered coronavirus (COVID-19) poses a major danger to human life and health across the planet. The most important step in managing and combating COVID-19 is to accurately screen and diagnose affected people. The imaging technology of lung X-ray is a useful imaging identification/detection approach among them. The help of such computer-aided machines and diagnoses to examine lung X-ray images of COVID-19 instances can give supplemental assessment ideas to specialists, easing their workload to some level. The novel concept of this study is a hybridized approach merging pertinent manual features with deep spatial features for the classification of COVID-19. Further, we employed traditional transfer learning techniques in this investigation, utilizing four different pre-trained CNN-based deep learning models, with the Inception model showing a reasonably accurate result and a diagnosis accuracy of 82.17%. We provide a successful diagnostic approach that blends deep characteristics with machine learning classification to further increase clinical performance. It employs a complete diagnostic model. Two datasets were used to test the suggested approach, and it did quite well on several of them. On 1102 lung X-ray scans, the model was originally evaluated. The results of the experiments indicate that the suggested SVM model has a diagnostic accuracy of 95.57%. When compared to the Xception model's baseline, the diagnostic accuracy had risen by 17.58 percent. The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of the proposed models were 95.37 percent, 95.39%, and 95.77%, respectively. To show the adaptability of our approach, we also verified our proposed model on other datasets. Finally, we arrived at results that were conclusive. A real-time Bangla Sign Language interpreter can enable more than 200 k hearing and speech-impaired people to the mainstream workforce in Bangladesh. Bangla Sign Language (BdSL) recognition and detection is a challenging topic in computer vision and deep learning research because sign language recognition accuracy may vary on the skin tone, hand orientation, and background. This research has used deep machine learning models for accurate and reliable BdSL Alphabets and Numerals using two well-suited and robust datasets. The dataset prepared in this study comprises of the largest image database for BdSL Alphabets and Numerals in order to reduce inter-class similarity while dealing with diverse image data, which comprises various backgrounds and skin tones. The papers compared classification with and without background images to determine the best working model for BdSL Alphabets and Numerals interpretation. The CNN model trained with the images that had a background was found to be more effective than without background. The hand detection portion in the segmentation approach must be more accurate in the hand detection process to boost the overall accuracy in the sign recognition. It was found that ResNet18 performed best with 99.99% accuracy, precision, F1 score, sensitivity, and 100% specificity, which outperforms the works in the literature for BdSL Alphabets and Numerals recognition. Multivariate Time Series (MTS) classification has gained importance over the past decade with the increase in the number of temporal datasets in multiple domains. The current state-of-the-art MTS classifier is a heavyweight deep learning approach, which outperforms the second-best MTS classifier only on large datasets. Moreover, this deep learning approach cannot provide faithful explanations as it relies on post hoc model-agnostic explainability methods, which could prevent its use in numerous applications. In this paper, we present XCM, an eXplainable Convolutional neural network for MTS classification. XCM is a new compact convolutional neural network which extracts information relative to the observed variables and time directly from the input data. Thus, XCM architecture enables a good generalization ability on both large and small datasets, while allowing the full exploitation of a faithful post hoc model-specific explainability method (Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping) by precisely identifying the observed variables and timestamps of the input data that are important for predictions. We first show that XCM outperforms the state-of-the-art MTS classifiers on both the large and small public UEA datasets. Then, we illustrate how XCM reconciles performance and explainability on a synthetic dataset and show that XCM enables a more precise identification of the regions of the input data that are important for predictions compared to the current deep learning MTS classifier also providing faithful explainability. Finally, we present how XCM can outperform the current most accurate state-of-the-art algorithm on a real-world application while enhancing explainability by providing faithful and more informative explanations. We aimed to automate Gram-stain analysis to speed up the detection of bacterial strains in patients suffering from infections. We performed comparative analyses of visual transformers (VT) using various configurations including model size (small vs. large), training epochs (1 vs. 100), and quantization schemes (tensor- or channel-wise) using float32 or int8 on publicly available (DIBaS, n = 660) and locally compiled (n = 8500) datasets. Six VT models (BEiT, DeiT, MobileViT, PoolFormer, Swin and ViT) were evaluated and compared to two convolutional neural networks (CNN), ResNet and ConvNeXT. The overall overview of performances including accuracy, inference time and model size was also visualized. Frames per second (FPS) of small models consistently surpassed their large counterparts by a factor of 1-2×. DeiT small was the fastest VT in int8 configuration (6.0 FPS). Satellite images have drawn increasing interest from a wide variety of users, including business and government, ever since their increased usage in important fields ranging from weather, forestry and agriculture to surface changes and biodiversity monitoring. Recent updates in the field have also introduced various deep learning (DL) architectures to satellite imagery as a means of extracting useful information. However, this new approach comes with its own issues, including the fact that many users utilize ready-made cloud services (both public and private) in order to take advantage of built-in DL algorithms and thus avoid the complexity of developing their own DL architectures. However, this presents new challenges to protecting data against unauthorized access, mining and usage of sensitive information extracted from that data. Therefore, new privacy concerns regarding sensitive data in satellite images have arisen. This research proposes an efficient approach that takes advantage of privacy-preserving deep learning (PPDL)-based techniques to address privacy concerns regarding data from satellite images when applying public DL models. In this paper, we proposed a partially homomorphic encryption scheme (a Paillier scheme), which enables processing of confidential information without exposure of the underlying data. Our method achieves robust results when applied to a custom convolutional neural network (CNN) as well as to existing transfer learning methods. The proposed encryption scheme also allows for training CNN models on encrypted data directly, which requires lower computational overhead. Our experiments have been performed on a real-world dataset covering several regions across Saudi Arabia. The results demonstrate that our CNN-based models were able to retain data utility while maintaining data privacy. Security parameters such as correlation coefficient (−0.004), entropy (7.95), energy (0.01), contrast (10.57), number of pixel change rate (4.86), unified average change intensity (33.66), and more are in favor of our proposed encryption scheme. Although hyperspectral images capture very detailed information about the scanned objects, their efficient analysis, transfer, and storage are still important practical challenges due to their large volume. Classifying and segmenting such imagery are the pivotal steps in virtually all applications, hence developing new techniques for these tasks is a vital research area. Here, deep learning has established the current state of the art. However, deploying large-capacity deep models on-board an Earth observation satellite poses additional technological challenges concerned with their memory footprints, energy consumption requirements, and robustness against varying-quality image data, with the last problem being under-researched. In this paper, we tackle this issue, and propose a set of simulation scenarios that reflect a range of atmospheric conditions and noise contamination that may ultimately happen on-board an imaging satellite. We verify their impact on the generalization capabilities of spectral and spectral-spatial convolutional neural networks for hyperspectral image segmentation. Our experimental analysis, coupled with various visualizations, sheds more light on the robustness of the deep models and indicate that specific noise distributions can significantly deteriorate their performance. In the world, brain tumor (BT) is considered the major cause of death related to cancer, which requires early and accurate detection for patient survival. In the early detection of BT, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) plays a significant role, the medical experts receive a second opinion through CAD during image examination. Several researchers proposed different methods based on traditional machine learning (TML) and deep learning (DL). The TML requires hand-crafted features engineering, which is a time-consuming process to select an optimal features extractor and requires domain experts to have enough knowledge of optimal features selection. The DL methods outperform the TML due to the end-to-end automatic, high-level, and robust feature extraction mechanism. In BT classification, the deep learning methods have a great potential to capture local features by convolution operation, but the ability of global features extraction to keep Long-range dependencies is relatively weak. A self-attention mechanism in Vision Transformer (ViT) has the ability to model long-range dependencies which is very important for precise BT classification. Therefore, we employ a hybrid transformer-enhanced convolutional neural network (TECNN)-based model for BT classification, where the CNN is used for local feature extraction and the transformer employs an attention mechanism to extract global features. Experiments are performed on two public datasets that are BraTS 2018 and Figshare. The experimental results of our model using BraTS 2018 and Figshare datasets achieves an average accuracy of 96.75% and 99.10%, respectively. The early identification of microvascular changes in patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) may offer an important clinical opportunity. This study aimed to define a method, based on deep learning approaches, for the identification of COVID-19 patients from the analysis of the raw PPG signal, acquired with a pulse oximeter. To develop the method, we acquired the PPG signal of 93 COVID-19 patients and 90 healthy control subjects using a finger pulse oximeter. To select the good quality portions of the signal, we developed a template-matching method that excludes samples corrupted by noise or motion artefacts. These samples were subsequently used to develop a custom convolutional neural network model. The model accepts PPG signal segments as input and performs a binary classification between COVID-19 and control samples. The proposed model showed good performance in identifying COVID-19 patients, achieving 83.86% accuracy and 84.30% sensitivity (hold-out validation) on test data. The obtained results indicate that photoplethysmography may be a useful tool for microcirculation assessment and early recognition of SARS-CoV-2-induced microvascular changes. In addition, such a noninvasive and low-cost method is well suited for the development of a user-friendly system, potentially applicable even in resource-limited healthcare settings. The most commonly injured ligament in the human body is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). ACL injury is standard among the football, basketball and soccer players. The study aims to detect anterior cruciate ligament injury in an early stage via efficient and thorough automatic magnetic resonance imaging without involving radiologists, through a deep learning method. The proposed approach in this paper used a customized 14 layers ResNet-14 architecture of convolutional neural network (CNN) with six different directions by using class balancing and data augmentation. The performance was evaluated using accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision and F1 score of our customized ResNet-14 deep learning architecture with hybrid class balancing and real-time data augmentation after 5-fold cross-validation, with results of 0.920%, 0.916%, 0.946%, 0.916% and 0.923%, respectively. For our proposed ResNet-14 CNN the average area under curves (AUCs) for healthy tear, partial tear and fully ruptured tear had results of 0.980%, 0.970%, and 0.999%, respectively. The proposing diagnostic results indicated that our model could be used to detect automatically and evaluate ACL injuries in athletes using the proposed deep-learning approach. With the rapid expansion of intelligent resource-constrained devices and high-speed communication technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) has earned wide recognition as the primary standard for low-power lossy networks (LLNs). Nevertheless, IoT infrastructures are vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to the constraints in computation, storage, and communication capacity of the endpoint devices. From one side, the majority of newly developed cyber-attacks are formed by slightly mutating formerly established cyber-attacks to produce a new attack that tends to be treated as normal traffic through the IoT network. From the other side, the influence of coupling the deep learning techniques with the cybersecurity field has become a recent inclination of many security applications due to their impressive performance. In this paper, we provide the comprehensive development of a new intelligent and autonomous deep-learning-based detection and classification system for cyber-attacks in IoT communication networks that leverage the power of convolutional neural networks, abbreviated as IoT-IDCS-CNN (IoT based Intrusion Detection and Classification System using Convolutional Neural Network). The proposed IoT-IDCS-CNN makes use of high-performance computing that employs the robust Compute Unified Device Architectures (CUDA) based Nvidia GPUs (Graphical Processing Units) and parallel processing that employs high-speed I9-core-based Intel CPUs. In particular, the proposed system is composed of three subsystems: a feature engineering subsystem, a feature learning subsystem, and a traffic classification subsystem. All subsystems were developed, verified, integrated, and validated in this research. To evaluate the developed system, we employed the Network Security Laboratory-Knowledge Discovery Databases (NSL-KDD) dataset, which includes all the key attacks in IoT computing. The simulation results demonstrated a greater than 99.3% and 98.2% cyber-attack classification accuracy for the binary-class classifier (normal vs. anomaly) and the multiclass classifier (five categories), respectively. The proposed system was validated using a K-fold cross-validation method and was evaluated using the confusion matrix parameters (i.e., true negative (TN), true positive (TP), false negative (FN), false positive (FP)), along with other classification performance metrics, including precision, recall, F1-score, and false alarm rate. Recently, deep learning has been reported to be an effective method for improving hyperspectral image classification and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are, in particular, gaining more and more attention in this field. CNNs provide automatic approaches that can learn more abstract features of hyperspectral images from spectral, spatial, or spectral-spatial domains. However, CNN applications are focused on learning features directly from image data—while the intrinsic relations between original features, which may provide more information for classification, are not fully considered. In order to make full use of the relations between hyperspectral features and to explore more objective features for improving classification accuracy, we proposed feature relations map learning (FRML) in this paper. FRML can automatically enhance the separability of different objects in an image, using a segmented feature relations map (SFRM) that reflects the relations between spectral features through a normalized difference index (NDI), and it can then learn new features from SFRM using a CNN-based feature extractor. Finally, based on these features, a classifier was designed for the classification. With FRML, our experimental results from four popular hyperspectral datasets indicate that the proposed method can achieve more representative and objective features to improve classification accuracy, outperforming classifications using the comparative methods. Recently, deep learning methods based on three-dimensional (3-D) convolution have been widely used in the hyperspectral image (HSI) classification tasks and shown good classification performance. However, affected by the irregular distribution of various classes in HSI datasets, most previous 3-D convolutional neural network (CNN)-based models require more training samples to obtain better classification accuracies. In addition, as the network deepens, which leads to the spatial resolution of feature maps gradually decreasing, much useful information may be lost during the training process. Therefore, how to ensure efficient network training is key to the HSI classification tasks. To address the issue mentioned above, in this paper, we proposed a 3-DCNN-based residual group channel and space attention network (RGCSA) for HSI classification. Firstly, the proposed bottom-up top-down attention structure with the residual connection can improve network training efficiency by optimizing channel-wise and spatial-wise features throughout the whole training process. Secondly, the proposed residual group channel-wise attention module can reduce the possibility of losing useful information, and the novel spatial-wise attention module can extract context information to strengthen the spatial features. Furthermore, our proposed RGCSA network only needs few training samples to achieve higher classification accuracies than previous 3-D-CNN-based networks. The experimental results on three commonly used HSI datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed network based on the attention mechanism and the effectiveness of the proposed channel-wise and spatial-wise attention modules for HSI classification. Accurate hyperspectral image classification has been an important yet challenging task for years. With the recent success of deep learning in various tasks, 2-dimensional (2D)/3-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been exploited to capture spectral or spatial information in hyperspectral images. On the other hand, few approaches make use of both spectral and spatial information simultaneously, which is critical to accurate hyperspectral image classification. This paper presents a novel Synergistic Convolutional Neural Network (SyCNN) for accurate hyperspectral image classification. The SyCNN consists of a hybrid module that combines 2D and 3D CNNs in feature learning and a data interaction module that fuses spectral and spatial hyperspectral information. Additionally, it introduces a 3D attention mechanism before the fully-connected layer which helps filter out interfering features and information effectively. Deep learning has attracted extensive attention in the field of hyperspectral images (HSIs) classification. However, supervised deep learning methods heavily rely on a large amount of label information. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a two-stage deep domain adaptation method for hyperspectral image classification, which can minimize the data shift between two domains and learn a more discriminative deep embedding space with very few labeled target samples. A deep embedding space is first learned by minimizing the distance between the source domain and the target domain based on Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) criterion. The Spatial–Spectral Siamese Network is then exploited to reduce the data shift and learn a more discriminative deep embedding space by minimizing the distance between samples from different domains but the same class label and maximizes the distance between samples from different domains and class labels based on pairwise loss. For the classification task, the softmax layer is replaced with a linear support vector machine, in which learning minimizes a margin-based loss instead of the cross-entropy loss. Deep learning has achieved great success in hyperspectral image classification. However, when processing new hyperspectral images, the existing deep learning models must be retrained from scratch with sufficient samples, which is inefficient and undesirable in practical tasks. This paper aims to explore how to accurately classify new hyperspectral images with only a few labeled samples, i.e., the hyperspectral images few-shot classification. Specifically, we design a new deep classification model based on relational network and train it with the idea of meta-learning. Firstly, the feature learning module and the relation learning module of the model can make full use of the spatial–spectral information in hyperspectral images and carry out relation learning by comparing the similarity between samples. Secondly, the task-based learning strategy can enable the model to continuously enhance its ability to learn how to learn with a large number of tasks randomly generated from different data sets. Benefitting from the above two points, the proposed method has excellent generalization ability and can obtain satisfactory classification results with only a few labeled samples. In order to verify the performance of the proposed method, experiments were carried out on three public data sets. Land-cover information is significant for land-use planning, urban management, and environment monitoring. This paper presented a novel extended topology-preserving segmentation (ETPS)-based multi-scale and multi-feature method using the convolutional neural network (EMMCNN) for high spatial resolution (HSR) image land-cover classification. The EMMCNN first segmented the images into superpixels using the ETPS algorithm with false-color composition and enhancement and built parallel convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with dense connections for superpixel multi-scale deep feature learning. Then, the multi-resolution segmentation (MRS) object hand-delineated features were extracted and mapped to superpixels for complementary multi-segmentation and multi-type representation. Finally, a hybrid network was designed to consist of 1-dimension CNN and multi-layer perception (MLP) with channel-wise stacking and attention-based weighting for adaptive feature fusion and comprehensive classification. Experimental results on four real HSR GaoFen-2 datasets demonstrated the superiority of the proposed EMMCNN over several well-known classification methods in terms of accuracy and consistency, with overall accuracy averagely improved by 1.74% to 19.35% for testing images and 1.06% to 8.78% for validating images. It was found that the solution combining an appropriate number of larger scales and multi-type features is recommended for better performance. High-Performance Computing (HPC) has recently been attracting more attention in remote sensing applications due to the challenges posed by the increased amount of open data that are produced daily by Earth Observation (EO) programs. The unique parallel computing environments and programming techniques that are integrated in HPC systems are able to solve large-scale problems such as the training of classification algorithms with large amounts of Remote Sensing (RS) data. This paper shows that the training of state-of-the-art deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be efficiently performed in distributed fashion using parallel implementation techniques on HPC machines containing a large number of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The experimental results confirm that distributed training can drastically reduce the amount of time needed to perform full training, resulting in near linear scaling without loss of test accuracy. Transfer learning can enhance classification performance of a target domain with insufficient training data by utilizing knowledge relating to the target domain from source domain. Nowadays, it is common to see two or more source domains available for knowledge transfer, which can improve performance of learning tasks in the target domain. However, the classification performance of the target domain decreases due to mismatching of probability distribution. Recent studies have shown that deep learning can build deep structures by extracting more effective features to resist the mismatching. In this paper, we propose a new multi-source deep transfer neural network algorithm, MultiDTNN, based on convolutional neural network and multi-source transfer learning. In MultiDTNN, joint probability distribution adaptation (JPDA) is used for reducing the mismatching between source and target domains to enhance features transferability of the source domain in deep neural networks. Then, the convolutional neural network is trained by utilizing the datasets of each source and target domain to obtain a set of classifiers. Finally, the designed selection strategy selects classifier with the smallest classification error on the target domain from the set to assemble the MultiDTNN framework. Handwritten character recognition is a computer-vision-system problem that is still critical and challenging in many computer-vision tasks. With the increased interest in handwriting recognition as well as the developments in machine-learning and deep-learning algorithms, researchers have made significant improvements and advances in developing English-handwriting-recognition methodologies; however, Arabic handwriting recognition has not yet received enough interest. In this work, several deep-learning and hybrid models were created. The methodology of the current study took advantage of machine learning in classification and deep learning in feature extraction to create hybrid models. Among the standalone deep-learning models trained on the two datasets used in the experiments performed, the best results were obtained with the transfer-learning model on the MNIST dataset, with 0.9967 accuracy achieved. The results for the hybrid models using the MNIST dataset were good, with accuracy measures exceeding 0.9 for all the hybrid models; however, the results for the hybrid models using the Arabic character dataset were inferior. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a deadly cancer characterized by aberrant accumulation of immature lymphocytes in the blood or bone marrow. Effective treatment of ALL is strongly associated with the early diagnosis of the disease. Current practice for initial ALL diagnosis is performed through manual evaluation of stained blood smear microscopy images, which is a time-consuming and error-prone process. Deep learning-based human-centric biomedical diagnosis has recently emerged as a powerful tool for assisting physicians in making medical decisions. Therefore, numerous computer-aided diagnostic systems have been developed to autonomously identify ALL in blood images. In this study, a new Bayesian-based optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) is introduced for the detection of ALL in microscopic smear images. To promote classification performance, the architecture of the proposed CNN and its hyperparameters are customized to input data through the Bayesian optimization approach. The Bayesian optimization technique adopts an informed iterative procedure to search the hyperparameter space for the optimal set of network hyperparameters that minimizes an objective error function. The proposed CNN is trained and validated using a hybrid dataset which is formed by integrating two public ALL datasets. Data augmentation has been adopted to further supplement the hybrid image set to boost classification performance. The Bayesian search-derived optimal CNN model recorded an improved performance of image-based ALL classification on test set. Endoscopy is widely applied in the examination of gastric cancer. However, extensive knowledge and experience are required, owing to the need to examine the lesion while manipulating the endoscope. Various diagnostic support techniques have been reported for this examination. In our previous study, segmentation of invasive areas of gastric cancer was performed directly from endoscopic images and the detection sensitivity per case was 0.98. This method has challenges of false positives and computational costs because segmentation was applied to all healthy images that were captured during the examination. In this study, we propose a cascaded deep learning model to perform categorization of endoscopic images and identification of the invasive region to solve the above challenges. Endoscopic images are first classified as normal, showing early gastric cancer and showing advanced gastric cancer using a convolutional neural network. Segmentation on the extent of gastric cancer invasion is performed for the images classified as showing cancer using two separate U-Net models. In an experiment, 1208 endoscopic images collected from healthy subjects, 533 images collected from patients with early stage gastric cancer, and 637 images from patients with advanced gastric cancer were used for evaluation. The sensitivity and specificity of the proposed approach in the detection of gastric cancer via image classification were 97.0% and 99.4%, respectively. Furthermore, both detection sensitivity and specificity reached 100% in a case-based evaluation. The extent of invasion was also identified at an acceptable level, suggesting that the proposed method may be considered useful for the classification of endoscopic images and identification of the extent of cancer invasion. Targeted therapy is an effective treatment for non-small cell lung cancer. Before treatment, pathologists need to confirm tumor morphology and type, which is time-consuming and highly repetitive. In this study, we propose a multi-task deep learning model based on a convolutional neural network for joint cancer lesion region segmentation and histological subtype classification, using magnified pathological tissue images. Firstly, we constructed a shared feature extraction channel to extract abstract information of visual space for joint segmentation and classification learning. Then, the weighted losses of segmentation and classification tasks were tuned to balance the computing bias of the multi-task model. We evaluated our model on a private in-house dataset of pathological tissue images collected from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University. The proposed approach achieved Dice similarity coefficients of 93.5% and 89.0% for segmenting squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (AD) specimens, respectively. In addition, the proposed method achieved an accuracy of 97.8% in classifying SCC vs. normal tissue and an accuracy of 100% in classifying AD vs. normal tissue. The experimental results demonstrated that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods and shows promising performance for both lesion region segmentation and subtype classification.
