Existing methods for measuring the spatial information of area maps fail to take into account the diversity of adjacency relations and the heterogeneity of adjacency distances among area objects, resulting in insufficient measurement information. This article proposes a method for measuring area map information that considers the diversity of the node–edge and Gestalt principles. Firstly, this method utilizes the adjacency relations between the Voronoi diagram of area objects to construct an adjacency graph that characterizes the spatial distribution of area objects in area maps. This adjacency graph serves as the information representation of area maps. Secondly, the method selects four characteristic indicators, namely geometric information, node degree, adjacency distance, and adjacency strength, to represent the diversity of nodes and edges in the graph that affect spatial information. Finally, nodes in the adjacency graph are taken as the basic units, and the spatial information of area maps is comprehensively calculated by integrating the four characteristics that represent spatial information. To verify the validity and rationality of the proposed method, a dataset of continuously simplified area maps and a dataset of artificially simulated degrees of randomness were designed to evaluate the performance of the existing method and the method proposed in this paper. The results indicate that the correlation between the measurement results obtained by the method proposed in this paper and the degree of disorder is as high as 0.94, outperforming the existing representative methods. Additionally, the correlation between the measurement results of this method and the degree of simplification reaches 1, indicating that the variation range of the measured values is more consistent with the cognitive assumptions based on artificial simulations compared to the existing methods. It is very important to accurately identify the critical nodes of the power grid for its safe and stable operation. In this paper, a method for identifying the critical nodes of the power grid based on the improved entropy weight method (IEWM) is proposed, and the IEWM corrects issues with the information overlap between evaluation indices and inconsistency between the entropy weight (EW) and entropy value (EV). First, considering the power grid topology and operating conditions, structural factor evaluation indices and state factor evaluation indices are established. On this basis, the IEWM is used to assign weights to nodes with different voltage levels, which strengthens the consideration of node voltage levels in the identification method of critical nodes and makes the results more accurate and effective. To realize a quantitative diagnosis of faults in the planetary gearboxes of wind turbines by processing the complex frequency signals of the planetary gear boxes and avoiding the aliasing problem of the resulting frequencies, this paper proposes a diagnosis method based on improved variational mode decomposition (IVMD) and average multi-scale double symbolic dynamic entropy (AMDSDE). Moreover, an IVMD algorithm based on multi-scale permutation entropy is introduced to reduce noise interference and realize signal demodulation. Considering the effects of complex transfer paths and the correlation between current and adjacent state modes, AMDSDE is proposed. Each fault size is obtained based on the entropy curve, and the AMDSDE of unknown faults is calculated. To verify the accuracy of the proposed method, simulations and experimental signals are processed. This paper establishes a general framework for measuring statistical divergence. Namely, with regard to a pair of random variables that share a common range of values: quantifying the distance of the statistical distribution of one random variable from that of the other. The general framework is then applied to the topics of socioeconomic inequality and renewal processes. The general framework and its applications are shown to yield and to relate to the following: f-divergence, Hellinger divergence, Renyi divergence, and Kullback–Leibler divergence (also known as relative entropy); the Lorenz curve and socioeconomic inequality indices; the Gini index and its generalizations; the divergence of renewal processes from the Poisson process; and the divergence of anomalous relaxation from regular relaxation. Partial discharge (PD) fault diagnosis is of great importance for ensuring the safe and stable operation of power transformers. To address the issues of low accuracy in traditional PD fault diagnostic methods, this paper proposes a novel method for the power transformer PD fault diagnosis. It incorporates the approximate entropy (ApEn) of symplectic geometry mode decomposition (SGMD) into the optimized bidirectional long short-term memory (BILSTM) neural network. This method extracts dominant PD features employing SGMD and ApEn. Meanwhile, it improves the diagnostic accuracy with the optimized BILSTM by introducing the golden jackal optimization (GJO). Simulation studies evaluate the performance of FFT, EMD, VMD, and SGMD. The results show that SGMD–ApEn outperforms other methods in extracting dominant PD features. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method by comparing different traditional methods. This paper presents the continuation of experimental investigations conducted by the present authors to measure and compare the thermal and fluid dynamic performance of a residential hydronic air coil using nanofluids. The prior experiments were limited to testing only one volumetric concentration (1%) of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanofluid. They compared it with the base fluid, a 60% ethylene glycol/40% water mixture by mass (60% EG). The original tests revealed some deficiencies in the experimental setup, which was subsequently revised and improved. This paper summarizes the results of experiments from the improved test bed using three concentrations of Al2O3 nanofluids: 1, 2, and 3% volumetric concentrations prepared with an average particle size of 45 nm in a 60% EG dispersion. The test bed in these experiments simulates a small air handling system typical of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) applications in cold regions. Entering conditions for the air and liquid were selected to emulate typical commercial air handling systems operating in cold climates. Contrary to previous findings, our test results revealed that nanofluids did not perform as well as expected. Prior predictions from many analytical and numerical studies had promised significant performance gain. The performance of the 1% nanofluid was generally equal to that of the base fluid under identical inlet conditions. However, the performance of the 2% and 3% nanofluids was considerably lower than that of the base fluid. The higher concentration nanofluids exhibited heat rates up to 14.6% lower than the 60% EG and up to 44.3% lower heat transfer coefficient. The 1% Al2O3/60% EG exhibited a 100% higher pressure drop across the coil than the base fluid, considering equal heat output. This performance degradation was attributed to the inability to maintain nanofluid dispersion stability, agglomeration, and subsequent decline in the thermophysical properties. Vibration monitoring and analysis are important methods in wind turbine gearbox fault diagnosis, and determining how to extract fault characteristics from the vibration signal is of primary importance. This paper presents a fault diagnosis approach based on modified hierarchical fluctuation dispersion entropy of tan-sigmoid mapping (MHFDE_TANSIG) and northern goshawk optimization–support vector machine (NGO–SVM) for wind turbine gearboxes. The tan-sigmoid (TANSIG) mapping function replaces the normal cumulative distribution function (NCDF) of the hierarchical fluctuation dispersion entropy (HFDE) method. Additionally, the hierarchical decomposition of the HFDE method is improved, resulting in the proposed MHFDE_TANSIG method. The vibration signals of wind turbine gearboxes are analyzed using the MHFDE_TANSIG method to extract fault features. The constructed fault feature set is used to intelligently recognize and classify the fault type of the gearboxes with the NGO–SVM classifier. The fault diagnosis methods based on MHFDE_TANSIG and NGO–SVM are applied to the experimental data analysis of gearboxes with different operating conditions. Managed pressure drilling (MPD) is the most effective means to ensure drilling safety, and MPD is able to avoid further deterioration of complex working conditions through precise control of the wellhead back pressure. The key to the success of MPD is the well control strategy, which currently relies heavily on manual experience, hindering the automation and intelligence process of well control. In response to this issue, an MPD knowledge graph is constructed in this paper that extracts knowledge from published papers and drilling reports to guide well control. In order to improve the performance of entity extraction in the knowledge graph, a few-shot Chinese entity recognition model CEntLM-KL is extended from the EntLM model, in which the KL entropy is built to improve the accuracy of entity recognition. Through experiments on benchmark datasets, it has been shown that the proposed model has a significant improvement compared to the state-of-the-art methods. This paper presents a novel method for finding features in the analysis of variable distributions stemming from time series. We apply the methodology to the case of submitted and accepted papers in peer-reviewed journals. We provide a comparative study of editorial decisions for papers submitted to two peer-reviewed journals: the Journal of the Serbian Chemical Society (JSCS) and this MDPI Entropy journal. We cover three recent years for which the fate of submitted papers—about 600 papers to JSCS and 2500 to Entropy—is completely determined. Instead of comparing the number distributions of these papers as a function of time with respect to a uniform distribution, we analyze the relevant probabilities, from which we derive the information entropy. It is argued that such probabilities are indeed more relevant for authors than the actual number of submissions. We tie this entropy analysis to the so called diversity of the variable distributions. Furthermore, we emphasize the correspondence between the entropy and the diversity with inequality measures, like the Herfindahl-Hirschman index and the Theil index, itself being in the class of entropy measures; the Gini coefficient which also measures the diversity in ranking is calculated for further discussion. In this sample, the seasonal aspects of the peer review process are outlined. It is found that the use of such indices, non linear transformations of the data distributions, allow us to distinguish features and evolutions of the peer review process as a function of time as well as comparing the non-uniformity of distributions. Furthermore, t- and z-statistical tests are applied in order to measure the significance (p-level) of the findings, that is, whether papers are more likely to be accepted if they are submitted during a few specific months or during a particular "season"; the predictability strength depends on the journal. Underwriters play a pivotal role in the IPO process. Information entropy, a tool for measuring the uncertainty and complexity of information, has been widely applied to various issues in complex networks. Information entropy can quantify the uncertainty and complexity of nodes in the network, providing a unique analytical perspective and methodological support for this study. This paper employs a bipartite network analysis method to construct the relationship network between underwriters and accounting firms, using the centrality of underwriters in the network as a measure of their influence to explore the impact of underwriters' influence on the distribution of interests and audit outcomes. The findings indicate that a more pronounced influence of underwriters significantly increases the ratio of underwriting fees to audit fees. Higher influence often accompanies an increase in abnormal underwriting fees. Further research reveals that companies underwritten by more influential underwriters experience a decline in audit quality. Finally, the study reveals that a well-structured audit committee governance and the rationalization of market sentiments can mitigate the negative impacts of underwriters' influence. The innovation of this paper is that it enriches the content related to underwriters by constructing the relationship network between underwriters and accounting firms for the first time using a bipartite network through the lens of information entropy. This conclusion provides new directions for thinking about the motives and possibilities behind financial institutions' cooperation, offering insights for market regulation and policy formulation. New insights into intractable industrial challenges can be revealed by framing them in terms of natural science. One intractable industrial challenge is that creative production can be much more financially expensive and time consuming than standardized production. Creative products include a wide range of goods that have one or more original characteristics. The scaling up of creative production is hindered by high financial production costs and long production durations. In this paper, creative production is framed in terms of interactions between entropy and complexity during progressions from emergent pragmatics to action semantics. An analysis of interactions between entropy and complexity is provided that relates established practice in creative production to organizational survival in changing environments. The analysis in this paper is related to assembly theory, which is a recent theoretical development in natural science that addresses how open-ended generation of complex physical objects can emerge from selection in biology. Parallels between assembly practice in industrial production and assembly theory in natural science are explained through constructs that are common to both, such as assembly index. Overall, analyses reported in the paper reveal that interactions between entropy and complexity underlie intractable challenges in creative production, from the production of individual products to the survival of companies. Pump station engineering is a water conservancy project used for long-distance water transfer, irrigation and drainage, and urban living and industrial water supply. Centrifugal pumps are one of the main pump types commonly used in pumping stations, and their operation is of considerable importance for the safety, stability, and efficient operation of pumping stations. This paper takes a large pumping station with seven centrifugal pump units as the research object and combines experimental research and numerical simulation. The axial flow velocity uniformity, average cross-sectional deviation angle, and hydraulic loss of the pump inlet section are evaluated, and the internal flow characteristics of the pump under different startup combination conditions are analyzed based on entropy generation and vorticity. This study also explores the operational performance of the pump station under different startup combination conditions, revealing the mutual influence mechanism between different startup combinations of pump stations and the internal and external characteristics of centrifugal pumps and introducing the optimal startup combination scheme for the pump station system. Research results indicate that the difference in energy loss of centrifugal pumps under different startup combinations is mainly manifested in the impeller and guide vane flow channels. For the two existing inlet flow channel structures in the pump station, the unit effectively operates when the inlet flow channel is tilted to the left. This paper explores two sample-based methods for analysing multistable systems: basin stability and basin entropy. Both methods rely on many numerical integration trials conducted with diverse initial conditions. The collected data is categorised and used to compute metrics that characterise solution stability, phase space structure, and system dynamics predictability. Basin stability assesses the overall likelihood of reaching specific solutions, while the basin entropy measure aims to capture the structure of attraction basins and the complexity of their boundaries. Although these two metrics complement each other effectively, their original procedures for computation differ significantly. This paper introduces a universal approach and algorithm for calculating basin stability and entropy measures. This study introduces a novel nonlinear dynamic analysis method, known as beluga whale optimization–slope entropy (BWO-SlEn), to address the challenge of recognizing sea state signals (SSSs) in complex marine environments. A method of underwater acoustic signal recognition based on BWO-SlEn and one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) is proposed. Firstly, particle swarm optimization–slope entropy (PSO-SlEn), BWO-SlEn, and Harris hawk optimization–slope entropy (HHO-SlEn) were used for feature extraction of noise signal and SSS. After 1D-CNN classification, BWO-SlEn were found to have the best recognition effect. Secondly, fuzzy entropy (FE), sample entropy (SE), permutation entropy (PE), and dispersion entropy (DE) were used to extract the signal features. After 1D-CNN classification, BWO-SlEn and 1D-CNN were found to have the highest recognition rate compared with them. Finally, compared with the other six recognition methods, the recognition rates of BWO-SlEn and 1D-CNN for the noise signal and SSS are at least 6% and 4.75% higher, respectively. Ludwig Boltzmann's move in his seminal paper of 1877, introducing a statistical understanding of entropy, was a watershed moment in the history of physics. The work not only introduced quantization and provided a new understanding of entropy, it challenged the understanding of what a law of nature could be. Traditionally, nomological necessity, that is, specifying the way in which a system must develop, was considered an essential element of proposed physical laws. Yet, here was a new understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics that no longer possessed this property. While it was a new direction in physics, in other important scientific discourses of that time—specifically Huttonian geology and Darwinian evolution, similar approaches were taken in which a system's development followed principles, but did so in a way that both provided a direction of time and allowed for non-deterministic, though rule-based, time evolution. Boltzmann referred to both of these theories, especially the work of Darwin, frequently. Aiming at the difficult problem of extracting fault characteristics and the low accuracy of fault diagnosis throughout the full life cycle of rolling bearings, a fault diagnosis method for rolling bearings based on grey relation degree is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the subtraction-average-based optimizer is used to optimize the parameters of the variational mode decomposition algorithm. Secondly, the vibration signals of bearings are decomposed by using the optimized results, and the feature vector of the intrinsic mode function component corresponding to the minimum envelope entropy is extracted. Finally, the grey proximity and similarity relation degree based on standard distance entropy are weighted to calculate the grey comprehensive relation degree between the feature vector of vibration signals and each standard state. By comparing the results, the diagnosis of different fault states and degrees of rolling bearings is realized. The XJTU-SY dataset was used for experimentation, and the results show that the proposed method achieves a diagnostic accuracy of 95.24% and has better diagnosis performance compared to various algorithms. Three-phase asynchronous motors have a wide range of applications in the machinery industry and fault diagnosis aids in the healthy operation of a motor. In order to improve the accuracy and generalization of fault diagnosis in three-phase asynchronous motors, this paper proposes a three-phase asynchronous motor fault diagnosis method based on the combination of multiscale Weibull dispersive entropy (WB-MDE) and particle swarm optimization–support vector machine (PSO-SVM). Firstly, the Weibull distribution (WB) is used to linearize and smooth the vibration signals to obtain sharper information about the motor state. Secondly, the quantitative features of the regularity and orderliness of a given sequence are extracted using multiscale dispersion entropy (MDE). Then, a support vector machine (SVM) is used to construct a classifier, the parameters are optimized via the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and the extracted feature vectors are fed into the optimized SVM model for classification and recognition. Finally, the accuracy and generalization of the model proposed in this paper are tested by adding raw data with Gaussian white noise with different signal-to-noise ratios and the CHIST-ERA SOON public dataset. This paper builds a three-phase asynchronous motor vibration signal experimental platform, through a piezoelectric acceleration sensor to discern the four states of the motor data, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The accuracy of the collected data using the WB-MDE method proposed in this paper for feature extraction and the extracted features using the optimization of the PSO-SVM method for fault classification and identification is 100%. Additionally, the proposed model is tested for noise resistance and generalization. A hypothesis is presented to explain how the ageing process might be influenced by optimizing mitochondrial efficiency to reduce intracellular entropy. Research-based quantifications of entropy are scarce. Non-equilibrium metabolic reactions and compartmentalization were found to contribute most to lowering entropy in the cells. Like the cells, mitochondria are thermodynamically open systems exchanging matter and energy with their surroundings-the rest of the cell. Based on the calculations from cancer cells, glycolysis was reported to produce less entropy than mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. However, these estimations depended on the CO 2 concentration so that at slightly increased CO 2 , it was oxidative phosphorylation that produced less entropy. Also, the thermodynamic efficiency of mitochondrial respiratory complexes varies depending on the respiratory state and oxidant/antioxidant balance. Therefore, in spite of long-standing theoretical and practical efforts, more measurements, also in isolated mitochondria, with intact and suboptimal respiration, are needed to resolve the issue. Entropy increases in ageing while mitochondrial efficiency of energy conversion, quality control, and turnover mechanisms deteriorate. Optimally functioning mitochondria are necessary to meet energy demands for cellular defence and repair processes to attenuate ageing. The intuitive approach of simply supplying more metabolic fuels (more nutrients) often has the opposite effect, namely a decrease in energy production in the case of nutrient overload. Excessive nutrient intake and obesity accelerate ageing, while calorie restriction without malnutrition can prolong life. Balanced nutrient intake adapted to needs/activity-based high ATP requirement increases mitochondrial respiratory efficiency and leads to multiple alterations in gene expression and metabolic adaptations. Therefore, rather than overfeeding, it is necessary to fine-tune energy production by optimizing mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress; the evidence is discussed in this paper.

Existing works have paid scant attention to the multivariate entropy of complex data. Thus, existing methods perform poorly in fully exposing the nature of complex data. To mine a rich vein of data features, this paper applies a shuffle and surrogate approach to complex data to decouple probability density information from correlation information and then obtain shuffle data and surrogate data. Furthermore, this paper applies approximate entropy (ApEn) to individually estimate complexities and irregularities of the original, the shuffle, and the surrogate data. As a result, this paper develops a ternary ApEn approach by integrating the ApEn of the original, shuffle, and surrogate data into a three-dimensional vector for describing the dynamics of complex data. Next, the proposed ternary ApEn approach is compared with conventional temporal statistics, conventional ApEn, two-dimensional energy entropy based on empirical mode decomposition or wavelet decomposition, and binary ApEn using both gear vibration data and roller-bearing vibration data containing different types and severity of faults. Many popular entropy definitions for signals, including approximate and sample entropy, are based on the idea of embedding the time series into an m-dimensional space, aiming to detect complex, deeper and more informative relationships among samples. However, for both approximate and sample entropy, the high computational cost is a severe limitation. Especially when large amounts of data are processed, or when parameter tuning is employed premising a large number of executions, the necessity of fast computation algorithms becomes urgent. In the past, our research team proposed fast algorithms for sample, approximate and bubble entropy. In the general case, the bucket-assisted algorithm was the one presenting the lowest execution times. In this paper, we exploit the opportunities given by the multithreading technology to further reduce the computation time. Without special requirements in hardware, since today even our cost-effective home computers support multithreading, the computation of entropy definitions can be significantly accelerated. The aim of this paper is threefold: (a) to extend the bucket-assisted algorithm for multithreaded processors, (b) to present updated execution times for the bucket-assisted algorithm since the achievements in hardware and compiler technology affect both execution times and gain, and (c) to provide a Python library which wraps fast C implementations capable of running in parallel on multithreaded processors. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods have gained increased attention in sustainable engineering, where complex decision-making problems require consideration of multiple criteria and stakeholder perspectives. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the different MCDM methods, their applications in sustainable engineering, and their strengths and weaknesses. The paper discusses the concept of sustainable engineering, its principles, and the different areas where MCDM methods have been applied, including energy, manufacturing, transportation, and environmental engineering. Case studies of real-world applications are presented and analyzed, highlighting the main findings and implications for engineering practice. Finally, the challenges and limitations of MCDM methods in sustainable engineering are discussed, and future research directions are proposed. Underwater acoustic technology as an important means of exploring the oceans is receiving more attention. Denoising for underwater acoustic information in complex marine environments has become a hot research topic. In order to realize the hydrophone signal denoising, this paper proposes a joint denoising method based on improved symplectic geometry modal decomposition (ISGMD) and wavelet threshold (WT). Firstly, the energy contribution (EC) is introduced into the SGMD as an iterative termination condition, which efficiently improves the denoising capability of SGMD and generates a reasonable number of symplectic geometry components (SGCs). Then spectral clustering (SC) is used to accurately aggregate SGCs into information clusters mixed-clusters, and noise clusters. Spectrum entropy (SE) is used to distinguish clusters quickly. Finally, the mixed clusters achieve the signal denoising by wavelet threshold. The useful information is reconstructed to achieve the original signal denoising. In the simulation experiment, the denoising effect of different denoising algorithms in the time domain and frequency domain is compared, and SNR and RMSE are used as evaluation indexes. The paper analyzes the probability distribution of the occupancy numbers and the entropy of a system at the equilibrium composed by an arbitrary number of non-interacting bosons. The probability distribution is obtained through two approaches: one involves tracing out the environment from a bosonic eigenstate of the combined environment and system of interest (the empirical approach), while the other involves tracing out the environment from the mixed state of the combined environment and system of interest (the Bayesian approach). In the thermodynamic limit, the two coincide and are equal to the multinomial distribution. Furthermore, the paper proposes to identify the physical entropy of the bosonic system with the Shannon entropy of the occupancy numbers, fixing certain contradictions that arise in the classical analysis of thermodynamic entropy. Finally, by leveraging an information-theoretic inequality between the entropy of the multinomial distribution and the entropy of the multivariate hypergeometric distribution, Bayesianism of information theory and empiricism of statistical mechanics are integrated into a common "infomechanical" framework. High entropy amorphous alloys (HEAAs) are materials that have received much attention in recent years. They exhibit many unique properties; however, research on their composition design method has not been deep enough. In this paper, we summarized some effective composition design strategies for HEAAs. By adjusting the atomic ratio from quinary bulk metallic glasses, Ti20Zr20Cu20Ni20Be20 HEAA with a high fracture strength of 2315 MPa was designed. By similar element addition/substitution, a series of Ti–(Zr, Hf, Nb)–Cu–Ni–Be HEAAs was developed. They possess good glass-forming ability with a maximum critical diameter of 30 mm. Combining elements from those ternary/quaternary bulk metallic glasses has also proved to be an effective method for designing new HEAAs. The effect of high entropy on the property of the alloy, possible composition design methods, and potential applications were also discussed. Evaluating the importance of nodes in coal transportation networks and identifying influential nodes is a crucial study in the field of network science, vital for ensuring the stable operation of such complex networks. However, most existing studies focus on the performance analysis of single-medium networks, lacking research on combined transportation, which is not applicable to China's coal transportation model. To address this issue, this paper first establishes a static topological structure of China's coal-iron-water combined transportation network based on complex network theory, constructing a node importance evaluation index system through four centrality indicators. Subsequently, an enhanced TOPSIS method (GRE-TOPSIS) is proposed based on the Grey Relational Entropy Weight (GRE) to identify key nodes in the complex network from local and positional information dimensions. Compared to previous studies, this research emphasizes composite networks, breaking through the limitations of single-medium network research, and combines gray relational analysis with entropy weighting, enhancing the objectivity of the TOPSIS method. In the simulation section of this paper, we establish the model of China's coal-iron-water combined transportation network and use the algorithm to comprehensively rank and identify key nodes in 84 nodes, verifying its performance. Network efficiency and three other parameters are used as measures of network performance. Through simulated deliberate and random attacks on the network, the changing trends in network performance are analyzed. The results show that in random attacks, the performance drops to around 50% after damaging nearly 40 ordinary nodes. In contrast, targeting close to 16 key nodes in deliberate attacks achieves a similar effect. Once key nodes are well protected, the network exhibits a certain resistance to damage. This paper provides a systematic review of the transfer and quantification of the concept of entropy in multidisciplinary fields and delves into its future applications and research directions in organizational management psychology based on its core characteristics. We first comprehensively reviewed the conceptual evolution of entropy in disciplines such as physics, information theory, and psychology, revealing its complexity and diversity as an interdisciplinary concept. Subsequently, we analyzed the quantification methods of entropy in a multidisciplinary context and pointed out that their calculation methods have both specificity and commonality across different disciplines. Subsequently, the paper reviewed the research on how individuals cope with uncertainty in entropy increase, redefined psychological entropy from the perspective of organizational management psychology, and proposed an "entropy-based proactive control model" at the individual level. This model is built around the core connotation of entropy, covering four dimensions: learning orientation, goal orientation, change orientation, and risk taking. We believe that psychological entropy, as a meta structure of individuals, can simulate, explain, and predict the process of how individuals manage and control "entropy" in an organizational environment from a dynamic perspective. This understanding enables psychological entropy to integrate a series of positive psychological constructs (e.g., lean spirit), providing extensive predictive and explanatory power for various behaviors of individuals in organizations. Slope Entropy (SlpEn) is a novel method recently proposed in the field of time series entropy estimation. In addition to the well-known embedded dimension parameter, m, used in other methods, it applies two additional thresholds, denoted as δ and γ , to derive a symbolic representation of a data subsequence. The original paper introducing SlpEn provided some guidelines for recommended specific values of these two parameters, which have been successfully followed in subsequent studies. However, a deeper understanding of the role of these thresholds is necessary to explore the potential for further SlpEn optimisations. Some works have already addressed the role of δ , but in this paper, we extend this investigation to include the role of γ and explore the impact of using an asymmetric scheme to select threshold values. We conduct a comparative analysis between the standard SlpEn method as initially proposed and an optimised version obtained through a grid search to maximise signal classification performance based on SlpEn. The clearance existing between the impeller rim and the adjacent shroud within the pump configuration establishes conducive circumstances for the initiation of cavitation. The bubbles generated by cavitation will flow forward with the water, blocking the channel, and result in the degradation of the pump performance. When the cavitation is severe, vibration and noise will be generated. The impact formed by the collapse of the bubbles will seriously erode the blades and form pits on the blade surfaces. Drawing upon the outcomes derived from numerical simulations, this paper investigates the relationship between tip clearance and cavitation in an axial flow pump, with a specific focus on energy dissipation characteristics. The principal findings indicate that the dimensions of the tip clearance predominantly influence the spatial distribution of the tip leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation. The entropy production rate distribution at the tip correlates with both the cavitation level of the pump and the extent of the tip clearance. The shedding phenomenon of the TLV becomes more evident when analyzing the distribution of entropy production rates. During cavitation, an increased tip clearance is associated with a reduction in the dissipation of viscous entropy production within the impeller domain, and the entropy production resulting from turbulent dissipation significantly surpasses that arising from viscous dissipation. Combining remote sensing images with deep learning algorithms plays an important role in wide applications. However, it is difficult to have large-scale labeled datasets for remote sensing images because of acquisition conditions and costs. How to use the limited acquisition budget to obtaina better remote sensing image dataset is a problem worth studying. In response to this problem, this paper proposes a remote sensing image quality evaluation method based on node entropy, which can be combined with active learning to provide low-cost guidance for remote sensing image collection and labeling. The method includes a node selection module and a remote sensing image quality evaluation module. The function of the node selection module is to select representative images, and the remote sensing image quality evaluation module evaluates the remote sensing image information quality by calculating the node entropy of the images. The image at the decision boundary of the existing images has a higher information quality. To validate the method proposed in this paper, experiments are performed on two public datasets. Robust geometric fitting is one of the crucial and fundamental problems in computer vision and pattern recognition. While random sampling and consensus maximization have been popular strategies for robust fitting, finding a balance between optimization quality and computational efficiency remains a persistent obstacle. In this paper, we adopt an optimization perspective and introduce a novel maximum consensus robust fitting algorithm that incorporates the maximum entropy framework into the consensus maximization problem. Specifically, we incorporate the probability distribution of inliers calculated using maximum entropy with consensus constraints. Furthermore, we introduce an improved relaxed and accelerated alternating direction method of multipliers (R-A-ADMMs) strategy tailored to our framework, facilitating an efficient solution to the optimization problem. Our proposed algorithm demonstrates superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods on both synthetic and contaminated real datasets, particularly when dealing with contaminated datasets containing a high proportion of outliers. Conventional gunshot detection systems can quickly and reliably detect gunshots in the area where the acoustic sensors are placed. This paper presents the detection of weak hunting gunshots using the short-term entropy of signal energy computed from acoustic signals in an open natural environment. Our research in this field was primarily aimed at detecting gunshots fired at close range with the usual acoustic intensity to protect wild elephants from poachers. The detection of weak gunshots can extend existing detection systems to detect more distant gunshots. The developed algorithm was optimized for the detection of gunshots in two categories of the surrounding sounds, short impulsive events and continuous noise, and tested in acoustic scenes where the power ratios between the weak gunshots and louder surroundings range from 0 dB to −14 dB. The overall accuracy was evaluated in terms of recall and precision. Depending on impulsive or noise sounds, binary detection was successful down to −8 dB or −6 dB; then, the efficiency decreases, but some very weak gunshots can still be detected at −13 dB. In this paper, we propose using a chaotic system composed of nanolasers (NLs) as a physical entropy source. Combined with post-processing technologies, this system can produce high-quality physical random number sequences. We investigated the parameter range for achieving time-delay signature (TDS) concealment in the chaotic system. This study demonstrates that NLs exhibit noticeable TDS only under optical feedback. As mutual injection strength between the master NLs (MNLs) increases, the TDS of the MNLs is gradually suppressed until they are completely concealed. Compared to MNLs, the slave NL (SNL) exhibits better TDS suppression performance. Additionally, we investigated the chaotic and highly unpredictable regions of the SNL, demonstrating that high-quality chaotic signals can be produced over a wide range of parameters. Using TDS hidden and highly unpredictable chaotic signals as the source of random entropy, the effects of different post-processing techniques on random number extraction were compared. The results indicate that effective post-processing can enhance the unpredictability of the random sequence. The high service expectations of e-commerce customers are placing unprecedented demands on e-commerce warehouse workers, leading to higher fatigue and health-related disorders among these workers. Order picking in retail e-commerce fulfilment warehouses (REFWs) is highly labour-intensive and physically demanding activity. This is mainly due to the prevalence of single-unit orders and the expectation of quick order servicing. One strategy to reduce picking effort is the adoption of a scattered storage assignment policy, which spreads the inventory of each product across the entire warehouse. This paper proposes a new, hierarchical approach for the scattering of stock, along with an entropy-based measure for scattering. This measure overcomes some significant limitations of the existing scattering measures and captures the extent of scattering more effectively. We developed a storage assignment heuristic for the scattering of stock and conducted a simulation study to demonstrate its effectiveness in reducing the order-picking effort. Some valuable managerial insights were obtained using a simulation with different warehouse designs and operating parameters. Discovered as an apparent pattern, a universal relation between geometry and information called the holographic principle has yet to be explained. This relation is unfolded in the present paper. As it is demonstrated there, the origin of the holographic principle lies in the fact that a geometry of physical space has only a finite number of points. Furthermore, it is shown that the puzzlement of the holographic principle can be explained by a magnification of grid cells used to discretize geometrical magnitudes such as areas and volumes into sets of points. To wit, when grid cells of the Planck scale are projected from the surface of the observable universe into its interior, they become enlarged. For that reason, the space inside the observable universe is described by the set of points whose cardinality is equal to the number of points that constitute the universe's surface. A user's devices such as their phone and computer are constantly bombarded by IoT devices and associated applications seeking connection to the user's devices. These IoT devices may or may not seek explicit user consent, thus leaving the users completely unaware the IoT device is collecting, using, and/or sharing their personal data or, only marginal informed, if the user consented to the connecting IoT device but did not read the associated privacy policies. Privacy policies are intended to inform users of what personally identifiable information (PII) data will be collected about them and the policies about how those PII data will be used and shared. This paper presents novel tools and the underlying algorithms employed by the Personal Privacy Assistant app (UTCID PPA) developed by the University of Texas at Austin Center for Identity to inform users of IoT devices seeking to connect to their devices and to notify those users of potential privacy risks posed by the respective IoT device. The assessment of these privacy risks must deal with the uncertainty associated with sharing the user's personal data. If privacy risk (R) equals the consequences (C) of an incident (i.e., personal data exposure) multiplied by the probability (P) of those consequences occurring (C × P), then efforts to control risks must seek to reduce the possible consequences of an incident as well as reduce the uncertainty of the incident and its consequences occurring. This research classifies risk according to two parameters: expected value of the incident's consequences and uncertainty (entropy) of those consequences. This research calculates the entropy of the privacy incident consequences by evaluating: (1) the data sharing policies governing the IoT resource and (2) the type of personal data exposed. The data sharing policies of an IoT resource are scored by the UTCID PrivacyCheck™, which uses machine learning to read and score the IoT resource privacy policies against metrics set forth by best practices and international regulations. The UTCID Identity Ecosystem uses empirical identity theft and fraud cases to assess the entropy of privacy incident consequences involving a specific type of personal data, such as name, address, Social Security number, fingerprint, and user location. Specifically, we consider a system of free fermions that is in its ground state, and such that its one-body Hamiltonian is a large random matrix, which is often used to model long-range hopping. By using random matrix theory, we show that in this case, the entanglement entropy obeys the volume law known for systems with short-range hopping but described either by a mixed state or a pure strongly excited state of the Hamiltonian. We also give streamlined proof of Page's formula for the entanglement entropy of black hole radiation for a wide class of typical ground states, thereby proving the universality and the typicality of the formula. Airport networks are interconnected through flight routes, with delays at upstream airports leading to delays at downstream airports, thus causing delay propagation. Exploring the mechanisms of delay propagation in airport networks provides scientific insights for managing and controlling delays in aviation systems. Existing methods, such as Granger causality tests and transfer entropy, must be revised to address the nonlinear causal relationships of delays in airport networks. So, this paper proposes a causality mining method for delay propagation in airport networks based on partial correlation-based multivariate conditional independence (PCMCI). This method comprehensively considers all airports and causality mining in two stages. The first stage uses conditional independence tests to obtain the parent node set of the target airport, which includes both true and false causal relationships. The second stage employs instantaneous conditional independence tests to eliminate false causal relationships and obtain test statistics representing the strength of causality. Based on historical delay data from US airports over a year, the experimental results show that multiple factors cause delay propagation in airport networks rather than a single causal relationship. The scope of delay propagation is limited, mainly affecting a few airports closely connected to it. Delays at airports with small flight volumes are more likely to propagate. Few airport pairs in the network mutually propagate delays and, often, delays at airports affected by a particular airport's delay also exhibit causal relationships with each other. Timely and accurate fault diagnosis for a lithium-ion battery pack is critical to ensure its safety. However, the early fault of a battery pack is difficult to detect because of its unobvious fault effect and nonlinear time-varying characteristics. In this paper, a fault diagnosis method based on relative entropy and state of charge (SOC) estimation is proposed to detect fault in lithium-ion batteries. First, the relative entropies of the voltage, temperature and SOC of battery cells are calculated by using a sliding window, and the cumulative sum (CUSUM) test is adopted to achieve fault diagnosis and isolation. Second, the SOC estimation of the short-circuit cell is obtained, and the short-circuit resistance is estimated for a quantitative analysis of the short-circuit fault. Furthermore, the effectiveness of our method is validated by multiple fault tests in a thermally coupled electrochemical battery model. The results show that the proposed method can accurately detect different types of faults and evaluate the short-circuit fault degree by resistance estimation. The voltage/temperature sensor fault is detected at 71 s/58 s after faults have occurred, and a short-circuit fault is diagnosed at 111 s after the fault. This paper introduces a low-complexity start–stop true random number generator (TRNG) utilizing jitter in ring oscillators (ROs). Incorporating phase detectors enhances entropy extraction from the same number of ROs. The raw bits undergo online post-processing using the SHA-1 algorithm, which is widely supported by many programming languages. The output bit streams pass all NIST statistical tests (SP 800-22 and SP-90B). Bits are generated on demand, enhancing security by preventing eavesdropping during continuous bit production. Space targets move in orbit at a very high speed, so in order to obtain high-quality imaging, high-speed motion compensation (HSMC) and translational motion compensation (TMC) are required. HSMC and TMC are usually adjacent, and the residual error of HSMC will reduce the accuracy of TMC. At the same time, under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the accuracy of HSMC and TMC will also decrease, which brings challenges to high-quality ISAR imaging. Therefore, this paper proposes a joint ISAR motion compensation algorithm based on entropy minimization under low-SNR conditions. Firstly, the motion of the space target is analyzed, and the echo signal model is obtained. Then, the motion of the space target is modeled as a high-order polynomial, and a parameterized joint compensation model of high-speed motion and translational motion is established. Finally, taking the image entropy after joint motion compensation as the objective function, the red-tailed hawk–Nelder–Mead (RTH-NM) algorithm is used to estimate the target motion parameters, and the joint compensation is carried out. The pulse-coupled neural network (PCNN), due to its effectiveness in simulating the mammalian visual system to perceive and understand visual information, has been widely applied in the fields of image segmentation and image fusion. To address the issues of low contrast and the loss of detail information in infrared and visible light image fusion, this paper proposes a novel image fusion method based on an improved adaptive dual-channel PCNN model in the non-subsampled shearlet transform (NSST) domain. Firstly, NSST is used to decompose the infrared and visible light images into a series of high-pass sub-bands and a low-pass sub-band, respectively. Next, the PCNN models are stimulated using the weighted sum of the eight-neighborhood Laplacian of the high-pass sub-bands and the energy activity of the low-pass sub-band. The high-pass sub-bands are fused using local structural information as the basis for the linking strength for the PCNN, while the low-pass sub-band is fused using a linking strength based on multiscale morphological gradients. Finally, the fused high-pass and low-pass sub-bands are reconstructed to obtain the fused image. Comparative experiments demonstrate that, subjectively, this method effectively enhances the contrast of scenes and targets while preserving the detail information of the source images. Compared to the best mean values of the objective evaluation metrics of the compared methods, the proposed method shows improvements of 2.35%, 3.49%, and 11.60% in information entropy, mutual information, and standard deviation, respectively. This paper proposes a new hybrid model for classifying stress states using EEG signals, combining multi-domain transfer entropy (TrEn) with a two-dimensional PCANet (2D-PCANet) approach. The aim is to create an automated system for identifying stress levels, which is crucial for early intervention and mental health management. A major challenge in this field lies in extracting meaningful emotional information from the complex patterns observed in EEG. Our model addresses this by initially applying independent component analysis (ICA) to purify the EEG signals, enhancing the clarity for further analysis. We then leverage the adaptability of the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) to represent the EEG data in time, frequency, and time–frequency domains. This multi-domain representation allows for a more nuanced understanding of the brain's activity in response to stress. The subsequent stage involves the deployment of a two-layer 2D-PCANet network designed to autonomously distill EEG features associated with stress. These features are then classified by a support vector machine (SVM) to determine the stress state. Moreover, stress induction and data acquisition experiments are designed. We employed two distinct tasks known to trigger stress responses. Other stress-inducing elements that enhance the stress response were included in the experimental design, such as time limits and performance feedback. The EEG data collected from 15 participants were retained. This paper extends the concept of metrics based on the Bayesian information criterion (BIC), to achieve strongly consistent estimation of partition Markov models (PMMs). We introduce a set of metrics drawn from the family of model selection criteria known as efficient determination criteria (EDC). This generalization extends the range of options available in BIC for penalizing the number of model parameters. We formally specify the relationship that determines how EDC works when selecting a model based on a threshold associated with the metric. Furthermore, we improve the penalty options within EDC, identifying the penalty ln (ln (n)) as a viable choice that maintains the strongly consistent estimation of a PMM. The modern textbook analysis of the thermal state of photons inside a three-dimensional reflective cavity is based on the three quantum numbers that characterize photon's energy eigenvalues coming out when the boundary conditions are imposed. The crucial passage from the quantum numbers to the continuous frequency is operated by introducing a three-dimensional continuous version of the three discrete quantum numbers, which leads to the energy spectral density and to the entropy spectral density. This standard analysis obscures the role of the multiplicity of energy eigenvalues associated to the same eigenfrequency. In this paper we review the past derivations of Bose's entropy spectral density and present a new analysis of energy spectral density and entropy spectral density based on the multiplicity of energy eigenvalues.
