Nucleic acid quantification, allowing us to accurately know the copy number of target nucleic acids, is significant for diagnosis, food safety, agricultural production, and environmental protection. However, current digital quantification methods require expensive instruments or complicated microfluidic chips, making it difficult to popularize in the point-of-care detection. Paper is an inexpensive and readily available material. In this study, we propose a simple and cost-effective paper membrane-based digital loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for nucleic acid quantification. In the presence of DNA fluorescence dyes, the high background signals will cover up the amplicons-formed bright spots. To reduce the background fluorescence signals, a quencher-fluorophore duplex was introduced in LAMP primers to replace non-specific fluorescence dyes. After that, the amplicons-formed spots on the paper membrane can be observed; thus, the target DNA can be quantified by counting the spots. Take Vibrio parahaemolyticus DNA detection as an instance, a good linear relationship is obtained between the light spots and the copy numbers of DNA. The paper membrane-based digital LAMP detection can detect 100 copies target DNA per reaction within 30 min. Overall, the proposed nucleic acid quantification method has the advantages of a simple workflow, short sample-in and answer-out time, low cost, and high signal-to-noise, which is promising for application in resourced limited areas. Mulching with recycled paper has the potential to be used in agricultural production and can be adopted in strawberry cultivation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics, water consumption and technical coefficients of strawberry cultivated with recycled paper as mulch. The treatments consisted of strawberry cultivation in lysimeters with recycled paper mulch and without soil cover. The recycled paper used was 187 μm-thick. The irrigation system was installed with drippers whose flow rate was 2 L h−1. Strawberry irrigation requirements were 317 and 394 mm, with and without mulch, respectively. Mulching with recycled paper did not have a significant effect on the average number of fruits, fresh fruit mass, fruit waste per plant, average fruit yield and water productivity. In relation to the technical coefficients, maximum values of the evaporation coefficient (Ke) of 0.40 (calculated with the evapotranspiration of the grass—L) and 0.28 (calculated with the Penman–Monteith ETo—PM) were obtained for OPM. The Kc values for the initial and full development stages were 0.31 and 0.84 (L) and 0.24 and 0.66 (PM), respectively. NDVI can be used to estimate strawberry Kc values. Climate-change-induced unpredictable weather patterns are adversely affecting global agricultural productivity, posing a significant threat to sustainability and food security, particularly in developing regions. Wealthier nations can invest substantially in measures to mitigate climate change's impact on food production, but economically disadvantaged countries face challenges due to limited resources and heightened susceptibility to climate change. To enhance climate resilience in agriculture, technological solutions such as the Internet of Things (IoT) are being explored. This paper introduces a digital twin as a technological solution for monitoring and controlling temperatures in a greenhouse tunnel situated in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The study incorporates an aeroponics trial within the tunnel, analysing temperature variations caused by the fan and wet wall temperature regulatory systems. The research develops an analytical model and employs a support vector regression algorithm as an empirical model, successfully achieving accurate predictions. The analytical model demonstrated a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.93 °C and an R 2 value of 0.8, while the empirical model outperformed it with an RMSE of 1.76 °C and an R 2 value of 0.9 for a one-hour-ahead simulation. The strong airflow beneath a rotary drone generates a wind vortex within the rice canopy; precise control of the wind vortex distance and wind vortex area can improve pesticide utilization efficiency. This paper calculates the flight parameter curve based on the wind vortex target from the wind vortex target parameter control model of the four-rotor plant protection drone, designs a flight control system using a Cube Orange flight controller and a Jetson AGX Xavier onboard computer, and implements flight parameter control using both PID control and fuzzy control algorithms. Experimental results indicate that when using PID control and fuzzy control, the average deviation values of UAV flight altitude and speed are 0.08 m, 0.08 m/s, 0.06 m, and 0.08 m/s, respectively. When using PID control, the average distance and area errors of the target downwind and upwind are 0.17 m and 0.37 m2 and 0.20 m and 0.46 m2, respectively. The corresponding values for fuzzy control are 0.12 m, 0.38 m2, 0.09 m, and 0.31 m2. In the twelve voyage experiments, the target parameter variance using fuzzy control was relatively smaller for eight voyages compared to PID control, which had a smaller variance for four voyages. On the whole, the effect of fuzzy control is superior. The wind vortex control method proposed in this paper can effectively enable precise pesticide spraying by drones. Pest control is an important guarantee for agricultural production. Pests are mostly light-avoiding and often gather on the bottom of crop leaves. However, spraying agricultural machinery mostly adopts top-down spraying, which suffers from low pesticide utilization and poor insect removal effect. Therefore, the upward spraying mode and intelligent nozzle have gradually become the research hotspot of precision agriculture. This paper designs a leaf-bottom pest control robot with adaptive chassis and adjustable selective nozzle. Firstly, the adaptive chassis is designed based on the MacPherson suspension, which uses shock absorption to drive the track to swing within a 30° angle. Secondly, a new type of cone angle adjustable selective nozzle was developed, which achieves adaptive selective precision spraying under visual guidance. Then, based on a convolutional block attention module (CBAM), the multi-CBAM-YOLOv5s network model was improved to achieve a 70% recognition rate of leaf-bottom spotted bad point in video streams. Finally, functional tests of the adaptive chassis and the adjustable selective spraying system were conducted. The data indicate that the adaptive chassis can adapt to diverse single-ridge requirements of soybeans and corn while protecting the ridge slopes. The selective spraying system achieves 70% precision in pesticide application, greatly reducing the use of pesticides. The scheme explores a ridge-friendly leaf-bottom pest control plan, providing a technical reference for improving spraying effect, reducing pesticide usage, and mitigating environmental pollution. Avocado is one of the most commercialized and profitable fruits in the international market. Its cultivation and production are centered in countries characterized by tropical and subtropical climatic conditions, many of them with emerging economies. Moreover, the use of technology is key to agricultural production improvement strategies. Using avocado crop data to forecast the potential impacts of biotic and abiotic factors, combined with smart farming technologies, growers can apply measures during a single production phase to reduce the risks caused by pests and weather variations. Therefore, this paper aims to distinguish the most relevant variables related to agroclimatic and phytosanitary events in avocado crops, their incidence on production and risk management, as well as the emerging technologies used for the identification and analysis of pests and diseases in avocados. A scientific literature search was performed, and the first search found 608 studies, and once the screening process was applied, 37 papers were included in this review. In the results, three research questions were answered that described the pests and diseases with high impact on avocado production, along with the data sources and the principal enabling technologies used in the identification of agroclimatic and phytosanitary events in avocados. One of the effective ways to crack the "Three Rural Issues" and promote rural revitalization is to improve agricultural labor productivity (ALP). However, at this stage, improving China's ALP is still facing many obstacles and bottlenecks. Promoting migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship is an important breakthrough point for solving this problem. This paper regards the pilot policy of migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship as a quasi-natural experiment and empirically investigates the influence of migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship on ALP and explores its potential mechanism and heterogeneity using county area panel data from 2011–2019. It found the following: Firstly, the policy of migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship significantly increases ALP. Secondly, migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship indirectly leads to a rise in ALP through the promotion of agricultural mechanization production. Thirdly, the heterogeneity test demonstrates that migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship purposes have a significant influence in enhancing ALP in the eastern areas, plains areas and non-agricultural strong areas. The findings of this paper not only provide an important real-world basis for the government to further support migrant workers returning home for entrepreneurship but also provide useful policy insights for the modernization and development of agriculture and rural areas. The increasing global warming trend has resulted in the mass loss of most glaciers. The Urumqi Vally, located in the dry and cold zone of China, and its widely dispersed glaciers are significant to the regional ecological environment, oasis economic development, and industrial and agricultural production. This is representative of glaciers in Middle Asia and represents one of the world's longest observed time series of glaciers, beginning in 1959. The Urumqi Headwater Glacier No. 1 (UHG-1) has a dominant presence in the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). This paper supplies a comprehensive analysis of past studies and future modeling of glacier changes in the Urumqi Valley. It has received insufficient attention in the past, and the mass balance of UHG-1 was used to verify that the geodetic results and the OGGM model simulation results are convincing. The main conclusions are: The area of 48.68 ± 4.59 km2 delineated by 150 glaciers in 1958 decreased to 21.61 ± 0.27 km2 delineated by 108 glaciers in 2022, with a reduction of 0.47 ± 0.04 km2·a−1 (0.96% a−1 in 1958–2022). The glacier mass balance by geodesy is −0.69 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1 in 2000–2022, which is just deviating from the measured result (−0.66 m w.e.a−1), but the geodetic result in this paper can be enough to reflect the glacier changes (−0.65 ± 0.11 m w.e.a−1) of the URB in 2000–2022. The future loss rate of area and volume will undergo a rapid and then decelerating process, with the fastest and slowest inflection points occurring around 2035 and 2070, respectively. High temperatures and large precipitation in summer accelerate glacier loss, and the corresponding lag period of glacier change to climate is about 2–3 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant height is a crucial indicator of crop growth. Rapid measurement of crop height facilitates the implementation and management of planting strategies, ensuring optimal crop production quality and yield. This paper presents a low-cost method for the rapid measurement of multiple lettuce heights, developed using an improved YOLOv8n-seg model and the stacking characteristics of planes in depth images. First, we designed a lightweight instance segmentation model based on YOLOv8n-seg by enhancing the model architecture and reconstructing the channel dimension distribution. This model was trained on a small-sample dataset augmented through random transformations. Secondly, we proposed a method to detect and segment the horizontal plane. This method leverages the stacking characteristics of the plane, as identified in the depth image histogram from an overhead perspective, allowing for the identification of planes parallel to the camera's imaging plane. Subsequently, we evaluated the distance between each plane and the centers of the lettuce contours to select the cultivation substrate plane as the reference for lettuce bottom height. Finally, the height of multiple lettuce plants was determined by calculating the height difference between the top and bottom of each plant. The experimental results demonstrated that the improved model achieved a 25.56% increase in processing speed, along with a 2.4% enhancement in mean average precision compared to the original YOLOv8n-seg model. The average accuracy of the plant height measurement algorithm reached 94.339% in hydroponics and 91.22% in pot cultivation scenarios, with absolute errors of 7.39 mm and 9.23 mm, similar to the sensor's depth direction error. With images downsampled by a factor of 1/8, the highest processing speed recorded was 6.99 frames per second (fps), enabling the system to process an average of 174 lettuce targets per second. Crop diseases and pests are important factors restricting agricultural production. Traditional pest detection methods are mainly targeted at a single pest species, which is difficult to meet the needs of multi-target identification and rapid response in real scenes. Therefore, this paper improves the YOLOv8n model for efficient multi-target pest detection. Two feature enhancement modules, EMSFEM and AFEM_SIE, are proposed in this paper. The EMSFEM module enriches the model's receptive field through the combination of multi-scale asymmetric convolution kernel and different expansion rates and can better extract the width, height, texture, and edge information of the target. The AFEM_SIE module captures the similarities and differences between upper and lower features through spatial information exchange and enhances feature representation through inter-feature information exchange. In addition, an improved feature fusion operation, Concat_Weighting, is proposed on the basis of Concat. The module uses the learned weights to carry out channel weighting and feature graph weighting for input features, which realizes more flexible and effective feature fusion. The results of experiments conducted on the publicly available large-scale crop pest and disease dataset IP102 show that the performance of the AEC-YOLOv8n model is significantly improved compared with the original YOLOv8n model, with mAP50 increased by 8.9%, accuracy increased by 6.8%, and recall rate increased by 6.3%. The AEC-YOLOv8n model proposed in this study can effectively identify and deal with a variety of crop pests and has achieved the best detection accuracy on the IP102 dataset, which has high application value. The increasing population, its requirements for food, and the environmental impact of the excessive use of inputs make crop production a pressing challenge. Integrated nutrient management (INM) has emerged as a critical solution by maximizing nutrient availability and utilization for crops and vegetables. This review paper highlights the potential benefits of INM for various vegetables and field crops and explores the conceptual strategies, components, and principles underlying this approach. Studies have shown that a wide range of vegetables and field crops benefit from INM, in terms of increased yield and improvements in yield attributes, nutrient contents and uptake, growth parameters, and various physiological and biochemical characteristics. This paper discusses biostimulants, their categories, and their impact on plant propagation, growth, photosynthesis, seed germination, fruit set, and quality. Additionally, this review explores modern sustainable soilless production techniques such as hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics. These cultivation methods highlight the advancements of controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) and its contribution to nutrient management, food security and minimizing the environmental footprint. The review concludes by proposing methods and fostering discussions on INM's future development, while acknowledging the challenges associated with its adoption. The problem of high grain production costs, which is not conducive to sustainable agricultural development and food security, is highlighted in the context of China's "large country and small household farmers". Reducing the grain production costs through factor allocation and organizational drive has become particularly important. Based on 768-grain peasant households in China, this paper uses OLS regression and robust regression to examine the effects of agricultural factor inputs and cooperatives on grain production costs. It analyzes the synergistic and substitution effects between farmers' factor inputs and cooperatives in grain production. It was found that: (1) in farmers' grain production, reductions in the grain production costs can be realized by expanding the area under cultivation, improving the use of agricultural machinery, and increasing technological inputs; (2) a reduction in the grain production costs can also be realized through cooperatives driving farmers into grain production; (3) cooperatives can provide farmers with various types of agricultural production services in grain production and cooperative-driven substitution effects between the agricultural factor inputs of farm households. The findings of this paper contribute to the enrichment of research in the field of agricultural production and are important for enhancing agricultural sustainability and reducing grain production costs. The accurate identification of crop aphids is an important aspect of improving agricultural productivity. Aphids are characterised by small targets and a body colour similar to their surroundings. Even the most advanced detectors can experience problems such as low detection accuracy and a high number of missed detections. In this paper, a multi-stream target detection model is proposed for fast and accurate detection of crop aphids in complex backgrounds. First, inspired by the human visual system, we propose a bionic attention (BA) approach. Unlike previous strategies, we do not improve the model but input additional category labels as bionic information streams into the network at the network input stage to support mainstream recognition, which improves the detection effect. In addition, through web crawling and manual screening, we construct an aphid dataset containing 2059 images, named IP_Aphids, based on IP102. In this paper, we combine the proposed BA with a number of classical target detection models, including YOLOv5s, YOLOv7-tiny, YOLOv8n, SSD, and faster R-CNN, and we also compare the BA with the classical attention mechanisms CBAM and SE. This approach allows the effectiveness of the method to be evaluated from multiple perspectives. The results show that combining the bionic information flow of BA with the original mainstream information flow as inputs to the five target detection models improves the mAP by 2.2%, 7%, 2.7%, 1.78%, and 1.12%, respectively, compared to the models using only the original inputs. In addition, the mAP of the YOLOv8n_BA model is higher than that of the YOLOv8n, YOLOv8n_CBAM, and YOLOv8n_SE models by 4.6%, 3.3%, and 2.7%, respectively. This indicates that the BA proposed in this study is significantly better than the classical attention to improve crop aphid detection, which provides a reference for crop aphid-related research. Food security has become a concerning issue because of global climate change and increasing populations. Agricultural production is considered one of the key factors that affects food security. The changing climate has negatively affected agricultural production, which accelerates food shortages. The supply of agricultural commodities can be heavily influenced by climate change, which leads to climate-induced agricultural productivity shocks impacting crop prices. This paper systematically reviews publications over the past ten years on the factors affecting the prices of a wide range of crops across the globe. This review presents a critical view of these factors in the context of climate change. This paper applies a systematic approach by determining the appropriate works to review with defined inclusion criteria. From this, groups of key factors affecting crop prices are found. This study finds evidence that crop prices have been both positively and negatively affected by a range of factors such as elements of climate change, biofuel, and economic factors. However, the general trend is towards increasing crop prices due to deceasing yields over time. Climate change-related impacts have hampered the productivity of agricultural lands in recent times, affecting food security globally. Novel technology-based agricultural production systems such as controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) are a way to reduce the impact of climatic variation and pests that harm current global crop production and ensure consistent crop development. These systems often use artificial lighting and soilless mediums to produce crops. This meta-analysis has investigated the key influencing factors on crop production within these systems, using previous studies on lettuce (the most cultivated crop in these systems) to understand what affects yield within CEA. This analysis has found that on average, CEA systems yield twice that of field-based agriculture (3.68 kg m−2 vs. 1.88 kg m−2), with the most influencing factors being the variety of cultivars grown, the season, the nutrient delivery method, and the lighting type. The cultivation time for this study was 40 days, with 94% of papers having trial periods of 70 days or less, much lower than field-based agriculture (60–120 days). Vertical farming (stacked vertical CEA cultivation) studies were found to especially drive up yield per area (6.88 kg m−2). The results of this meta-analysis are useful for starting to understand the key influencing factors on CEA growth and highlight the breadth of research ongoing in the CEA industry. Promoting farmers' participation in rural industrial integration and driving farmers' agricultural production with cooperatives and agribusinesses are conducive to realizing cost saving, efficiency, and green production and guaranteeing food security and sustainable agricultural development. Based on the microsurvey data of 1039 grain farmers in Henan Province, China in 2022, this paper examined the impact of contractual choices of farmers' participation in rural industrial integration on agricultural green productivity while analyzing the mechanism of action by using OLS regression, a causal mediation analysis of instrumental variables, propensity score matching, and two-stage least squares (2SLS). The study found that: (1) farmers' participation in a contract, driven by cooperatives or agribusinesses to carry out agricultural production, is conducive to improving their agricultural green productivity, but the effect of each main body to drive farmers varies; (2) farmers' participation in a contract, through cooperatives or agribusinesses to obtain all kinds of agricultural production services—such as agricultural machinery services, agricultural supply services, and technical guidance services—improves the use of agricultural machinery, the standardization of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural materials' use, increases technical guidance, and improves agricultural green productivity. The findings of this paper suggest policy and practical implications for safeguarding food security and promoting sustainable agriculture, as well as enriching research on agricultural productivity. Given the 'subsistence' character of smallholder production, agricultural production diversification is often seen as an effective strategy for smallholders to improve their diets' diversity and nutritional status, yet the existing evidence remains inadequate. The study applies bibliometric data from the "Web of Science" database to synthesize 46 papers from developing countries to explore the relationship between production diversity, dietary diversity, and nutrition in smallholder households. The study identifies the most influential journals, authors, organizations, and countries and reveals research themes related to agricultural production and food security. This data analysis can help researchers target potential collaborators and access influential literature in agricultural production diversity and dietary diversity research. In addition, the results showed that agricultural production diversity potentially influences households' dietary diversity, with mixed results: Agricultural production diversification is the primary way to improve food and nutritional security among smallholder families with low socio-economic status, inaccessible transportation, and poverty; market access and trade have more potential to improve dietary diversity among smallholder households with well-developed markets and higher income levels; the significant measures of agricultural production diversity include Crop Counts, FGPD, SI, and SWDI; the significant measures of dietary diversity include HDDS and IDDS. Sturgeon farming poses an interesting decision: give priority to highly prized caviar or meat. Indeed, sturgeons are mainly reared in aquaculture to produce caviar. However, the economic profitability of a sturgeon farm also depends on the existence of a meat market. Meat is still an important product for sturgeon farmers once the stock of caviar-producing females has been established. This paper takes a case study approach and analyses how an Italian producer addresses the trade-off, adopting a methodology that measures the value of the economic productivity of production inputs, e.g., the measure of the profitability of the inputs, and compares them with the costs of the inputs and the prices of the outputs. This analysis is the first attempt, to our knowledge, to adopt an economic analysis to address this choice problem, based on a very representative case study. This helps monitor whether the farm's production choices are economically efficient and effective and whether and how those can be improved. The results show that the farm maximizes profit but does not reach its optimal production level. Wheat is one of the most crucial food crops globally, with its yield directly impacting global food security. The accurate detection and counting of wheat spikes is essential for monitoring wheat growth, predicting yield, and managing fields. However, the current methods face challenges, such as spike size variation, shading, weed interference, and dense distribution. Conventional machine learning approaches have partially addressed these challenges, yet they are hampered by limited detection accuracy, complexities in feature extraction, and poor robustness under complex field conditions. In this paper, we propose an improved YOLOv10 algorithm that significantly enhances the model's feature extraction and detection capabilities. This is achieved by introducing a bidirectional feature pyramid network (BiFPN), a separated and enhancement attention module (SEAM), and a global context network (GCNet). BiFPN leverages both top-down and bottom-up bidirectional paths to achieve multi-scale feature fusion, improving performance in detecting targets of various scales. SEAM enhances feature representation quality and model performance in complex environments by separately augmenting the attention mechanism for channel and spatial features. GCNet captures long-range dependencies in the image through the global context block, enabling the model to process complex information more accurately. The experimental results demonstrate that our method achieved a precision of 93.69%, a recall of 91.70%, and a mean average precision (mAP) of 95.10% in wheat spike detection, outperforming the benchmark YOLOv10 model by 2.02% in precision, 2.92% in recall, and 1.56% in mAP. Additionally, the coefficient of determination (R2) between the detected and manually counted wheat spikes was 0.96, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.57 and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 4.09, indicating strong correlation and high accuracy. The goal of farmers operating in a market economy is to maximize profit. In view of the changing political situation, the main social interest, in addition to food security, should be energy security. Here is a refined version of that sentence: This article examines the production efficiency of selected crops grown in the EU and how well their production can ensure both the economic security of the producers, i.e., the farmers, and Europe's energy security. In addition, it aims to determine which costs incurred in the production process have the greatest impact on productivity. The paper uses data obtained from the Cash Crop agricultural benchmarking database, covering 19 crops and 39 cost categories for each crop. The data (averaged for 2019–2021) came from 30 farms located in 11 EU member states. The DEA method and stepwise multiple regression were used. Research has shown that crops are already being grown in Europe that provide high energy efficiency in production without compromising farm performance (including oats, peas, and winter rye). Moreover, improving the involvement of certain inputs results in improved production efficiency (e.g., through spending on agricultural consulting services). In addition, crop economic efficiency, as assessed by profit with and without subsidies, was found to be strongly correlated with production efficiency. This could indicate that subsidies do not play a key role in farm efficiency within the EU. Crop productivity remains a key factor in achieving economic and energy efficiency. Improving agricultural productivity is essential due to rapid population growth, making early detection of crop diseases crucial. Although deep learning shows promise in smart agriculture, practical applications for identifying wheat diseases in complex backgrounds are limited. In this paper, we propose CropNet, a hybrid method that utilizes Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) imaging and a transfer learning approach combined with shallow convolutional neural networks (CNN) for further feature refinement. To develop our customized model, we conducted an extensive search for the optimal deep learning architecture. Our approach involves freezing the pre-trained model for feature extraction and adding a custom trainable CNN layer. Unlike traditional transfer learning, which typically uses trainable dense layers, our method integrates a trainable CNN, deepening the architecture. We argue that pre-trained features in transfer learning are better suited for a custom shallow CNN followed by a fully connected layer, rather than being fed directly into fully connected layers. We tested various architectures for pre-trained models including EfficientNetB0 and B2, DenseNet, ResNet50, MobileNetV2, MobileNetV3-Small, and Inceptionv3. Our approach combines the strengths of pre-trained models with the flexibility of custom architecture design, offering efficiency, effective feature extraction, customization options, reduced overfitting, and differential learning rates. It distinguishes itself from classical transfer learning techniques, which typically fine-tune the entire pre-trained network. Our aim is to provide a lightweight model suitable for resource-constrained environments, capable of delivering outstanding results. CropNet achieved 99.80% accuracy in wheat disease detection with reduced training time and computational cost. Sustainable management of potassium nutrition in alfalfa crop production is one of the major key factors for achieving optimum seed and biomass yields. An inappropriate supply of mineral potassium nutrition in alfalfa production could result in a decrease in biomass and grain yield production, leading to luxury consumption with cost implications. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial leguminous forage crop known for its high protein content, nutritive value, biomass yield production, soil-improving abilities, and livestock feed. Potassium nutrition plays a crucial role in alfalfa production by influencing several physiological processes essential for biomass yield, growth, development, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and stress tolerance. Although several studies have been conducted regarding the role of potassium nutrition in agriculture productivity, only limited research has focused on crop-specific impacts. Therefore, this paper reviews (i) the significant role potassium nutrition plays in alfalfa production along with its implications for quality, yield, growth, and resistance to abiotic stress; (ii) the factors affecting the availability, absorption, and transport of potassium; (iii) the source of potassium and the consequences of inadequate availability; and (iv) highlights some strategies for mitigating potassium nutrient deficiency to optimize alfalfa productivity and sustainability in agricultural systems. The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is an evergreen tree that occupies 19% of the woody crop area and is cultivated in 67 countries on five continents. The largest olive production region is concentrated in the Mediterranean basin, where the olive tree has had an enormous economic, cultural, and environmental impact since the 7th century BC. In the Mediterranean region, salinity stands out as one of the main abiotic stress factors significantly affecting agricultural production. Moreover, climate change is expected to lead to increased salinization in this region, threatening olive productivity. Salt stress causes combined damage by osmotic stress and ionic toxicity, restricting olive growth and interfering with multiple metabolic processes. A large variability in salinity tolerance among olive cultivars has been described. This paper aims to synthesize information from the published literature on olive adaptations to salt stress and its importance in salinity tolerance. The paper focused on the Xining marginal area, providing the concept of land use competitive advantage, employing the PLUS and PFCI model to simulate production–living–ecological (PLE) land in 2030, and revealing the relationship between regional land interactions and sustainable land allocation. The results indicate that the following: (1) By 2030, the land use of the Xining marginal area is primarily production and ecological land, with approximately 0.1% of living land; however, living and production land will increase while ecological land will decrease in general, and the growth momentum of urban and other living space in government-seated regions is stronger. (2) The PLE land does not exhibit a piecemeal expansion pattern, as it is influenced by mountains and rivers. Agricultural production land and grassland ecological land have advantages for development, whereas urban living land has just development potential. (3) Developing the corresponding lands in the dominant regions can result in sustainable land allocation, and five nexus approaches are proposed for the sustainable allocation of PLE land in the Xining marginal region. With a predominantly humid tropical climate and a large area for expanding agricultural activities, Angola has in principle favorable conditions for bioenergy production. The focus of this study was to evaluate the availability of suitable land for producing sugarcane. This crop is highly efficient in converting solar energy into biomass for energy purposes in Angola. To this end, this paper outlines a method for data collection, processing, and analysis divided into three sections. The first section uses the GAEZ (Global Agroecological Zones) database and QGIS (Quantum GIS) software (version 3.22.5) to assess land availability for sugarcane cultivation in Angola, classifying the regions' suitability into four levels. The second section supplements this with data from the FAOSTAT database, systematically excluding areas with restrictions, such as protected zones, land already used for other crops, and regions unsuitable for sugarcane. Finally, the third section employs an agricultural yield model to estimate the potential yield of sugarcane based on climatic parameters and the amount of bioenergy (ethanol and bioelectricity) able to be produced in the available land. Under these criteria, this study identified the existence of 6.3 Mha in lands of good agricultural suitability, with water resources, corresponding to 5% of the Angolan territory, distributed in seven provinces of the country, especially in the provinces of Cuando Cubango and Cunene, where 85% of the very suitable land under irrigation is located. Adopting a model of agricultural productivity, assuming irrigation and adequate agricultural practices, such area could produce approximately 956 million tons of sugarcane annually, which is significantly higher than the current production in this country. This amount of feedstock processed using current technology could potentially produce 81.3 GL of ethanol and 176.9 TWh of electricity with low GHG emissions per year, which is able to mitigate, as a whole, circa 60.3 MtCO2-eq/year by displacing gasoline in light vehicles and diesel and natural gas consumed in power generation. Precipitation patterns are critical for understanding the hydrological and climatological dynamics of any region. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean sea, with its diverse topography and climatic conditions, serves as an ideal case study for analyzing precipitation data, to gain insights into regional water resources, agricultural productivity, and climate change impacts. This paper employs advanced statistical physics methods, particularly Tsallis q-statistics, to analyze sub-hourly precipitation data from 2002 to 2023, provided by the Sicilian Agrometeorological Informative System (SIAS). We investigate several critical variables related to rainfall events, including duration, depth, maximum record, and inter-event time. The study spans two decades (2002–2012 and 2013–2023), analyzing the distributions of relevant variables. Additionally, we examine the simple returns of these variables to identify significant temporal changes, fitting these returns with q-Gaussian distributions. Our findings reveal the scale-invariant nature of precipitation events, the presence of long-range interactions, and memory effects, characteristic of complex environmental processes. Obstacle avoidance operations of tractors can cause parts of land to be unavailable for planting crops, which represents a reduction in land utilization. However, land utilization is significant to the increase in agricultural productivity. Traditional obstacle avoidance path planning methods mostly focus on automatic tractor navigation with small errors, ignoring the decrease in land utilization due to obstacle avoidance operations. To address the problem, this paper proposed an obstacle avoidance path planning method based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Bezier curve. In this paper, a third-order Bezier curve was used to plot the obstacle avoidance path, and the range of control points for the third-order Bezier curve was determined according to the global path and the location of the obstacle. To target the navigation error and land utilization problems, GA was used to search for the optimal point from the selection range of the control point under multiple constraints for automatic tractor navigation such as the obstacle collision avoidance, the minimum turning radius, and the maximum turning angle. Finally, the optimal obstacle avoidance path was determined based on the selected control points to minimize the navigation error and maximize land utilization. Accurate delineation of individual agricultural plots, the foundational units for agriculture-based activities, is crucial for effective government oversight of agricultural productivity and land utilization. To improve the accuracy of plot segmentation in high-resolution remote sensing images, the paper collects GF-2 satellite remote sensing images, uses ArcGIS10.3.1 software to establish datasets, and builds UNet, SegNet, DeeplabV3+, and TransUNet neural network frameworks, respectively, for experimental analysis. Then, the TransUNet network with the best segmentation effects is optimized in both the residual module and the skip connection to further improve its performance for plot segmentation in high-resolution remote sensing images. This article introduces Deformable ConvNets in the residual module to improve the original ResNet50 feature extraction network and combines the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) at the skip connection to calculate and improve the skip connection steps. Experimental results indicate that the optimized remote sensing plot segmentation algorithm based on the TransUNet network achieves an Accuracy of 86.02%, a Recall of 83.32%, an F1-score of 84.67%, and an Intersection over Union (IOU) of 86.90%. Compared to the original TransUNet network for remote sensing land parcel segmentation, whose F1-S is 81.94% and whose IoU is 69.41%, the optimized TransUNet network has significantly improved the performance of remote sensing land parcel segmentation, which verifies the effectiveness and reliability of the plot segmentation algorithm. The non-judicious use of water at the farm level in traditional irrigation application methods is a present-day concern across the world that can be resolved by enhancing application efficiency through the adoption of advanced irrigation techniques. Sprinkler irrigation is a method that has high application efficiency, which can be further increased when coupled with automation toward precision irrigation. The objectives of this review are to summarize the main aspects of sprinkler and precision irrigation and their development, scope, and future prospects specifically in Asian countries. In this paper, a modified methodology, inspired by PRISMA guidelines, was used to explore the available literature to summarize the existing knowledge in the field. Regarding the technological aspects of the analyzed works, it became evident that sprinkler systems are an efficient method to not only irrigate crops (with 39% water saving) but also for the application of fertilizers with higher efficiency (>35%) and water productivity (>14.1%) compared with gravity irrigation systems. Moreover, this paper highlights the prominent features of precision irrigation for maximizing agricultural productivity. The use of sprinkler irrigation with precision applications using automation with a sensor-based mechanism for field data collection, data transformation, data analysis, and operation of IoT-based automatic solenoid valves can save 20–30% more irrigation water and increase crop yield by 20–27%. In agricultural production, rapid and accurate detection of peach blossom bloom plays a crucial role in yield prediction, and is the foundation for automatic thinning. The currently available manual operation-based detection and counting methods are extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive, and are prone to human error. In response to the above issues, this paper proposes a natural environment peach blossom detection model based on the YOLOv5 model. First, a cascaded network is used to add an output layer specifically for small target detection on the basis of the original three output layers. Second, a combined context extraction module (CAM) and feature refinement module (FSM) are added. Finally, the network clusters and statistically analyzes the range of multi-scale channel elements using the K-means++ algorithm, obtaining candidate box sizes that are suitable for the dataset. A novel bounding box regression loss function (SIoU) is used to fuse the directional information between the real box and the predicted box to improve detection accuracy. The experimental results show that, compared with the original YOLOv5s model, our model has correspondingly improved AP values for identifying three different peach blossom shapes, namely, bud, flower, and falling flower, by 7.8%, 10.1%, and 3.4%, respectively, while the final mAP value for peach blossom recognition increases by 7.1%. Good results are achieved in the detection of peach blossom flowering volume. The proposed model provides an effective method for obtaining more intuitive and accurate data sources during the process of peach yield prediction, and lays a theoretical foundation for the development of thinning robots. Agricultural insurance is a risk management tool developed to guarantee regional production and national food security. Based on survey data from 629 households in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, China, this paper examines the impact of agricultural insurance on farmers' planting structure. The results show that: (1) Farmers' participation in agricultural insurance significantly affects their planting structure, especially lowering the level of specialization in production; insured households are about 3–6% lower than the non-insured, and there is a complementary effect between insurance participation and diversified planting. (2) For different types of farmers, participating in insurance has different effects on their agricultural production structure. Farmers purchasing insurance with low or medium levels in proportion to agricultural income significantly reduce the degree of production specialization. The effect of participation in insurance on large-scale farmers' adjustment of planting structure is more obvious. For pure grain farmers, participation in insurance will reduce planting specialization by about 3–4%. (3) Participation in agricultural insurance will encourage farmers to plant grain crops, but the effect is small. Therefore, we need to expand the coverage areas, increase insurance types, and improve coverage levels; the products should be more targeted and differentiated, strengthening farmers' participation in complete cost insurance and income insurance. Remote sensing, the Internet, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and other technologies have become the core elements of modern agriculture and smart farming. Agricultural production and management modes guided by data and services have become a cutting-edge carrier of agricultural information monitoring, which promotes the transformation of the intelligent computing of remote sensing big data and agricultural intensive management from theory to practical applications. In this paper, the main research objective is to construct a new high-frequency agricultural production monitoring and intensive sharing service and management mode, based on the three dimensions of space, time, and attributes, that includes crop recognition, growth monitoring, yield estimation, crop disease or pest monitoring, variable-rate prescription, agricultural machinery operation, and other automatic agricultural intelligent computing applications. The platforms supported by this mode include a data management and agricultural information production subsystem, an agricultural monitoring and macro-management subsystem (province and county scales), and two mobile terminal applications (APPs). Taking Shandong as the study area of the application case, the technical framework of the system and its mobile terminals were systematically elaborated at the province and county levels, which represented macro-management and precise control of agricultural production, respectively. The automatic intelligent computing mode of satellite–air–ground spatiotemporal collaboration that we proposed fully couples data obtained from satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and IoT technologies, which can provide the accurate and timely monitoring of agricultural conditions and real-time guidance for agricultural machinery scheduling throughout the entire process of agricultural cultivation, planting, management, and harvest; the area accuracy of all obtained agricultural information products is above 90%. With the rapid development of China's economy, China has become the world's largest carbon emitter. China not only has an obvious growth rate of industrial carbon emissions but also the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions is hovering at a high level. The development of China's agricultural economy has largely come at the expense of high emissions. Currently, under the background of global warming and difficulty in controlling greenhouse gas emissions, the development of low-carbon agriculture is an important way to realize the harmonious development of the ecological environment and economic growth and to promote the sustainable development of agriculture. The agricultural production efficiency is the main factor affecting the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions. Based on provincial panel data of China from 2010 to 2019, this paper establishes an indicator system and uses the super-efficiency SBM model to measure agricultural production efficiency. The regional agricultural carbon emissions were estimated using carbon-emission-related agricultural production activities. In order to study the nonlinear relationship between agricultural production efficiency and agricultural carbon emission intensity in the narrow sense, this paper uses a threshold regression model with agricultural carbon emissions as the threshold variable. Based on the analysis of China's agricultural production efficiency and agricultural carbon emissions from 2010 to 2019, an empirical test is conducted through a threshold regression model. The results show an "inverted U-shaped" relationship between agricultural production efficiency and agricultural carbon emission intensity. In areas with high agricultural production efficiency, the improvement of production efficiency can suppress the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions; in areas with low agricultural production efficiency, the improvement of production efficiency increases the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions. Finally, based on the research conclusions, this paper provides feasible suggestions and countermeasures for China's agricultural carbon emission reduction and improvement of agricultural production efficiency. The development of smart farming comes with a lot of data problems. Studies have shown this is due to insufficient cognition of the structural relationship between data and events. Shili Theory is an attractive concept. To embed intelligent agricultural technology in events and the natural environment, especially to unify and standardize agricultural production data, firstly, this paper has defined the concept of Shili Theory which researches the natural regularity of the event by Shili Mirrored Structure. Secondly, this paper has proposed a Shili Mirrored Structure based on the technology development path (from the human brain memory mechanism to the information storage mechanism to intelligent technology). Finally, the structure has been applied to develop an intelligent system of agricultural production data management. In rice production of Jilin Province, it forms the event chain of the whole plant 5T (seed, seeding, paddy shoot, grain, product period operation) and grain period 5T (harvesting, field stacking, drying, warehousing, storing). The system application shows that this management structure can reduce data flow, improve data utilization, and enhance the correlation between data and events. The detection of tomatoes is of vital importance for enhancing production efficiency, with image recognition-based tomato detection methods being the primary approach. However, these methods face challenges such as the difficulty in extracting small targets, low detection accuracy, and slow processing speeds. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved RT-DETR-Tomato model for efficient tomato detection under complex environmental conditions. The model mainly consists of a Swin Transformer block, a BiFormer module, path merging, multi-scale convolutional layers, and fully connected layers. In this proposed model, Swin Transformer is chosen as the new backbone network to replace ResNet50 because of its superior ability to capture broader global dependency relationships and contextual information. Meanwhile, a lightweight BiFormer block is adopted in Swin Transformer to reduce computational complexity through content-aware flexible computation allocation. Experimental results show that the average accuracy of the final RT-DETR-Tomato model is greatly improved compared to the original model, and the model training time is greatly reduced, demonstrating better environmental adaptability. In the future, the RT-DETR-Tomato model can be integrated with intelligent patrol and picking robots, enabling precise identification of crops and ensuring the safety of crops and the smooth progress of agricultural production. Agricultural scale management is an important means of improving agricultural production efficiency. To answer the controversy over whether different agricultural scale management models can improve production efficiency, this paper obtained 117,627 samples from 68 domestic and foreign literature and used meta-analysis to study the effects of land-scale operation (LSO) and service-scale operation (SSO) on agricultural production efficiency (APE). The moderators that affect the relationship between LSO, SSO, and APE are also examined. The research results show that (1) both LSO and SSO positively impact production efficiency, but LSO has a stronger impact. (2) The relationship between LSO and APE is positively regulated by the agricultural production and operation environment, characteristics of the agricultural location, degree of farmers' participation, and types of APE, and negatively regulated by the research situation. (3) The relationship between SSO and APE is negatively regulated by APE types and data types. Therefore, the government should promote agricultural dual-scale operation according to the local conditions through the complementary advantages of LSO and SSO, so as to fully release the promotion potential of APE. Advancing the construction and application of new quality productive forces is an essential prerequisite for achieving high-quality agricultural development and expediting the establishment of agricultural powerhouses. This study aims to elucidate the internal mechanisms through which new quality productivity contributes to high-quality agricultural development and to explore practical pathways for enhancing agricultural quality through its promotion. Utilizing panel data spanning 2012 to 2021 from 30 provinces and municipalities in mainland China, the entropy method is employed to gauge levels of new quality productivity and high-quality agricultural development. Additionally, employing research methodologies including SYS-GMM and threshold effect models, this study empirically investigates how the advancement of new quality productivity influences high-quality agricultural development. Our research reveals the following key findings: (1) The development of new quality productive forces significantly enhances high-quality agricultural development, exhibiting a heterogeneous distribution pattern favoring the "eastern region > western region > central region" and "northern region > southern region". (2) New quality productive forces can bolster the level of high-quality agricultural development by fostering innovation, coordination, openness, and shared development within its subsystems. However, they may impede progress by inhibiting improvements in green development within the subsystems. (3) The results of the threshold effect test demonstrate that the promotion effect of the development of new quality productive forces on high-quality agricultural development escalates with the level of high-quality agricultural development. Specifically, as the level of high-quality agricultural development exceeds the first threshold value of 0.1502, the promotion effect becomes significant; crossing the second threshold value of 0.2010 further amplifies this effect. In an era of connectivity, the Internet of Things introduces smart solutions for smart and sustainable agriculture, bringing alternatives to overcome the food crisis. Among these solutions, smart greenhouses support crop and vegetable agriculture regardless of season and cultivated area by carefully controlling and managing parameters like temperature, air and soil humidity, and light. Smart technologies have proven to be successful tools for increasing agricultural production at both the macro and micro levels, which is an important step in streamlining small-scale agriculture. This paper presents an experimental Internet of Things-based small-scale greenhouse prototype as a proof of concept for the benefits of merging smart sensing, connectivity, IoT, and mobile-based applications, for growing cultures. Our proposed solution is cost-friendly and includes a photovoltaic panel and a buffer battery for reducing energy consumption costs, while also assuring functionality during night and cloudy weather and a mobile application for easy data visualization and monitoring of the greenhouse. The Haors in Bangladesh are saucer-shaped, low-lying land depressions that form deep basins; they remain submerged for approximately half of the year, typically from June onwards. This fragile ecosystem spans over 2.0 million hectares in the northeastern region of the country, accounting for roughly 14% of the total areas, where approximately 19.4 million people reside. Factors including floods, flash floods, and low winter temperatures constrain agricultural productivity in the haor areas. It is a great challenge to change the haor areas from less productive to more productive land. This is a comprehensive analysis of the biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics of haors which also highlights the constraints and opportunities in agricultural production. It explores strategies for significantly increasing crop, livestock, and fish production within the haor ecosystem, in alignment with government policies. Some of the proposed agricultural development strategies for the haor areas include the development of short-duration, cold-tolerant crop varieties, such as Boro rice, utilizing relatively flood-free elevated lands and homesteads for vegetable production and promoting agricultural mechanization, livestock rearing, fisheries, and agribusiness development. The recommendations presented in this paper focus on enhancing crop yields, increasing cropping intensity, and boosting livestock and fish production; ultimately, they contribute to food security, poverty reduction, and improved livelihoods for the inhabitants of the haor areas. Over the years, agricultural management practices are being improved as they integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Precision Agriculture tools. Regarding sugarcane crop production, this integration aims to reduce production cost, enhance input applications, and allow communication among different hardware and datasets, improving system sustainability. Sugarcane mechanization has some particularities that mandate the development of custom solutions based on digital tools, which are being applied globally in different crops. Digital mechanization can be conceived as the application of digital tools on mechanical operation. This review paper addresses different digital solutions that have contributed towards the mechanization of sugarcane crop production. The process of digitalization and transformation in agriculture and its related operations to sugarcane are presented, highlighting important ICT applications such as real-time mechanical operations monitoring and integration among operations, demonstrating their contributions and limitations regarding management efficiency. In addition, this article presents the major challenges to overcome and possible guidance on research to address these issues, i.e., poor communication technologies available, need for more focus on field and crop data, and lack of data interoperability among mechanized systems. Effective spraying is essential for modern agricultural production, to ensure a high-quality and abundant harvest. Simultaneously, it is crucial to minimise the negative impact of crop protection products on the environment. To achieve this, it is necessary to implement the appropriate technical and technological parameters for the treatment and to consider the conditions under which the treatment is carried out. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the speed of the sprayer, the pressure of the liquid, and the type of nozzles, as well as air temperature and wind speed, in terms of the degree of coverage of the sprayed surfaces. The degree of coverage was analysed by spraying water-sensitive papers placed on the artificial plant, positioned to obtain horizontal and vertical surfaces. The study found that standard single flat fan nozzles provided greater coverage on upper horizontal surfaces, while standard nozzles were more effective for vertical transverse approach surfaces at lower fluid pressures and travel speeds. Neural networks were used to develop models of the relationships studied. Models with high accuracy for the validation data set were obtained in the case of the coverage of the vertical transverse leaving surface and the upper level surface (R = 0.93 and R = 0.86). These models were used to determine the optimum values of the technical parameters of the spraying process under the selected weather conditions. The maximum spray coverage (41.49%) was predicted for the XR nozzle under the following conditions: pressure = 200 kPa, driving speed = 1.4 m·s−1, temperature = 21.73 °C and wind speed = 0.32 m·s−1. Based on the sensitivity analysis of the neural models it was found that the greatest effect on the coverage of the vertical transverse leaving surface was observed for temperature and the coverage of the upper level surface was mostly influenced by driving speed. In the midst of China's ongoing rural–urban integration and development, a pivotal transformation involving the realignment of labour dynamics and land utilisation is underway. This paradigm shift has substantial implications for rural land use and agricultural productivity. Drawing from the field survey conducted in Zhejiang Province in 2019, this study puts non-agricultural employment, land transfer, and land efficiency into one econometric model and establishes a comprehensive framework to explain the mechanisms. Unlike existing research, this paper delves into the impact of different land-transfer behaviours, namely inflow and outflow, on land efficiency. The findings indicate that non-agricultural employment has no significant impact on land efficiency. Rural households acquiring land significantly enhance land efficiency, whereas relinquishing land shows no significance, thus addressing the gap in existing literature regarding the study of different transfer behaviours. Furthermore, to explore the underlying mechanisms, we investigate the mediating effect of land inflows on land efficiency, finding that it operates through plot size. In light of this, we propose that, in guiding land inflows, more emphasis should be placed on the integration and reorganisation of fragmented land rather than simply expanding the total land area, aiming to create large, well-managed areas of arable land by achieving concentrated and contiguous transferable land parcels. Large-scale management is the key to realizing long-term agricultural growth in smallholder countries. Land-scale management and service-scale management are two forms of agricultural large-scale management. The former is committed to changing the small-scale management pattern, but the latter tends to maintain it. There has been a lack of discussion and controversy about the relationship between the two. From the perspective of market maturity, this paper explores whether the two are complementary or mutually exclusive and how their complementary or mutually exclusive relationship affects agricultural green productivity. The results show the following: Land-scale management and service-scale management are complementary, not superficially contradictory. The benign interaction between the two has a consistent improvement effect on green productivity in both the short and long term, which has spatial spillovers appearing in the long term. The reasons are as follows: The farmland rental market can reverse the inhibitory effect of the current low-maturity outsourcing services market on green productivity. The outsourcing services market can delay the arrival of the inflection point beyond which expansion of farmland rental transactions reduces green productivity, and amplify the positive effect of farmland rental on it. Although the degree of benign interaction between the two forms of large-scale management has gradually increased in recent years, it is still low overall. Agricultural large-scale management in China is still in the stage driven by land-scale management. Smallholder countries such as China need not worry prematurely about which large-scale management path to take, and they should treat both forms of large-scale management with an equal perspective to accelerate the high-level interaction between them.
