Central Chile (CC, latitudes 32–40°S) experienced very active fires in 2017 and 2023. These fires burned large areas and killed many people. These unprecedented fires for CC presented a need for more defined fire weather conditions on the synoptic scale. In this paper, fire weather conditions were analyzed using various satellite-derived fire data (hotspots, HSs), wind streamlines, distribution maps of wind flow and temperature, and various synoptic-scale weather maps. Results showed that local winds, known as Puelche, blew on the peak fire days (26 January 2017 and 3 February 2023). The number of HSs on these days was 2676 and 2746, respectively, about 90 times the average (30). The occurrence of Puelche winds was confirmed by streamlines from high-pressure systems offshore of Argentina to the study area in CC. The formation of strong winds and high-temperature areas associated with Puelche winds were identified on the Earth survey satellite maps. Strong winds of about 38 km h−1 and high temperatures above 32 °C with low relative humidity below 33% were actually observed at the weather station near the fire-prone areas. In the open literature, there are numerous studies on the normal and extreme (flood and drought) behavior of wet and dry periods based on the understanding of the standard precipitation index (SPI), which provides a series of categorizations by considering the standard normal (Gaussian) probability distribution function (PDF). The numerical meaning of each categorization assessment is quite lacking in terms of future predictions of wet and dry period duration based on historical records. This paper presents a new approach for calculating possible formations of future wet and dry period durations based on historical records through an effective fractal geometric forecasting approach. The essence of the proposed methodology is based on the number of dry periods (steps) of non-overlapping monthly duration along consecutive broken line paths in the SPI classification for wet and dry period durations. It has been observed that the plot of periods on double logarithmic paper falls along a straight line against the number of such periods, implying a power function, which is the essence of fractal geometry. Extending the empirically derived straight line provides the number of periods that may occur in the future over a range of SPI levels. This methodology is referred to as SPI fractal (SPIF), and the classic SPI classification is converted into SPIF wet and dry polygons, which provide additional information about the drought period number within a valid polygonal area, compared to the classic SPI results. The wet and dry period features of any hydro-meteorology time series are constrained in SPIF polygons. In South China, the large quantity of rainfall in the pre-summer rainy season can easily lead to natural disasters, which emphasizes the importance of improving the accuracy of precipitation forecasting during this period for the social and economic development of the region. In this paper, the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) is used to establish the model for precipitation forecasting. Three schemes are applied to improve the model performance: (1) predictors are selected based on individual meteorological stations within the region rather than the region as a whole; (2) the triangular irregular network (TIN) is proposed to preprocess the observed precipitation data for input of the BPNN model, while simulated/forecast precipitation is the expected output; and (3) a genetic algorithm is used for the hyperparameter optimization of the BPNN. The first scheme reduces the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and the root mean square error (RMSE) of the simulation by roughly 5% and more than 15 mm; the second reduces the MAPE and RMSE by more than 15% and 15 mm, respectively, while the third improves the simulation inapparently. Obviously, the second scheme raises the upper limit of the model simulation capability greatly by preprocessing the precipitation data. During the training and validation periods, the MAPE of the improved model can be controlled at approximately 35%. For precipitation hindcasting in the test period, the anomaly rate is less than 50% in only one season, and the highest is 64.5%. According to the anomaly correlation coefficient and Ps score of the hindcast precipitation, the improved model performance is slightly better than the FGOALS-f2 model. Although global climate change makes the predictors more variable, the trend of simulation is almost identical to that of the observed values over the whole period, suggesting that the model is able to capture the general characteristics of climate change. Ground meteorological observation data (GMOD) are the core of research on earth-related disciplines and an important reference for societal production and life. Unfortunately, due to operational issues or equipment failures, missing values may occur in GMOD. Hence, the imputation of missing data is a prevalent issue during the pre-processing of GMOD. Although a large number of machine-learning methods have been applied to the field of meteorological missing value imputation and have achieved good results, they are usually aimed at specific meteorological elements, and few studies discuss imputation when multiple elements are randomly missing in the dataset. This paper designed a machine-learning-based multidimensional meteorological data imputation framework (MMDIF), which can use the predictions of machine-learning methods to impute the GMOD with random missing values in multiple attributes, and tested the effectiveness of 20 machine-learning methods on imputing missing values within 124 meteorological stations across six different climatic regions based on the MMDIF. The results show that MMDIF-RF was the most effective missing value imputation method; it is better than other methods for imputing 11 types of hourly meteorological elements. Although this paper applied MMDIF to the imputation of missing values in meteorological data, the method can also provide guidance for dataset reconstruction in other industries. This paper shows the observation and estimation of convective wind gusts by different satellite sensors at the C-band (Sentinel-1 SAR) and L-band (ALOS-1 SAR and SMAP radiometer) over Lake Victoria, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Gulf of Mexico. These areas are significantly impacted by deep convection associated with strong surface winds and heavy rainfall. In particular, the collocation of Sentinel-1 and SMAP images enables the observation of the movement of surface wind gusts corresponding to that of deep convective clouds. The convective wind intensity estimated from Sentinel-1 and SMAP data varies from 10 to 25 m/s. Additionally, we present an agreement in the observation of deep convective clouds, dynamics, and strong surface winds by different satellite sensors, including Meteosat geostationary (GEO), Aeolus Lidar, and Sentinel-1 SAR, respectively. We also evaluate the estimated convective wind gusts by comparison with the in situ measurements of the weather stations installed in the Gulf of Mexico, where deep convection occurs regularly. The result shows an agreement between the two wind sources estimated and measured. Reanalysis datasets provide a reliable reanalysis of climate input data for hydrological models in regions characterized by limited weather station coverage. In this paper, the accuracy of precipitation, the maximum and minimum temperatures of four reanalysis datasets, the China Meteorological Assimilation Driving Datasets for the SWAT model (CMADS), time-expanded climate forecast system reanalysis (CFSR+), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast Reanalysis (ERA). and the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD), were evaluated by using data from 28 ground-based observations (OBs) in the Source of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers (SYYR) region and were used as input data for the SWAT model for runoff simulation and performance evaluation, respectively. And, finally, the CMADS was optimized using Integrated Calibrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (AIMERG) data. The results show that CMFD is the most representative reanalysis data for precipitation characteristics in the SYYR region among the four reanalysis datasets evaluated in this paper, followed by ERA5 and CFSR, while CMADS performs satisfactorily for temperature simulations in this region, but underestimates precipitation. And we contend that the accuracy of runoff simulations is notably contingent upon the precision of daily precipitation within the reanalysis dataset. The runoff simulations in this region do not effectively capture the extreme runoff characteristics of the Yellow River and Yangtze River sources. The refinement of CMADS through the integration of AIMERG satellite precipitation data emerges as a potent strategy for enhancing the precision of runoff simulations. This research can provide a reference for selecting meteorological data products and optimization methods for hydrological process simulation in areas with few meteorological stations. In this paper, we investigate mathematical models of meteorological forecasting based on the work of neural networks, which allow us to calculate presumptive meteorological parameters of the desired location on the basis of previous meteorological data. A new method of grouping neural networks to obtain a more accurate output result is proposed. An algorithm is presented, based on which the most accurate meteorological forecast was obtained based on the results of the study. This algorithm can be used in a wide range of situations, such as obtaining data for the operation of equipment in a given location and studying meteorological parameters of the location. To build this model, we used data obtained from personal weather stations of the Weather Underground company and the US National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD). Also, a Google remote learning machine was used to compare the results with existing products on the market. The algorithm for building the forecast model covered several locations across the US in order to compare its performance in different weather zones. The long-term atmospheric mixing layer height (MLH) information plays an important role in air quality and weather forecasting. However, it is not sufficient to study the characteristics of MLH using long-term high spatial and temporal resolution data in the desert. In this paper, over the southern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, the diurnal, monthly, and seasonal variations in the daytime MLH (retrieved by coherent Doppler wind lidar) and surface meteorological elements (provided by the local meteorological station) in a two-year period (from July 2021 to July 2023) were statistically analyzed, and the relationship between the two kinds of data was summarized. It was found that the diurnal average MLH exhibits a unimodal distribution, and the decrease rate in the MLH in the afternoon is much higher than the increase rate before noon. From the seasonal and monthly perspective, the most frequent deep mixing layer (>4 km) was formed in June, and the MLH is the highest in spring and summer. Finally, in terms of their mutual relationship, it was observed that the east-pathway wind has a greater impact on the formation of the deep mixing layer than the west-pathway wind; the dust weather with visibility of 1–10 km contributes significantly to the formation of the mixing layer; the temperature and relative humidity also exhibit a clear trend of a concentrated distribution at about the height of 3 km. The statistical analysis of the MLH deepens the understanding of the characteristics of dust pollution in this area, which is of great significance for the treatment of local dust pollution. In the western Andes, climate changes have led to drastic ecological changes during the Pleistocene and Holocene. Given the debate surrounding precipitation pattern changes and the lack of research on lakes in the Chilean Altiplano, this study aims to assess recent climate changes. The paper presents an innovative methodology based on Google Earth Engine (GEE), utilizing fluctuations in water levels in endorheic lakes as natural precipitation indicators. Three lakes (Chungará, Miscanti, and Miniques) in isolated drainage systems were studied, where changes in water levels directly reflect rainfall variations. Data from Landsat-OLI 8, Landsat-ETM+, Landsat-TM 5, and MODIS spanning 31 years were processed using the Google Earth Engine platform. The shapes of the water bodies were extracted using hue saturation value (HSV) composites. The surface areas of the lakes were compared with precipitation data from national meteorological stations and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) using linear regression analyses. Both lake area and rainfall volume showed a decrease over time, with varying trends depending on environmental conditions. However, the analysis consistently indicates a reduction in the area and volume of Chilean lakes corresponding to observed rainfall patterns over the past three decades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distributed photovoltaic (PV) power stations generally lack historical meteorological data, which is one of the main reasons for their insufficient power prediction accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes a power prediction method for regional distributed PV power stations based on meteorological encryption and spatio-temporal graph networks. First, inverse distance weighted meteorological encryption technology is used to achieve the comprehensive coverage of key meteorological resources based on the geographical locations of PV power stations and the meteorological resources of weather stations. Next, the historical power correlations between PV power stations are analyzed, and highly correlated stations are connected to construct a topological graph structure. Then, an improved spatio-temporal graph network model is established based on this graph to deeply mine the spatio-temporal characteristics of regional PV power stations. Furthermore, a dual-layer attention mechanism is added to further learn the feature attributes of nodes and enhance the spatio-temporal features extracted by the spatio-temporal graph network, ultimately achieving power prediction for regional PV power stations. Hailfall is a severe local weather event that can cause great economic losses as well as the loss of people's property; however, it is still difficult for domestic meteorological stations to comprehensively observe hail, and domestic independently developed hail observation instruments are still scarce. To help enable better automatic hail observations, a new independently developed hailstone disdrometer based on the acoustic principle, which can be used to measure the hailstone number and particle size and to calculate the corresponding equivalent liquid precipitation of hailstones, is proposed in this paper. The characteristics of hailstones were preliminarily analyzed using observation data from two hailstone disdrometers installed in Aksu, Xinjiang, where three hail events were observed via the hailstone disdrometer in the summer of 2023. By analyzing the development of deep convection clouds using the Fengyun 4A satellite-based cloud-top brightness temperature, and synoptic conditions based on the fifth-generation global climate reanalysis dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (the ECMWF ERA5 dataset), the hail formation mechanism was investigated in detail for one hailfall event. Accurate hail observations are an important basis for understanding spatiotemporal hail variation. The hailstone disdrometer proposed in this study offers a useful approach for domestic hail observation to provide first-hand hail information for the inspection of weather modification effects and disaster prevention and reduction. The prediction of water plant flow should establish relationships between upstream and downstream hydrological stations, which is crucial for the early detection of flow anomalies. Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs) have been widely applied in hydrological time series forecasting. However, due to the highly nonlinear and dynamic nature of hydrological time series, as well as the intertwined coupling of data between multiple hydrological stations, the original LSTM models fail to simultaneously consider the spatiotemporal correlations among input sequences for flow prediction. To address this issue, we propose a novel flow prediction method based on the Spatiotemporal Attention LSTM (STA-LSTM) model. This model, based on an encoder–decoder architecture, integrates spatial attention mechanisms in the encoder to adaptively capture hydrological variables relevant to prediction. The decoder combines temporal attention mechanisms to better propagate gradient information and dynamically discover key encoder hidden states from all time steps within a window. Additionally, we construct an extended dataset, which preprocesses meteorological data with forward filling and rainfall encoding, and combines hydrological data from multiple neighboring pumping stations with external meteorological data to enhance the modeling capability of spatiotemporal relationships. In this paper, the actual production data of pumping stations and water plants along the East-to-West Water Diversion Project are taken as examples to verify the effectiveness of the model. Experimental results demonstrate that our STA-LSTM model can better capture spatiotemporal relationships, yielding improved prediction performance with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.57, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 4.61, and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.001. As climate change intensifies, drought has become a major global engineering and environmental challenge. In critical areas such as agricultural production, accurate drought monitoring is vital for the sustainable development of regional agriculture. Currently, despite extensive use of traditional meteorological stations and remote sensing methods, these approaches have proven to be inadequate in capturing the full extent of drought information and adequately reflecting spatial characteristics. Therefore, to improve the accuracy of drought forecasts and achieve predictions across extensive areas, this paper employs deep learning models, specifically introducing an attention-weighted long short-term memory network model (AW-LSTM), constructs a composite drought monitoring index (CDMI) and validates the model. Results show that: (1) The AW-LSTM model significantly outperforms traditional long short-term memory (LSTM), support vector machine (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN) models in drought monitoring, offering not only better applicability in meteorological and agricultural drought monitoring but also the ability to accurately predict drought events one month in advance compared to machine learning models, providing a new method for precise and comprehensive regional drought assessment. (2) The Huang-Huai-Hai Plain has shown significant regional variations in drought conditions across different years and months, with the drought situation gradually worsening in the northern part of Hebei Province, Beijing, Tianjin, the southern part of Huai North and the central part of Henan Province from 2001 to 2022, while drought conditions in the northern part of Huai North, southern Shandong Province, western Henan Province and southwestern Hebei Province have been alleviated. (3) During the sowing (June) and harvesting (September) periods for summer maize, the likelihood of drought occurrences is higher, necessitating flexible adjustments to agricultural production strategies to adapt to varying drought conditions. This study addresses a crucial gap in understanding the impact of urban morphologies on the canopy urban heat islands (CUHI) effect. The selection of reference stations lacks a unified standard, and their surface air temperature (SAT) sequences are also inevitably influenced by urbanization. However, synchronous observational data from relocated meteorological stations could provide high-quality sample data for studying CUHI. Utilizing remote sensing techniques, the findings of this paper revealed that the observation environment of stations after relocation exhibited remarkable representativeness, with their observation sequences accurately reflecting the local climatic background. The differences in synchronized observation sequences could characterize the CUHI intensity (CUHII). Among the various factors, land use parameters and landscape parameters played particularly significant roles. Furthermore, the fitting performance of the random forest (RF) model for both training and testing data was significantly superior to that of the linear model and support vector regression (SVR) model. Additionally, the influence of local circulation on CUHI could not be overlooked. The serious and frequent typhoon activities can easily cause extreme precipitation weather in the eastern coastal area of China, which is affected by land and sea differences. To explore the temporal and spatial characteristics of Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) and rainfall during the typhoon period, the data of the conspicuous case named 'Meihua' in 2022 is adopted in analysis. In this paper, firstly, the accuracy of the PWV retrieved by ERA5 was evaluated, which met the experimental analysis requirements, compared with the conference value of the Radiosonde (RS). Secondly, the correlation between PWV, rainfall and the typhoon path were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, using 16 meteorological stations in the typhoon path. The results indicated that PWV reached its peak value 2–6 h than rainfall, which was an important reference for rainfall forecasting. Then, the 'Pearson correlation coefficient' method was used for the quantitative evaluation of the correlation between PWV and the distance of the 'weather station-typhoon'. The results showed that PWV had an obvious upward trend, with a decrease in the distance between the 'weather station-typhoon'. The variation in PWV is intense at a reduced distance, and can reach its peak 16 h before the arrival of the typhoon. A strong negative correlation was demonstrated, with an average value of −0.73 for the Pearson correlation coefficient. Analyzing the temporal and spatial changes of the typhoon track, PWV and rainfall, the results show that before the typhoon passes through the region, both the PWV and rainfall certainly reach their maximum. The variation trends of PWV and rainfall in the period of the typhoon are significantly consistent. With the increase in both rainfall and intensity due to climate change, the risk of debris flows is also increasing. In Korea, the increasing damage caused by debris flows has become a social issue, and research on debris-flow response is becoming increasingly important. Understanding the rainfall that induces debris flows is crucial for debris-flow response, and methods such as the I-D method have been used to evaluate and predict the risk of debris flows. However, previous studies on debris flow-induced rainfall analysis have been limited by the subjective decision of the researcher to select the impact meteorological stations, which greatly affects reliability. In this paper, in order to establish an objective standard, various maximum allowable distances between debris-flow disaster areas and meteorological stations were adjusted to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 km using the CTRL-T automatic calculation algorithm, and the optimal maximum allowable distance suitable for Korean terrain was derived through parameter sensitivity analysis. Based on this, we developed a nomogram for sediment disaster risk prediction and warning in Gangwon-do, and applied it to past disaster cases, and found that, although the prediction time for each stage varies depending on the maximum allowable distance, on average, it is possible to predict the risk of sediment flows 4 to 5 h in advance. This paper aims to analyze the weather conditions in Porto Velho (Rondonia, Brazil, Western Amazon) and the influence of air masses on the climatic elements between 2017 and 2018, using rhythmic analysis. Climatic data were obtained through the official weather station, tabulated and statistically organized, and processed in R Studio programming language. The monitoring of air masses occurred through the synoptic charts of the Navy Hydrography Center. The results were analyzed by dry–rainy transition season, rainy season, wet–dry transition season, and dry season. Thus, the results point out that the Tropical Continental mass (mTc) acted up to 62.9%, responsible for the low precipitation index in October 2017. Although the mass has characteristics of warm and unstable weather, it is even lower than the action of the mEc. In January 2018, there was an 85.5% prevalence of the Continental Equatorial Mass (mEc), added to the action of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS), which contributed to an accumulated rainfall of 443 mm/month. In April 2018, the mEC acted with 56.7%, reaching 35.5% in August. Another highlight was the performance of the Tropical Atlantic mass (mTa) (27.4%) and mTc (19.4%), both of which had a crucial role in the dry season, followed by the Polar Atlantic mass (mPa) (17.7%), that contributed to the phenomenon of "coldness" in the region. Therefore, the mEc is extremely important in the control of the relative humidity of the air and the precipitations, while the mTc is a dissipator of winds that, at times, inhibits the performance of the mEc. A prototype of an autonomous system for the retrieval of oceanographic, wave, and meteorologic data was installed and tested in May 2021 on a Portuguese research vessel navigating on the Atlantic Ocean. The system was designed to be installed in fishing vessels that could operate as a distributed network of ocean data collection. It consists of an automatic weather station, a ferrybox with a water pumping system, an inertial measurement unit, a GNSS unit, an onboard desktop computer, and a wave estimator algorithm for wave spectra estimation. Among several parameters collected by this system's sensors are the air temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, sea water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, chlorophyll-a, roll, pitch, heave, true heading, and geolocation of the ship. This paper's objectives are the following: (1) describe the autonomous prototype; and (2) present the data obtained during a full-scale trial; (3) discuss the results, advantages, and limitations of the system and future developments. Meteorologic measurements were validated by a second weather station onboard. The estimated wave parameters and wave spectra showed good agreement with forecasted data from the Copernicus database. Increased computing power has made it possible to run simulations of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical model in high spatial resolution. However, running high-resolution simulations requires a higher-detail mapping of landforms, land use, and land cover. Often, higher-resolution data have limited coverage or availability. This paper presents the feasibility of using CORINE Land Cover (CLC) land use and land cover data and alternative high-resolution global coverage land use/land cover (LULC) data from Copernicus Global Land Service Land Cover Map (CGLS-LC100) V2.0 in high-resolution WRF simulations (100 × 100 m). Global LULC data with a resolution of 100 m are particularly relevant for areas not covered by CLC. This paper presents the method developed by the authors for reclassifying land cover data from CGLS-LC100 to MODIS land use classes with defined parameters in the WRF model and describes the procedure for their implementation into the model. The obtained simulation results of the basic meteorological parameters from the WRF simulation using CLC, CGLS-LC100 and default geographical data from MODIS were compared to observations from 13 meteorological stations in the Warsaw area. The research has indicated noticeable changes in the forecasts of temperature, relative humidity wind speed, and direction after using higher-resolution LULC data. The verification results show a significant difference in weather predictions in terms of CLC and CGLS-LC100 LULC data implementation. Due to the fact that better results were obtained for CLC simulations than for CGLS-LC100, it is suggested that CLC data are first used for simulations in numerical weather prediction models and to use CGLS-LC100 data when the area is outside of CLC coverage. The climate data used for dynamic energy simulation of buildings located in urban regions are usually collected in meteorological stations situated in rural areas, which do not accurately represent the urban microclimate (e.g., urban heat island effect), and this might affect the simulation accuracy. This paper aims at quantitatively evaluating the effects of heat island on a high-rise building's energy performance based on the microclimate simulation tool ENVI-met and the building energy simulation tool COMFIE. However, the computation of microclimate models is time consuming; it is not possible to simulate every day of a year in a reasonable time. This paper proposes a method that generates hourly "site-specific climate data" to avoid long microclimate simulation times. A coupling method of ENVI-met and COMFIE was developed for more precise building energy simulation, accounting for the heat island effect. It was applied to a high-rise building in Wuhan, China. The results showed that the yearly average urban heat island effect intensity at the height of 3 m was estimated to be 0.55 °C and decreased with height. Compared to the simulation considering the outdoor temperature variation with the height and orientation, using the original climate data collected in rural areas led to an overestimation of the heating load by around 5.8% and an underestimation of the cooling load by around 8.7%. Compared to the weather file at the height of 3 m near the north facade neglecting the temperature variation along the height, the heating load was overestimated by 8.2% and the cooling load was underestimated by 10.8%. Seasonal snowpacks, characterized by their snow water equivalent (SWE), can play a major role in the hydrological cycle of montane environments with months of snow accretion followed by episodes of melt controlling flood risk and water resource availability downstream. Quantifying the temporal and spatial patterns of snowpack accumulation and its subsequent melt and runoff is an internationally significant challenge, particularly within mountainous regions featuring complex terrain with limited or absent observational data. Here we report a new approach to snowpack characterization using open-source global satellite and modelled data products (precipitation and SWE) greatly enhancing the utility of the widely used Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The paper focusses on the c. 23,000 km2 Chenab river basin (CRB) in the headwaters of the Indus Basin, globally important because of its large and growing population and increasing water insecurity due to climate change. We used five area-weighted averaged satellite, gridded and reanalysis precipitation datasets: ERA5-Land, CMORPH, TRMM, APHRODITE and CPC UPP. As well as comparison to local weather station data, these were used in SWAT to model streamflow for evaluation against observed streamflow at the basin outlet. ERA5-Land data provided the best streamflow match-ups and was used to infer snowpack (SWE) dynamics at basin and sub-basin scales. Snow reference data were derived from remote sensing and modelled SWE re-analysis products: ULCA-SWE and KRA-SWE, respectively. Beyond conventional auto-calibration and single-variable approaches we undertook multi-variable calibration using R-SWAT to manually adjust snow parameters alongside observed streamflow data. Characterization of basin-wide patterns of snowpack build-up and melt (SWE dynamics) were greatly strengthened using KRA-SWE data accompanied by improved streamflow simulation in sub-basins dominated by seasonal snow cover. UCLA-SWE data also improved SWE estimations using R-SWAT but weakened the performance of simulated streamflow due to under capture of seasonal runoff from permanent snow/ice fields in the CRB. This research highlights the utility and value of remote sensing and modelling data to drive better understanding of snowpack dynamics and their contribution to runoff in the absence of in situ snowpack data in high-altitude environments. This article addresses the simulation of urban air temperatures with a focus on evaluating the Urban Weather Generator (UWG) model over Toulouse, France. As urban temperatures, influenced by factors like urbanization, anthropogenic heat release, and complex urban geometry, exhibit an urban heat island (UHI) effect, understanding and mitigating UHI become crucial. With increasing global warming and urban populations, aiding urban planners necessitates accurate simulations requiring data at the canyon level. The paper evaluates UWG's performance in simulating air temperatures under realistic conditions, emphasizing an operational context and a non-specialist user's perspective. The evaluation includes selecting the most suitable meteorological station, assessing the impact of the rural station choice, and conducting a sensitivity analysis of input parameters. The validation demonstrates good agreement, with a mean bias error (MBE) of 0.02 °C and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.73 °C. Solar radiation data play a pivotal role in harnessing solar energy. Unfortunately, the availability of these data is limited due to the sparse distribution of meteorological stations worldwide. This paper introduces and simulates three models designed for estimating and predicting global solar radiation at ground level. Furthermore, it conducts an in-depth analysis and comparison of the simulation results derived from these models, utilizing measured data from selected sites in Algeria where such information is accessible. The focus of our study revolves around three empirical models: Capderou, Lacis and Hansen, and Liu and Jordan. These models utilize day number and solar factor as input parameters, along with the primary site's geographical coordinates—longitude, latitude, and altitude. Additionally, meteorological parameters such as relative humidity, temperature, and pressure are incorporated into the models. The objective is to estimate global solar radiation for any given day throughout the year at the specified location. Upon simulation, the results highlight that the Capderou model exhibits superior accuracy in approximating solar components, demonstrating negligible deviations between real and estimated values, especially under clear-sky conditions. However, these models exhibit certain limitations in adverse weather conditions. The paper explores the occurrence of minimal precipitation extremes at specific meteorological stations in the southeastern region of Serbia. With climate change leading to increased instances of droughts, these natural phenomena have garnered heightened interest due to their negative impacts on society, environment, and the economy. Employing the SPI-12 index in the southeastern part of Serbia from 1946 to 2021, the study sheds light on the vulnerability of this natural phenomenon in the observed stations. The Photovoltaic Geographical Information System (PVGIS) is a web application that provides free access to solar radiation and temperature data, typical meteorological year (TMY) data, and to photovoltaic performance assessment tools for any place in most parts of the world. The PVGIS was originally developed over 20 years ago, and since then, it has been under continuous development. At present, there are two versions of the PVGIS online—the older version 5.1 and the newest version 5.2. PVGIS 5.2 includes substantial improvements compared to the previous version, e.g., the update of the underlying data sets both in terms of quality, resolution, and geographical coverage and the extension of the time period used. This paper focuses on comparing the TMYs (and more specifically the TMY time series of air temperature), coming from both PVGIS 5.1 and 5.2, with the TMY produced on the basis of ground station meteorological data and with the ground station data itself. The results show that whereas overall the errors and biases for most locations are within the expected range (mean stationRMSE 4.27), these differences increase in places with complicated topography, e.g., in the Alps (maximum stationRMSE 9.50). Precipitation datasets derived from reanalysis products play a crucial role in weather forecasting and hydrological applications. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of two distinct reanalysis precipitation products, i.e., the first-generation Chinese global land-surface reanalysis precipitation product (CRA40) and the fifth-generation European reanalysis precipitation product (ERA5), over mainland China. The evaluation is based on continuous and categorical statistical indicators with daily-scale gridded-point rain gauge data obtained from Chinese surface meteorological stations. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) CRA40 demonstrates a clear superiority over ERA5 in terms of the 13-year daily mean precipitation and seasonal daily precipitation. CRA40 exhibits better correlation coefficients (0.97), relative biases (5.25%), root mean square errors (0.34 mm), and fractional standard errors (0.05). (2) Both reanalyzed precipitation products generally exhibit an overestimation of precipitation in mainland China. The degree of overestimation is particularly pronounced in dry climatic regions (e.g., QZ, XJ), while wet regions (e.g., CJ, HN) demonstrate relatively less overestimation. (3) ERA5 shows better performance in the detection of daily precipitation. Neither CRA40 nor ERA5 can capture heavy precipitation events well. Current weather monitoring systems often remain out of reach for small-scale users and local communities due to their high costs and complexity. This paper addresses this significant issue by introducing a cost-effective, easy-to-use local weather station. Utilizing low-cost sensors, this weather station is a pivotal tool in making environmental monitoring more accessible and user-friendly, particularly for those with limited resources. It offers efficient in-site measurements of various environmental parameters, such as temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, carbon dioxide concentration, and particulate matter, including PM 1, PM 2.5, and PM 10. The findings demonstrate the station's capability to monitor these variables remotely and provide forecasts with a high degree of accuracy, displaying an error margin of just 0.67%. Furthermore, the station's use of the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model enables short-term, reliable forecasts crucial for applications in agriculture, transportation, and air quality monitoring. Furthermore, the weather station's open-source nature significantly enhances environmental monitoring accessibility for smaller users and encourages broader public data sharing. A sun photometer is a type of photometer that points at the sun, and it has been playing an increasingly important role in characterizing aerosols across the world. As long as the solar photometer is accurately calibrated, the optical thickness of the aerosol can be obtained from the measured value of this device. When the calibration of a single instrument is not accurate, the inversion quantity varies greatly. The calibration constant of the sun photometer changes during its use process; thus, calibrations are frequently needed in order to ensure the accuracy of the measured value. The calibration constant of the solar photometer is usually determined using the Langley method. Internationally, AERONET has two Langley calibration stations: the Mauna Loa observatory in the United States and the Izaña observatory in Spain. So far, the International Comparison and Calibration System has been established in Beijing, similar to AERONET at GSFC, but the Langley calibration system has not yet been established. Therefore, it is necessary to select a suitable calibration station in China. This paper studies the requirements of the calibration station using the Langley method. We used long-term records of satellite-derived measurements and survey data belonging to the aerosol optical thickness data of SNPP/VIIRS, CERES, MERRA-2, etc., in order to gain a better understanding of whether these stations are suitable for calibration. From the existing astronomical observation stations, meteorological stations, and the Sun–Sky Radiometer Observation Network (SONET) observation stations in China, the qualified stations were selected. According to the statistical data from the Ali observatory, the monthly average of clear sky is 20.21 days, and it is always greater than 15 days. The monthly average of aerosol is not more than 0.15 and is less than 0.3. We believe that the atmosphere above the Ali observatory is stable, and the results show that the Ali observatory has excellent weather conditions. This study can provide a selection of calibration sites for solar photometer calibrations in China that may need to be further characterized and evaluated, and at the same time provide a method to exclude unsuitable calibration sites. The rational use of natural wind in extra-long tunnels for feedforward operation ventilation control can dramatically reduce tunnel operation costs. However, traditional tunnel natural wind calculation theory lacks a prediction function. This paper proposes a three-stage tunnel natural wind prediction method relying on the Yanglin Tunnel in Yunnan, China based on the massive meteorological parameters provided by the open-source national meteorological stations around the tunnel, which make up for the partial deficiency of the meteorological parameters of the tunnel portal. The multi-layer perceptron model (MLP) was used to predict the real-time meteorological parameters of the tunnel portal using the data from four national meteorological stations. The nonlinear autoregressive network model (NARX) was used to predict the meteorological parameters of the tunnel portal in the next period based on the predicted and measured real-time data. The natural wind speed in the tunnel was obtained by a theoretical calculation method using the predicted meteorological parameters. The final tunnel natural wind prediction results are in good agreement with the field measured data, which indicates that the research results of this paper can play a guiding role in the feedforward regulation of tunnel operation fans. This paper intends to clarify that the spatial and temporal evolutionary patterns of regional vegetation and their relationship with climate form a premise of ecological conservation and environmental governance, and play an important role in maintaining regional ecosystem balance and promoting sustainable development. Based on measured data collected from NDVI remote sensing products and meteorological stations, NDVI variation in Anhui Province from 2001 to 2019 was determined through trend analysis and measurement methods involving coefficient of variation and Hurst index; in addition, the response to climatic factors was also explored. It was concluded that, firstly, in terms of spatiotemporal analysis, the interannual variation of NDVI in Anhui Province showed an increasing trend with a rate of 0.024/10 a, while the monthly variation showed a weak bimodal pattern, with the highest value in August and the lowest value in January. Furthermore, NDVI in Anhui Province showed significant spatial heterogeneity, with high values concentrated in mountainous regions in southern Anhui and Dabie Mountain region, and low values concentrated in the hilly areas of Jianghuai and areas along the Yangtze River. At the same time, the overall spatial variation of NDVI showed an increasing trend, and the areas with extremely significant and significant improvement in vegetation coverage accounted for 54.69% of the total area of Anhui Province. Secondly, in terms of the analysis on variation characteristics, the variation of NDVI in Anhui Province was generally stable, with an average CV coefficient of variation of 0.089, which, however, was quite different in different regions; meanwhile, the future trend of NDVI variation in the study areas was mostly in a random manner. Thirdly, the response of NDVI in Anhui Province to climatic factors showed significant spatial heterogeneity. NDVI was found to be positively correlated with precipitation and negatively correlated with temperature; in general, the impact of precipitation on NDVI was greater than that of temperature. In the 19 years studied, NDVI in Anhui Province showed an increasing trend; and climate, topography and human activities led to heterogeneous spatial distribution of vegetation. The relationship between outdoor microclimate and indoor building conditions requires the input of hourly weather data on the typical meteorological characteristics of the specific location. These data, known as typical meteorological year (TMY), are mainly deduced from the multi-year records of meteorological stations outside urban centres, preventing the actual complex interactions between solar radiation, wind speed, and high urban density. These factors create the urban heat island effect and higher ambient air temperatures, skewing the assumptions for energy demand in buildings. This paper presents a computational method for assessing the effect of the urban climate in the generation of typical weather data for dynamic energy calculations. As such, the paper discusses an evaluation method of pairing ENVI-met 4 microclimate and IES-VE building energy modelling software to produce a typical urban specific weather dataset (USWDs) that reflects the actual microclimatic conditions. The ENVI-met results for the outdoor microclimate conditions were employed to determine the thermal boundaries for the IES-VE, and then used to compute the building's energy consumption. The energy modelling that employed the USWDs achieved better performance compared to the TMY, as the former had just a 6% variation from the actual electricity consumption of the building compared to 15% for the latter. Meteorological drought (MDr) causes considerable economic losses in many countries, including in relation to agriculture. To examine the diversity of seasonal meteorological drought in Poland, the study uses monthly precipitation sums in the period from March to November, collected from 74 ground-based meteorological stations in 1951–2020. The paper defines meteorological drought on the basis of the standardized precipitation index in three seasons (SPI-3) and differentiates three degrees of drought intensity: extreme, severe and moderate. The study also calculates the size of Poland's area affected by meteorological drought (AAMDr) and determines the relationship between AAMDr and SPI-3. MDr in Poland occurred more frequently in spring and autumn (every 4–5 years) than in summer (every 7 years). In the areas affected by extreme drought, precipitation was below the average, mainly ≤50% of the climatic norm, and air temperature values were below or above the average of the climatic norm, mainly ranging from −1.0 to 1.0 °C. A significant negative correlation between AAMDr and SPI-3 indices was found. The obtained results could be useful for managing climatic risk and developing regional and local agriculture adaptation plans aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. In order to study and forecast extreme weather, a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the spatial and temporal relationship between Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV), predicted by Numerical Weather Predication (NWP) data, and precipitation, is necessary. The goal of this paper was to study the temporal and spatial relationship between PWV and precipitation during the so-called 'July 20' (18–21 July 2021) heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou. Firstly, the PWV data provided by 120 radiosonde stations uniformly distributed throughout the world, and two IGS stations in China, in 2020, was used to evaluate the accuracy of PWV estimation by ERA5 and MERRA-2 data, and the factors affecting the accuracy of NWP PWV were explored. Secondly, ERA5 PWV and the precipitation data of six meteorological stations were used to qualitatively analyze the relationship between PWV and precipitation during the 'July 20' heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou. Finally, a quantitative study was conducted by an eigenvalue matching method. The main experimental results were as follows. Compared with MERRA-2 PWV, the accuracy of ERA5 PWV was slightly higher. Latitude, altitude and season were the influencing factors of the NWP PWV estimation accuracy. The change trend of ERA5 PWV was consistent with both 24 h cumulative precipitation and surface precipitation during the 'July 20' heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou. The average optimal matching degree and optimal matching time between NWP PWV and surface precipitation during the 'July 20' heavy rainstorm in Zhengzhou was 56.6% and 3.68 h, respectively. Smart-city management systems use information about the environment, including the current values of weather factors. The specificity of the urban sites requires a high density of weather measurement points, which forces the use of low-cost sensors. A typical problem of devices using low-cost sensors is the lack of legalization of the sensors and the resulting inaccuracy and uncertainty of measurement, which one can attempt to solve by additional sensor calibration. In this paper, we propose a different approach to this problem, i.e., the two-stage selection of sensors, carried out on the basis of both the literature (pre-selection) and experiments (actual selection). We formulated the criteria of the sensor selection for the needs of the sources of weather information: the major one, which is the fast response time of a sensor in a cyber-physical subsystem and two minor ones, which are based on the intrinsic information quality dimensions related to measurement information. These criteria were tested by using a set of twelve weather sensors from different manufacturers. Results show that the two-stage sensor selection allows us to choose the least energy consuming (due to the major criterion) and the most accurate (due to the minor criteria) set of weather sensors, and is able to replace some methods of sensor selection reported in the literature. The proposed method is, however, more versatile and can be used to select any sensors with a response time comparable to electric ones, and for the application of low-cost sensors that are not related to weather stations. Activities related to the planning and operation of power systems use premise load forecasting, which is responsible for providing a load estimative for a given horizon that assists mainly in the operation of an electrical system. Hierarchical short-term load forecasting (STLF) becomes an approach used for this purpose, where the overall forecast is performed through system partition in smaller macro-regions and, soon after, is aggregated to compose a global forecast. In this context, this paper presents a bottom-up STLF approach for macro-regions. The main innovation is the Average Consumption per Meteorological Region (CERM) index, used to weigh the importance of each station meteorological (EM) in total load demand. Another index, the Variation of Load and Temperature (IVCT), based on historical temperature and demand changes, is proposed. These indexes are incorporated into an ANN model of the multi-layer perceptron type (MLP). The results showed a higher average performance of the index CERM and variable IVCT in relation to the other combinations performed, and the best results were used to compose the prediction of the MTR. Finally, the proposed model presented a Mean Absolute Percentage Error lower than 1%, presenting superior performance compared to an aggregate model for MTR, which shows the efficiency and contribution of the proposed methodology. Sub-hourly heavy precipitation events (SHHPs) associated with regional low-pressure (RegL) systems in Portugal are a natural hazard that may have significant socioeconomic implications, namely in agriculture. Therefore, in this paper, their dynamic and thermodynamic drivers are analysed. Three weather stations were used to isolate SHHPs from 2000 to 2022. Higher precipitation variability is found in southern Portugal, with a higher ratio of extreme events on fewer rainy days. This study shows that these SHHP events are associated with low-pressure systems located just to the west of the Iberian Peninsula. These systems exhibit a cold core, particularly strong at mid-levels, and a positive vorticity anomaly, which is stronger in the upper troposphere, extending downward to low levels. These conditions drive differential positive vorticity advection and, therefore, rising motion to the east of the low-pressure systems. Moreover, at low levels, these systems promote moisture advection over western Iberia, also generating instability conditions, which are assessed by instability indices (Convective available potential energy, the Total-Totals index, and the K-index). The combination of these conditions drives heavy precipitation events. Lastly, the total column cloud ice water revealed higher values for the heavier precipitation events, suggesting that it may be a useful predictor of such events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The special terrain of Urumqi (in the valley area) often triggers strong foehn winds, causing huge losses to local people's lives and social economies. By using the surface observation data of the hourly temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind from the downwind Urumqi Meteorological Station and the upwind Dabancheng Meteorological Station in the Middle Tianshan Canyon and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data during 2008–2022, this paper establishes the dataset of foehn processes at Urumqi Station in the past 15 years and analyzes the variation rules of the associated meteorological variables during the foehn processes. In addition, based on the physical mechanism of the occurrence of foehn, a three-element identification criterion (i.e., 94° ≤ 2 min average wind direction ≤ 168°, 2 min average wind speed ≥ 2.0 m/s, and Δθ between Urumqi station and Dabancheng station ≥ 0.29 K) for foehn in Urumqi is established by comparing and analyzing the variations of wind direction (WD), wind speed (WS), and the potential temperature difference (Δθ) between the two weather stations during the periods of foehn and non-foehn winds from 2013 to 2022. In addition, the performance of the three-element identification criterion is verified, and the results suggest that this criterion has an accuracy of 82.96% and a hit rate of 89.50% for the 2008–2012 foehn events in Urumqi. Moreover, the hit rate of this criterion for foehn wind of gale or above level (i.e., a 2 min wind ≥ 10.8 m/s on average) is 100%. In addition, combined with two predictors of sea-level pressure difference (ΔP) and Δθ between downwind stations and upwind stations, the foehn forecast can be more accurate than that provided by a single predictor. The shortage of water resources is a long-standing constraint on the development of the Chinese economy and society. In this paper, the climate change occurring in Hulan River Basin is analyzed using the data collected at Wangkui Meteorological Station from 1960 to 2020. The overall temperature in the basin shows an upward trend, with a cumulative increase of 1.6 °C, as does the precipitation, which reaches 566.2 mm. In contrast, there is a downward trend shown by wind speed, with a cumulative decrease of 1.313 m/s. GIS remote sensing technology is applied to build a SWAT distributed hydrological model for the purpose of conducting runoff simulation in Hulan River Basin, and SWAT-CUP software is used to correct and analyze the simulation results. The parameters of snow melt are set to improve the accuracy of the model. The runoff data collected from Lanxi Hydrological Station from 2008 to 2020 are used to verify the model. The results show that the efficiency coefficient (NES) and correlation coefficient (R2) are 0.75 and 0.84, respectively, in the validation period from 2010 to 2013, while they are 0.77 and 0.93, respectively, in the correction period from 2014 to 2016, meeting the criteria of model evaluation. It can be seen from results noted above that SWAT is applicable in Hulan River Basin, providing a certain reference for the management of hydrological and water resources available in this region and for the construction of a distributed hydrological model of rivers in those high-latitude cold regions. The paper compares air and sea surface temperatures in recent years on two islands in the Adriatic Sea. The data measured at the climatological station Krk on the island of Krk and the main meteorological station Lastovo on the island of Lastovo are used. The island of Krk is located in the north of the Adriatic Sea and Lastovo in the south. Since a significant increase in air and sea surface temperatures has been observed over the last thirty years, the goal is to establish how they reflect at these two stations, 313 km apart. The goal of the analysis is to monitor the changes in these two islands to reduce the negative impacts they may cause. The analysis of sea temperatures showed that global warming has a greater impact in the northern Adriatic than in the southern Adriatic. Air and sea surface temperatures have a faster upward trend on Krk than on Lastovo. The availability of hydrological data for small hydropower plants is an important prerequisite for reservoir scheduling, reservoir flood control and integrated water resources. To address the problem of a lack of hydrological data in small hydropower plants, this paper proposes a method to predict the power generation flow of small hydropower stations without hydrological data using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool model (SWAT) when the traditional data-driven methods cannot study the problem of power generation flow prediction in small hydropower stations well. The method can use gridded meteorological data as the input of the model to solve the problem of small hydropower stations without meteorological data. The problem that small hydropower plants without hydrological data cannot calibrate the hydrological model is solved by calculating the generation flow through the output of small hydropower station and by using the similarity analysis method to migrate the generation flow of similar small hydropower stations. The model was tested in a watershed in southwest China to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the coefficient of determination between the predicted and measured values of small hydropower stations without information is about 0.84, which achieves a better prediction. Based on the daily temperature and precipitation data from 1961 to 2021 obtained from 2019 national meteorological stations of China, and by means of Meteorological Drought Comprehensive Index (MCI) and some improved identification methods, we identified all drought event processes in all the seven regions of China in this paper. We also carefully analyzed these regional droughts and made following conclusions: drought was spreading towards southern China with an increasing frequency; consecutive drought year group occurred in all the seven regions of China with an increasing frequency under the background of global warming; both drought duration and comprehensive intensity consistently changed with the area affected by drought, with a correlation coefficient of 0.52–0.67 and 0.88–0.99 respectively, and passed the significance test of 0.05. The method used in this paper could be employed to effectively monitor and evaluate drought processes from multiple dimensions including duration, comprehensive intensity and area affected by drought. Thehe purpose of this study consists of three main points: estimating the actual evapotranspiration (ET) of these rain gardens at daily steps; assessing the impact of different configurations on ET fluxes; and comparing the actual ETs obtained from the lysimeters with reference to ET values, such as evaporation, from a pan evaporimeter and some models taken from the literature. In comparison with the station-derived PM-ET, the ANN-based derived PET showed high accuracy, while validating the spatial distribution and the ANN model-estimated daily PET showed high accuracy at all KMA stations. The state-of- the art review study research presented by MchMahon et al. [[12]] identifies six areas for further research which are: (i) hard-wired potential evaporation estimates; (ii) estimating evaporation without wind data; (iii) estimating evaporation without at-site data; (iv) dealing with an environment undergoing climate: increasing annual air temperature but decreasing pan evaporation rates; (v) daily meteorological data averaging over 24 h or day-light hours only; and (vi) finally, uncertainty in evaporation estimates. The seasonal dynamics and the relative significance of each determinant of ET in the rain gardens were highlighted and the results could be used to investigate the modelling of hydrological processes in urban rain gardens. In weather forecasting, numerical weather prediction (NWP) that is based on physical models requires proper post-processing before it can be applied to actual operations. Therefore, research on intelligent post-processing algorithms has always been an important topic in this field. This paper proposes a model output deep learning (MODL) method for post-processing, which can improve the forecast effect of numerical weather prediction. MODL is an end-to-end post-processing method based on deep convolutional neural network, which directly learns the mapping relationship between the forecast fields output by numerical model and the observation temperature field in order to obtain more accurate temperature forecasts. MODL modifies the existing deep convolution model according to the post-processing problem's characteristics, thereby improving the performance of the weather forecast. This paper uses The International Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) dataset from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the observed air temperature of 2 m obtained from Tianjin meteorological station in order to test the post-processing performance of MODL. The MODL method applied to temperature in post-processing is compared with the ECMWF forecast, Model Output Statistics (MOS) methods, and Model Output Machine Learning (MOML) methods. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the temperature field predicted by MODL and the observed temperature field is smaller than the other models and the accuracy of the temperature difference of 2 °C (Acc) is higher, especially where the prediction time is in the first three days. Rapid population growth, industrialization, and agricultural activities have impacted water resources in the arid and semi-arid areas of Somalia. The Lower Juba region in Somalia has been the most affected region. Therefore, an analysis of the hydrological patterns is essential. This paper assesses streamflow and evapotranspiration in the Wabiga Juba basin in Somalia using a hydrological simulation model, namely, the water evaluation and planning (WEAP) system via the soil moisture method. The datasets included 53 (average precipitation) and 13 (streamflow) year periods from two meteorological stations. The estimated values for potential evapotranspiration (11,921.98 to 20,775.39 MCM) were higher than the actual evapotranspiration (4904.10 to 8242.72 MCM) by 50 to 79.5%, respectively. The annual streamflow in Juba Dolow and runoff proportion of the Wabiga Juba River was estimated to be 10% of the annual precipitation. Most of the surface runoff occurred in April (47%), May (31%), October (5%), and November (14%). The streamflow variation responded to the pattern of precipitation. The model performance achieved a Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) coefficient of 0.71, coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.91, and percent bias (PBIAS) of 14%. This paper analyses the conceptual application of a wireless power transfer (WPT) system with multiple resonators supplying outdoor sensors using a mobile charger. The solution is based on the idea of using sensors, located in open space, to monitor environmental parameters. Instead of the typical two-coil WPT with a single charger, energy transfer is realized simultaneously, using a group of identical planar coils as transmitters and receivers connected to the independent power supply circuits of each sensor and microcontroller. By isolating these charged circuits, a higher reliability and powering flexibility of the weather station can be achieved. The concept of the proposed system was discussed, and it was proposed to include the main devices in it. A theoretical analysis was performed considering all mutual couplings and the skin effect; hence, the system is characterized by a matrix equation and sufficient formulae are given. The calculations were verified experimentally for different frequencies, two possible distances between the transmitters and receivers, and equivalent loads. Both the efficiency and load power are compared and discussed, showing that this solution can provide power to ultra-low-power devices, yet the efficiency must still be improved. At the small distance between the transmitting and receiving coils (5 mm), the maximum efficiency value was about 40%, with a load resistance of 10 Ω. The Internet of Things (IoT) plays a critical role in remotely monitoring a wide variety of different application sectors, including agriculture, building, and energy. The wind turbine energy generator (WTEG) is a real-world application that can take advantage of IoT technologies, such as a low-cost weather station, where human activities can be significantly affected by enhancing the production of clean energy based on the known direction of the wind. Meanwhile, common weather stations are neither affordable nor customizable for specific applications. Moreover, due to weather forecast changes over time and location within the same city, it is not efficient to rely on a limited number of weather stations that may be located far away from a recipient's location. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on presenting a low-cost weather station that relies on an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that can be distributed across a WTEG area with minimal cost. The proposed study measures multiple weather parameters, such as wind direction, wind velocity (WV), temperature, pressure, mean sea level, and relative humidity to provide current measurements to recipients and AI-based forecasts. In addition, the proposed study consists of several heterogeneous nodes and a controller for each station in a target area. The collected data can be transmitted through Bluetooth low energy (BLE). The experimental results reveal that the proposed study matches the standard of the National Meteorological Center (NMC), with a nowcast measurement of 95% accuracy for WV and 92% for wind direction (WD). The study of climate element distribution models under complex terrain conditions is a popular topic in the field of GIS application in climatology, especially in plateau areas with a complex topography and scarce meteorological station information. In this paper, the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of temperature and precipitation at the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau was analyzed by taking the northeastern edge of the plateau as the study area and constructing a topographic spatial statistical model using 47 meteorological stations and digital elevation models from 1981 to 2010. The following conclusions were drawn from the study: (1) The ME of the temperature distribution model for each month is below 0.9 °C; the maximum ME of the precipitation distribution model for each month is −5.808 mm in July, and the precipitation distribution model has similar error characteristics with the temperature distribution model, which can reflect the horizontal zone distribution pattern of meteorological data and can clearly show the changes of temperature and precipitation as the altitude increases. (2) The spatial distribution pattern of temperature is as follows: the temperature in the study area gradually increases from the southwest to the northeast, with Zhouqu County in Linxia Prefecture and Gannan Prefecture as the main high-temperature areas; the spatial distribution of precipitation is as follows: the precipitation in the southwest of the study area is significantly higher than that in the north, and the precipitation in Linxia Prefecture is significantly lower than that in Gannan Prefecture. (3) The temporal distribution pattern of the temperature distribution model is as follows: the overall temperature in the study area is at its lowest level in January, and the maximum temperature is only 2.6 °C, until July, when the maximum temperature rises to 24.2 °C and then gradually starts to decline; the spatial distribution of precipitation is as follows: the precipitation in the study area gradually rises from January, and the maximum precipitation rises to July and then starts to decline, and in December the precipitation falls to the lowest level. The temporal distribution characteristics of the precipitation distribution model are similar to those of the air temperature model, with obvious hydrothermal synchronization characteristics. The paper compares precipitation measurements from the Stratus manual rain gauge from the CoCoRaHS network and two Davis Vantage Vue and Davis Vantage Pro 2A rain gauges with the Hellmann rain gauge. Comparative measurements were made on a specially prepared experimental plot. The statistical calculations took into account 15 full months in the period from 1 October 2019, to 31 December 2020. In order to estimate the differences in measurements between amateur rain gauges and the Hellmann rain gauge, two statistics were calculated: the mean square error (MSE) and the mean absolute error (MAE). In order to present formal and more detailed differences in measurements between amateur rain gauges and the Hellmann rain gauge, analyses were performed using a linear regression model. The general form of the tested models was presented. The procedure for estimating the parameters of the models and the method of comparing the fit of the models to the data were described, and the rain gauge whose measurements were most closely related to the measurements of the Hellmann rain gauge was indicated. The study showed that the higher price of amateur rain gauges does not mean higher quality. The study showed that the Stratus rain gauge was the best at recording daily precipitation totals. The Davis Vantage Pro 2A rain gauge recorded daily precipitation sums with less accuracy. The Davis Vantage Vue rain gauge, despite being located on the roof, recorded similar rainfall totals as the Hellmann rain gauge. It was found that, despite the different construction and measurement methods, the precipitation measurement data from the Stratus rain gauge and the Davis Vantage Vue rain gauge are suitable both for climate monitoring and for use, after applying quality control, in NMHS networks. Featured Application: The present analysis provides evidence on the importance of the correct evaluation of the defrosting cycles in the determination of the SCOP of ASHPs. In this paper, dynamic simulations of the seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of Air-Source Heat Pumps will be presented by considering three different heat pump systems coupled with the same building located in three different Italian municipalities: S. Benedetto del Tronto (42°58′ North, 13°53′ East), Milan (45°28′ North, 9°10′ East), and Livigno (46°28′ North, 10°8′ East). Dynamic simulations were conducted by employing the software package TRNSYS and by considering real weather data (i.e., outdoor air temperature and humidity as well as solar radiation) referring to the three abovementioned cities for a period of 8 years (2013–2020) and collected from on-site weather stations. Attention has been paid to the modeling of the heat pump defrost cycles in order to evaluate their influence on the unit's seasonal performance. Results show that, when referring to different years, the thermal energy demand displays huge variations (in some cases it can even double its value), while the effective SCOP is characterized by scarce variability.
