Background and objectives: This review aims to delve into the role of artificial intelligence in medicine. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by superficial mucosal inflammation, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. By identifying the challenges inherent in UC diagnosis, we seek to highlight the potential impact of artificial intelligence on enhancing both diagnosis and treatment methodologies for this condition. Method: A targeted, non-systematic review of literature relating to ulcerative colitis was undertaken. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched to categorize a well-rounded understanding of the field of artificial intelligence and its developing role in the diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis. Articles that were thought to be relevant were included. This paper only included articles published in English. Results: Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer algorithms capable of learning, problem solving and decision-making. Throughout our review, we highlighted the role and importance of artificial intelligence in modern medicine, emphasizing its role in diagnosis through AI-assisted endoscopies and histology analysis and its enhancements in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Despite these advances, AI is still hindered due to its current lack of adaptability to real-world scenarios and its difficulty in widespread data availability, which hinders the growth of AI-led data analysis. Conclusions: When considering the potential of artificial intelligence, its ability to enhance patient care from a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective shows signs of promise. For the true utilization of artificial intelligence, some roadblocks must be addressed. The datasets available to AI may not truly reflect the real-world, which would prevent its impact in all clinical scenarios when dealing with a spectrum of patients with different backgrounds and presenting factors. Considering this, the shift in medical diagnostics and therapeutics is coinciding with evolving technology. With a continuous advancement in artificial intelligence programming and a perpetual surge in patient datasets, these networks can be further enhanced and supplemented with a greater cohort, enabling better outcomes and prediction models for the future of modern medicine. For over a century, induction furnaces have been used in the core of foundries for metal melting and heating. They provide high melting/heating rates with optimal efficiency. The occurrence of faults not only imposes safety risks but also reduces productivity due to unscheduled shutdowns. The problem of diagnosing faults in induction furnaces has not yet been studied, and this work is the first to propose a data-driven framework for diagnosing faults in this application. This paper presents a deep neural network framework for diagnosing electrical faults by measuring real-time electrical parameters at the supply side. Experimental and sensory measurements are collected from multiple energy analyzer devices installed in the foundry. Next, a semi-supervised learning approach, known as the local outlier factor, has been used to discriminate normal and faulty samples from each other and label the data samples. Then, a deep neural network is trained with the collected labeled samples. The performance of the developed model is compared with several state-of-the-art techniques in terms of various performance metrics. The results demonstrate the superior performance of the selected deep neural network model over other classifiers, with an average F-measure of 0.9187. Due to the black box nature of the constructed neural network, the model predictions are interpreted by Shapley additive explanations and local interpretable model-agnostic explanations. The interpretability analysis reveals that classified faults are closely linked to variations in odd voltage/current harmonics of order 3, 11, 13, and 17, highlighting the critical impact of these parameters on the model's prediction. Medical images play an important role in medical diagnosis and treatment. Oncologists analyze images to determine the different characteristics of deadly diseases, plan the therapy, and observe the evolution of the disease. The objective of this paper is to propose a method for the detection of brain tumors. Brain tumors are identified from Magnetic Resonance (MR) images by performing suitable segmentation procedures. The latest technical literature concerning radiographic images of the brain shows that deep learning methods can be implemented to extract specific features of brain tumors, aiding clinical diagnosis. For this reason, most data scientists and AI researchers work on Machine Learning methods for designing automatic screening procedures. Indeed, an automated method would result in quicker segmentation findings, providing a robust output with respect to possible differences in data sources, mostly due to different procedures in data recording and storing, resulting in a more consistent identification of brain tumors. To improve the performance of the segmentation procedure, new architectures are proposed and tested in this paper. We propose deep neural networks for the detection of brain tumors, trained on the MRI scans of patients' brains. The proposed architectures are based on convolutional neural networks and inception modules for brain tumor segmentation. A comparison of these proposed architectures with the baseline reference ones shows very interesting results. MI-Unet showed a performance increase in comparison to baseline Unet architecture by 7.5 % in dice score, 23.91 % insensitivity, and 7.09 % in specificity. Depth-wise separable MI-Unet showed a performance increase by 10.83 % in dice score, 2.97 % in sensitivity, and 12.72 % in specificity as compared to the baseline Unet architecture. Hybrid Unet architecture achieved performance improvement of 9.71 % in dice score, 3.56 % in sensitivity, and 12.6 % in specificity. Whereas the depth-wise separable hybrid Unet architecture outperformed the baseline architecture by 15.45 % in dice score, 20.56 % in sensitivity, and 12.22 % in specificity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For many parasitic diseases, the microscopic examination of clinical samples such as urine and stool still serves as the diagnostic reference standard, primarily because microscopes are accessible and cost-effective. However, conventional microscopy is laborious, requires highly skilled personnel, and is highly subjective. Requirements for skilled operators, coupled with the cost and maintenance needs of the microscopes, which is hardly done in endemic countries, presents grossly limited access to the diagnosis of parasitic diseases in resource-limited settings. The urgent requirement for the management of tropical diseases such as schistosomiasis, which is now focused on elimination, has underscored the critical need for the creation of access to easy-to-use diagnosis for case detection, community mapping, and surveillance. In this paper, we present a low-cost automated digital microscope—the Schistoscope—which is capable of automatic focusing and scanning regions of interest in prepared microscope slides, and automatic detection of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in captured images. The device was developed using widely accessible distributed manufacturing methods and off-the-shelf components to enable local manufacturability and ease of maintenance. For proof of principle, we created a Schistosoma haematobium egg dataset of over 5000 images captured from spiked and clinical urine samples from field settings and demonstrated the automatic detection of Schistosoma haematobium eggs using a trained deep neural network model. The experiments and results presented in this paper collectively illustrate the robustness, stability, and optical performance of the device, making it suitable for use in the monitoring and evaluation of schistosomiasis control programs in endemic settings. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a serious movement disorder that may eventually progress to mild cognitive dysfunction (MCI) and dementia. According to the Parkinson's foundation, one million Americans were diagnosed with PD and almost 10 million individuals suffer from the disease worldwide. An early and precise clinical diagnosis of PD will ensure an early initiation of effective therapeutic treatments, which will potentially slow down the progression of the disease and improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers. Machine and deep learning are promising technologies that may assist and support clinicians in providing an objective and reliable diagnosis of the disease based upon significant and unique features identified from relevant medical data. In this paper, the author provides a comprehensive review of the artificial intelligence techniques that were recently proposed during the period from 2016 to 2022 for the screening and staging of PD as well as the identification of the biomarkers of the disease based on Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), speech tests, handwriting exams, and sensory data. In addition, the author highlights the current and future trends for PD diagnosis based machine and deep learning and discusses the limitations, challenges, potential future solutions, and recommendations for a reliable application of machine and deep learning for PD detection and screening. Featured Application: Medical diagnosis and computer-aided diagnosis systems. Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women. Accurate diagnosis at an early stage can reduce the mortality associated with this disease. Governments and health organizations stress the importance of early detection of breast cancer as it is related to an increase in the number of available treatment options and increased survival. Early detection gives patients the best chance of receiving effective treatment. Different types of images and imaging modalities are used in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. One of the imaging types is "infrared thermal" breast imaging, where a screening instrument is used to measure the temperature distribution of breast tissue. Although it has not been used often, compared to mammograms, it showed promising results when used for early detection. It also has many advantages as it is non-invasive, safe, painless, and inexpensive. The literature has indicated that the use of thermal images with deep neural networks improves the accuracy of early diagnosis of breast malformation. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to investigate to what extent convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with attention mechanisms (AMs) can provide satisfactory detection results in thermal breast cancer images. We present a model for breast cancer detection based on deep neural networks with AMs using thermal images from the Database for Research Mastology with Infrared Image (DMR-IR). The model will be evaluated in terms of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, and will be compared against state-of-the-art breast cancer detection methods. The AMs with the CNN model achieved encouraging test accuracy rates of 99.46%, 99.37%, and 99.30% on the breast thermal dataset. The test accuracy of CNNs without AMs was 92.32%, whereas CNNs with AMs achieved an improvement in accuracy of 7%. Background: Machine learning (ML) is a key component of artificial intelligence (AI). The terms machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning are erroneously used interchangeably as they appear as monolithic nebulous entities. This technology offers immense possibilities and opportunities to advance diagnostics in the field of medicine and dentistry. This necessitates a deep understanding of AI and its essential components, such as machine learning (ML), artificial neural networks (ANN), and deep learning (DP). Aim: This review aims to enlighten clinicians regarding AI and its applications in the diagnosis of oral diseases, along with the prospects and challenges involved. Review results: AI has been used in the diagnosis of various oral diseases, such as dental caries, maxillary sinus diseases, periodontal diseases, salivary gland diseases, TMJ disorders, and oral cancer through clinical data and diagnostic images. Larger data sets would enable AI to predict the occurrence of precancerous conditions. They can aid in population-wide surveillance and decide on referrals to specialists. AI can efficiently detect microfeatures beyond the human eye and augment its predictive power in critical diagnosis. Conclusion: Although studies have recognized the benefit of AI, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning has not been integrated into routine dentistry. Globally, there is a substantial unmet need to diagnose various diseases effectively. The complexity of the different disease mechanisms and underlying symptoms of the patient population presents massive challenges in developing the early diagnosis tool and effective treatment. Machine learning (ML), an area of artificial intelligence (AI), enables researchers, physicians, and patients to solve some of these issues. Based on relevant research, this review explains how machine learning (ML) is being used to help in the early identification of numerous diseases. Initially, a bibliometric analysis of the publication is carried out using data from the Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases. The bibliometric study of 1216 publications was undertaken to determine the most prolific authors, nations, organizations, and most cited articles. The review then summarizes the most recent trends and approaches in machine-learning-based disease diagnosis (MLBDD), considering the following factors: algorithm, disease types, data type, application, and evaluation metrics. Simple Summary: Early detection of malignant melanoma (MM) has the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality as the thickness of the lesion is closely associated with prognosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a non-invasive technology that has the potential to aid clinicians in the early diagnosis of skin cancers, including melanoma. Performance metrics of machine-based AI have been shown to rival or improve upon clinician diagnosis. However, many studies have limited this scope to pre-build image databases that may not replicate real-world settings experienced in general practice. This systematic review aimed to report the performance of commercial or market-approved dermatoscopic systems with AI in the form of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) when tasked with classifying melanoma. The sensitivity and specificity of CNNs are highly varied and illustrate the necessity of clinician-to-patient interaction in the diagnosis process. Clinicians working in unison with AI show the most promise for better performance when classifying MM. Background: Cutaneous melanoma remains an increasing global public health burden, particularly in fair-skinned populations. Advancing technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), may provide an additional tool for clinicians to help detect malignancies with a more accurate success rate. This systematic review aimed to report the performance metrics of commercially available convolutional neural networks (CNNs) tasked with detecting MM. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Web of Science databases. Results: A total of 16 articles reporting MM were included in this review. The combined number of melanomas detected was 1160, and non-melanoma lesions were 33,010. The performance of market-approved technology and clinician performance for classifying melanoma was highly heterogeneous, with sensitivity ranging from 16.4 to 100.0%, specificity between 40.0 and 98.3% and accuracy between 44.0 and 92.0%. Less heterogeneity was observed when clinicians worked in unison with AI, with sensitivity ranging between 83.3 and 100.0%, specificity between 83.7 and 87.3%, and accuracy between 86.4 and 86.9%. Conclusion: Instead of focusing on the performance of AI versus clinicians for classifying melanoma, more consistent performance has been obtained when clinicians' work is supported by AI, facilitating management decisions and improving health outcomes. Heart disease is a significant public health problem, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment and management. Conventional and noninvasive techniques are cumbersome, time-consuming, inconvenient, expensive, and unsuitable for frequent measurement or diagnosis. With the advance of artificial intelligence (AI), new invasive techniques emerging in research are detecting heart conditions using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). Machine learning models have been used with the publicly available dataset from the internet about heart health; in contrast, deep learning techniques have recently been applied to analyze electrocardiograms (ECG) or similar vital data to detect heart diseases. Significant limitations of these datasets are their small size regarding the number of patients and features and the fact that many are imbalanced datasets. Furthermore, the trained models must be more reliable and accurate in medical settings. This study proposes a hybrid one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN), which uses a large dataset accumulated from online survey data and selected features using feature selection algorithms. The 1D CNN proved to show better accuracy compared to contemporary machine learning algorithms and artificial neural networks. The non-coronary heart disease (no-CHD) and CHD validation data showed an accuracy of 80.1% and 76.9%, respectively. The model was compared with an artificial neural network, random forest, AdaBoost, and a support vector machine. Overall, 1D CNN proved to show better performance in terms of accuracy, false negative rates, and false positive rates. Artificial intelligence is highly regarded as the most promising future technology that will have a great impact on healthcare across all specialties. Its subsets, machine learning, deep learning, and artificial neural networks, are able to automatically learn from massive amounts of data and can improve the prediction algorithms to enhance their performance. The early diagnosis of sepsis reduces the risk of the patient's death. Gradient-based algorithms are applied to the neural network models used in the estimation of sepsis in the literature. However, these algorithms become stuck at the local minimum in solution space. In recent years, swarm intelligence and an evolutionary approach have shown proper results. In this study, a novel hybrid metaheuristic algorithm was proposed for optimization with regard to the weights of the deep neural network and applied for the early diagnosis of sepsis. The proposed algorithm aims to reach the global minimum with a local search strategy capable of exploring and exploiting particles in Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and using the mental search operator of the Human Mental Search algorithm (HMS). The benchmark functions utilized to compare the performance of HMS, PSO, and HMS-PSO revealed that the proposed approach is more reliable, durable, and adjustable than other applied algorithms. HMS-PSO is integrated with a deep neural network (HMS-PSO-DNN). The study focused on predicting sepsis with HMS-PSO-DNN, utilizing a dataset of 640 patients aged 18 to 60. The HMS-PSO-DNN model gave a better mean squared error (MSE) result than other algorithms in terms of accuracy, robustness, and performance. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is progressively remodeling our daily life. A large amount of information from "big data" now enables machines to perform predictions and improve our healthcare system. AI has the potential to reshape prostate cancer (PCa) management thanks to growing applications in the field. The purpose of this review is to provide a global overview of AI in PCa for urologists, pathologists, radiotherapists, and oncologists to consider future changes in their daily practice. A systematic review was performed, based on PubMed MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and DBLP databases for original studies published in English from January 2009 to January 2019 relevant to PCa, AI, Machine Learning, Artificial Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks, and Natural-Language Processing. Only articles with full text accessible were considered. A total of 1008 articles were reviewed, and 48 articles were included. AI has potential applications in all fields of PCa management: analysis of genetic predispositions, diagnosis in imaging, and pathology to detect PCa or to differentiate between significant and non-significant PCa. AI also applies to PCa treatment, whether surgical intervention or radiotherapy, skills training, or assessment, to improve treatment modalities and outcome prediction. AI in PCa management has the potential to provide a useful role by predicting PCa more accurately, using a multiomic approach and risk-stratifying patients to provide personalized medicine. WD is caused by ATP7B variants disrupting copper efflux resulting in excessive copper accumulation mainly in liver and brain. The diagnosis of WD is challenged by its variable clinical course, onset, morbidity, and ATP7B variant type. Currently it is diagnosed by a combination of clinical symptoms/signs, aberrant copper metabolism parameters (e.g., low ceruloplasmin serum levels and high urinary and hepatic copper concentrations), and genetic evidence of ATP7B mutations when available. As early diagnosis and treatment are key to favorable outcomes, it is critical to identify subjects before the onset of overtly detrimental clinical manifestations. To this end, we sought to improve WD diagnosis using artificial neural network algorithms (part of artificial intelligence) by integrating available clinical and molecular parameters. Surprisingly, WD diagnosis was based on plasma levels of glutamate, asparagine, taurine, and Fischer's ratio. As these amino acids are linked to the urea–Krebs' cycles, our study not only underscores the central role of hepatic mitochondria in WD pathology but also that most WD patients have underlying hepatic dysfunction. Our study provides novel evidence that artificial intelligence utilized for integrated analysis for WD may result in earlier diagnosis and mechanistically relevant treatments for patients with WD. The increasing availability of molecular data provided by next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques is allowing improvement in the possibilities of diagnosis and prognosis in renal cancer. Reliable and accurate predictors based on selected gene panels are urgently needed for better stratification of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients in order to define a personalized treatment plan. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are currently in development for this purpose. Here, we reviewed studies that developed predictors based on AI algorithms for diagnosis and prognosis in renal cancer and we compared them with non-AI-based predictors. Comparing study results, it emerges that the AI prediction performance is good and slightly better than non-AI-based ones. However, there have been only minor improvements in AI predictors in terms of accuracy and the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) over the last decade and the number of genes used had little influence on these indices. Furthermore, we highlight that different studies having the same goal obtain similar performance despite the fact they use different discriminating genes. This is surprising because genes related to the diagnosis or prognosis are expected to be tumor-specific and independent of selection methods and algorithms. The performance of these predictors will be better with the improvement in the learning methods, as the number of cases increases and by using different types of input data (e.g., non-coding RNAs, proteomic and metabolic).
