Advancements in imaging, computer vision, and automation have revolutionized various fields, including field-based high-throughput plant phenotyping (FHTPP). This integration allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of plant traits. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool in FHTPP, particularly in crop segmentation—identifying crops from the background—crucial for trait analysis. However, the effectiveness of DCNNs often hinges on the availability of large, labeled datasets, which poses a challenge due to the high cost of labeling. In this study, a deep learning with bagging approach is introduced to enhance crop segmentation using high-resolution RGB images, tested on the NU-Spidercam dataset from maize plots. The proposed method outperforms traditional machine learning and deep learning models in prediction accuracy and speed. Remarkably, it achieves up to 40 % higher Intersection-over-Union (IoU) than the threshold method and 11 % over conventional machine learning, with significantly faster prediction times and manageable training duration. Crucially, it demonstrates that even small labeled datasets can yield high accuracy in semantic segmentation. This approach not only proves effective for FHTPP but also suggests potential for broader application in remote sensing, offering a scalable solution to semantic segmentation challenges. Transformer models have achieved great results in the field of computer vision over the past 2 years, drawing attention from within the field of remote sensing. However, there are still relatively few studies on this model in the field of remote sensing. Which method is more suitable for remote-sensing segmentation? In particular, how do different transformer models perform in the face of high-spatial resolution and the multispectral resolution of remote-sensing images? To explore these questions, this paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of three mainstream transformer models, including the segmentation transformer (SETRnet), SwinUnet, and TransUnet, by evaluating three aspects: a visual analysis of feature-segmentation results, accuracy, and training time. The experimental results show that the transformer structure has obvious advantages for the feature-extraction ability of large-scale remote-sensing data sets and ground objects, but the segmentation performance of different transfer structures in different scales of remote-sensing data sets is also very different. SwinUnet exhibits better global semantic interaction and pixel-level segmentation prediction on the large-scale Potsdam data set, and the SwinUnet model has the highest accuracy metrics for KAPPA, MIoU, and OA in the Potsdam data set, at 76.47%, 63.62%, and 85.01%, respectively. TransUnet has better segmentation results in the small-scale Vaihingen data set, and the three accuracy metrics of KAPPA, MIoU, and OA are the highest, at 80.54%, 56.25%, and 85.55%, respectively. TransUnet is better able to handle the edges and details of feature segmentation thanks to the network structure together built by its transformer and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Therefore, TransUnet segmentation accuracy is higher when using a small-scale Vaihingen data set. Compared with SwinUnet and TransUnet, the segmentation performance of SETRnet in different scales of remote-sensing data sets is not ideal, so SETRnet is not suitable for the research task of remote-sensing image segmentation. In addition, this paper discusses the reasons for the performance differences between transformer models and discusses the differences between transformer models and CNN. This study further promotes the application of transformer models in remote-sensing image segmentation, improves the understanding of transformer models, and helps relevant researchers to select a more appropriate transformer model or model improvement method for remote-sensing image segmentation. Timely information about the need to thin forests is vital in forest management to maintain a healthy forest while maximizing income. Currently, very-high-spatial-resolution remote sensing data can provide crucial assistance to experts when evaluating the maturity of thinnings. Nevertheless, this task is still predominantly carried out in the field and demands extensive resources. This paper presents a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to detect the necessity and urgency of carrying out thinnings using only remote sensing data. The approach uses very-high-spatial-resolution RGB and near-infrared orthophotos; a canopy height model (CHM); a digital terrain model (DTM); the slope; and reference data, which, in this case, originate from spruce-dominated forests in the Austrian Alps. After tuning, the model achieves an F1 score of 82.23% on our test data, which indicates that the model is usable in a practical setting. We conclude that DCNNs are capable of detecting the need to carry out thinnings in forests. In contrast, attempts to assess the urgency of the need for thinnings with DCNNs proved to be unsuccessful. However, additional data, such as age or yield class, have the potential to improve the results. Our investigation into the influence of each individual input feature shows that orthophotos appear to contain the most relevant information for detecting the need for thinning. Computer vision has great potential to accelerate the global scale of photovoltaic potential analysis by extracting detailed roof information from high-resolution aerial images, but the lack of existing deep learning datasets is a major barrier. Therefore, we present the Roof Information Dataset for semantic segmentation of roof segments and roof superstructures. We assessed the label quality of initial roof superstructure annotations by conducting an annotation experiment and identified annotator agreements of 0.15–0.70 mean intersection over union, depending on the class. We discuss associated the implications on the training and evaluation of two convolutional neural networks and found that the quality of the prediction behaved similarly to the annotator agreement for most classes. The class photovoltaic module was predicted to be best with a class-specific mean intersection over union of 0.69. By providing the datasets in initial and reviewed versions, we promote a data-centric approach for the semantic segmentation of roof information. Finally, we conducted a photovoltaic potential analysis case study and demonstrated the high impact of roof superstructures as well as the viability of the computer vision approach to increase accuracy. Advances in deep learning techniques for remote sensing as well as the increased availability of high-resolution data enable the extraction of more detailed information from aerial images. One promising task is the semantic segmentation of roof segments and their orientation. However, the lack of annotated data is a major barrier for deploying respective models on a large scale. Previous research demonstrated the viability of the deep learning approach for the task, but currently, published datasets are small-scale, manually labeled, and rare. Therefore, this paper extends the state of the art by presenting a novel method for the automated generation of large-scale datasets based on semantic 3D city models. Furthermore, we train a model on a dataset 50 times larger than existing datasets and achieve superior performance while applying it to a wider variety of buildings. We evaluate the approach by comparing networks trained on four dataset configurations, including an existing dataset and our novel large-scale dataset. The results show that the network performance measured as intersection over union can be increased from 0.60 for the existing dataset to 0.70 when the large-scale model is applied on the same region. The large-scale model performs superiorly even when applied to more diverse test samples, achieving 0.635. The novel approach contributes to solving the dataset bottleneck and consequently to improving semantic segmentation of roof segments. Global solar photovoltaic capacity has consistently doubled every 18 months over the last two decades, going from 0.3 GW in 2000 to 643 GW in 2019, and is forecast to reach 4240 GW by 2040. However, these numbers are uncertain, and virtually all reporting on deployments lacks a unified source of either information or validation. In this paper, we propose, optimize, and validate a deep learning framework to detect and map solar farms using a state-of-the-art semantic segmentation convolutional neural network applied to satellite imagery. As a final step in the pipeline, we propose a model to estimate the energy generation capacity of the detected solar energy facilities. Objectively, the deep learning model achieved highly competitive performance indicators, including a mean accuracy of 96.87%, and a Jaccard Index (intersection over union of classified pixels) score of 95.5%. Subjectively, it was found to detect spaces between panels producing a segmentation output at a sub-farm level that was better than human labeling. Finally, the detected areas and predicted generation capacities were validated against publicly available data to within an average error of 4.5% Deep learning applied specifically for the detection and mapping of solar farms is an active area of research, and this deep learning capacity evaluation pipeline is one of the first of its kind. Point clouds are one of the most widely used data formats produced by depth sensors. There is a lot of research into feature extraction from unordered and irregular point cloud data. Deep learning in computer vision achieves great performance for data classification and segmentation of 3D data points as point clouds. Various research has been conducted on point clouds and remote sensing tasks using deep learning (DL) methods. However, there is a research gap in providing a road map of existing work, including limitations and challenges. This paper focuses on introducing the state-of-the-art DL models, categorized by the structure of the data they consume. The models' performance is collected, and results are provided for benchmarking on the most used datasets. Additionally, we summarize the current benchmark 3D datasets publicly available for DL training and testing. Building extraction is a popular topic in remote sensing image processing. Efficient building extraction algorithms can identify and segment building areas to provide informative data for downstream tasks. Currently, building extraction is mainly achieved by deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based on the U-shaped encoder–decoder architecture. However, the local perceptive field of the convolutional operation poses a challenge for CNNs to fully capture the semantic information of large buildings, especially in high-resolution remote sensing images. Considering the recent success of the Transformer in computer vision tasks, in this paper, first we propose a shifted-window (swin) Transformer-based encoding booster. The proposed encoding booster includes a swin Transformer pyramid containing patch merging layers for down-sampling, which enables our encoding booster to extract semantics from multi-level features at different scales. Most importantly, the receptive field is significantly expanded by the global self-attention mechanism of the swin Transformer, allowing the encoding booster to capture the large-scale semantic information effectively and transcend the limitations of CNNs. Furthermore, we integrate the encoding booster in a specially designed U-shaped network through a novel manner, named the Swin Transformer-based Encoding Booster- U-shaped Network (STEB-UNet), to achieve the feature-level fusion of local and large-scale semantics. Remarkably, compared with other Transformer-included networks, the computational complexity and memory requirement of the STEB-UNet are significantly reduced due to the swin design, making the network training much easier. Experimental results show that the STEB-UNet can effectively discriminate and extract buildings of different scales and demonstrate higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art networks on public datasets. Water features (e.g., water quantity and water quality) are one of the most important environmental factors essential to improving climate-change resilience. Remote sensing (RS) technologies empowered by artificial intelligence (AI) have become one of the most demanded strategies to automating water information extraction and thus intelligent monitoring. In this article, we provide a systematic review of the literature that incorporates artificial intelligence and computer vision methods in the water resources sector with a focus on intelligent water body extraction and water quality detection and monitoring through remote sensing. Based on this review, the main challenges of leveraging AI and RS for intelligent water information extraction are discussed, and research priorities are identified. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been very effective in collecting aerial images data for various Internet-of-Things (IoT)/smart cities applications such as search and rescue, surveillance, vehicle detection, counting, intelligent transportation systems, to name a few. However, the real-time processing of collected data on edge in the context of the Internet-of-Drones remains an open challenge because UAVs have limited energy capabilities, while computer vision techniquesconsume excessive energy and require abundant resources. This fact is even more critical when deep learning algorithms, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), are used for classification and detection. In this paper, we first propose a system architecture of computation offloading for Internet-connected drones. Then, we conduct a comprehensive experimental study to evaluate the performance in terms of energy, bandwidth, and delay of the cloud computation offloading approach versus the edge computing approach of deep learning applications in the context of UAVs. In particular, we investigate the tradeoff between the communication cost and the computation of the two candidate approaches experimentally. The main results demonstrate that the computation offloading approach allows us to provide much higher throughput (i.e., frames per second) as compared to the edge computing approach, despite the larger communication delays. Too often, the testing and evaluation of object detection, as well as the classification techniques for high-resolution remote sensing imagery, are confined to clean, discretely partitioned datasets, i.e., the closed-world model. In recent years, the performance on a number of benchmark datasets has exceeded 99% when evaluated using cross-validation techniques. However, real-world remote sensing data are truly big data, which often exceed billions of pixels. Therefore, one of the greatest challenges regarding the evaluation of machine learning models taken out of the clean laboratory setting and into the real world is the difficulty of measuring performance. It is necessary to evaluate these models on a grander scale, namely, tens of thousands of square kilometers, where it is intractable to the ground truth and the ever-changing anthropogenic surface of Earth. The ultimate goal of computer vision model development for automated analysis and broad area search and discovery is to augment and assist humans, specifically human–machine teaming for real-world tasks. In this research, various models have been trained using object classes from benchmark datasets such as UC Merced, PatternNet, RESISC-45, and MDSv2. We detail techniques to scan broad swaths of the Earth with deep convolutional neural networks. We present algorithms for localizing object detection results, as well as a methodology for the evaluation of the results of broad-area scans. Our research explores the challenges of transitioning these models out of the training–validation laboratory setting and into the real-world application domain. We show a scalable approach to leverage state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks for the search, detection, and annotation of objects within large swaths of imagery, with the ultimate goal of providing a methodology for evaluating object detection machine learning models in real-world scenarios. The OpenStreetMap (OSM) project is an open-source, community-based, user-generated street map/data service. It is the most popular project within the state of the art for crowdsourcing. Although geometrical features and tags of annotations in OSM are usually precise (particularly in metropolitan areas), there are instances where volunteer mapping is inaccurate. Despite the appeal of using OSM semantic information with remote sensing images, to train deep learning models, the crowdsourced data quality is inconsistent. High-resolution remote sensing image segmentation is a mature application in many fields, such as urban planning, updated mapping, city sensing, and others. Typically, supervised methods trained with annotated data may learn to anticipate the object location, but misclassification may occur due to noise in training data. This article combines Very High Resolution (VHR) remote sensing data with computer vision methods to deal with noisy OSM. This work deals with OSM misalignment ambiguity (positional inaccuracy) concerning satellite imagery and uses a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach to detect missing buildings in OSM. We propose a translating method to align the OSM vector data with the satellite data. This strategy increases the correlation between the imagery and the building vector data to reduce the noise in OSM data. A series of experiments demonstrate that our approach plays a significant role in (1) resolving the misalignment issue, (2) instance-semantic segmentation of buildings with missing building information in OSM (never labeled or constructed in between image acquisitions), and (3) change detection mapping. The good results of precision (0.96) and recall (0.96) demonstrate the viability of high-resolution satellite imagery and OSM for building detection/change detection using a deep learning approach. Remote sensing imagery involves capturing and examining details about the Earth's surface from a distance, often using satellites, drones, or other aerial platforms. It offers useful data with which to monitor and understand different phenomena on Earth. Vehicle detection and classification play a crucial role in various applications, including traffic monitoring, urban planning, and environmental analysis. Deep learning, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has revolutionized vehicle detection in remote sensing. This study designs an improved Chimp optimization algorithm with a DL-based vehicle detection and classification (ICOA-DLVDC) technique on RSI. The presented ICOA-DLVDC technique involves two phases: object detection and classification. For vehicle detection, the ICOA-DLVDC technique applies the EfficientDet model. Next, the detected objects can be classified by using the sparse autoencoder (SAE) model. To optimize the SAE's hyperparameters effectively, we introduce an ICOA which streamlines the parameter tuning process, accelerating convergence and enhancing the overall performance of the SAE classifier. An extensive set of experiments has been conducted to highlight the improved vehicle classification outcomes of the ICOA-DLVDC technique. The simulation values demonstrated the remarkable performance of the ICOA-DLVDC approach compared to other recent techniques, with a maximum accuracy of 99.70% and 99.50% on the VEDAI dataset and ISPRS Postdam dataset, respectively. Illegal landfills are uncontrolled disposals of waste that cause severe environmental and health risk. Discovering them as early as possible is of prominent importance for preventing hazards, such as fire pollution and leakage. Before the digital era, the only means to detect illegal waste dumps was the on site inspection of potentially suspicious sites, a procedure extremely costly and impossible to scale to a vast territory. With the advent of Earth observation technology, scanning the territory via aerial images has become possible. However, manual image interpretation remains a complex and time-consuming task that requires expert skill. Photo interpretation can be partially automated by embedding the expert knowledge within a data driven classifier trained with samples provided by human annotators. In this paper, the detection of illegal landfills is formulated as a multi-scale scene classification problem. Scene elements positioning and spatial relations constitute hints of the presence of illegal waste dumps. A dataset of ≈3000 images (20 cm resolution per pixel) was created with the help of expert photo interpreters. A combination of ResNet50 and Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) elements accounting for different object scales achieves 88% precision with an 87% of recall in a test area. Advances in deep learning and computer vision are making significant contributions to flood mapping, particularly when integrated with remotely sensed data. Although existing supervised methods, especially deep convolutional neural networks, have proved to be effective, they require intensive manual labeling of flooded pixels to train a multi-layer deep neural network that learns abstract semantic features of the input data. This research introduces a novel weakly supervised approach for pixel-wise flood mapping by leveraging multi-temporal remote sensing imagery and image processing techniques (e.g., Normalized Difference Water Index and edge detection) to create weakly labeled data. Using these weakly labeled data, a bi-temporal U-Net model is then proposed and trained for flood detection without the need for time-consuming and labor-intensive human annotations. Using floods from Hurricanes Florence and Harvey as case studies, we evaluated the performance of the proposed bi-temporal U-Net model and baseline models, such as decision tree, random forest, gradient boost, and adaptive boosting classifiers. To assess the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted a comprehensive assessment that (1) covered multiple test sites with varying degrees of urbanization, and (2) utilized both bi-temporal (i.e., pre- and post-flood) and uni-temporal (i.e., only post-flood) input. The experimental results showed that the proposed framework of weakly labeled data generation and the bi-temporal U-Net could produce near real-time urban flood maps with consistently high precision, recall, f1 score, IoU score, and overall accuracy compared with baseline machine learning algorithms. Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification is the subject of intense research in remote sensing. The tremendous success of deep learning in computer vision has recently sparked the interest in applying deep learning in hyperspectral image classification. However, most deep learning methods for hyperspectral image classification are based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). Those methods require heavy GPU memory resources and run time. Recently, another deep learning model, the transformer, has been applied for image recognition, and the study result demonstrates the great potential of the transformer network for computer vision tasks. In this paper, we propose a model for hyperspectral image classification based on the transformer, which is widely used in natural language processing. Besides, we believe we are the first to combine the metric learning and the transformer model in hyperspectral image classification. Moreover, to improve the model classification performance when the available training samples are limited, we use the 1-D convolution and Mish activation function. Pack-ice seals are key indicator species in the Southern Ocean. Their large size (2–4 m) and continent-wide distribution make them ideal candidates for monitoring programs via very-high-resolution satellite imagery. The sheer volume of imagery required, however, hampers our ability to rely on manual annotation alone. Here, we present SealNet 2.0, a fully automated approach to seal detection that couples a sea ice segmentation model to find potential seal habitats with an ensemble of semantic segmentation convolutional neural network models for seal detection. Our best ensemble attains 0.806 precision and 0.640 recall on an out-of-sample test dataset, surpassing two trained human observers. Built upon the original SealNet, it outperforms its predecessor by using annotation datasets focused on sea ice only, a comprehensive hyperparameter study leveraging substantial high-performance computing resources, and post-processing through regression head outputs and segmentation head logits at predicted seal locations. Even with a simplified version of our ensemble model, using AI predictions as a guide dramatically boosted the precision and recall of two human experts, showing potential as a training device for novice seal annotators. Like human observers, the performance of our automated approach deteriorates with terrain ruggedness, highlighting the need for statistical treatment to draw global population estimates from AI output. Storms can cause significant damage to forest areas, affecting biodiversity and infrastructure and leading to economic loss. Thus, rapid detection and mapping of windthrows are crucially important for forest management. Recent advances in computer vision have led to highly-accurate image classification algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures. In this study, we tested and implemented an algorithm based on CNNs in an ArcGIS environment for automatic detection and mapping of damaged areas. The algorithm was trained and tested on a forest area in Bavaria, Germany.. It is a based on a modified U-Net architecture that was optimized for the pixelwise classification of multispectral aerial remote sensing data. The neural network was trained on labeled damaged areas from after-storm aerial orthophotos of a ca. 109 k m 2 forest area with RGB and NIR bands and 0.2-m spatial resolution. Around 10 7 pixels of labeled data were used in the process. Once the network is trained, predictions on further datasets can be computed within seconds, depending on the size of the input raster and the computational power used. The overall accuracy on our test dataset was 92 % . During visual validation, labeling errors were found in the reference data that somewhat biased the results because the algorithm in some instance performed better than the human labeling procedure, while missing areas affected by shadows. Our results are very good in terms of precision, and the methods introduced in this paper have several additional advantages compared to traditional methods: CNNs automatically detect high- and low-level features in the data, leading to high classification accuracies, while only one after-storm image is needed in comparison to two images for approaches based on change detection. Furthermore, flight parameters do not affect the results in the same way as for approaches that require DSMs and DTMs as the classification is only based on the image data themselves, and errors occurring in the computation of DSMs and DTMs do not affect the results with respect to the z component. The integration into the ArcGIS Platform allows a streamlined workflow for forest management, as the results can be accessed by mobile devices in the field to allow for high-accuracy ground-truthing and additional mapping that can be synchronized back into the database. Our results and the provided automatic workflow highlight the potential of deep learning on high-resolution imagery and GIS for fast and efficient post-disaster damage assessment as a first step of disaster management. Deep learning methods, especially deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), have been widely used in high-resolution remote sensing image (HRSI) semantic segmentation. In literature, most successful DCNNs are artificially designed through a large number of experiments, which often consume lots of time and depend on rich domain knowledge. Recently, neural architecture search (NAS), as a direction for automatically designing network architectures, has achieved great success in different kinds of computer vision tasks. For HRSI semantic segmentation, NAS faces two major challenges: (1) The task's high complexity degree, which is caused by the pixel-by-pixel prediction demand in semantic segmentation, leads to a rapid expansion of the search space; (2) HRSI semantic segmentation often needs to exploit long-range dependency (i.e., a large spatial context), which means the NAS technique requires a lot of display memory in the optimization process and can be tough to converge. With the aforementioned considerations in mind, we propose a new decoupling NAS (DNAS) framework to automatically design the network architecture for HRSI semantic segmentation. In DNAS, a hierarchical search space with three levels is recommended: path-level, connection-level, and cell-level. To adapt to this hierarchical search space, we devised a new decoupling search optimization strategy to decrease the memory occupation. More specifically, the search optimization strategy consists of three stages: (1) a light super-net (i.e., the specific search space) in the path-level space is trained to get the optimal path coding; (2) we endowed the optimal path with various cross-layer connections and it is trained to obtain the connection coding; (3) the super-net, which is initialized by path coding and connection coding, is populated with kinds of concrete cell operators and the optimal cell operators are finally determined. It is worth noting that the well-designed search space can cover various network candidates and the optimization process can be done efficiently. Rapid global warming is catalyzing widespread permafrost degradation in the Arctic, leading to destructive land-surface subsidence that destabilizes and deforms the ground. Consequently, human-built infrastructure constructed upon permafrost is currently at major risk of structural failure. Risk assessment frameworks that attempt to study this issue assume that precise information on the location and extent of infrastructure is known. However, complete, high-quality, uniform geospatial datasets of built infrastructure that are readily available for such scientific studies are lacking. While imagery-enabled mapping can fill this knowledge gap, the small size of individual structures and vast geographical extent of the Arctic necessitate large volumes of very high spatial resolution remote sensing imagery. Transforming this 'big' imagery data into 'science-ready' information demands highly automated image analysis pipelines driven by advanced computer vision algorithms. Despite this, previous fine resolution studies have been limited to manual digitization of features on locally confined scales. Therefore, this exploratory study serves as the first investigation into fully automated analysis of sub-meter spatial resolution satellite imagery for automated detection of Arctic built infrastructure. We tasked the U-Net, a deep learning-based semantic segmentation model, with classifying different infrastructure types (residential, commercial, public, and industrial buildings, as well as roads) from commercial satellite imagery of Utqiagvik and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. We also conducted a systematic experiment to understand how image augmentation can impact model performance when labeled training data is limited. When optimal augmentation methods were applied, the U-Net achieved an average F1 score of 0.83. Overall, our experimental findings show that the U-Net-based workflow is a promising method for automated Arctic built infrastructure detection that, combined with existing optimized workflows, such as MAPLE, could be expanded to map a multitude of infrastructure types spanning the pan-Arctic. Dense matching plays a crucial role in computer vision and remote sensing, to rapidly provide stereo products using inexpensive hardware. Along with the development of deep learning, the Guided Aggregation Network (GA-Net) achieves state-of-the-art performance via the proposed Semi-Global Guided Aggregation layers and reduces the use of costly 3D convolutional layers. To solve the problem of GA-Net requiring large GPU memory consumption, we design a pyramid architecture to modify the model. Starting from a downsampled stereo input, the disparity is estimated and continuously refined through the pyramid levels. Thus, the disparity search is only applied for a small size of stereo pair and then confined within a short residual range for minor correction, leading to highly reduced memory usage and runtime. Tests on close-range, aerial, and satellite data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significantly higher efficiency (around eight times faster consuming only 20–40% GPU memory) and comparable results with GA-Net on remote sensing data. Thanks to this coarse-to-fine estimation, we successfully process remote sensing datasets with very large disparity ranges, which could not be processed with GA-Net due to GPU memory limitations. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), which applies light in the formation of a pulsed laser to estimate the distance between the LiDAR sensor and objects, is an effective remote sensing technology. Many applications use LiDAR including autonomous vehicles, robotics, and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). The 3D point cloud classification is now a hot research topic with the evolution of LiDAR technology. This research aims to provide a high performance and compatible real-world data method for 3D point cloud classification. More specifically, we introduce a novel framework for 3D point cloud classification, namely, GSV-NET, which uses Gaussian Supervector and enhancing region representation. GSV-NET extracts and combines both global and regional features of the 3D point cloud to further enhance the information of the point cloud features for the 3D point cloud classification. Firstly, we input the Gaussian Supervector description into a 3D wide-inception convolution neural network (CNN) structure to define the global feature. Secondly, we convert the regions of the 3D point cloud into color representation and capture region features with a 2D wide-inception network. These extracted features are inputs of a 1D CNN architecture. We evaluate the proposed framework on the point cloud dataset: ModelNet and the LiDAR dataset: Sydney. The ModelNet dataset was developed by Princeton University (New Jersey, United States), while the Sydney dataset was created by the University of Sydney (Sydney, Australia). Today, energy issues are more important than ever. Because of the importance of environmental concerns, clean and renewable energies such as wind power have been most welcomed globally, especially in developing countries. Worldwide development of these technologies leads to the use of intelligent systems for monitoring and maintenance purposes. Besides, deep learning as a new area of machine learning is sharply developing. Its strong performance in computer vision problems has conducted us to provide a high accuracy intelligent machine vision system based on deep learning to estimate the wind turbine angular velocity, remotely. This velocity along with other information such as pitch angle and yaw angle can be used to estimate the wind farm energy production. For this purpose, we have used SSD (Single Shot Multi-Box Detector) object detection algorithm and some specific classification methods based on DenseNet, SqueezeNet, ResNet50, and InceptionV3 models. Forage dry matter is the main source of nutrients in the diet of ruminant animals. Thus, this trait is evaluated in most forage breeding programs with the objective of increasing the yield. Novel solutions combining unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and computer vision are crucial to increase the efficiency of forage breeding programs, to support high-throughput phenotyping (HTP), aiming to estimate parameters correlated to important traits. The main goal of this study was to propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach using UAV-RGB imagery to estimate dry matter yield traits in a guineagrass breeding program. For this, an experiment composed of 330 plots of full-sib families and checks conducted at Embrapa Beef Cattle, Brazil, was used. The image dataset was composed of images obtained with an RGB sensor embedded in a Phantom 4 PRO. The traits leaf dry matter yield (LDMY) and total dry matter yield (TDMY) were obtained by conventional agronomic methodology and considered as the ground-truth data. Different CNN architectures were analyzed, such as AlexNet, ResNeXt50, DarkNet53, and two networks proposed recently for related tasks named MaCNN and LF-CNN. Pretrained AlexNet and ResNeXt50 architectures were also studied. Ten-fold cross-validation was used for training and testing the model. Estimates of DMY traits by each CNN architecture were considered as new HTP traits to compare with real traits. Pearson correlation coefficient r between real and HTP traits ranged from 0.62 to 0.79 for LDMY and from 0.60 to 0.76 for TDMY; root square mean error (RSME) ranged from 286.24 to 366.93 kg·ha − 1 for LDMY and from 413.07 to 506.56 kg·ha − 1 for TDMY. All the CNNs generated heritable HTP traits, except LF-CNN for LDMY and AlexNet for TDMY. Genetic correlations between real and HTP traits were high but varied according to the CNN architecture. HTP trait from ResNeXt50 pretrained achieved the best results for indirect selection regardless of the dry matter trait.
