In the traditional control scheme of a 12/8-pole bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM), radial force and torque are usually controlled as a compromise due to the conflict between their effective output areas. Additionally, each phase requires individual power circuits and is excited in turn to produce a continuous levitation force, resulting in high power device requirements and high controller costs. This paper discusses a 12/8-pole single-winding hybrid-rotor bearingless switched reluctance motor (HBSRM) with a hybrid rotor consisting of cylindrical and salient-pole lamination segments. The asymmetric rotor of the HBSRM slightly increases the complexity of its structure and magnetic circuit, but makes it possible to generate the desired radial force at any rotor angular position. A control scheme for the HBSRM is developed to utilize the independent excitation of the four windings in one phase to generate the desired levitation force at any rotor angular position, and it requires only half the number of power circuits used in the conventional control scheme of a 12/8-pole single-winding BSRM. Different from the average torque chosen to be controlled in traditional methods, this scheme directly regulates the instantaneous total torque produced by all excited phases together and presents a current algorithm to optimize the torque contribution of each phase so as to reduce torque pulsation, and the improved performance of this bearingless motor is finally validated by simulation analysis. Today, switched reluctance motors (SRMs) represent a promising technology for the long-term sustainability of electrified transportation, mainly due to their simpler structure, lower production cost, and robust configuration compared to other motor technologies. Notwithstanding, high acoustic noise and torque ripple are two performance imperfections that have prevented the widespread implementation of SRMs. This paper presents different structural design techniques to reduce the acoustic noise of an 8/6 SRM, while maintaining the electromagnetic performance of the machine. For each technique, a corresponding multiphysics FEA analysis of the motor's performance is presented. The accuracy of the multiphysics model is confirmed experimentally using acoustic noise measurements obtained from a four-phase 8/6 SRM. Then, several structural techniques have been investigated on the 8/6 SRM represented in two main categories: stator-housing modifications and rotor modifications. With the rapid development of power electronic techniques and the increasing cost of permanent magnets (PMs) materials, switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have recently gained more attention. However, traditional SRMs have a relatively low torque density. For the sake of increasing the motor torque density, this paper proposes a novel segmental rotor type SRM. The proposed motor adopts hybrid stator poles and concentrated windings in the stator side and a segmental rotor structure in the rotor side, which is completely different from the structures of the traditional SRM. The special structure of the motor shortens the magnetic flux paths of the motor, separates the parts of the magnetic flux paths from one another, and eradicates the magnetic flux reversal in the motor stator in order to improve the electric utilization and output torque density of the motor. Meanwhile, the requirement of the magneto-motive force and the core loss of the motor is also decreased, thereby improving the efficiency of the motor. For the purpose of proving the proposed structure, the characteristics of the motor are analyzed using the finite element method and are compared to those of the traditional 12/8 SRM, which is designed for the same application. Moreover, the prototypes of the traditional 12/8 and proposed SRMs are manufactured, and experiments based on the prototypes are performed. Due to their advantages, switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are interesting solutions for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion. However, they have the main drawback of high torque ripple. This paper develops a universal torque control (UTC) technique for SRM that can fulfill all vehicle requirements under a wide range of speeds. The developed UTC involves two different control techniques. It utilizes the direct instantaneous torque control (DITC) strategy in a low speed region, and the average torque control (ATC) strategy in high speeds. The selection of DITC and ATC is made based on their performance regarding torque ripple, torque/current ratio, and efficiency. Moreover, a novel transition control between the two control techniques is introduced. The results show the ability of the proposed UTC to achieve vehicle requirements while obtaining all the benefits of torque control over the possible range of speeds. The proposed UTC provides the best performance regarding minimum torque ripple, maximum torque/current ratio, and maximum efficiency over the whole speed range. The transition control achieves a smooth operation without any disturbances. In this paper, a thorough framework for multiobjective design optimization of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is proposed. Selection of stator and rotor pole embrace coefficients is an essential step in the SRM design process since it influences torque output and torque ripple in SRM. The problem of determining optimal pole embrace is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem with the objective of optimizing average torque, efficiency and torque ripple, and response surface models were obtained based on the genetic aggregation method. The results obtained by genetic aggregation response surface (GARS) and the non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) were validated with the finite element method (FEM) model of the initial SRM. The optimized model displayed better efficiency profile over a wide speed range. The initial and optimized models recorded maximum efficiencies of 85% and 94.05%, respectively, at 2000 rpm. The efficiency values of 93.97–94.05% were achieved for the three pareto optimal candidates. The findings indicate the viability of the suggested strategy and support the use of GARS and NSGA-II as useful methods for addressing SRM key challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the speed control strategy of a switched reluctance motor based on angle-position control (APC). The switched reluctance motor has three control parameters: turn-on angle, turn-off angle and voltage PWM duty cycle. This paper studies the function of the three parameters and designs the control algorithms of the parameters, respectively, which can reduce the coupling degree, simplify the control process, and realize the optimal control of the switched reluctance motor. By studying the nonlinear characteristics of the switched reluctance motor, the optimal current waveform in the effective working range of the inductor is obtained, and then a control strategy of the turn-on angle is designed to realize the ideal winding current waveform. According to the torque characteristics of the motor, taking the coincidence of the freewheeling zero point and the position angle at the end of the maximum inductance interval as the control target, a control strategy for the turn-off angle that makes full use of the effective inductance working interval is proposed, which improves the efficiency of the system. For the nonlinear and time-variant switched reluctance motor running process, a data-driven model-free adaptive control algorithm is introduced, and a switched reluctance motor speed control algorithm based on voltage PWM duty cycle is designed. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a control strategy that is generally applicable to switched reluctance motors, which does not depend on the precise mathematical model of the motor. The control algorithms are designed separately for the three control parameters according to the characteristics of the motor, which reduces the degree of coupling among them. Deflection switched reluctance motors (DSRM) are prone to chattering at low speeds, which always affects the output efficiency of the DSRM and the mechanical loss of the motor. Combining the characteristics of a traditional reluctance motor with the strong nonlinear and high coupling of the DSRM, a control system for a DSRM based on a flexible neural network (FNN) is proposed in this paper. Based on the better robustness and fault tolerance of fuzzy PI control, the given speed signal is adjusted and converted into a torque control signal. As a result, the FNN control module possesses the strong self-learning ability and adaptive adjustment ability necessary to obtain the control voltage signal. This paper addresses the issue of estimating current waveforms in a switched reluctance motor required to achieve a desired electromagnetic torque. The methodology employed exploits the recently-developed method based on the transformation from the time to the position domain. This transformation takes account of nonlinearities caused by a doubly-salient structure. Owing to this new modelling technique it is possible to solve optimization problems with reference torque, constrained voltage, and parameter sensitivity accounted for. The aim of this work was to develop a parameterized analytical and FEM (Finite Element Method) model of a switched reluctance motor. The developed analytical model was used to assess the performance of these types of motors, and is determined to be a tool for comparing and evaluating switched reluctance motors of various designs. The aim of the work was also the systematization of knowledge related to the operation, structure and methods of determining the static electromagnetic torque generated by switched reluctance motors. The FEM model (ANSYS) was, also, made in order to verify physical phenomena occurring during operation of these motors. Four laboratory tests were executed as part of the work prototypes of switched reluctance motors built at Warsaw University of Technology. A parameterized analytical model was developed and implemented in MATLAB. The model operation tests were conducted and as a result, the characteristics describing the dependence of the electromagnetic torque as a function of the current and the position of the rotor were obtained. The model was validated by confronting the analytical calculations supported by FEM simulation results with the measurement results. This paper presents a description and the results of simulations and laboratory tests of proposed methods for dependent torque control in a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM). The proposed methods are based on Dependent Torque Motor Control (Rising Slope), DTMC(RC), and Dependent Torque Motor Control (Falling Slope), DTMC(FC). The results of these studies were compared with those on the Classical Torque Motor Control (CTMC) method. Studies were conducted for each of the analyzed control methods by determining the efficiency of the drive and the RMS of the source current and analyzing the vibrations generated for each of the control methods. The harmonics of the phase currents, which caused an increase in the level of vibrations generated, were determined. The usefulness of the proposed methods for controlling SRMs was assessed based on simulations and experiments. Additionally, the natural frequencies of the stator of the tested SRM were determined by a simulation using the Ansys Maxwell suite. Currently, one of the most used motor types for high-speed applications is the permanent-magnet synchronous motor. However, this type of machine has high costs and rare earth elements are needed for its production. For these reasons, permanent-magnet-free alternatives are being sought. An overview of high-speed electrical machines has shown that the switched reluctance motor is a possible alternative. This paper deals with design and optimization of this motor, which should achieve the same output power as the existing high-speed permanent-magnet synchronous motor while maintaining the same motor volume. The paper presents the initial design of the motor and the procedure for analyses performed using analytical and finite element methods. During the electromagnetic analysis, the influence of motor geometric parameters on parameters such as: maximum current, average torque, torque ripple, output power, and losses was analyzed. The analysis of windage losses was performed by analytical calculation. Based on the results, it was necessary to create a cylindrical rotor shape. The rotor modification method was chosen based on mechanical analysis. Using thermal analysis, the design was modified to meet thermal limits. This paper presents a detailed literature review on switched reluctance motor (SRM) and drive systems in electric vehicle (EV) powertrains. SRMs have received increasing attention for EV applications owing to their reliable structure, fault tolerance ability and magnet free design. The main drawbacks of the SRM are torque ripple, low power density, low power factor and small extended speed range. Recent research shows that multi-stack conventional switched reluctance motors (MSCSRM) and multi-stack switched reluctance motors with a segmental rotor (MSSRM-SR) are promising alternative solutions to reduce torque ripples, increase torque density and increase power factor. Different winding configurations such as single-layer concentrated winding (SLC), single layer mutually coupled winding (SLMC), double layer concentrated winding (DLC), double layer mutually coupled winding (DLMC) and fully-pitched winding (FP) are introduced in the literature in recent years to increase average torque and to decrease torque ripples. This research analyzes winding methods and structure of the SRMs, including conventional and segmental rotors. They have been compared and assessed in detail evaluation of torque ripple reduction, torque/power density increase, noise/vibration characteristics and mechanical structure. In addition, various drive systems are fully addressed for the SRMs, including conventional drives, soft-switching drives, drives with standard inverters and drives with an integrated battery charger. In this paper, the SRM control methods are also reviewed and classified. These control methods include strategies of torque ripple reduction, fault-diagnosis, fault-tolerance techniques and sensorless control. The key contributions of this paper provide a useful basis for detailed analysis of modeling and electromechanical design, drive systems, and control techniques of the SRMs for EV applications. This paper presents a proposal for a new type of regulator for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. The proposed regulator enables a significant extension of the rotational speed range and drive output power. This regulator is characterized by a complex structure, including two regulation modules: voltage and phase supply switch-on angle. The voltage module includes a proportional integral derivative (PID) voltage regulator. During its operation, the value of the phase supply switch-on angle and the width of the phase supply range are determined as a result of interpolation of the data previously determined in the simulation program. The other module contains the PID controller of the phase supply switch-on angle. The values of the angles included in the tables have been determined so as to ensure that the drive works with the greatest possible efficiency. The control method is determined based on the current operating parameters of the drive, i.e., torque and speed. The operation of the regulator was simulated in the MATLAB Simulink program. The regulator presented here was implemented in a field programmable gate array (FPGA). Due to the expected increase in the electric vehicles (EVs) sales and hence the increase of the price of rare-earth permanent magnets, the switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are gaining increasing research interest currently and in the future. The SRMs offer numerous advantages regarding their structure and converter topologies. However, they suffer from the high torque ripple and complex control algorithms. This paper presents an improved direct instantaneous torque control (DITC) strategy of SRMs for EVs. The improved DITC can fulfill the vehicle requirements. It involves a simple online torque estimator and a torque error compensator. The turn-on angle is defined analytically to achieve wide speed operation and maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) production. Moreover, the turn-off angles are optimized for minimum torque ripples and the highest efficiency. In addition, this paper provides a detailed comparison between the proposed DITC and the most applicable torque control techniques of SRMs for EVs, including indirect instantaneous torque control (IITC), using torque sharing function (TSF) strategy and average torque control (ATC). The results show the superior performance of the proposed DITC because it has the lowest torque ripples, the highest torque tor current ratio, and the best efficiency over the low and medium speed ranges. Moreover, the comparison shows the advantages of each control technique over the range of speed control. The paper deals with nonlinear simulation models of a drive consisting of the four-phase 8/6 doubly salient switched reluctance motor (SRM), the four-phase dissymmetric bridge power converter and the closed-cycle rotor speed control strategy carried out by the pulse width modulation (PWM) with variable angle and combined control scheme with the PI algorithm. All presented considerations are based on a MATLAB-SIMULINK platform. The nonlinear mathematical model of the analyzed SRM drive was obtained as a combination of the two dimensional (2D) finite element model (FEM) of the motor and the nonlinear model of the electrical network of the power supply circuit. The main model and its seven sub-modules, such as the controller module, one phase simulation module, rotor position angle transformation module, power system module, phase current operation module, "subsystem" module, and electromagnetic torque of one phase operation module, are described. MATLAB functions store the magnetization curves data of the motor obtained by the 2D FEM electromagnetic field calculations, as well as the data of magnetic co-energy curves of the motor calculated from the magnetization curves. The 2D specimen insert method is adopted in MATLAB functions for operating the flux linkage and the magnetic co-energy at the given phase current and rotor position. The phase current waveforms obtained during simulations match with the tested experimentally phases current waveforms at the same rotor speed and the same load basically. The simulated rotor speed curves also agree with the experimental rotor speed curves. This means that the method of suggested nonlinear simulation models of the analyzed SRM drive is correct, and the model is accurate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have been receiving great attention in electric vehicle (EV) applications. However, the complicated control and inherent torque ripples are the major drawbacks of SRMs. This paper introduces a numerical estimation method for the optimum control parameters of SRM based on a simplified average torque control (ATC) strategy for EVs. The proposed control aims to simplify the control algorithm to cut down complexity and cost. Besides, it aims to achieve all the vehicle requirements. A multi-objective optimization problem is set to determine the most efficient excitation parameters that can fulfill the vehicle requirements. The objective function has two terms: torque ripple and efficiency. Proper constraints for both turn-on and turn-off angles are included in order to achieve high-performance control, maximum torque per Ampere (MTPA) production, and reliable operation. Besides, additional toque constraints are involved to ensure fast dynamics, high-performance torque tracking capability, and parameter insensitivity. The motor model is accurately achieved based on the experimentally measured torque and flux characteristics. Several simulations are executed to prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control. Moreover, experimental results are obtained to validate the theoretical findings. It is observed that the proposed control has a significant reduction of torque ripples compared to the conventional control methods. The average reduction ratio of torque ripple over the speed range is about 72.43%. Besides, the proposed control succeeds in maintaining a very good efficiency and high torque/current ratio. To investigate the influence of control and structure parameters on the starting performance of a switched reluctance motor, a 12/8 pole switched reluctance motor is analyzed in this paper. The novel field-circuit coupled finite element method of switched reluctance motor is proposed in the paper. The influence of the controller on the switched reluctance motor is considered. The influence of rotor initial position angle, starting mode, starting current, and structure parameters on the starting performance of the switched reluctance motor is studied using the field-circuit coupled finite element method. The starting performance of the switched reluctance motor is obtained under the different control and structure parameters. The alternating starting mode of single- and two-phase winding can improve the starting torque of switched reluctance motor (SRM). As the stator pole arc coefficient increases, the starting torque of SRM increases. The appropriate reduction of the air gap length can improve the starting torque of SRM. Experimental results of the prototype are compared with the calculation results, which verifies the reliability of the calculation method and accuracy of the calculation results. A DC-distributed power system consists of a large quantity of subsystems with power converters. The interaction among these subsystems will affect the operation performance of the whole system. Therefore, data communication plays a very important role in system control and equipment monitoring. The present study proposes a dual modulation method of power/signal based on Switched Reluctance Drive (SRD), which can transmit signals simultaneously with power conversion and can promise data communication of the system with lower cost. This proposed method uses the ripple inherent as the carrier of the signal in the power circuit and adopts Pulse width modulation (PWM)/frequency shift keying (FSK) composite modulation to realize the reverse transmission of signals from the load to the power supply. In this paper, a comparison of the simple firing angle modulation method (FAM) and the more advanced torque sharing function (TSF)-based control of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented. The off-line procedure to tailor and optimize the parameters of chosen methods for off-the-shelf SRM is explained. Objective functions for optimization are motor efficiency, torque ripple, and integral square error. The off-line optimization uses a finite element method (FEM) model of the SRM. The model was verified by measurement on the SRM. Simulation results showed that FAM has comparable efficiency to TSF, but has a much higher value of torque ripple. The high current ripple and torque ripple are the main drawbacks of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) since the nonlinearity and double saliency, which limits its applications. In order to eliminate the current variation and torque ripple, an optimized pulse width modulation (PWM) control is presented in this paper. The voltage ratio duty is able to be predicted precisely according to the information of the motor running parameter. Based on torque sharing functions (TSFs), the current profile is pre-computed and four regions are defined according to the reference current profiles. The three modes, excitation, demagnetization and freewheeling, are flexibly chosen according to the characteristic of the current profile. It is indicated that it is better than that of conventional PWM modulation in terms of current ripple and the current tracing performance is improved without increasing the switching frequency or changing the hysteresis band. The current ripple is defined as the peak-to-peak value dividing the average value and it is reduced by 40%. A comparison in terms of the torque ripple and copper loss is also carried out: the torque ripple is significantly reduced via the proposed scheme under both magnetic linear and saturation conditions. The torque ripple and copper loss are reduced by about 70% and 12%, respectively. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by simulation and experimental results.
