Defect pattern analysis of wafer bin maps (WBMs) is an important means of identifying process problems. Recently, automated analysis methods using machine learning or deep learning have been studied as alternatives to manual classification by engineers. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the feature extraction performance of defect patterns by transforming the polar coordinate system instead of the existing WBM image input. To reduce the variability of the location representation, defect patterns in the Cartesian coordinate system, where the location of the distributed defect die is not constant, were converted to a polar coordinate system. The CNN classifier, which uses polar coordinate transformed input, achieved a classification accuracy of 91.3%, which is 4.8% better than the existing WBM image-based CNN classifier. Additionally, a tree-structured classifier model that sequentially connects binary classifiers achieved a classification accuracy of 94%. The method proposed in this paper is also applicable to the defect pattern classification of WBMs consisting of different die sizes than the training data. Finally, the paper proposes an automated pattern classification method that uses individual classifiers to learn defect types and then applies ensemble techniques for multiple defect pattern classification. In recent years, deep learning methods have achieved remarkable success in hyperspectral image classification (HSIC), and the utilization of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has proven to be highly effective. However, there are still several critical issues that need to be addressed in the HSIC task, such as the lack of labeled training samples, which constrains the classification accuracy and generalization ability of CNNs. To address this problem, a deep multi-scale attention fusion network (DMAF-NET) is proposed in this paper. This network is based on multi-scale features and fully exploits the deep features of samples from multiple levels and different perspectives with an aim to enhance HSIC results using limited samples. The innovation of this article is mainly reflected in three aspects: Firstly, a novel baseline network for multi-scale feature extraction is designed with a pyramid structure and densely connected 3D octave convolutional network enabling the extraction of deep-level information from features at different granularities. Secondly, a multi-scale spatial–spectral attention module and a pyramidal multi-scale channel attention module are designed, respectively. This allows modeling of the comprehensive dependencies of coordinates and directions, local and global, in four dimensions. Finally, a multi-attention fusion module is designed to effectively combine feature mappings extracted from multiple branches. Emotion analysis is the key technology in human–computer emotional interaction and has gradually become a research hotspot in the field of artificial intelligence. The key problems of emotion analysis based on EEG are feature extraction and classifier design. The existing methods of emotion analysis mainly use machine learning and rely on manually extracted features. As an end-to-end method, deep learning can automatically extract EEG features and classify them. However, most of the deep learning models of emotion recognition based on EEG still need manual screening and data pre-processing, and the accuracy and convenience are not high enough. Therefore, this paper proposes a CNN-Bi-LSTM-Attention model to automatically extract the features and classify emotions based on EEG signals. The original EEG data are used as input, a CNN and a Bi-LSTM network are used for feature extraction and fusion, and then the electrode channel weights are balanced through the attention mechanism layer. Finally, the EEG signals are classified to different kinds of emotions. An emotion classification experiment based on EEG is conducted on the SEED dataset to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively classify EEG emotions. The method was assessed on two distinctive classification tasks, one with three and one with four target classes. The average ten-fold cross-validation classification accuracy of this method is 99.55% and 99.79%, respectively, corresponding to three and four classification tasks, which is significantly better than the other methods. It can be concluded that our method is superior to the existing methods in emotion recognition, which can be widely used in many fields, including modern neuroscience, psychology, neural engineering, and computer science as well. In the field of image fusion, spatial detail blurring and color distortion appear in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and multispectral (MS) during the traditional fusion process due to the difference in sensor imaging mechanisms. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a fusion method for SAR images and MS images based on a convolutional neural network. In order to make use of the spatial information and different scale feature information of high-resolution SAR image, a dual-channel feature extraction module is constructed to obtain a SAR image feature map. In addition, different from the common direct addition strategy, an attention-based feature fusion module is designed to achieve spectral fidelity of the fused images. In order to obtain better spectral and spatial retention ability of the network, an unsupervised joint loss function is designed to train the network. In this paper, the Sentinel 1 SAR images and Landsat 8 MS images are used as datasets for experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in quantitative and visual representation when compared with traditional fusion methods and deep learning algorithms. This paper proposed a real-time fault diagnostic method for hydraulic systems using data collected from multiple sensors. The method is based on a proposed multi-sensor convolutional neural network (MS-CNN) that incorporates feature extraction, sensor selection, and fault diagnosis into an end-to-end model. Both the sensor selection process and fault diagnosis process are based on abstract fault-related features learned by a CNN deep learning model. Therefore, compared with the traditional sensor-and-feature selection method, the proposed MS-CNN can find the sensor channels containing higher-level fault-related features, which provides two advantages for diagnosis. First, the sensor selection can reduce the redundant information and improve the diagnostic performance of the model. Secondly, the reduced number of sensors simplifies the model, reducing communication burden and computational complexity. These two advantages make the MS-CNN suitable for real-time hydraulic system fault diagnosis, in which the multi-sensor feature extraction and the computation speed are both significant. The proposed MS-CNN approach is evaluated experimentally on an electric-hydraulic subsea control system test rig and an open-source dataset. The proposed method shows obvious superiority in terms of both diagnosis accuracy and computational speed when compared with traditional CNN models and other state-of-the-art multi-sensor diagnostic methods. A brain–computer interface (BCI) is a computer-based system that allows for communication between the brain and the outer world, enabling users to interact with computers using neural activity. This brain signal is obtained from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. A significant obstacle to the development of BCIs based on EEG is the classification of subject-independent motor imagery data since EEG data are very individualized. Deep learning techniques such as the convolutional neural network (CNN) have illustrated their influence on feature extraction to increase classification accuracy. In this paper, we present a multi-branch (five branches) 2D convolutional neural network that employs several hyperparameters for every branch. The proposed model achieved promising results for cross-subject classification and outperformed EEGNet, ShallowConvNet, DeepConvNet, MMCNN, and EEGNet_Fusion on three public datasets. Our proposed model, EEGNet Fusion V2, achieves 89.6% and 87.8% accuracy for the actual and imagined motor activity of the eegmmidb dataset and scores of 74.3% and 84.1% for the BCI IV-2a and IV-2b datasets, respectively. Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has been extensively applied for analyzing remotely sensed images. HSI data consist of multiple bands that provide abundant spatial information. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as powerful deep learning methods for processing visual data. In recent work, CNNs have shown impressive results in HSI classification. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical neural network architecture called feature extraction with hybrid spectral CNN (FE-HybridSN) to extract superior spectral–spatial features. FE-HybridSN effectively captures more spectral–spatial information while reducing computational complexity. Considering the prevalent issue of class imbalance in experimental datasets (IP, UP, SV) and real-world hyperspectral datasets, we apply the focal loss to mitigate these problems. The focal loss reconstructs the loss function and facilitates effective achievement of the aforementioned goals. We propose a framework (FEHN-FL) that combines FE-HybridSN and the focal loss for HSI classification and then conduct extensive HSI classification experiments using three remote sensing datasets: Indian Pines (IP), University of Pavia (UP), and Salinas Scene (SV). Using cross-entropy loss as a baseline, we assess the hyperspectral classification performance of various backbone networks and examine the influence of different spatial sizes on classification accuracy. After incorporating focal loss as our loss function, we not only compare the classification performance of the FE-HybridSN backbone network under different loss functions but also evaluate their convergence rates during training. This paper presents an automatic recognition system for classifying stones belonging to different Calabrian quarries (Southern Italy). The tool for stone recognition has been developed in the SILPI project (acronym of "Sistema per l'Identificazione di Lapidei Per Immagini"), financed by POR Calabria FESR-FSE 2014-2020. Our study is based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs) that is used in literature for many different tasks such as speech recognition, neural language processing, bioinformatics, image classification and much more. In particular, we propose a two-stage hybrid approach based on the use of a model of Deep Learning (DL), in our case the CNN, in the first stage and a model of Machine Learning (ML) in the second one. In this work, we discuss a possible solution to stones classification which uses a CNN for the feature extraction phase and the Softmax or Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Random Forest (RF) and Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) ML techniques in order to perform the classification phase basing our study on the approach called Transfer Learning (TL). We show the image acquisition process in order to collect adequate information for creating an opportune database of the stone typologies present in the Calabrian quarries, also performing the identification of quarries in the considered region. Recently, attention has been paid to the convolutional neural network (CNN) based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target recognition method. Because of its advantages of automatic feature extraction and the preservation of translation invariance, the recognition accuracies are stronger than traditional methods. However, similar to other deep learning models, CNN is a "black-box" model, whose working process is vague. It is difficult to locate the decision reasons. Because of this, we focus on the process analysis of a pre-trained CNN model. The role of the processing to feature extraction and final recognition decision is discussed. The discussed components of CNN models are convolution, activation function, and full connection. Here, the convolution processing can be deemed as image filtering. The activation function provides a nonlinear element of processing. Moreover, the fully connected layers can also further extract features. In the experiment, four classical CNN models, i.e., AlexNet, VGG16, GoogLeNet, and ResNet-50, are trained by public MSTAR data, which can realize ten-category SAR target recognition. These pre-trained CNN models are processing objects of the proposed process analysis method. After the analysis, the content of the SAR image target features concerned by these pre-trained CNN models is further clarified. In summary, we provide a paradigm to process the analysis of pre-trained CNN models used for SAR target recognition in this paper. Ground Control Points (GCPs) are of great significance for applications involving the registration and fusion of heterologous remote sensing images (RSIs). However, utilizing low-level information rather than deep features, traditional methods based on intensity and local image features turn out to be unsuitable for heterologous RSIs because of the large nonlinear radiation difference (NRD), inconsistent resolutions, and geometric distortions. Additionally, the limitations of current heterologous datasets and existing deep-learning-based methods make it difficult to obtain enough precision GCPs from different kinds of heterologous RSIs, especially for thermal infrared (TIR) images that present low spatial resolution and poor contrast. In this paper, to address the problems above, we propose a convolutional neural network-based (CNN-based) layer-adaptive GCPs extraction method for TIR RSIs. Particularly, the constructed feature extraction network is comprised of basic and layer-adaptive modules. The former is used to achieve the coarse extraction, and the latter is designed to obtain high-accuracy GCPs by adaptively updating the layers in the module to capture the fine communal homogenous features of the heterologous RSIs until the GCP precision meets the preset threshold. Experimental results evaluated on TIR images of SDGSAT-1 TIS and near infrared (NIR), short wave infrared (SWIR), and panchromatic (PAN) images of Landsat-8 OLI show that the matching root-mean-square error (RMSE) of TIS images with SWIR and NIR images could reach 0.8 pixels and an even much higher accuracy of 0.1 pixels could be reached between TIS and PAN images, which performs better than those of the traditional methods, such as SIFT, RIFT, and the CNN-based method like D2-Net. Arrhythmias are defined as irregularities in the heartbeat rhythm, which may infrequently occur in a human's life. These arrhythmias may cause potentially fatal complications, which may lead to an immediate risk of life. Thus, the detection and classification of arrhythmias is a pertinent issue for cardiac diagnosis. (1) Background: To capture these sporadic events, an electrocardiogram (ECG), a register containing the heart's electrical function, is considered the gold standard. However, since ECG carries a vast amount of information, it becomes very complex and challenging to extract the relevant information from visual analysis. As a result, designing an efficient (automated) system to analyse the enormous quantity of data possessed by ECG is critical. (2) Method: This paper proposes a hybrid deep learning-based approach to automate the detection and classification process. This paper makes two-fold contributions. First, 1D ECG signals are translated into 2D Scalogram images to automate the noise filtering and feature extraction. Then, based on experimental evidence, by combining two learning models, namely 2D convolutional neural network (CNN) and the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, a hybrid model called 2D-CNN-LSTM is proposed. (3) Result: To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed 2D-CNN-LSTM approach, we conducted a rigorous experimental study using the widely adopted MIT–BIH arrhythmia database. The obtained results show that the proposed approach provides ≈98.7%, 99%, and 99% accuracy for Cardiac Arrhythmias (ARR), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), and Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR), respectively. Moreover, it provides an average sensitivity of the proposed model of 98.33% and a specificity value of 98.35%, for all three arrhythmias. (4) Conclusions: For the classification of arrhythmias, a robust approach has been introduced where 2 D scalogram images of ECG signals are trained over the CNN-LSTM model. The results obtained are better as compared to the other existing techniques and will greatly reduce the amount of intervention required by doctors. It is considered that 1 in 10 adults worldwide have diabetes. Diabetic foot ulcers are some of the most common complications of diabetes, and they are associated with a high risk of lower-limb amputation and, as a result, reduced life expectancy. Timely detection and periodic ulcer monitoring can considerably decrease amputation rates. Recent research has demonstrated that computer vision can be used to identify foot ulcers and perform non-contact telemetry by using ulcer and tissue area segmentation. However, the applications are limited to controlled lighting conditions, and expert knowledge is required for dataset annotation. This paper reviews the latest publications on the use of artificial intelligence for ulcer area detection and segmentation. The PRISMA methodology was used to search for and select articles, and the selected articles were reviewed to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Qualitative data were used to describe the methodologies used in individual studies, while quantitative data were used for generalization in terms of dataset preparation and feature extraction. Publicly available datasets were accounted for, and methods for preprocessing, augmentation, and feature extraction were evaluated. It was concluded that public datasets can be used to form a bigger, more diverse datasets, and the prospects of wider image preprocessing and the adoption of augmentation require further research. Cloud occlusion phenomena are widespread in optical remote sensing (RS) images, leading to information loss and image degradation and causing difficulties in subsequent applications such as land surface classification, object detection, and land change monitoring. Therefore, thin cloud removal is a key preprocessing procedure for optical RS images, and has great practical value. Recent deep learning-based thin cloud removal methods have achieved excellent results. However, these methods have a common problem in that they cannot obtain large receptive fields while preserving image detail. In this paper, we propose a novel wavelet-integrated convolutional neural network for thin cloud removal (WaveCNN-CR) in RS images that can obtain larger receptive fields without any information loss. WaveCNN-CR generates cloud-free images in an end-to-end manner based on an encoder–decoder-like architecture. In the encoding stage, WaveCNN-CR first extracts multi-scale and multi-frequency components via wavelet transform, then further performs feature extraction for each high-frequency component at different scales by multiple enhanced feature extraction modules (EFEM) separately. In the decoding stage, WaveCNN-CR recursively concatenates the processed low-frequency and high-frequency components at each scale, feeds them into EFEMs for feature extraction, then reconstructs the high-resolution low-frequency component by inverse wavelet transform. In addition, the designed EFEM consisting of an attentive residual block (ARB) and gated residual block (GRB) is used to emphasize the more informative features. ARB and GRB enhance features from the perspective of global and local context, respectively. The spatial distribution of remote-sensing scene images is highly complex in character, so how to extract local key semantic information and discriminative features is the key to making it possible to classify accurately. However, most of the existing convolutional neural network (CNN) models tend to have global feature representations and lose the shallow features. In addition, when the network is too deep, gradient disappearance and overfitting tend to occur. To solve these problems, a lightweight, multi-instance CNN model for remote sensing scene classification is proposed in this paper: MILRDA. In the instance extraction and classifier part, more discriminative features are extracted by the constructed residual dense attention block (RDAB) while retaining shallow features. Then, the extracted features are transformed into instance-level vectors and the local information associated with bag-level labels is highlighted by the proposed channel-attention-based multi-instance pooling, while suppressing the weights of useless objects or backgrounds. Finally, the network is constrained by the cross-entropy loss function to output the final prediction results. The experimental results on four public datasets show that our proposed method can achieve comparable results to other state-of-the-art methods. Efficient jamming recognition capability is a prerequisite for radar anti-jamming and can enhance the survivability of radar in electronic warfare. Traditional recognition methods based on manually designed feature parameters have found it difficult to cope with the increasingly complex electromagnetic environment, and research combining deep learning to achieve jamming recognition is gradually increasing. However, existing research on radar jamming recognition based on deep learning can ignore the global representation in the jamming time–frequency domain data, while not paying enough attention to the problem of lightweighting the recognition network itself. Therefore, this paper proposes a lightweight jamming recognition network (JR-TFViT) that can fuse the global representation of jamming time–frequency domain data while combining the advantages of the Vision Transformer and a convolutional neural network (CNN). The global representation and local information in the jamming time–frequency data are fused with the assistance of the multi-head self-attention (MSA) mechanism in the transformer to improve the feature extraction capabilities of the recognition network. The model's parameters are further decreased by modifying the standard convolutional operation mechanism and substituting the convolutional operation needed by the network with Ghost convolution, which has less parameters. The experimental results show that the JR-TFViT requires fewer model parameters while maintaining higher recognition performance than mainstream convolutional neural networks and lightweight CNNs. For 12 types of radar jamming, the JR-TFViT achieves 99.5% recognition accuracy at JNR = −6 dB with only 3.66 M model parameters. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) play an important role in hyperspectral image (HSI) classification due to their powerful feature extraction ability. Multiscale information is an important means of enhancing the feature representation ability. However, current HSI classification models based on deep learning only use fixed patches as the network input, which may not well reflect the complexity and richness of HSIs. While the existing methods achieve good classification performance for large-scale scenes, the classification of boundary locations and small-scale scenes is still challenging. In addition, dimensional dislocation often exists in the feature fusion process, and the up/downsampling operation for feature alignment may introduce extra noise or result in feature loss. Aiming at the above issues, this paper deeply explores multiscale features, proposes an adaptive attention constraint fusion module for different scale features, and designs a semantic feature enhancement module for high-dimensional features. First, HSI data of two different spatial scales are fed into the model. For the two inputs, we upsample them using bilinear interpolation to obtain their subpixel data. The proposed multiscale feature extraction module is intended to extract the features of the above four parts of the data. For the extracted features, the multiscale attention fusion module is used for feature fusion, and then, the fused features are fed into the high-level feature semantic enhancement module. Finally, based on the fully connected layer and softmax layer, the prediction results of the proposed model are obtained. Featured Application: This deep learning-based method is useful in the computer-aided detection of forgery signatures by using a single known genuine sample. Signature verification is one of the biometric techniques frequently used for personal identification. In many commercial scenarios, such as bank check payment, the signature verification process is based on human examination of a single known sample. Although there is extensive research on automatic signature verification, yet few attempts have been made to perform the verification based on a single reference sample. In this paper, we propose an off-line handwritten signature verification method based on an explainable deep learning method (deep convolutional neural network, DCNN) and unique local feature extraction approach. We use the open-source dataset, Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) 2011 SigComp, to train our system and verify a questioned signature as genuine or a forgery. All samples used in our testing process are collected from a new author whose signatures are not present in the training or other stages. From the experimental results, we get the accuracy between 94.37% and 99.96%, false rejection rate (FRR) between 5.88% and 0%, false acceptance rate (FAR) between 0.22% and 5.34% in our testing dataset. In recent years there has been remarkable progress in one computer vision application area: object detection. One of the most challenging and fundamental problems in object detection is locating a specific object from the multiple objects present in a scene. Earlier traditional detection methods were used for detecting the objects with the introduction of convolutional neural networks. From 2012 onward, deep learning-based techniques were used for feature extraction, and that led to remarkable breakthroughs in this area. This paper shows a detailed survey on recent advancements and achievements in object detection using various deep learning techniques. Several topics have been included, such as Viola–Jones (VJ), histogram of oriented gradient (HOG), one-shot and two-shot detectors, benchmark datasets, evaluation metrics, speed-up techniques, and current state-of-art object detectors. Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that affects millions of people around the world. Neurologists commonly use EEG signals to distinguish schizophrenia patients from normal controls, but their manual analysis is tedious and time-consuming. This has motivated the need for automated methods based on machine learning. However, the methods based on hand-engineered features need human experts to decide which features should be extracted. Though deep learning has recently shown good results for schizophrenia detection, the existing deep models have high parameter complexity, making them prone to overfitting because the available data are limited. To overcome these limitations, we propose a method based on an ensemble-like approach and a lightweight one-dimensional convolutional neural network to discriminate schizophrenia patients from healthy controls. It splits an input EEG signal for analysis into smaller segments, where the same backbone model analyses each segment. In this way, it makes decisions after scanning an EEG signal of any length without increasing the complexity; i.e., it scales well with an EEG signal of any length. The model architecture is simple and involves a small number of parameters, making it easy to implement and train using a limited amount of data. Though the model is lightweight, enough trials are still needed to learn the discriminative features from available data. To tackle this issue, we introduce a simple data augmentation scheme. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 99.88% on a public benchmark dataset; it outperformed the state-of-the-art methods. In hyperspectral image classification (HSIC), every pixel of the HSI is assigned to a land cover category. While convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods for HSIC have significantly enhanced performance, they encounter challenges in learning the relevance of deep semantic features and grappling with escalating computational costs as network depth increases. In contrast, the transformer framework is adept at capturing the relevance of high-level semantic features, presenting an effective solution to address the limitations encountered by CNN-based approaches. This article introduces a novel adaptive learnable spectral–spatial fusion transformer (ALSST) to enhance HSI classification. The model incorporates a dual-branch adaptive spectral–spatial fusion gating mechanism (ASSF), which captures spectral–spatial fusion features effectively from images. The ASSF comprises two key components: the point depthwise attention module (PDWA) for spectral feature extraction and the asymmetric depthwise attention module (ADWA) for spatial feature extraction. The model efficiently obtains spectral–spatial fusion features by multiplying the outputs of these two branches. Furthermore, we integrate the layer scale and DropKey into the traditional transformer encoder and multi-head self-attention (MHSA) to form a new transformer with a layer scale and DropKey (LD-Former). This innovation enhances data dynamics and mitigates performance degradation in deeper encoder layers. The experiments detailed in this article are executed on four renowned datasets: Trento (TR), MUUFL (MU), Augsburg (AU), and the University of Pavia (UP). Object detection is one of the vital and challenging tasks of computer vision. It supports a wide range of applications in real life, such as surveillance, shipping, and medical diagnostics. Object detection techniques aim to detect objects of certain target classes in a given image and assign each object to a corresponding class label. These techniques proceed differently in network architecture, training strategy and optimization function. In this paper, we focus on animal species detection as an initial step to mitigate the negative impacts of wildlife--human and wildlife--vehicle encounters in remote wilderness regions and on highways. Our goal is to provide a summary of object detection techniques based on R-CNN models, and to enhance the performance of detecting animal species in accuracy and speed, by using four different R-CNN models and a deformable convolutional neural network. In recent years, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based spatiotemporal fusion (STF) models for remote sensing images have made significant progress. However, existing STF models may suffer from two main drawbacks. Firstly, multi-band prediction often generates a hybrid feature representation that includes information from all bands. This blending of features can lead to the loss or blurring of high-frequency details, making it challenging to reconstruct multi-spectral remote sensing images with significant spectral differences between bands. Another challenge in many STF models is the limited preservation of spectral information during 2D convolution operations. Combining all input channels' convolution results into a single-channel output feature map can lead to the degradation of spectral dimension information. To address these issues and to strike a balance between avoiding hybrid features and fully utilizing spectral information, we propose a remote sensing image STF model that combines single-band and multi-band prediction (SMSTFM). The SMSTFM initially performs single-band prediction, generating separate predicted images for each band, which are then stacked together to form a preliminary fused image. Subsequently, the multi-band prediction module leverages the spectral dimension information of the input images to further enhance the preliminary predictions. We employ the modern ConvNeXt convolutional module as the primary feature extraction component. During the multi-band prediction phase, we enhance the spatial and channel information captures by replacing the 2D convolutions within ConvNeXt with 3D convolutions. In the experimental section, we evaluate our proposed algorithm on two public datasets with 16x resolution differences and one dataset with a 3x resolution difference. This paper presents a wearable device, fitted on the waist of a participant that recognizes six activities of daily living (walking, walking upstairs, walking downstairs, sitting, standing, and laying) through a deep-learning algorithm, human activity recognition (HAR). The wearable device comprises a single-board computer (SBC) and six-axis sensors. The deep-learning algorithm employs three parallel convolutional neural networks for local feature extraction and for subsequent concatenation to establish feature fusion models of varying kernel size. By using kernels of different sizes, relevant local features of varying lengths were identified, thereby increasing the accuracy of human activity recognition. Regarding experimental data, the database of University of California, Irvine (UCI) and self-recorded data were used separately. The self-recorded data were obtained by having 21 participants wear the device on their waist and perform six common activities in the laboratory. These data were used to verify the proposed deep-learning algorithm on the performance of the wearable device. The accuracy of these six activities in the UCI dataset and in the self-recorded data were 97.49% and 96.27%, respectively. The accuracies in tenfold cross-validation were 99.56% and 97.46%, respectively. The experimental results have successfully verified the proposed convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, which can be used in rehabilitation assessment for people unable to exercise vigorously. This paper presents an event identification process in complementary feature extractions via convolutional neural network (CNN)-based event classification. The CNN is a suitable deep learning technique for addressing the two-dimensional power system data as it directly derives information from a measurement signal database instead of modeling transient phenomena, where the measured synchrophasor data in the power systems are allocated by time and space domains. The dynamic signatures in phasor measurement unit (PMU) signals are analyzed based on the starting point of the subtransient signals, as well as the fluctuation signature in the transient signal. For fast decision and protective operations, the use of narrow band time window is recommended to reduce the acquisition delay, where a wide time window provides high accuracy due to the use of large amounts of data. In this study, two separate data preprocessing methods and multichannel CNN structures are constructed to provide validation, as well as the fast decision in successive event conditions. The decision result includes information pertaining to various event types and locations based on various time delays for the protective operation. Deep learning plays a highly essential role in the domain of remote sensing change detection (CD) due to its high efficiency. From some existing methods, we can observe that the fusion of information at each scale is quite vital for the accuracy of the CD results, especially for the common problems of pseudo-change and the difficult detection of change edges in the CD task. With this in mind, we propose a New Fusion network with Dual-branch Encoder and Triple-branch Decoder (DETDNet) that follows a codec structure as a whole, where the encoder adopts a siamese Res2Net-50 structure to extract the local features of the bitemporal images. As for the decoder in previous works, they usually employed a single branch, and this approach only preserved the fusion features of the encoder's bitemporal images. Distinguished from these approaches, we adopt the triple-branch architecture in the decoder for the first time. The triple-branch structure preserves not only the dual-branch features from the encoder in the left and right branches, respectively, to learn the effective and powerful individual features of each temporal image but also the fusion features from the encoder in the middle branch. The middle branch utilizes triple-branch aggregation (TA) to realize the feature interaction of the three branches in the decoder, which enhances the integrated features and provides abundant and supplementary bitemporal feature information to improve the CD performance. The triple-branch architecture of the decoder ensures that the respective features of the bitemporal images as well as their fused features are preserved, making the feature extraction more integrated. In addition, the three branches employ a multiscale feature extraction module (MFE) per layer to extract multiscale contextual information and enhance the feature representation capability of the CD. We conducted comparison experiments on the BCDD, LEVIR-CD, and SYSU-CD datasets, which were created in New Zealand, the USA, and Hong Kong, respectively. The data were preprocessed to contain 7434, 10,192, and 20,000 image pairs, respectively. The experimental results show that DETDNet achieves F1 scores of 92.7%, 90.99%, and 81.13%, respectively, which shows better results compared to some recent works, which means that the model is more robust. In addition, the lower FP and FN indicate lower error and misdetection rates. Moreover, from the analysis of the experimental results, compared with some existing methods, the problem of pseudo-changes and the difficulty of detecting small change areas is better solved. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great potential in the field of brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) due to their ability to directly process raw electroencephalogram (EEG) signals without artificial feature extraction. Some CNNs have achieved better classification accuracy than that of traditional methods. Raw EEG signals are usually represented as a two-dimensional (2-D) matrix composed of channels and time points, ignoring the spatial topological information of electrodes. Our goal is to make a CNN that takes raw EEG signals as inputs have the ability to learn spatial topological features and improve its classification performance while basically maintaining its original structure. We propose an EEG topographic representation module (TRM). This module consists of (1) a mapping block from raw EEG signals to a 3-D topographic map and (2) a convolution block from the topographic map to an output with the same size as the input. According to the size of the convolutional kernel used in the convolution block, we design two types of TRMs, namely TRM-(5,5) and TRM-(3,3). We embed the two TRM types into three widely used CNNs (ShallowConvNet, DeepConvNet and EEGNet) and test them on two publicly available datasets (the Emergency Braking During Simulated Driving Dataset (EBDSDD) and the High Gamma Dataset (HGD)). Results show that the classification accuracies of all three CNNs are improved on both datasets after using the TRMs. With TRM-(5,5), the average classification accuracies of DeepConvNet, EEGNet and ShallowConvNet are improved by 6.54%, 1.72% and 2.07% on the EBDSDD and by 6.05%, 3.02% and 5.14% on the HGD, respectively; with TRM-(3,3), they are improved by 7.76%, 1.71% and 2.17% on the EBDSDD and by 7.61%, 5.06% and 6.28% on the HGD, respectively. We improve the classification performance of three CNNs on both datasets through the use of TRMs, indicating that they have the capability to mine spatial topological EEG information. Human activity recognition (HAR) is a classification task that involves predicting the movement of a person based on sensor data. As we can see, there has been a huge growth and development of smartphones over the last 10–15 years—they could be used as a medium of mobile sensing to recognize human activity. Nowadays, deep learning methods are in a great demand and we could use those methods to recognize human activity. A great way is to build a convolutional neural network (CNN). HAR using Smartphone dataset has been widely used by researchers to develop machine learning models to recognize human activity. The dataset has two parts: training and testing. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach to analyze and recognize human activity on the same dataset using deep learning method on cloud-based platform. We have applied principal component analysis on the dataset to get the most important features. Next, we have executed the experiment for all the features as well as the top 48, 92, 138, and 164 features. We have run all the experiments on Google Colab. In the experiment, for the evaluation of our proposed methodology, datasets are split into two different ratios such as 70–10–20% and 80–10–10% for training, validation, and testing, respectively. We have set the performance of CNN (70% training–10% validation–20% testing) with 48 features as a benchmark for our work. In this work, we have achieved maximum accuracy of 98.70% with CNN. On the other hand, we have obtained 96.36% accuracy with the top 92 features of the dataset. We can see from the experimental results that if we could select the features properly then not only could the accuracy be improved but also the training and testing time of the model. Deep learning models are widely employed in hyperspectral image processing to integrate both spatial features and spectral features, but the correlations between them are rarely taken into consideration. However, in hyperspectral mineral identification, not only the spectral and spatial features of minerals need to be considered, but also the correlations between them are crucial to further promote identification accuracy. In this paper, we propose hierarchical spatial-spectral feature extraction with long short term memory (HSS-LSTM) to explore correlations between spatial features and spectral features and obtain hierarchical intrinsic features for mineral identification. In the proposed model, the fusion spatial-spectral feature is primarily extracted by stacking local spatial features obtained by a convolution neural network (CNN)-based model and spectral information together. To better exploit spatial features and spectral features, an LSTM-based model is proposed to capture correlations and obtain hierarchical features for accurate mineral identification. Specifically, the proposed model shares a uniform objective function, so that all the parameters in the network can be optimized in the meantime. Experimental results on the hyperspectral data collected by the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) in the Nevada mining area show that HSS-LSTM achieves an overall accuracy of 94.70% and outperforms other commonly used identification methods. Medicinal plants have always been studied and considered due to their high importance for preserving human health. However, identifying medicinal plants is very time-consuming, tedious and requires an experienced specialist. Hence, a vision-based system can support researchers and ordinary people in recognising herb plants quickly and accurately. Thus, this study proposes an intelligent vision-based system to identify herb plants by developing an automatic Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The proposed Deep Learning (DL) model consists of a CNN block for feature extraction and a classifier block for classifying the extracted features. The classifier block includes a Global Average Pooling (GAP) layer, a dense layer, a dropout layer, and a softmax layer. The solution has been tested on 3 levels of definitions (64 × 64, 128 × 128 and 256 × 256 pixel) of images for leaf recognition of five different medicinal plants. As a result, the vision-based system achieved more than 99.3% accuracy for all the image definitions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a signal commonly used for detecting brain activity and diagnosing sleep disorders. Manual sleep stage scoring is a time-consuming task, and extracting information from the EEG signal is difficult because of the non-linear dependencies of time series. To solve the aforementioned problems, in this study, a deep learning model of sleep EEG signal was developed using bidirectional recurrent neural network (BiRNN) encoding and decoding. First, the input signal was denoised using the wavelet threshold method. Next, feature extraction in the time and frequency domains was realized using a convolutional neural network to expand the scope of feature extraction and preserve the original EEG feature information to the maximum extent possible. Finally, the time-series information was mined using the encoding–decoding module of the BiRNN, and the automatic discrimination of the sleep staging of the EEG signal was realized using the SoftMax function. The model was cross-validated using Fpz-Cz single-channel EEG signals from the Sleep-EDF dataset for 19 nights, and the results demonstrated that the proposed model can achieve a high recognition rate and stability. A brain tumor is a distorted tissue wherein cells replicate rapidly and indefinitely, with no control over tumor growth. Deep learning has been argued to have the potential to overcome the challenges associated with detecting and intervening in brain tumors. It is well established that the segmentation method can be used to remove abnormal tumor regions from the brain, as this is one of the advanced technological classification and detection tools. In the case of brain tumors, early disease detection can be achieved effectively using reliable advanced A.I. and Neural Network classification algorithms. This study aimed to critically analyze the proposed literature solutions, use the Visual Geometry Group (VGG 16) for discovering brain tumors, implement a convolutional neural network (CNN) model framework, and set parameters to train the model for this challenge. VGG is used as one of the highest-performing CNN models because of its simplicity. Furthermore, the study developed an effective approach to detect brain tumors using MRI to aid in making quick, efficient, and precise decisions. Faster CNN used the VGG 16 architecture as a primary network to generate convolutional feature maps, then classified these to yield tumor region suggestions. The prediction accuracy was used to assess performance. Our suggested methodology was evaluated on a dataset for brain tumor diagnosis using MR images comprising 253 MRI brain images, with 155 showing tumors. Our approach could identify brain tumors in MR images. In the testing data, the algorithm outperformed the current conventional approaches for detecting brain tumors (Precision = 96%, 98.15%, 98.41% and F1-score = 91.78%, 92.6% and 91.29% respectively) and achieved an excellent accuracy of CNN 96%, VGG 16 98.5% and Ensemble Model 98.14%. With the increasing development of published literature, classification methods based on bibliometric information and traditional machine learning approaches encounter performance challenges related to overly coarse classifications and low accuracy. This study presents a deep learning approach for scientometric analysis and classification of scientific literature based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). Three dimensions, namely publication features, author features, and content features, were divided into explicit and implicit features to form a set of scientometric terms through explicit feature extraction and implicit feature mapping. The weighted scientometric term vectors are fitted into a CNN model to achieve dual-label classification of literature based on research content and methods. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated using an application example from the data science and analytics literature. The empirical results show that the scientometric classification model proposed in this study performs better than comparable machine learning classification methods in terms of precision, recognition, and F1-score. It also exhibits higher accuracy than deep learning classification based solely on explicit and dominant features. Human facial emotion recognition (FER) has attracted the attention of the research community for its promising applications. Mapping different facial expressions to the respective emotional states are the main task in FER. The classical FER consists of two major steps: feature extraction and emotion recognition. Currently, the Deep Neural Networks, especially the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), is widely used in FER by virtue of its inherent feature extraction mechanism from images. Several works have been reported on CNN with only a few layers to resolve FER problems. However, standard shallow CNNs with straightforward learning schemes have limited feature extraction capability to capture emotion information from high-resolution images. A notable drawback of the most existing methods is that they consider only the frontal images (i.e., ignore profile views for convenience), although the profile views taken from different angles are important for a practical FER system. For developing a highly accurate FER system, this study proposes a very Deep CNN (DCNN) modeling through Transfer Learning (TL) technique where a pre-trained DCNN model is adopted by replacing its dense upper layer(s) compatible with FER, and the model is fine-tuned with facial emotion data. A novel pipeline strategy is introduced, where the training of the dense layer(s) is followed by tuning each of the pre-trained DCNN blocks successively that has led to gradual improvement of the accuracy of FER to a higher level. The proposed FER system is verified on eight different pre-trained DCNN models (VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-18, ResNet-34, ResNet-50, ResNet-152, Inception-v3 and DenseNet-161) and well-known KDEF and JAFFE facial image datasets. FER is very challenging even for frontal views alone. FER on the KDEF dataset poses further challenges due to the diversity of images with different profile views together with frontal views. The proposed method achieved remarkable accuracy on both datasets with pre-trained models. On a 10-fold cross-validation way, the best achieved FER accuracies with DenseNet-161 on test sets of KDEF and JAFFE are 96.51% and 99.52%, respectively. The evaluation results reveal the superiority of the proposed FER system over the existing ones regarding emotion detection accuracy. Distance information of an obstacle is important for obstacle avoidance in many applications, and could be used to determine the potential risk of object collision. In this study, the detection of a moving fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with deep learning-based distance estimation to conduct a feasibility study of sense and avoid (SAA) and mid-air collision avoidance of UAVs is proposed by using a monocular camera to detect and track an incoming UAV. A quadrotor is regarded as an owned UAV, and it is able to estimate the distance of an incoming fixed-wing intruder. The adopted object detection method is based on the you only look once (YOLO) object detector. Deep neural network (DNN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) methods are applied to exam their performance in the distance estimation of moving objects. The feature extraction of fixed-wing UAVs is based on the VGG-16 model, and then its result is applied to the distance network to estimate the object distance. The proposed model is trained by using synthetic images from animation software and validated by using both synthetic and real flight videos. Scene classification relying on images is essential in many systems and applications related to remote sensing. The scientific interest in scene classification from remotely collected images is increasing, and many datasets and algorithms are being developed. The introduction of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and other deep learning techniques contributed to vast improvements in the accuracy of image scene classification in such systems. To classify the scene from areal images, we used a two-stream deep architecture. We performed the first part of the classification, the feature extraction, using pre-trained CNN that extracts deep features of aerial images from different network layers: the average pooling layer or some of the previous convolutional layers. Next, we applied feature concatenation on extracted features from various neural networks, after dimensionality reduction was performed on enormous feature vectors. We experimented extensively with different CNN architectures, to get optimal results. Finally, we used the Support Vector Machine (SVM) for the classification of the concatenated features. The competitiveness of the examined technique was evaluated on two real-world datasets: UC Merced and WHU-RS.
