Fruit and vegetable processing comes 6th in terms of energy consumption in the agri-food industry. At the same time, 88.4% of the industry's final energy consumption structure is thermal energy, which depends heavily on electricity consumption. In addition, fruit and vegetable processing has a significant impact on the environment due to consumption of significant amounts of water. Reducing these three indicators simultaneously would increase the efficiency of the process while improving environmental protection. This paper proposes neural models of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption for selected major fruit- and vegetable-processing plants in Poland. These models were the basis for formulating a multi-criteria optimization task. Optimization of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption was carried out using genetic algorithms. The optimization results in the sense of Pareto can be the basis for the use of sustainable technology in selected fruit- and vegetable-processing plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overview: Photovoltaic (PV) systems are widely used in residential applications in Poland and Europe due to increasing environmental concerns and fossil fuel energy prices. Energy management strategies for residential systems (1.2 million prosumer PV installations in Poland) play an important role in reducing energy bills and maximizing profits. Problem: This article aims to check how predictable the operation of a household PV system is in the short term—such predictions are usually made 24 h in advance. Methods: We made a comparative study of different energy management strategies based on a real household profile (selected energy storage installation) based on both traditional methods and various artificial intelligence (AI) tools, which is a new approach, so far rarely used and underutilized, and may inspire further research, including those based on the paradigm of Industry 4.0 and, increasingly, Industry 5.0. Results: This paper discusses the results for different operational scenarios, considering two prosumer billing systems in Poland (net metering and net billing). Conclusions: Insights into future research directions and their limitations due to legal status, etc., are presented. The novelty and contribution lies in the demonstration that, in the case of domestic PV grids, even simple AI solutions can prove effective in inference and forecasting to support energy flow management and make it more predictable and efficient. Background/Objectives: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is dynamically growing, and models such as ChatGPT show potential in enhancing medical education. In Poland, to obtain a medical diploma, candidates must pass the Medical Final Examination, which consists of 200 questions with one correct answer per question, is administered in Polish, and assesses students' comprehensive medical knowledge and readiness for clinical practice. The aim of this study was to determine how ChatGPT-3.5 handles questions included in this exam. Methods: This study considered 980 questions from five examination sessions of the Medical Final Examination conducted by the Medical Examination Center in the years 2022–2024. The analysis included the field of medicine, the difficulty index of the questions, and their type, namely theoretical versus case-study questions. Results: The average correct answer rate achieved by ChatGPT for the five examination sessions hovered around 60% and was lower (p < 0.001) than the average score achieved by the examinees. The lowest percentage of correct answers was in hematology (42.1%), while the highest was in endocrinology (78.6%). The difficulty index of the questions showed a statistically significant correlation with the correctness of the answers (p = 0.04). Questions for which ChatGPT-3.5 provided incorrect answers had a lower (p < 0.001) percentage of correct responses. The type of questions analyzed did not significantly affect the correctness of the answers (p = 0.46). Conclusions: This study indicates that ChatGPT-3.5 can be an effective tool for assisting in passing the final medical exam, but the results should be interpreted cautiously. Background: Osteoporosis is a socio-economic problem of modern aging societies. Bone fractures and the related treatments generate the highest costs. The occurrence of osteoporotic fractures is a cause of chronic disability, many complications, reduced quality of life, and often premature death. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to determine which of the patient's potential risk factors pertaining to various diseases and lifestyle have an essential impact on the occurrence of low-energy fractures and the hierarchy of these factors. Methods: The study was retrospective. The documentation of 222 patients (206 women and 16 men) from an osteoporosis treatment clinic in Łódź, Poland was analyzed. Each patient was described by a vector consisting of 27 features, where each feature was a different risk factor. Using artificial neural networks, an attempt was made to create a model that, based on the available data, would be able to predict whether the patient would be exposed to low-energy fractures. We developed a neural network model that achieved the best result for the testing data. In addition, we used other methods to solve the classification problem, i.e., correctly dividing patients into two groups: those with fractures and those without fractures. These methods were logistic regression, k-nearest neighbors and SVM. Results: The obtained results gave us the opportunity to assess the effectiveness of various methods and the importance of the features describing patients. Using logistic regression and the recursive elimination of features, a ranking of risk factors was obtained in which the most important were age, chronic kidney disease, neck T-score, and serum phosphate level. Then, we repeated the learning procedure of the neural network considering only these four most important features. The average mean squared error on the test set was about 27 % for the best variant of the model. Conclusions: The comparison of the rankings with different numbers of patients shows that the applied method is very sensitive to changes in the considered data (adding new patients significantly changes the result). Further cohort studies with more patients and more advanced methods of machine learning may be needed to identify other significant risk factors and to develop a reliable fracture risk system. Background: In the past vicennium, several artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models have been developed to assist in medical diagnosis, decision making, and design of treatment protocols. The number of active pathologists in Poland is low, prolonging tumor patients' diagnosis and treatment journey. Hence, applying AI and ML may aid in this process. Therefore, our study aims to investigate the knowledge of using AI and ML methods in the clinical field in pathologists in Poland. To our knowledge, no similar study has been conducted. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study targeting pathologists in Poland from June to July 2022. The questionnaire included self-reported information on AI or ML knowledge, experience, specialization, personal thoughts, and level of agreement with different aspects of AI and ML in medical diagnosis. Data were analyzed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics v.26, PQStat Software v.1.8.2.238, and RStudio Build 351. Results: Overall, 68 pathologists in Poland participated in our study. Their average age and years of experience were 38.92 ± 8.88 and 12.78 ± 9.48 years, respectively. Approximately 42% used AI or ML methods, which showed a significant difference in the knowledge gap between those who never used it (OR = 17.9, 95% CI = 3.57–89.79, p < 0.001). Additionally, users of AI had higher odds of reporting satisfaction with the speed of AI in the medical diagnosis process (OR = 4.66, 95% CI = 1.05–20.78, p = 0.043). Finally, significant differences (p = 0.003) were observed in determining the liability for legal issues used by AI and ML methods. Conclusion: Most pathologists in this study did not use AI or ML models, highlighting the importance of increasing awareness and educational programs regarding applying AI and ML in medical diagnosis. One method to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicle exhaust is the use of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) fuel. The global use of this fuel is high in European countries such as Poland, Romania, and Italy. There are a small number of computational models for the purpose of estimating the emissions of LPG vehicles. This work is one of the first to present a methodology for developing microscale CO2 emission models for LPG vehicles. The developed model is based on data from road tests using the portable emission measurement system (PEMS) and on-board diagnostic (OBDII) interface. This model was created from a previous exploratory data analysis while using gradient-boosting machine learning methods. Vehicle velocity and engine RPM were chosen as the explanatory variables for CO2 prediction. The validation of the model indicates its good precision, while its use is possible for the analysis of continuous CO2 emissions and the creation of emission maps for environmental analyses in urban areas. The validation coefficients for the selected gradient-boosting method of modelling CO2 emissions for an LPG vehicle are the R2 test of 0.61 and the MSE test of 0.77. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New diseases constantly endanger the lives of populations, and, nowadays, they can spread easily and constitute a global threat. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that the fight against a new disease may be difficult, especially at the initial stage of the epidemic, when medical knowledge is not complete and the symptoms are ambiguous. The use of machine learning tools can help to filter out those sick patients who do not need to be tested for spreading the pathogen, especially in the event of an overwhelming increase in disease transmission. This work presents a screening support system that can precisely identify patients who do not carry the disease. The decision of the system is made on the basis of patient survey data that are easy to collect. A case study on a data set of symptomatic COVID-19 patients shows that the system can be effective in the initial phase of the epidemic. The case study presents an analysis of two classifiers that were tuned to achieve an assumed acceptable threshold of negative predictive values during classification. Additionally, an explanation of the obtained classification models is presented. The explanation enables the users to understand the basis of the decision made by the model. The obtained classification models provide the basis for the DECODE service, which could serve as support in screening patients with COVID-19 disease at the initial stage of the pandemic. Moreover, the data set constituting the basis for the analyses performed is made available to the research community. The current energy prices do not include the environmental, social, and economic short and long-term external effects. There is a gap in the literature on the decision-making model for the energy transition. True Cost Accounting (TCA) is an accounting management model supporting the decision-making process. This study investigates the challenges and explores how big data, AI, or blockchain could ease the TCA calculation and indirectly contribute to the transition towards more sustainable energy production. The research question addressed is: How can IT help TCA applications in the energy sector in Europe? The study uses qualitative interpretive methodology and is performed in the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland. The findings indicate the technical feasibilities of a big data infrastructure to cope with TCA challenges. The study contributes to the literature by identifying the challenges in TCA application for energy production, showing the readiness potential for big data, AI, and blockchain to tackle them, revealing the need for cooperation between accounting and technical disciplines to enable the energy transition. Groundwater quality monitoring in the vicinity of drilling sites is crucial for the protection of water resources. Selected physicochemical parameters of waters were marked in the study. The water was collected from 19 wells located close to a shale gas extraction site. The water quality index was determined from the obtained parameters. A secondary objective of the study was to test the capacity of the artificial neural network (ANN) methods to model the water quality index in groundwater. The number of ANN input parameters was optimized and limited to seven, which was derived using a multiple regression model. Subsequently, using the stepwise regression method, models with ever fewer variables were tested. The best parameters were obtained for a network with five input neurons (electrical conductivity, pH as well as calcium, magnesium and sodium ions), in addition to five neurons in the hidden layer. The results showed that the use of the parameters is a convenient approach to modeling water quality index with satisfactory and appropriate accuracy. Artificial neural network methods exhibited the capacity to predict water quality index at the desirable level of accuracy (RMSE = 0.651258, R = 0.9992 and R2 = 0.9984). Neural network models can thus be used to directly predict the quality of groundwater, particularly in industrial areas. This proposed method, using advanced artificial intelligence, can aid in water treatment and management. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in companies is advancing rapidly. Consequently, multidisciplinary research on AI in business has developed dramatically during the last decade, moving from the focus on technological objectives towards an interest in human users' perspective. In this article, we investigate the notion of employees' trust in AI at the workplace (in the company), following a human-centered approach that considers AI integration in business from the employees' perspective, taking into account the elements that facilitate human trust in AI. While employees' trust in AI at the workplace seems critical, so far, few studies have systematically investigated its determinants. Therefore, this study is an attempt to fill the existing research gap. The research objective of the article is to examine links between employees' trust in AI in the company and three other latent variables (general trust in technology, intra-organizational trust, and individual competence trust). A quantitative study conducted on a sample of 428 employees from companies of the energy and chemical industries in Poland allowed the hypotheses to be verified. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicate the existence of a positive relationship between general trust in technology and employees' trust in AI in the company as well as between intra-organizational trust and employees' trust in AI in the company in the surveyed firms. This article presents several algorithms for controlling water supply system pumps. The aim of having control is the hydraulic optimisation of the network, i.e., ensuring the desired pressure in its recipient nodes, and minimising energy costs of network operation. These two tasks belong to the key issues related to the management and operation of water supply networks, apart from the reduction in water losses caused by network failures and ensuring proper water quality. The presented algorithms have been implemented in an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) system developed at the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBS PAN) and implemented in the waterworks GPW S.A. in Katowice/Poland.
