Indoor microclimate conditions and air pollutant concentrations (O3, TVOC, CO, CO2, and particulate matter mass concentrations in six size bins) were measured in the Greek Archaeological Museum of Abdera, which houses priceless works of art from the birthplace of the ancient philosopher Democritus. The monitoring campaign took place during the spring and summer months, when there were the greatest number of visitors. In the exhibition rooms, daily variations in relative humidity ranged from 4% to 10%, and daily variations in air temperature ranged from 0.9 °C to 2.6 °C. These uncontrolled changes may endanger the housed antiquities. The microclimate in the storage rooms varied substantially less than in the exhibition halls due to dehumidifiers and the lack of visitors. Concerning air pollution, indoor O3 concentrations were higher than the recommended limit values for the conservation of artwork. Even more worrisome are particulate matter mass concentrations above the air quality guidelines. Despite the fact that the building is well insulated and that only artificial lighting is used in the exhibition halls, it is difficult to achieve adequate conditions for the protection of the works of art. Hawaii is known for its diverse micro-climates, making the evaluation of varieties at different locations an important strategy to determine the best varieties for each climate zone. Demand for dry beans in Hawaii has been rising due to the increase in production of value-added goods made from legumes. Initial field trials in 2017 were conducted to determine the best sowing date for dry beans in Hawaii since there were no previous such determinations. Field trials were conducted between 2018 and 2021 to evaluate 24 varieties of chickpea (Cicer arietinum), 21 varieties of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), and 10 varieties of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) for their suitability and yield variability under Hawaii's micro-climates. Preliminary sowing date trials were conducted in 2017, and a variety of trials were conducted between 2018 and 2021; seven field trials were conducted, including two in each of Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii County, and one in Kauai County. The trials were conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. For all the study sites, 20-20-20 NPK fertilizer was applied at 30, 13, and 25 kg/ha N-P-K, respectively. A drip irrigation system was used in all locations as supplemental irrigation. Irrigation was used when needed and turned off 2 weeks prior to harvest. The results showed highly significant (p < 0.01) differences in yield between the varieties of each legume crop. Highly significant (p < 0.01) differences in yield were also found between the study locations. There was a significant (p < 0.05) decline in yield by 28% and 45% in chickpea and by 32% and 43% in common bean when planted 1 and 2 months, respectively, after the optimal mid-February planting on Oahu and Maui County. A decline of 21% and 50% in chickpea and 30 and 48% in common bean was recorded when planted 1 and 2 months, respectively, after the optimal mid-March planting in Hawaii County. The study results lead to developing site-specific recommendations for varieties and planting dates from each of the legume crops for each county. The rapid and accurate detection of forest disturbances in temperate forests has become increasingly crucial as policy demands and climate pressure on these forests rise. The cloud-penetrating Sentinel-1 radar constellation provides frequent and high-resolution observations with global coverage, but few studies have assessed its potential for mapping disturbances in temperate forests. This study investigated the sensitivity of temporally dense C-band backscatter data from Sentinel-1 to varying management-related disturbance intensities in temperate forests, and the influence of confounding factors such as radar backscatter signal seasonality, shadow, and layover on the radar backscatter signal at a pixel level. A unique network of 14 experimental sites in the Netherlands was used in which trees were removed to simulate different levels of management-related forest disturbances across a range of representative temperate forest species. Results from six years (2016–2022) of Sentinel-1 observations indicated that backscatter seasonality is dependent on species phenology and degree of canopy cover. The backscatter change magnitude was sensitive to medium- and high-severity disturbances, with radar layover having a stronger impact on the backscatter disturbance signal than radar shadow. Combining ascending and descending orbits and complementing polarizations compared to a single orbit or polarization was found to result in a 34% mean increase in disturbance detection sensitivity across all disturbance severities. This study underlines the importance of linking high-quality experimental ground-based data to dense satellite time series to improve future forest disturbance mapping. It suggests a key role for C-band backscatter time series in the rapid and accurate large-area monitoring of temperate forests and, in particular, the disturbances imposed by logging practices or tree mortality driven by climate change factors. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of climate and technology on forest efficiency (FE) in China's provinces from 2002 to 2020. First, the study used SBM-data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) to estimate Chinese provinces' FE using multidimensional forest inputs and outputs. The climate influence is assessed using temperature, precipitation, sunlight hours, and carbon dioxide levels in the second phase. A climate index was created using principal component analysis (PCA) for a complete estimation. In addition to prior research, we analyze the technology impact through two technological indicators: (i) research and development, and (ii) investment in forests. Furthermore, we explore the non-linear influence of economic development on both FE and climate quality. The regression study by CupFM and CupBC found that temperature and precipitation increase FE, whereas sunlight hours and carbon emissions decrease it. The positive association observed between Climate Index1, and the negative relationship noted for Climate Index2, suggests that forests positively influence climate conditions, signifying that an improvement in FE leads to an improvement in climate quality. Technology boosts forest productivity and climatic quality. The environmental Kuznets curve shows an inverted U-shape relationship between economic development and FE. Similarly, climate and economic development have an inverted U-shaped EKC relationship. Urbanization reduces FE due to human growth and activity. Central Europe is not a typical wildfire region; however, an increasingly warm and dry climate and model-based projections indicate that the number of forest fires are increasing. This study provides new insights into the drivers of forest fire occurrence in the Czech Republic, during the period 2006 to 2015, by focusing on climate, land cover, and human activity factors. The average annual number of forest fires during the study period was 728, with a median burned area of 0.01 ha. Forest fire incidence showed distinct spring (April) and summer (July to August) peaks, with median burned areas of 0.04 ha and 0.005 ha, respectively. Relationships between the predictors (climate data, forest-related data, socioeconomic data, and landscape-context data) and the number of forest fires in individual municipality districts were analyzed using Generalized Additive Models (GAM) on three time scales (annually, monthly, and during the summer season). The constructed GAMs explained 48.7 and 53.8% of forest fire variability when fire occurrence was analyzed on a monthly scale and during the summer season, respectively. On an annual scale, the models explained 71.4% of the observed forest fire variability. The number of forest fires was related to the number of residents and overnight tourists in the area. The effect of climate was manifested on monthly and summer season scales only, with warmer and drier conditions associated with higher forest fire frequency. A higher proportion of conifers and the length of the wildland–urban interface were also positively associated with forest fire occurrence. Forest fire occurrence was influenced by a combination of climatic, forest-related, and social activity factors. The effect of climate was most pronounced on a monthly scale, corresponding with the presence of two distinct seasonal peaks of forest fire occurrence. The significant effect of factors related to human activity suggests that measures to increase public awareness about fire risk and targeted activity regulation are essential in controlling the risk of fire occurrence in Central Europe. An increasing frequency of fire-conducive weather, forest structure transformations due to excessive tree mortality, and changing patterns of human activity on the landscape require permanent monitoring and assessment of possible shifts in forest fire risk. Forestry reclamation practices have been very popular in the second half of the last century, and many spoil heaps have been converted into forests since. In our experiment, three forest reclamations of different ages (~90, ~50, and ~30 years) and three soil vegetation covers (I—maple and cherry, II—maple, and III—alder) from Sokolov, Czech Republic, were investigated. In each of the three stands, two soil profiles have been dug, and both disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were taken from all recognized horizons. Samples were tested for bulk and particle density, porosity, water retention capacity, pH (H2O, KCl), cation exchange capacity, oxidizable carbon content, organic matter quality, plant available nutrients, and risk elements. A comparison of these properties throughout the profile, as well as between the stands, was presented. A significant role of stand age in soil profile development and soil quality was observed, as well as the tendency of the anthropogenic mine Technosol to evolve into a forest Cambisol in this climate region and parent material. Influence of forest vegetation cover was observed to ameliorate soil properties by accumulating organic matter, thus reducing compaction and increasing CEC and nutrient availability. In the near future, it is predicted that the natural distribution range of forest tree species will be reshaped due to the rapid changes in climate conditions. The assisted migration of species in favorable environmental conditions, as future solutions for sustainable forest management, could be supported by genetic tests. This study aims to evaluate the adaptive potential of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and the opportunities for applying assisted migration practices in the Carpathian region of Romania. Growth and stability performances, as well as phenotypic plasticity of 31 international beech provenances, were assessed in two common garden experiments located in optimum growing conditions and at the eastern margin of the beech distribution range, respectively. For all analyses, trees height, breast height diameter, and survival were determined. Survival and growth traits were higher by 6–8% in the ecological optimum for beech. The highest mean plasticity was obtained by three provenances from France and one from Denmark. Three provenances performed better in both trials. Increasing the management sustainability of beech forests in a changing climate might be possible by using assisted migration practices, which include the promotion of the highest adapted and productive provenances only in the provenance region where they performed. Subtropical forest phenology differentiation is affected by temperature, precipitation, and topography. Understanding the primary contributing elements and their interactions with forest phenology can help people better comprehend the subtropical forest growth process and its response to climate. Meanwhile, the temporal and spatial variations of phenological rhythms are important indicators of climatic impacts on forests. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze both a total area and different forest growth environments within the whole (i.e., coastal site areas (II, IV) and inland site areas (I, III)) as to spatiotemporal patterns associated with subtropical forests in Fujian Province, which is located at the boundary between the middle and south subtropical zones. Considering the asymmetric effects of climate and forest growth, this study chose pre-seasonal and cumulative temperature and precipitation factors and utilized the GeoDetector model to analyze the dominant drivers and interactions within phenology differentiation in Fujian Province. The results show the following: (1) All of the phenological parameters were advanced or shortened over the 19-year observation period; those of shrubland and deciduous broadleaf forests fluctuated greatly, and their stability was poor. (2) The phenological parameters were more distinct at the borders of the site areas. Additionally, the dates associated with the end of the growth season (EOS) and the date-position of peak value (POP) in coastal areas (i.e., II and IV) were later than those in inland areas (i.e., I and III). Among the parameters, the length of the growth season (LOS) was most sensitive to altitude. (3) Precipitation was the main driving factor affecting the spatial heterogeneity of the start of the growth season (SOS) and the EOS. The relatively strong effects of preseason and current-month temperatures on the SOS may be influenced by the temperature threshold required to break bud dormancy, and the relationship between the SOS and temperature was related to the lag time and the length of accumulation. The EOS was susceptible to the hydrothermal conditions of the preseason accumulation, and the variation trend was negatively correlated with temperature and precipitation. Spatial attribution was used to analyze the attribution of phenology differentiation from the perspectives of different regions, thus revealing the relationships between forest phenology and meteorological time-lag effects, the result which can contribute to targeted guidance and support for scientific forest management. The fast-growing tree, eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), currently is being planted to catalyze native forest restoration on degraded agricultural sites in the southeastern United States. Many of these restoration sites are appropriate for short rotation woody crop (SRWC) culture that addresses climate mitigation objectives, but information needed to optimize climate mitigation objectives through such plantings is limited. Therefore, we established a 10-year experiment on degraded agricultural land located in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, USA, aiming to quantify the dynamics of aboveground carbon (AGC) accumulation in a cottonwood planting of four replicated spacing levels (3.7 × 3.7 m, 2.7 × 1.8 m, 2.1 × 0.8 m, and (0.8 + 1.8) × 0.8 m) aligned with SRWC systems targeting various ecosystem services. Annual sampling revealed a substantial range in increments of AGC and year 10 carbon stocks among stands of different densities. Mean annual increments for AGC (MAIAGC) were similar for the two tightest spacing levels, peaking higher than for the other two spacings at about 7.5 Mg ha−1 y−1 in year 7. Year 10 AGC ranged between 22.3 Mg ha−1 for stands spaced 3.7 × 3.7 m and 70.1 Mg ha−1 for stands of the two tightest spacings, leading us to conclude that a spacing between 2.1 × 0.8 m and 2.7 × 1.8 m would maximize aboveground carbon stocks through year 10 on sites of similar agricultural degradation. Increments and accumulation of AGC on the degraded site trended lower than values reported from more productive sites but illustrate that quick and substantial transformation of the carbon stock status of degraded agricultural sites can be achieved with the application of SRWCs to restore forests for climate mitigation and other compatible ecosystem services. Wildfire hazard is a prominent issue in subtropical forests as climate change and extreme drought events increase in frequency. Stand-level fuel load and forest structure are determinants of forest fire occurrence and spread. However, current fuel management often lacks detailed vertical fuel distribution, limiting accurate fire risk assessment and effective fuel policy implementation. In this study, backpack laser scanning (BLS) is used to estimate several 3D structural parameters, including canopy height, crown base height, canopy volume, stand density, vegetation area index (VAI), and vegetation coverage, to characterize the fuel structure characteristics and vertical density distribution variation in different stands of subtropical forests in China. Through standard measurement using BLS point cloud data, we found that canopy height, crown base height, stand density, and VAI in the lower and middle-height strata differed significantly among stand types. Compared to vegetation coverage, the LiDAR-derived VAI can better show significant stratified changes in fuel density in the vertical direction among stand types. Among stand types, conifer-broadleaf mixed forest and C. lanceolata had a higher VAI in surface strata than other stand types, while P. massoniana and conifer-broadleaf mixed forests were particularly unique in having a higher VAI in the lower and middle-height strata, corresponding to the higher surface fuel and ladder fuel in the stand, respectively. To provide more informative support for forest fuel management, BLS LiDAR data combined with other remote sensing data were advocated to facilitate the visualization of fuel density distribution and the development of fire risk assessment. Dengue is a serious infectious disease worldwide and a climate-sensitive disease. Thus, our goals were to (i) evaluate the relationship between dengue incidence and meteorological variables (rainfall and air temperature); (ii) identify the spatiotemporal pattern of dengue incidence in the municipalities of Mato Grosso from 2001 to 2020; and (iii) verify the spatial dependence of dengue incidence in the dry and wet seasons. We used dengue data from 2001 to 2020, monthly rainfall estimates from GPM, and daily air temperature estimates from ERA-5. The municipalities of the Mato Grosso state are included in 16 healthcare territories. The seasonal rainfall pattern indicates that the peak of the dengue endemic occurred in the wet season. However, drier and/or warmer places had a lower incidence of dengue in the dry season. Furthermore, a lagged effect of meteorological variables on dengue incidence has been identified, ranging from 0 to 7 months. Hotspot areas were identified which might have the potential for an intense spreading of dengue in Mato Grosso. They were mainly concentrated in the healthcare territory of Teles Pires (ID 14) in the dry season, while they were concentrated in the healthcare territories of Garças Araguaia (ID 5), Oeste (ID 11), and Teles Pires (ID 14) in the wet season. In addition, they are located in the Am climate and in the Amazon Forest and Brazilian savanna biomes, which have higher dengue incidence values. Expansive soils change volume due to changes in moisture content, which results in ground movement. Lightweight shallow-depth structures such as pavements, residential footings, and pipelines can suffer distress as they face additional stresses from the moving ground. The soil reactivity (the ability of soil to expand or contract due to change in moisture content) and the interactions at the soil-atmosphere-vegetation boundary are two of the major contributing factors to the ground movement. The current methodology used in design to account for ground movement is based on limited field and laboratory observations. Aiming at a better understanding of the interaction at the soil-atmosphere-vegetation boundary and its correlation with ground movement, this paper presents results from a field study. The research site was located in a semi-arid climate area and consisted of moderately to highly reactive clay soils. Part of the site was vegetated with mature trees, and part was occupied by grass. The order of 10 s of mm difference was observed in the magnitude of movement across the site owing to site soil variability as well as differences in vegetation. The areas with large trees showed relatively lower ground movement over the study period compared to the area occupied by grass, which was attributed to the microclimate created by the tree canopy and the already established deeper drying of the soil near the trees. The increased frequency of climate change-induced droughts poses a survival challenge for forest trees, particularly for the common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). Drought conditions adversely affect water supply and nutrient uptake, yet there is limited understanding of the intricate interplay between nutrient availability and drought stress on the physiology, growth, and biomass accumulation in young trees. We aimed to address this knowledge gap by examining the effects of irrigation and fertilisation and their interaction with various parameters in common beech saplings, including foliar and root N, P, and K concentrations; height and diameter increments; and aboveground and belowground biomass production. Our findings revealed that a higher fertilisation dose increased nutrient availability, also partially mitigating immediate drought impacts on foliar N concentrations. Also, higher fertilisation supported the post-drought recovery of foliar phosphorus levels in saplings. Prolonged drought affected nitrogen and potassium foliar concentrations, illustrating the lasting physiological impact of drought on beech trees. While drought-stressed beech saplings exhibited reduced height increment and biomass production, increased nutrient availability positively impacted root collar diameters. These insights have potential implications for forest management practices, afforestation strategies, and our broader understanding of the ecological consequences of climate change on forests. Environmental issues related to global warming and urbanization are becoming more serious. Many studies have shown that urban vertical planting can effectively reduce ambient temperature. However, the impact of different vertical planting combinations on urban microclimate has rarely been studied in Taiwan. Thus, in this study, the impact of different proportions of green walls and green roofs on the environment is explored. Referring to 6 times 6 high-rise buildings of 90 m in the ideal city. FLUENT was used to simulate the average climatic conditions of the Taipei Station in the past ten years' summer. Since the actual building has openings that cannot reach 100% vertical plant coverage, the coverage is calculated based on the proportion of the green coverage area to the area of bare walls and roof decks. We had four options, including case 1 without greening, case 2 (green wall 25% + green roof 75%), case 3 (50% green wall + 50% green roof), and case 4 (75% green wall + 25% green roof). The research results show that at the height of the pedestrian layer (1.5 m), the wind speed of urban streets is reduced due to the obstruction of surrounding buildings. The installation of wall greening slows down the wind speed and reduces the ambient temperature, which is better than roof greening. In the urban canopy (90.5 m), as the Z-axis height increases, the higher the green roof ratio, the higher the wind speed. To improve the overall urban wind below 100% of the total greening balance of walls and roofs, it is recommended that wall greening be 50–75% and roof greening be 25–50%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural disturbances (wildfires, droughts, beetle outbreaks) shaped temperate forests for millennia, including dry forests of the western USA. Could they now best restore and adapt dry forests to climate change while protecting nearby communities? Mechanical fuel-reduction treatments (e.g., thinning) reduce landscape heterogeneity and appear ineffective since <1% of the treated area encounters fire each year and fires are still increasing. We propose and analyze a nature-based solution (NbS), using natural disturbances, to see whether it is feasible, how long it might take, and whether it could more effectively restore and adapt dry forests to climate change. We compared 2010–2019 disturbance rates on ~16 million ha of federal dry forests with historical data. We evaluated how much adaptation is achieved by comparing how trees are selected by treatments and disturbances. We found an NbS, which works with natural disturbances and prioritizes community protection, is feasible in western USA dry forests since disturbances are occurring mostly within historical rates. Natural disturbances, unlike mechanical treatments, select survivors that are more likely to be genetically adapted to survive future disturbances and climate change, while perpetuating ecosystem services. Natural disturbances also could ecologically restore forest heterogeneity, better maintain carbon storage, and reduce management needs. A fully developed disturbance-based NbS could more effectively adapt dry forests to climate change within ~30–40 years if active management is reprioritized to protect the built environment and communities near public forests. Temperate conifer forests stressed by climate change could be lost through tree regeneration decline in the interior of high-severity fires, resulting in type conversion to non-forest vegetation from seed-dispersal limitation, competition, drought stress, and reburns. However, is fire triggering this global change syndrome at a high rate? To find out, I analyzed a worst-case scenario. I calculated fire rotations (FRs, expected period to burn once across an area) across ~56 million ha of forests (~80% of total forest area) in 11 western USA states from 2000 to 2020 for total high-severity fire area, interior area (>90 m inward), and reburned area. Unexpectedly, there was no trend in area burned at high severity from 2000 to 2020 across the four forest types studied. The vulnerable interior area averaged only 21.9% of total high-severity fire area, as 78.1% of burned area was within 90 m of live seed sources where successful tree regeneration is likely. FRs averaged 453 years overall, 2089 years in interiors, and 19,514 years in reburns. Creation of vulnerable interior area in a particular location is thus, on average, a 2000+ year event, like a very rare natural disaster, and reburns that may favor type conversion to non-forest have almost no effect. This means that, from 2021 to 2050 at most, only 3.0–4.2% of total forest area may become a vulnerable interior area, based on a likely high aridity-based climate projection of future fire and a higher scenario, where rates in the exceptional 2020 fire year have become the norm. These findings show that increased management to reduce high-severity fires is not currently needed, as the risk to forests from this global change syndrome is likely quite low up to 2050. Wildfire has extensive and profound impacts on forest structure and function. Therefore, it is important to study the spatial and temporal patterns of forest fire regimes and their drivers in order to better understand the feedbacks between climate change, fire disturbance, and forest ecosystems. Based on the Global Fire Atlas dataset, three forest fire regime components (fire occurrence density, burned rate, and median fire size) were extracted for China from 2003 to 2016. Three statistical models (Boosted Regression Tree, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine) were used to systematically analyze the relationships between patterns of forest fire disturbance and climate, human activities, vegetation, and topography in China, as well as their spatial heterogeneity in different climatic regions. The results indicate that the spatial distribution of forest fires is heterogeneous, and different forest fire regime components are predicted by different factors. At the national level, the distribution of forest fire regimes mainly corresponds to climatic factors, although the relationship between median fire size and predictors is obscure. At the scale of each ecoregion, the main climate predictors of forest fire occurrence density and burned rate change from temperature in the north to temperature and precipitation in the south. Median fire size varies with elevation and temperature in the south. Forests, being the primary repository of terrestrial biodiversity, possess a significant capacity to regulate the phenomenon of climate change. It is additionally crucial to consider how natural disasters affect the state and development of forest biodiversity. The alteration of climate patterns over recent decades has had a discernible impact on forest ecosystems, specifically the damage caused by drought to ecosystems, has become increasingly evident. Nevertheless, there is limited research to elucidate the relationship between forest biodiversity and drought, as well as to explore the mechanisms of biodiversity response to drought. This review synthesizes the existing literature on the effects of climate change on forests across various scales and examines the adaptive responses of forest communities to drought-induced stress. Forest biodiversity can be influenced by various factors, including the severity of drought, initial climatic conditions, and the composition of species in drylands. During periods of drought, the biodiversity of forests is influenced by a range of intricate physiological and ecological factors, encompassing the capacity of plants to withstand drought conditions and their subsequent ability to recuperate following such periods. Monitoring water consumption dynamics across the geographic range of an ecosystem may indicate the possible variation and stress in a biome. Here, model output data based on remote sensing (1979–2022) were used to examine the water consumption dynamics and effects on cone production in three geographic margins in the longleaf pine's range (i.e., Bladen Lake State Forest, Escambia Experimental Forest, and Kisatchie National Forest) under varying climatic conditions. Results indicated that the mean annual transpiration at Escambia was approximately 431 mm and that at Bladen and Kisatchie was 500 mm. Mean monthly transpiration peaked twice (June and October) at Escambia but only once (August) at Bladen and Kisatchie. The mean annual evapotranspiration ranged from approximately 900 mm at Kisatchie to about 791 mm at Escambia and Bladen. The mean annual transpiration/evapotranspiration ratio was about 0.65 at Bladen and 0.55 at Escambia and Kisatchie. A significant correlation existed between evapotranspiration and specific humidity across the sites on a monthly scale but not on a yearly scale. Significant negative relationships existed between precipitation and the ratios of transpiration/precipitation and evapotranspiration/precipitation on the yearly scale across the sites. Negative power relationships were observed between precipitation and the specific humidity/precipitation ratio on monthly and yearly scales. Cone production was generally highest in years with moderate water consumption. This article presents the findings of a research endeavor focused on the diurnal and seasonal dynamics of heat balance and its constituent elements within an oak forest situated in the expanse of the Karadag Nature Reserve. Computed are the values corresponding to the elements of heat balance, encompassing radiation balance, latent heat fluxes corresponding to heat consumption for evaporation, turbulent heat exchange transpiring within the atmosphere, and heat flux coursing through the soil. The features of changes in the heat balance in two key areas are considered: in the zone of growth of the downy oak forest in an open area and in the forest itself. The study discloses patterns characterizing the apportionment of radiation balance into heat and energetic fluxes within the context of the downy oak landscapes native to the southeastern Crimea. Scrutiny of the data established that a substantial proportion of radiation balance finds application in propelling turbulent heat flux, while a minor share is channeled into processes of evaporation and soil heat flux. Evidenced is that the magnitudes of heat balance components, encompassing radiation balance, latent heat fluxes corresponding to heat consumption for evaporation, turbulent heat exchange transpiring within the atmosphere, and heat flux through the soil within the sub-canopy realm, undergo modifications contingent upon the seasons of the year and the vegetative phases of the downy oak forest. The correlation between air temperature and the constituents of heat balance is subject to analysis both within the confines of the territory in the zone of growth of the downy oak forest in an open area and in the forest itself. Manifest is the constancy of the influence exerted by forest vegetation upon heat balance; nevertheless, the degree of its impact is circumscribed by the cyclical dynamics of foliage upon the trees: a well-developed canopy serves to amplify the influence exerted upon the distribution of heat and energetic fluxes. As a result of climate change, Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) is dying across Europe. One of the primary reasons for this is the cultivation of unsuitable spruce provenances and ecotypes. This study deals with the growth and genetics of the ecotypes of Norway spruce, the most important tree species of the Czech Republic. At the study site, namely Cukrák, an experimental site was established in 1964 to plant three basic spruce ecotypes: low-elevation (LE), medium-elevation (ME) and high-elevation (HE) ecotype. A dendrometric inventory, dendrochronological sampling and genetic analyses were carried out on individual trees in 45 to 46 years old spruce stands. The ME ecotype was the most productive in terms of its carbon sequestration potential, while the HE ecotype had the lowest radial growth. All ecotypes exhibited a noteworthy negative correlation between tree-ring growth and seasonal temperature, annual temperature, previous year September to current year August temperature, June to July temperature, as well as individual monthly temperatures from previous May to current August. The relationship of annual and seasonal precipitation to growth was significant only for the LE and ME ecotypes, but precipitation from previous year September to current year August and precipitation from current June to July were the most significant for all ecotypes, where the ME had the highest r value. The HE ecotype does not adapt well to a dry climate and appears to be unsuitable compared to the other ecotypes under the studied conditions. This study also documented intra-population genetic variation within years of low growth, as evidenced by significant clonal heritability. The selection of the appropriate spruce ecotypes is essential for the stability and production of future stands and should become an important pillar of forest adaptation to climate change. With global warming and increasing human activities, exploring the impact of the rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and climate change on forest ecosystems is crucial. In this study, we focus on Euphrates poplar (Populus euphratica Oliv.) in the upper reaches of the Tarim River in the Alaer region of Xinjiang. We use dendrochronological methods, tree-ring width, and stable carbon isotope series to explain basal area increment (BAI) and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) changes. We further explore the influence of past climate change and human activities on the radial growth and iWUE of P. euphratica through stable oxygen isotope analysis combined with historical literature records. The results showed that relative humidity had an essential effect on Δ13C and δ18O fractionation in P. euphratica tree rings, whereas the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was considered the main factor influencing the inter-annual variability of the iWUE and BAI. Since 1850, long-term variations in iWUE have exhibited an upward trajectory correlated with rising atmospheric CO2 levels. Approximately 13% of this iWUE increase can be attributed to changes in carbon-concentration-induced water use efficiency (cciWUE). Although Δ13C and δ18O were generally uncorrelated between 1850 and 2018, around 1918, their relationship changed from being weakly correlated to being significantly negatively correlated, which may record changes related to the upstream Tarim River diversion. During the period from 1850 to 2018, both the BAI and iWUE showed an increasing trend for P. euphratica growth; however, the relationship between them was not stable: during 1850–1958, both variables were mainly influenced by climatic factors, while during 1959–2018, the most important influence was due to human activities, specifically agricultural development and irrigation diversions. An abrupt surge in the BAI was observed from 1959 to 1982, reaching its peak around 1982. Surprisingly, post-1983, the escalating iWUE did not correspond with a continuation of this upward trajectory in the BAI, highlighting a divergence from the previous trend where the enhanced iWUE no longer facilitated the growth of P. euphratica. Despite P. euphratica having adapted to the continuously rising Ca, improving its iWUE and growth capacity, this adaptive ability is unstable and may easily be affected by human activities. Overall, the increase in Ca has increased the iWUE of P. euphratica and promoted its growth at a low frequency, while human activities have promoted its development at a high frequency. The ecological resilience of forests is the ability to return to a stable state after being subjected to external disturbances, and it is among the critical indicators of forest status. Climate change has significant effects on forest ecological resilience and diversity. In this research, we selected Mao County as the study region, and employed the forest landscape model LANDIS-II to simulate the effect of different climate scenarios on the ecological resilience of alpine forests in western Sichuan during the next 300 years from the forest composition and structure perspective. The findings revealed that: (1) climate change will favor an increase in forest ecological resilience values in short simulations, but future climate scenarios will negatively impact the ecological resilience of forests as the simulation progresses through the middle and long term. (2) The rate of change of forest ecological resilience in the MTDF and SCF ecotones, which have a higher proportion of Fir (Abies fabri) and Spruce (Picea asperata), was greater than that in the rest of the ecotones in the short-term simulation. In contrast, it was the opposite in the medium-term simulation. The rate of change of forest ecological resilience was more significant in the long-term simulation in all four ecotones. (3) The high values of forest ecological resilience in the short- and medium-term simulations were primarily concentrated within the MTDF and SCF ecotones among the midwestern and northern parts of the study region. When the simulation proceeded to a later stage, the ecological resilience of the forests decreased significantly throughout the study region, with high values occurring only in some areas within the western parts of the study region. The community structure of macrofungi is influenced by multiple complex factors, including climate, soil, vegetation, and human activities, making it challenging to discern their individual contributions. To investigate the dynamic changes in macrofungal diversity in an Ancient Tree Park located in Northeast China and explore the factors influencing this change, we collected 1007 macrofungi specimens from different habitats within the park and identified 210 distinct fungal species using morphological characteristics and ITS sequencing. The species were classified into 2 phyla, 6 classes, 18 orders, 55 families, and 94 genera. We found macrofungal compositions among different forest types, with the mixed forest displaying the highest richness and diversity. Climatic factors, particularly rainfall and temperature, positively influenced macrofungal species richness and abundance. Additionally, by analyzing the soil fungal community structure and comparing aboveground macrofungi with soil fungi in this small-scale survey, we found that the soil fungal bank is not the main factor leading to changes in the macrofungal community structure, as compared to the influence of climate factors and forest types. Drought is a significant natural hazard with widespread socioeconomic and environmental impacts. This study investigated the long-term drought characteristics in a Mediterranean oak forest ecosystem using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at various time scales and seasons. The analysis was based on a long-term time series dataset obtained from a meteorological station located at the University Forest of Taxiarchis in Greece. The dataset encompassed a substantial time span of 47 years of continuous monitoring, from 1974 to 2020. To accomplish the goals of the current research, the SPEI was calculated for 3, 6, 12, and 24-month periods, and drought events were identified. The Mann-Kendall (M-K) test was used to analyze the trends in drought severity and evaluate the trends significance. The results showed that shorter time scales (SPEI3 and SPEI6) were more efficient for identifying short-term droughts, while longer time scales (SPEI12 and SPEI24) were better for identifying less frequent but longer-lasting drought episodes. The analysis consistently revealed positive trends across all seasons and time scales, indicating an overall transition towards wetter conditions. Nearly all the data series for SPEI12 and SPEI24 exhibited statistically significant upward trends (wetter conditions) at a 95% confidence level. However, more intense events were detected during the recent decade using the seasonal analysis. Additionally, as the time scale expanded, the magnitude of these trends increased. The findings contributed to a better understanding of drought dynamics in Mediterranean oak forests and provided valuable information for forest management and climate change adaptation planning. New methodologies, rules, modalities, and procedures for the mechanism established under Article 6(4) of the Paris Agreement have led to the need to change the national conditions for the implementation of climate projects, including climate projects in forests. However, the issue of evaluating the effectiveness of such projects and their attractiveness to investors remains controversial, as their place and role in the modern economy remain uncertain. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the investment attractiveness and silvicultural feasibility of implementing reforestation climate projects in the central forest steppe of Russia. Thanks to mathematical models (including the developed coefficient of carbon intensity of investment costs) and the calculations carried out, it will be possible to develop a differentiated approach to assessing the investment attractiveness of climate projects' implementation in forests. Reforestation projects including the planting of fast-growing tree species were considered. Maximum carbon sequestration for these projects is expected to occur over a period of 10–30 years. It was found that the coefficient of carbon intensity of investment costs, discounted by the duration of such projects, may become the basis for decision-making on investments in afforestation and reforestation in the central forest steppe. In this study, data collected from 2000 to 2019 on vapor pressure deficit ( V P D ) and its relationship with micrometeorological variables (fire occurrences, aerosol concentration, temperature, and carbon flux) were analyzed in six locations situated in different Brazilian ecosystems: Rio Branco, AC; Manaus, AM; Alta Floresta, MT (within the Amazon Rainforest); Baia das Pedras, MT (Pantanal); Fazenda Miranda, MT (Cerrado); and Petrolina, PE (northeastern semiarid region). Temporal series analysis of V P D was conducted by determining the principal component of singular spectrum analysis (SSA) for this variable in all locations. It was observed that the main component of SSA for V P D is sensitive to local land-use changes, while no evidence of large-scale influences related to global climate change was observed. A strong coupling between V P D values and local maximum temperature with monthly fire occurrence and logarithmic aerosol concentration profiles was also observed. The results of the study are discussed in the context of the ecosystems' carbon sequestration capacity. (1) Background: The forest of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica is an important semi-arid ecosystem in Hulunbuir sandy land that plays a key role in the carbon cycle and wind erosion control. It is crucial to explore the main factors affecting the radial growth of trees of P. sylvestris var. mongolica. (2) Methods: The study established the tree-ring chronology of P. sylvestris var. mongolica and analyzed the relationships among the radial growth, competition index, and climate variables using correlation analysis and a linear mixed effect model to explore the influence of competition and climate on radial growth of P. sylvestris var. mongolica. (3) Results: The results indicated that tree growth is mainly affected by the maximum average temperature (Tmax) and precipitation in June and July of the current year and that tree growth significantly decreased with increasing competition pressure. Analysis of the linear mixed effect model showed that tree age, competition intensity, self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index (scPDSI) from May to July, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) have a significant impact on radial growth. Identifying the main climatic controls of productivity differences in different forest ecosystems is beneficial for revealing the patterns of carbon cycle changes in terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, exploring the differences in their productivity responses to temperature and precipitation at interannual and inter-monthly scales is conducive to identifying the mechanisms of carbon cycle changes in forest ecosystems, which can enhance the study of the forest ecosystem carbon cycle. In addition, the effect of climate factor changes on the net primary productivity (NPP) of typical forest types in subtropical areas remains unclear. Here, we simulated the dynamic changes in the NPP of four typical forest types (evergreen needleleaf forest (ENF), evergreen broadleaf forest (EBF), bamboo forest (BF), and evergreen needleleaf–broadleaf mixed forest (ENBMF)) in the Poyang Lake Basin from 1970 to 2021 using the Biome-BGC model where its parameters were adjusted according to the ecophysiological characteristics of forest types in this study. Then, the correlation between the NPP of the four typical forest types and climate factors was examined at interannual and inter-monthly scales; the response of the NPP of four typical forest types to future temperature and precipitation changes was explored. The results revealed that NPP showed a fluctuating downward trend after 2000 in ENF, EBF, and ENBMF. The NPP of the ENF was primarily driven by precipitation at the interannual and inter-monthly levels (p < 0.01). The impact of precipitation and accumulated temperature (AT) on NPP of EBF is not significant interannually; the NPP of BF demonstrated a minor correlation with AT and no significant correlation with precipitation. However, the NPP variation of EBF and BF was significantly affected by the temperature at the inter-monthly scale (p < 0.01), with R2 of 0.85 and 0.92, respectively. At the interannual scale, the NPP of ENBMF was mainly driven by precipitation (p < 0.01); at the inter-monthly scale, it was driven by precipitation (p < 0.01) and AT (p < 0.01), with R2 of 0.74 and 0.62, respectively. Under designed climate scenarios, the precipitation changes will have a greater impact on NPP of ENF; the NPP changes in the EBF, BF, and ENBMF will be mainly controlled by temperature increase, and only a 10% change in precipitation leads to its smaller impact on their NPP changes. Measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE), solar global radiation, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and meteorological parameters were carried out on a subtropical conifer plantation in China from 2013 to 2016. These observations were used to develop and evaluate an empirical model of gross primary production (GPP) (EMGPP) with 3-factor and 2-factor models. Using a 3-factor model, the simulated hourly GPP values were consistent with observations with a relative bias of 9.96% and normalized mean square error values of 0.07 mg CO2 m−2 s−1 for the scattering factor S/Q (S and Q are diffuse and global solar radiation) < 0.5 and 15.52% and 0.15 mg CO2 m−2 s−1 for S/Q ≥ 0.5. Validations of the EMGPP for hourly, daily, monthly, and annual GPP values were carried out and showed that both 3-factor and 2-factor EMGPP models can accurately capture diurnal, seasonal and interannual variations in GPP, but most simulated GPP overestimated the observed value. When the scattering factor is not available, the 2-factor EMGPP can be used. The EMGPP using 3-factor and 2-factor models was applied to simulate GPP under all sky conditions from 2013–2016, and the estimated GPP were in reasonable agreement with the measured values and showed systematic overestimations of 31% and 29% for mean hourly GPP and 41% and 29% for annual amounts, respectively. The sensitivity test demonstrated that GPP values were more sensitive to changes in PAR than to changes in water vapor and scattering factor at low S/Q, but were more sensitive to changes in water vapor than to PAR and S/Q at high S/Q. The sensitivity test revealed some mechanisms of GPP and its related processes, including the relationships between GPP and scattering of PAR, GPP and water vapor, which were in good agreement with other observations and model studies. An empirical model based on PAR energy balance can better describe the multiple interactions between GPP and its driving factors (PAR, water vapor, S/Q). Forests around the world are facing climate change. Increased drought stress and severe heat waves in recent decades have negatively impacted on forest health, making them more vulnerable and prone to dieback and mortality phenomena. Although the term vulnerability is used to indicate an increased susceptibility of forests to climate change with a worsening of their vigour status that can compromise their ability to respond to further climate extreme events, there are still uncertainties on how to evaluate it. Indeed, evaluation of forest vulnerability is complex both because of some critical issues in the estimation methods used and because of the multiple factors influencing the response of forests to ongoing climate change. A way to assess the vulnerability to environmental stresses is by combining remote sensing and dendroecological data. However, these two approaches entail multiple uncertainties, including growth/photosynthetic relationships, carbon allocation dynamics, biases of tree-ring data and noisy remote sensing data, which require further clarification for proper monitoring of pre- and post-drought forest trajectories. Our review aims to create an overview of the current literature and knowledge to understand the critical issues, needs and possible solutions that forest vulnerability research is addressing. This paper presents a warning that there is a need for better consideration of microclimatology in urban planning, particularly when addressing microclimate-related human comfort in designing outdoor public spaces. This paper develops a protocol for microclimate-related street assessment, considering simultaneous dynamic environmental components data gathering and better understanding of microclimatic conditions when commuting by bicycle. The development of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) has the potential for overcoming the gap between microclimatology and urban planning, since ICT tools can produce a variety of soft data related to environmental quality and microclimate conditions in outdoor spaces. Further, the interpretation of data in terms of their applicability values for urban planning needs to be well addressed. Accordingly, this paper tests one particular ICT tool, a prototype developed for microclimate data collection along cycling paths. Data collection was performed in two European cities: Bilbao (Spain) and Ljubljana (Slovenia), where the main objective was the development of a protocol for microclimate-related street assessment and exploration of the potential of the collected data for urban planning. The results suggest that the collected data enabled sufficient interpretation of detailed environmental data and led to a better consideration of microclimatology and the urban planning of cycling lanes. The paper contributes to urban planning by presenting a protocol and providing fine-grained localised data with precise spatial and temporal resolutions. The data collected are interpreted through human comfort parameters and can be linked with rates/levels of comfort. Downed woody debris (DWD) can alter the chemical and biological properties of forest soils, and this process is affected by the degree of DWD decay. Our aim was to assess the effects of the entire decay process of DWD on the associated soil microbial communities. Here, we examined the differences in soil microbial community size and composition among five decay stages (DC Ⅰ–Ⅴ) of Masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) at two soil depths in a climate transitional forest and then linked these differences to soil chemical properties. The decay of DWD increased soil total PLFAs, and the complexity of soil microbial networks was highest in stage Ⅱ and then decreased with the decay stage. The relative abundance of fungi increased with the decay stage, while the relative abundance of gram-positive bacteria decreased with the decay stage. The microbial community composition at a soil depth of 0–10 cm was mainly driven by soil pH and organic C (SOC), and at a depth of 10–20 cm, soil pH was the primary determinant of microbial community composition. Our findings suggest that DWD decomposition reduces microbial physiological stress, promotes fungal growth, and stimulates microbial biomass, highlighting the positive impact of DWD on forest soils. Future research is needed to elucidate the universal effects of DWD decomposition on soil properties, especially focusing on the response of soil microbial processes to the decomposition time of DWD. The role of forests in mitigating climate change by acting as a carbon sink is becoming increasingly important. Forest management practices can either positively or negatively affect the ability of forests to mitigate climate change. The objectives of our study were to: (a) investigate the effects of natural disturbances on long-term carbon sequestration dynamics in forests and (b) identify opportunities to adapt current forest management practices to increase carbon sequestration in forests. The study focused on mixed mountain forests in the Slovenian Alps, dominated by Norway spruce, and used the SLOMATRIX model to simulate forest development. Three forest management scenarios were simulated: (1) no management, (2) business-as-usual and (3) an optimized scenario maximizing carbon sequestration in forests while achieving the required harvest. Our results indicate that both forest management practices and natural disturbances have an impact on carbon sequestration dynamics. Optimizing harvests resulted in changes in the diameter structure and species composition of the harvested trees. Although natural disturbances can hinder the mitigation of climate change impacts, they can also catalyze forest adaptation to climate change and reduce the time required to reach carbon equilibrium. Investigating forest phenology prediction is a key parameter for assessing the relationship between climate and environmental changes. Traditional machine learning models are not good at capturing long-term dependencies due to the problem of vanishing gradients. In contrast, the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) can effectively address the problem of vanishing gradients and allow the neural network to capture longer-range dependencies. In this study, an optical camera was used as experimental equipment to obtain forest images. The absolute greenness index (GEI) data of the region of interest (ROI) in the images were calculated to fit the seasonal variation curve of forest phenology. The GRU neural network model was introduced to train and analyze the GEI data, and the performance of the GRU neural network was evaluated using the Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) methods. Finally, the model was used to predict the trend of GEI data for the next 60 days. The results showed that: (1) In terms of training and predicting forest phenology, the GRU model was validated using histograms and autocorrelation graphs, which indicated that the distribution of predicted data was consistent with the trend of actual data, the GRU model data was feasible, and the model was stable. (2) The MSE values of the GRU model at rain-fed-CK (preset point 1), sufficient drip irrigation-DIFI (preset point 3), and sufficient furrow irrigation-BIFI (preset point 5) were 9.055 × 10−5, 12.91 × 10−5, and 8.241 × 10−5, respectively. The RMSE values were 9.516 × 10−3, 11.36 × 10−3, and 7.313 × 10−3, respectively. The MAE values were 7.174 × 10−3, 8.241 × 10−3, and 5.351 × 10−3, respectively. These results indicate that the overall performance of the GRU model was good. (3) The predicted GEI data for the next 60 days showed a trend consistent with actual changes in GEI data, as demonstrated by the GRU model. The GRU model has become the preferred method for phenological prediction due to its simple internal structure and relatively short training time. Results show that the GRU model can achieve forest phenological change prediction and can reveal in-depth insights into future forest growth and climate change, providing a theoretical basis for the application of forest phenological prediction. Priority conservation areas are the key areas of biodiversity maintenance and ecosystem conservation. Based on a Maxent model, this study predicted the potential distribution of Pseudotsuga sinensis under the current climate and future climate change scenarios in Guizhou province, and then, assessed three kinds of priority conservation area under climate change. The results were as follows: (1) The AUC (Area Under the Curve) values showed excellent prediction accuracy of the model. (2) The areas of the potential habitats of P. sinensis forests under the current climate and future climate change scenarios were 22,062.85 km2 and 18,395.92 km2, respectively. As for their spatial distribution, the potential habitats of P. sinensis forests were distributed in the Bijie, Zunyi, Tongren, Liupanshui and Xingyi regions under the current climate, and in the Kaili region, in addition to the above-mentioned cities, under future climate change scenarios. (3) The total area of priority conservation areas under climate change was 25,350.26 km2. The area of the predicted sustainable potential habitats was 15,075.96 km2, of the vulnerable potential habitats was 7256.59 km2 and of the derivative potential habitats was 3017.71 km2. It is increasingly recognized that invasion by alien plant species such as Acacia spp. can impact tropical forest ecosystems, although quantifications of nutrient fluxes for invaded lowland tropical rain forests in aseasonal climates remain understudied. This paper describes the methodology and presents data collected during a year-long study of litterfall production and leaf litter decomposition rates in two distinct tropical lowland forests in Borneo affected by Acacia invasion. The study is the first to present a comprehensive dataset on the impacts of invasive Acacia species on Bornean forests and can be further used for future research to assess the long-term impact of Acacia invasion in these forest ecosystems. Extensive studies of nutrient cycling processes in aseasonal tropical lowland rainforests occurring on different soil types remain limited. Therefore, this dataset improves understanding of nutrient cycling and ecosystem processes in tropical forests and can be utilized by the wider scientific community to examine ecosystem responses in tropical forests. Hydromelioration networks aim to expand the vadose zones of waterlogged and peaty sites, which is expected to provide more soil space for trees' roots, thus improving forest stand stability and production. However, the recent climate is manifested by increasing air temperatures, changed distribution of precipitation and frequent droughts. This raises the issue of the suitability of such measures. Additionally, the impacts on the ground water table (GWT) level, drainage, and forest health are disputed. This study deals with the behaviour of the shallow-aquifer GWT level in a formerly deforested headwater catchment named U Dvou louček (UDL) which had been monitored for 30 years and placed at a mountain site in north-eastern Bohemia, Czech Republic. GWT (84 m long transect with 22 probes), precipitation, throughfall, discharge, air temperatures and stand parameters were measured. Young Norway spruce stands now dominate within the UDL area. Average precipitation of the open area reached 1285 mm, and precipitation in years 2003, 2015 and 2018 was minimal (910 to 950 mm). Calibration of the GWT measurement took place in 1992–1995. After a 5-year stabilisation period in 1996–2001 with gradually falling GWT levels, following the digging of new ditches, the GWT no longer fluctuated significantly. The discharge and GWT change responses to stand growth were modest, and the impact of forest tending was limited. Lower GWTs in dry years were temporary. The inter-annual water levels in the immediate vicinity of the ditches fluctuated the least. The small-scale technical hydromelioration intervention neither had a negative impact on the GWT level, nor threatened the water supply of growing forest stands even in dry years. The results confirmed the long-term potential of such measures to improve the water regime of reforested clear cuts on waterlogged forest soils in mountains with a minimal risk of threat in warming environments. The changing climate is worsening the threats to forests, such as insect outbreaks, fires, and drought, especially old-growth forest, which is more susceptible to disturbance. Therefore, it is important to detect the disturbance areas, identify the disturbance agents, and evaluate the disturbance intensity in old-growth forest. We tried to derive the forest disturbance information based on multiple remote sensing datasets (Global Forest Change, MODIS, and ERA5-Land) from 2000 to 2021 in Changbai Mountain, Northeast China, and explored their relationship with climate factors. The results showed that (1) wind damage and insect outbreaks are two main forest disturbance agents, (2) the increasing temperature during overwintering periods and the decreasing precipitation during activity periods increase the risk of insect outbreaks, and (3) disturbances lead to significant changes in forest structure and functional indices, which can be well captured by the remote sensing data. In the study, we creatively combined low-frequency remote sensing images and high-frequency meteorological data to determine the specific time of wind damage. The final results suggested that the vulnerability of old-growth forest to climate change may be mainly reflected through indirect implications, such as the increased risk of strong winds and insect disturbances. This study utilizes forest inventory and climate attributes as the basis for estimating models of wildfire risk and associated biomass loss (tree mortality) and then demonstrates how they can be applied in calculating CO2 emissions related to the incidence of wildfires from U.S. forests. First, we use the full set of over 150,000 FIA plots of national forest inventory and climatic parameters to estimate models of the annual probability of wildfire occurrence and loss of live tree biomass. Then, maps of the spatial allocation of both the model-derived probability of wildfire occurrences and tree mortality are presented at the national level. The probability of wildfire occurrences and tree mortality were defined by a complex non-linear association of climatic conditions and forest ownerships, available aboveground biomass, and the age of the stand. Then, we provide an example of how these models can estimate potential CO2 emissions from wildfires by using FIA inventory data. We estimated 6.10, 16.65, 22.75, and 31.01 million metric tons of annual CO2 emissions with low, medium, high, and catastrophic combustion rates, respectively, from forests due to wildfire in the continental U.S. The wildfire risk and biomass loss due to tree mortality maps can be used by landowners, managers, public agencies, and other stakeholders in identifying high-risk wildfire zones and the potential CO2 emissions. These equations can also help estimate fire risk and associated CO2 emissions for future climate conditions to provide insight into climate change-related wildfire occurrences. Millions of local communities in southern Africa depend on forest ecosystems and the goods and services they provide for their livelihoods. This paper aims to assess the socio-economic benefits of forest goods and services in a changing climate by focusing on the forest products of Colophospermum mopane (C. mopane) in the Kunene and Omusati regions in northern Namibia. We used C. mopane product data from 2011 to 2021. Our analyses showed that local communities harvested five main products from C. mopane, namely firewood, poles, droppers, rafters, and roots. Firewood and poles were the primary C. mopane products harvested by local communities, mainly for subsistence use. Our results suggest that C. mopane potentially continues to the provision of goods and services for the livelihood of local communities, despite the changing climate in northern Namibia. We propose future studies in predictive analysis focus on extreme weather events, such as forest fires, droughts, floods, and other climate-related hazards that affect goods and services provided by forest ecosystems in the northern regions and the entire country. Understanding the ecological role of fire in forests is essential for proper management and conservation programs. The objectives of this study were: (1) to reconstruct the history of fires in a temperate forest in Sierra Madre Occidental; and (2) to interpret the impacts of fire and climate on forest structure. Sixty tree cross-sections with fire scars were analyzed, and descriptive statistics of fire history were generated. Additionally, growth cores were analyzed, and the ages of trees of different diameter categories were calculated. The synchrony between fire history and tree establishment was determined, and precipitation and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) values were correlated with the number of trees established per year. The presence of 137 fire scars was determined, which allowed the reconstruction of 41 fire events over the period 1855–2019; however, only the period 1940–2015 was used to compare tree recruitment, as tree establishment was detected in this period. The mean fire interval (MFI) was 2.28 years in general, and 12.17 years for extensive fires. As regards vegetation, a continuous recruitment pattern was observed, typical of a frequent low-intensity fire regime, although peak regeneration occurred after extensive fires. The correlation analysis showed that the number of trees established per year was influenced by the wet conditions that occurred in December of the previous year and the dry conditions in September and October of the previous year. This finding demonstrates the historical influence of fire and climate on the structure of the current stand in the study area. Therefore, the present study highlights the importance of including fire in forest management programs, considering the natural fire regime to which the species in this ecosystem are already adapted. Plant leaf functional traits can reflect the adaptive strategies of plants to environmental changes. Exploring the patterns and causes of geographic variation in leaf functional traits is pivotal for improving ecological theory at the macroscopic scale. In order to explore the geographical variation and the dominant factors of leaf functional traits in the forest ecosystems of China, we measured 15 environmental factors on 16 leaf functional traits in 33 forest reserves in China. The results showed leaf area (LA), carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N), carbon-to-phosphorus ratio (C/P), nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio (N/P), phosphorus mass per area (Pa) and nitrogen isotope abundance (δ15N)) were correlated with latitude significantly. LA, Pa and δ15N were also correlated with longitude significantly. The leaf functional traits in southern China were predominantly affected by climatic factors, whereas those in northern China were mainly influenced by soil factors. Mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual humidity (MAH) were shown to be the important climate factors, whereas available calcium (ACa), available potassium (AK), and available magnesium (AMg) were shown to be the important climate factors that affect the leaf functional traits of the forests in China. Our study fills the gap in the study of drivers and large-scale geographical variability of leaf functional traits, and our results elucidate the operational mechanisms of forest–soil–climate systems. Frequent forest fires cause air pollution, threaten biodiversity and spoil forest ecosystems. Forest fire vulnerability assessment is a potential way to improve the ability of forests to resist climate disasters and help formulate appropriate forest management countermeasures. Here, we developed an automated hybrid machine learning algorithm by selecting the optimal model from 24 models to map potential forest fire vulnerability over China during the period 2001–2020. The results showed forest aboveground biomass (AGB) had a vulnerability of 26%, indicating that approximately 2.32 Gt C/year of forest AGB could be affected by fire disturbances. The spatiotemporal patterns of forest fire vulnerability were dominated by both forest characteristics and climate conditions. Hotspot regions for vulnerability were mainly located in arid areas in western China, mountainous areas in southwestern China, and edges of vegetation zones. The overall forest fire vulnerability across China was insignificant. The forest fire vulnerability of boreal and temperate coniferous forests and mixed forests showed obviously decreasing trends, and cultivated forests showed an increasing trend. Protected cropping produces more food per land area than field-grown crops. Protected cropping includes low-tech polytunnels utilizing protective coverings, medium-tech facilities with some environmental control, and high-tech facilities such as fully automated glasshouses and indoor vertical farms. High crop productivity and quality are maintained by using environmental control systems and advanced precision phenotyping sensor technologies that were first developed for broadacre agricultural and can now be utilized for protected-cropping applications. This paper reviews the state of the global protected-cropping industry and current precision phenotyping methodology and technology that is used or can be used to advance crop productivity and quality in a protected growth environment. This review assesses various sensor technologies that can monitor and maintain microclimate parameters, as well as be used to assess plant productivity and produce quality. The cold desert ecosystem of the north-western Himalaya in India's is considered to be the most vulnerable region to climate change. In this region, Juniperus macropoda Boisser grows across an altitudinal gradient and is highly sensitive to biotic, physiographic, and climatic factors. Keeping this in view, the present study aimed at ascertaining the response of Juniperus macropoda to changing climatic conditions. To achieve the target of the study, the area (elevation ranges from 3525 to 4150 m asl) was divided into thirteen elevation ranges in the cold desert of Lahaul valley (Himachal Pradesh). The NDVI change detection map from 1994–2017 revealed an increase in the area under the vegetation in the NDVI range of 0–0.15 (240%) and 0.15–0.30 (32%), which indicated the emergence of grasses and new recruits in the area. An increase in the minimum and maximum temperature during monsoon and post-monsoon season correlated positively with the emergence of the recruits in a significant manner. Furthermore, a decline in rainfall during the monsoon period was also recorded which bears a significant positive correlation with the establishment of recruits. However, the increase in the precipitation during winter resulted in a positive effect on the emergence of recruits. The biophysical parameters, like average height, diameter as well as the average age of the dominant trees showed a declining trend with the elevation. However, the age histogram revealed that the majority of the establishment occurred around 1900 and between 1975–2010. The tree ring analysis of J. macropoda revealed that the species is shifting upward at a rate of 3.91 m year−1. Besides this, the area is experiencing the impact of climate change resulting in an increase in the area under vegetation and migration towards the higher elevation, and many species of lichens were also found to invade the bare rock. Previous studies have shown that climatic and anthropogenic factors influence the variations in the stable isotope signature of tree materials in an urban ecosystem. However, the responses of urban trees to various anthropogenic and precipitation interventions are unclear. To fill the research gap, the isotopic composition (δ15N and δ18O) and total nitrogen content of the soil-plant system of urban forests were measured, focusing on typical urban tree species (Populus tomentosa and Ficus virens). The research was done under various land uses in China's Beijing and Shenzhen megacities (with different humidity conditions). The linear mixed-effect model revealed that the δ15N values in the leaves of roadside Ficus virens were significantly higher than those in urban park sites, away from the road (δ15N difference = 7.2‰). In contrast, Populus tomentosa leaves exhibited a non-significant difference (δ15N difference = −1.8‰). Further regression analysis revealed that the variations in δ15N in tree leaves could be attributed to the proximity to highways, suggesting the influence of vehicle exhaust on δ15N values in roadside trees. The linear mixed-effect model also revealed δ18O values significantly higher in Populus tomentosa leaves than in Ficus virens leaves. To assess the influence of humidity conditions on δ18O values in the leaves, the ratio of the atmospheric and intercellular vapor pressures (ea/ei) of tree canopies was estimated. The result revealed that the ea/ei of Ficus virens was significantly higher than for Populus tomentosa, ascribed to the variation in the humidity conditions of the two megacities. These results highlight that urban trees can potentially serve as bioindicators for atmospheric pollution and humidity. Our findings highlight the ecophysiological responses of urban forests related to N and O as they vary according to traffic exhaust and relative humidity. The capacity of forests to store carbon, combined with time-tested approaches to managing forests, make forests a useful tool for atmospheric carbon mitigation. The primary goals of this study are to determine the amount of unrealized mitigation available from Improved Forest Management (IFM) in the Acadian Forest of New England in the northeastern U.S., and to demonstrate how this mitigation can feasibly be attained. This study used the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) to model the impacts of IFM practices articulated by the New England Forestry Foundation on carbon storage in the Acadian Forest. Our results, together with empirical data from well-managed forests, show that if the modeled improved management is employed on privately owned timberland across the Acadian Forest of New England, carbon storage could be increased by 488 Tg CO2e. Our financial modeling shows that IFM could be funded in this region by combining income from carbon markets with the philanthropic funding of conservation easements, timber revenues, and capital investments from private investors who prioritize social and economic goals alongside financial returns.
