When describing the behaviour and modelling of real systems, which are characterized by considerable complexity, great difficulty, and often the impossibility of their formal mathematical description, and whose operational monitoring and measurement are difficult, conventional analytical–statistical models run into the limits of their use. The application of these models leads to necessary simplifications, which cause insufficient adequacy of the resulting mathematical description. In such cases, it is appropriate for modelling to use the methods brought by a new scientific discipline—artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence provides very promising tools for describing and controlling complex systems. The method of neural networks was chosen for the analysis of the lifetime of the teeming ladle. Artificial neural networks are mathematical models that approximate non-linear functions of an arbitrary waveform. The advantage of neural networks is their ability to generalize the dependencies between individual quantities by learning the presented patterns. This property of a neural network is referred to as generalization. Their use is suitable for processing complex problems where the dependencies between individual quantities are not exactly known. The application of remote sensing observations in estimating ocean sub-surface temperatures has been widely adopted. Machine learning-based methods in particular are gaining more and more interest. While there is promising relevant progress, most temperature profile reconstruction models are still built upon the gridded Argo data regardless of the impacts of mesoscale oceanic processes. As a follow-on to the previous study that demonstrates the influence of ocean fronts is negligible, we focus on the improvement of temperature profile reconstruction by introducing the sea surface temperature (SST) gradient into the neural network model. The model sensitivity assessments reveal that the normalization of the input variables achieves a higher estimation accuracy than the original scale. Five experiments are then designed to examine the model performances with or without the SST gradient input. Our results confirm that, for a given model configuration, the one with the input of the SST gradient has the lowest reconstruction bias in comparison to the in situ Argo measurements. Such improvement is particularly pronounced below 200 m depth. We also found that the non-linear activation functions and deeper network structures facilitate the performance of reconstruction models. Results of this work open new insights and challenges to refine the mapping of upper ocean temperature structures. While more relevant machine learning methods are worth further exploitation, how to better characterize the mesoscale oceanic processes from surface observations and bring them into the reconstruction models is the key and needs much attention. The main objective of this study was to conduct multi-stage and multi-variant prognostic research to assess the impact of e-mobility development on the Polish power system for the period 2022–2027. The research steps were as follows: forecast the number of electric vehicles (using seven methods), forecast annual power demand arising solely out of the operation of the forecast number of electric vehicles, forecast annual power demand with and without the impact of e-mobility growth (using six methods), forecast daily profiles of typical days with and without the impact of e-mobility growth (using three methods). For the purpose of this research, we developed a unique Growth Dynamics Model to forecast the number of electric vehicles in Poland. The application of Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) to the extrapolation of non-linear functions (to the forecast number of electric vehicles and forecast annual power demand without the impact of e-mobility growth) is our original, unique proposal to use the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Another unique, innovative proposal is to include Artificial Neural Networks (Multi-Layer Perceptron and Long short-term memory (LSTM)) in an Ensemble Model for simultaneous extrapolation of 24 non-linear functions to forecast daily profiles of typical days without taking e-mobility into account. This research determined the impact of e-mobility development on the Polish power system, both in terms of annual growth of demand for power and within particular days (hourly distribution) for two typical days (summer and winter). Under the (most likely) balanced growth variant of annual demand for power, due to e-mobility, such demand would grow by more than 4%, and almost 7% under the optimistic variant. Percentage growth of power demand in terms of variation according to time of day was determined. For instance, for the balanced variant, the largest percentage share of e-mobility was in the evening "peak" time (about 6%), and the smallest percentage was in the night "valley" (about 2%). Accurately predicting oilfield development indicators (such as oil production, liquid production, current formation pressure, water cut, oil production rate, recovery rate, cost, profit, etc.) is to realize the rational and scientific development of oilfields, which is an important basis to ensure the stable production of the oilfield. Due to existing oilfield development index prediction methods being difficult to accurately reflect the complex nonlinear problem in the oil field development process, using the artificial neural network, which can predict the oilfield development index with the function of infinitely close to any non-linear function, will be the most ideal prediction method at present. This article summarizes four commonly used artificial neural networks: the BP neural network, the radial basis neural network, the generalized regression neural network, and the wavelet neural network, and mainly introduces their network structure, function types, calculation process and prediction results. Four kinds of artificial neural networks are optimized through various intelligent algorithms, and the principle and essence of optimization are analyzed. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of the four artificial neural networks are summarized and compared. Finally, based on the application of artificial neural networks in other fields and on existing problems, a future development direction is proposed which can serve as a reference and guide for the research on accurate prediction of oilfield development indicators. The nonlinearity of activation functions used in deep learning models is crucial for the success of predictive models. Several simple nonlinear functions, including Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) and Leaky-ReLU (L-ReLU) are commonly used in neural networks to impose the nonlinearity. In practice, these functions remarkably enhance the model accuracy. However, there is limited insight into the effects of nonlinearity in neural networks on their performance. Here, we investigate the performance of neural network models as a function of nonlinearity using ReLU and L-ReLU activation functions in the context of different model architectures and data domains. We use entropy as a measurement of the randomness, to quantify the effects of nonlinearity in different architecture shapes on the performance of neural networks. We show that the ReLU nonliearity is a better choice for activation function mostly when the network has sufficient number of parameters. However, we found that the image classification models with transfer learning seem to perform well with L-ReLU in fully connected layers. We show that the entropy of hidden layer outputs in neural networks can fairly represent the fluctuations in information loss as a function of nonlinearity. An artificial neural network (ANN)-based supplementary frequency controller is designed for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind farm in a local power system. Since the optimal controller gain that gives highest the frequency nadir or lowest peak frequency is a complicated nonlinear function of load disturbance and system variables, it is not easy to use analytical methods to derive the optimal gain. The optimal gain can be reached through an exhaustive search method. However, the exhaustive search method is not suitable for online applications, since it takes a long time to perform a great number of simulations. In this work, an ANN that uses load disturbance, wind penetration, and wind speed as the inputs and the desired controller gain as the output is proposed. Once trained by a proper set of training patterns, the ANN can be employed to yield the desired gain in a very efficient manner, even when the operating condition is not included in the training set. Therefore, the proposed ANN-based controller can be used for real-time frequency control. Results from MATLAB/SIMULINK simulations performed on a local power system in Taiwan reveal that the proposed ANN can yield a better frequency response than the fixed-gain controller.
