The research and management of Industry 4.0 increasingly relies on accurate real-time quality data to apply efficient algorithms for predictive maintenance. Currently, Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs) offer potential advantages in monitoring tasks for predictive maintenance. However, their applicability requires improvements in aspects such as energy consumption, transmission range, data rate and constant quality of service. Commonly used battery-operated IIoT devices have several limitations in their adoption in large facilities or heat-intensive industries (iron and steel, cement, etc.). In these cases, the self-heating nodes together with the appropriate low-power processing platform and industrial sensors are aligned with the requirements and real-time criteria required for industrial monitoring. From an environmental point of view, the carbon footprint associated with human activity leads to a steady rise in global average temperature. Most of the gases emitted into the atmosphere are due to these heat-intensive industries. In fact, much of the energy consumed by industries is dissipated in the form of waste heat. With this scenario, it makes sense to build heat transformation collection systems as guarantors of battery-free self-powered IIoT devices. Thermal energy harvesters work on the physical basis of the Seebeck effect. In this way, this paper gathers the methodology that standardizes the modelling and simulation of waste heat recovery systems for IoT nodes, gathering energy from any hot surface, such as a pipe or chimney. The statistical analysis is carried out with the data obtained from two different IoT architectures showing a good correlation between model simulation and prototype behaviour. Additionally, the selected model will be coupled to a low-power processing platform with LoRaWAN connectivity to demonstrate its effectiveness and self-powering ability in a real industrial environment. Domestic chimney cleaning is still mostly a manual procedure which can be overly complex, dangerous, and expansive. This paper describes the design of a novel robotic device for chimney cleaning that aims to provide a valuable alternative solution to the traditional manual techniques with user-friendly and low-cost features. The proposed device enables a significant reduction in operator risks, including roof falling and soot dust contact. The paper's content describes, in detail, the design process, including a definition of the main design requirements and steps towards the manufacturing of a preliminary prototype. Moreover, a preliminary validation is described through laboratory tests to demonstrate the engineering feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design solution for the intended semi-autonomous chimney-cleaning application. The need of improving the quality of professions led to the idea of simplification of processes during chimney sweeping. These processes have been essentially the same for tens of years. The goal of this paper is to bring an automation element into the chimney sweeping process, making the job easier for the chimney sweeper. In this paper, an essentially in-pipe robot is presented, which uses brushes to move while simultaneously cleaning the chimney or pipeline. The problem of the robot motion was reduced using an in-pipe robot due to the environments and obstacles that the robot has to face. An approach of using a pneumatic actuator for motion is presented along with the mechanical design. The next part of this paper is focused on the mathematical model of the robot motion, as well as its simulation and testing in the experimental pipeline. The simulations were compared with the experimental measurements and a few analyses were conducted describing the simulation model and its differences with the real robot, as well as considering certain parameters and their impact on the performance of the robot. The loss coefficient is one of the most critical parameters in computing the hydraulic grade line of sewer systems. The head loss coefficient of a manhole is dependent on various hydraulic and structural characteristics, such as manhole mold, connection angle, and the ratio of manhole diameter to pipe diameter. Three different manhole molds, flat, half-bench, and full-bench, and connection angles of 180°, 90°, and 135° are investigated, where the manhole diameter to pipe diameter ratio is 5.3. This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical investigations focused on determining the loss coefficient for two-way straight-through and angled manholes. The flow structure inside the chimney is the significant parameter for the magnitude of the energy loss coefficient. The head loss coefficient is almost constant under the surcharged flow conditions for all kinds of manholes. In terms of head loss coefficients, half-channel manholes do not have a significant advantage over flat-bottomed manholes in the cases of 135° and 90° flow inputs. Determining the height of plume clouds is crucial for various applications, including global climate models. Smokestack plume rise refers to the altitude at which the plume cloud travels downwind until its momentum dissipates and the temperatures of the plume cloud and its surroundings become equal. While most air-quality models employ different parameterizations to forecast plume rise, they have not been effective in accurately estimating it. This paper introduces a novel framework that utilizes Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) to monitor smokestack plume clouds and make real-time, long-term measurements of plume rise. The framework comprises three stages. In the first stage, the plume cloud is identified using an enhanced Mask R-CNN, known as the Deep Plume Rise Network (DPRNet). Next, image processing analysis and least squares theory are applied to determine the plume cloud's boundaries and fit an asymptotic model to its centerlines. The z-coordinate of the critical point of this model represents the plume rise. Finally, a geometric transformation phase converts image measurements into real-world values. This study's findings indicate that the DPRNet outperforms conventional smoke border detection and recognition networks. The paper presents the notion of high dimensionality—in the results—that could change the exergy and energy characteristics of the two-pass solar collector. To examine the energetic aspect of the collector, two different types of absorber plate surfaces were chosen: one that is smooth and one with triangular fins. Both designs have two-pass and wooden baffles underneath their absorber plates. The induced air blower was used for the forced convection of air. To examine the attribute of the data, the least angle regression (LARS) algorithm was used to find a new exergy model without overfitting the data. The second law efficiency dropped by 18.92% for the given models of the solar collector when the air flow rate surged further from 10.10 g·s−1 to 12.10 g·s−1, whereas the energy efficiency showed contradictory behaviour for the given range of air flow rate. It increased by 3% in the first half of the rise in the air flow rate, and on the other hand, a jump of 8% was recorded in the energy efficiency with a rise in the air flow rate by 19.80%. The addition of wooden baffles in the second passage of the flat plate two-pass collector increased the entropy generation due to air friction by 200%, albeit it dropped by 50% at 12.10 g·s−1. Upon increasing the air stream rate from 8.10 g·s−1 to 12.10 g·s−1, the exergy destruction rate at the front finned surface of the two-pass solar air collector receded by 5.49–8.76%, and at the same time, it elevated for the rear passage provided with the wooden baffles. The article is focused on the airflow in a ventilation system in a building. The work examines the methods which enhance the chimney effect. In this paper, three cases with different chimneys were analyzed for the full-scale experiment. These cases were characterized by different geometrical and material parameters, leading to differences in the intensity of the ventilation airflow. The common denominator of the cases was the room with the air inlet and outlet to the ventilation system. The differences between the experimental cases concerned the chimney canal itself, and more precisely its part protruding above the roof slope. The first experimental case concerned a ventilation canal made in a traditional way, from solid ceramic brick. The second experimental case concerned the part that led out above the roof slope with a transparent barrier, called a solar chimney. In the third experimental case, a rotary type of chimney cap was installed on the chimney to improve the efficiency of stack ventilation. All these cases were used to determine the performance of natural ventilation—Air Change per Hour (CH). Additionally, the paper presents a technical and economic comparison of the solutions used. The paper presents historical perspective of fibre-optic seismographs designed and constructed at the Institute of Applied Physics at Military University of Technology, Poland based on the so-called minimum configuration of fibre-optic gyroscope. The briefly presented history, which originated in the 1998 by the system named GS-13P, laid solid foundations for the construction of a three-axis fibre-optic seismograph. The presented system meets all technical requirements of rotational seismology in terms of measurement parameters (measuring range from 10−8 rad/s to several rad/s and frequency from 0.01 Hz to 100 Hz) and utility features (mobility, autonomy, power independence, environmental stability). The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instruments on board both the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) and the first Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS-1) spacecraft provides calibrated reflectance, radiance, and brightness temperature products for weather and climate applications. It has 22 bands with resolutions of 375 and 750 m for imaging and moderate bands, respectively, on 4 focal planes covering a spectral range of 400–12,490 nm. The bands are stratified into reflective solar bands (RSBs), thermal emissive bands (TEBs), and the Day/Night Band (DNB). VIIRS has three on-board calibration sectors: the solar diffuser (SD), on-board calibrator blackbody (OBCBB), and space view (SV). The on-board calibrator targets are used to track on-orbit degradation and background offset drift. Extensive prelaunch radiometric testing of the RSB, TEB, and DNB detector's radiometric sensitivity and noise was performed for both S-NPP and JPSS-1 VIIRS. The combination of prelaunch testing and on-orbit calibrators is used to produce calibrated sensor data record (SDR) reflectance, radiance, and brightness temperatures for use in environmental data record (EDR) products. In the paper, experimental analyses of the free convection heating transfer in a flat wavy-fin heat exchanger with the dimensions of 500 × 500 mm were investigated. The experimental reserch mainly included determining the average heat flux and heat-transfer coefficient for two selected types of finned heat exchangers. First, tests were conducted for exchangers without considering the so-called 'chimney' effect; these tests will be treated as reference studies. Then, experiments for specially designed 'chimneys' over the exchanger with heights of 350, 850, and 1350 mm, respectively, were carried out again. The analyses were performed for an average temperature difference between the heat-exchange surface and the environment in the range of 18 to 55 K. The experimental results demonstrated that, compared to the exchanger without a chimney, the addition of a chimney significantly affects the improvement in the thermal performance of the heat exchanger under natural convection conditions. Regarding the variant without a chimney, when a chimney is used with the highest height of 1350 mm and a maximum temperature difference of 55 K, the average heat flux increases by approximately 450% and the average heat-transfer coefficient is approximately 10 times higher. The heat exchanger characterised by lower airflow resistance showed higher values of average heat flux of 5 to 45% in the Rayleigh number range of 25 to 180. Studies have indicated that in some cases, a simple modification of the geometry of the heat exchanger leads to significant improvements in thermal performance and, in extreme cases, to the elimination of supporting equipment such as fans. Compared with the deeply buried marine gas hydrate deposits, gas hydrates in the shallow subsurface, close to and at the seafloor, have attracted more attention owing to their concentrated distribution, high saturation, and easy access. They accumulate at relatively shallow depths <100–120 m and occur as gas hydrate-bearing mounds (also known as hydrate outcrops, pingoes) at the seafloor derived from the growth of hydrates in the shallow subsurface or as pure hydrate chunks formed by gas leakage. This paper reviews and summarizes such gas hydrate systems globally from the perspective of gas sources, migration pathways, and accumulation processes. Here, we divided them into four categories: fault-chimney-controlled, diapir-fault-controlled, fault-controlled, and submarine mud volcano-controlled deposits. Gas chimneys originate immediately above the restricted regions, mostly affected by faults where high gas concentrations trigger elevated pore fluid pressures. Diapirism derives a dendritic network of growth faults facilitating focused gas discharge and hydrate formation near the seafloor. Furthermore, pre-existing faults or fractures created by overpressured gas from greater depths in accretionary tectonics at convergent margins act as preferential pathways channeling free gas upwards to the seafloor. Gas flux rates decrease from the submarine mud volcano center to its margins, creating a concentric pattern of distributing temperature, gas concentrations, and hydrate contents in shallow sediments around the mud volcano. Hydrate-bound hydrocarbons are commonly of thermogenic origin and correspond to high-background geothermal conditions, whereas microbial gas is dominant in a few cases. The presence of heavier hydrocarbons mitigates the inhibition of hydrate formation by salt or heat. Fluid migration and pathways could be compared to the "blood" and "bones" in an organic system, respectively. The root of a pathway serves as the "heart" that gathers and provides considerable free gas concentrations in a restricted area, thereby triggering pore fluid pressures as one important drive force for focused fluid flow in impermeable sediments (the organic system). Besides the suitable temperature and pressure conditions, a prerequisite for the formation and stability of hydrate deposits in the shallow subsurface and at the seafloor is the sufficient supply of gas-rich fluids through the hydrate stability zone. Thus, the proportion of gas migrating from deep sources is significantly larger than that trapped in hydrates. This paper uses a parametric study to evaluate the significance of the rotational components of Earth's motion in a seismic design. The parametric study is based on the procedures included in Eurocode 8, Part 6. Although the answer to the question of when the effects of rotational components are important is quite a complex one and requires a more in-depth study, our aim was to try to assess this question in a relatively quick manner and with acceptable accuracy. The first part of the paper is devoted to derivation of a simple formula that can be used for expressing the importance of rotational components in comparison with the classic seismic design without their usage. The quasi-static analysis, assuming inertial forces, is used. A crucial role plays the shape of the fundamental mode of the vibration. Due to simplicity reasons, well-known expression for estimation of the first eigenmode as an exponential function with different power coefficients that vary for different types of buildings is used. The possibility of changing the soil parameters is subsequently included into the formula for estimation of the fundamental frequency of tall buildings. In the next part, the overall seismic analyses of complex FEM models of 3D buildings and chimneys are performed. The results from those analyses are then compared with those from simplified calculations. With the increasing complexities, such as massive computing devices and strict requirements for collaboration, of industrial production systems, the concept of the cyber-physical production system (CPPS) is considered as a promising approach for addressing these challenges. However, programmability is a challenge in CPPSs. The traditional chimney style of programming requires considerable design effort from engineers to handle the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of cyber-physical model that encompasses computing, temporal, and geometric semantics along with physical dynamics. Thus, an easy-to-use programming model and an integrated programming framework that are suited to this context are required. However, the existing programming models typically fully consider only computing while only partially considering temporal characteristics, and they rarely consider geometric semantics. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel event-based programming model, GePro, considering the geometric spatial semantics to realize integrated programming and reduce design effort, especially the reconfiguration of adding new physical devices into the exist system. A prototype of GePro is implemented and verified based on IEC 61499 by the implementation of design and reconfigure assembly CPPS. In the field of automatic detection of ship exhaust behavior, a deep learning-based multi-sensor hierarchical detection method for tracking inland river ship chimneys is proposed to locate the ship exhaust behavior detection area quickly and accurately. Firstly, the primary detection uses a target detector based on a convolutional neural network to extract the shipping area in the visible image, and the secondary detection applies the Ostu binarization algorithm and image morphology operation, based on the infrared image and the primary detection results to obtain the chimney target by combining the location and area features; further, the improved DeepSORT algorithm is applied to achieve the ship chimney tracking. The results show that the multi-sensor-based hierarchical detection and tracking method can achieve real-time detection and tracking of ship chimneys, and can provide technical reference for the automatic detection of ship exhaust behavior. A stratigraphic complex composed of mass transport deposits (MTDs), where the gas occurrence allows for the formation of a gas chimney and pipe structure, is identified based on seismic interpretation in the QiongDongNan area of the northern South China Sea. During the Fifth Gas Hydrate Drilling Expedition of the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, this type of complex morphology that has close interaction with local gas hydrate (GH) distribution was eventually confirmed. A flow-reaction model is built to explore the spatial–temporal matching evolution process of massive GH reservoirs since 30 kyr before the present (BP). Five time snapshots, including 30, 20, 10, and 5 kyr BP, as well as the present, have been selected to exhibit key strata-evolving information. The results of in situ tensile estimation imply fracturing emergence occurs mostly at 5 kyr BP. Six other environmental scenarios and three cases of paleo-hydrate existence have been compared. The results almost coincide with field GH distribution below the bottom MTD from drilling reports, and state layer fracturing behaviors always feed and probably propagate in shallow sediments. It can be concluded that this complex system with 10% pre-existing hydrates results in the exact distribution and occurrence in local fine-grained silty clay layers adjacent to upper MTDs. High-definition bathymetry mapping, combined with the measurement of dissolved benthic fluxes and water column biogeochemical properties, allows for a description of new biogeochemical processes around the Panarea Volcanic island. Investigations focused on the CO2 releases from the bottom sea on the east of the Panarea volcanic complex provided insights into the geological setup of the marine area east and south of the Panarea Island. Between the Panarea Island and the Basiluzzo Islet lies a SW-NE-stretching graben structure where a central depression, the Smoking Land Valley, is bounded by extensional faults. Abundant acidic fluids rich in dissolved inorganic Carbon are released on the edges of the graben, along the extensional faults, either diffusely from the seafloor, from hydrothermal chimneys, or at the center of craters of different sizes. The precipitation of iron dissolved in the acidic fluids forms Fe-oxyhydroxides bottom sea crusts that act as a plug, thus preventing the release of the underlying gases until their mounting pressure generates a bursting release. This process is cyclic and results in intermittent gas release from the bottom, leaving extinct craters and quiescent chimneys. The measurement of dissolved benthic fluxes allowed us to estimate the volcanic DIC venting at 15 Mt of CO2 over the past 10,000 years. The fluxes are not distributed homogeneously but rather concentrate along fractures and fault planes, which facilitate their rise to the seafloor. The acidic fluids released affect the chemical properties and structure of the water column through the formation of layers with a lower pH under the pycnocline, which can limit volcanic CO2 release to the atmosphere. Further and continuous monitoring and investigation of the area are needed in order to complete a thorough picture of the variations in fluid releases through time and space. The importance of such monitoring lies in the development of a new method for detecting and quantifying the diffusive dissolved benthic fluxes on a volcanic sea bottom affected by hydrothermal seeps. Buildings, energy, and the environment are key issues facing construction around the world. The energy efficiency of buildings is a key topic when it comes to reducing the world's energy consumption, releasing harmful gases, and global climate change, as they consume about 40% of the world's energy supplies. Heat losses in buildings reduce the energy performance of buildings and are basically important to them. In the paper, the authors focus on the main problems related to heat losses generated by chimney systems, which are inseparable equipment of building structures, resulting in lower energy efficiency and, at the same time, technical efficiency and durability of the building partitions themselves. Authors present thermal imaging with its contribution to the detection of heat losses, thermal bridges, insulation problems, and other performance disturbances, and then verifications using appropriate simulation models. The mathematical apparatus of artificial neural networks was implemented to predict the temperature distributions on the surfaces of prefabricated chimney solutions. In Europe, we can often find a large building substance equipped with traditional chimneys, which disrupts the current trend of striving to reduce energy consumption, especially that derived from fossil fuels. Speaking of energy-efficient buildings, one should not ignore those that, without additional security and modern installations, are constantly used in a very wide range. Therefore, the article deals with an essential problem that is not perceived in design studies and during the operation period as having a basis in incorrect architectural solutions and which can be easily eliminated. It concerns the cooling of internal partitions of buildings on their last storeys, in places where chimneys are located, regardless of their function. The authors of the paper decided to take a closer look at this phenomenon, which may allow the limiting of its effects and at the same time reduce its impact on the energy performance of technologically older buildings. Development of load-bearing fiber reinforced plastic (hereinafter referred to as FRP) composite structures in civil engineering, exploited under high temperatures, such as industrial chimneys and gas ducts, requires the knowledge of their long-term behavior under constant and cyclic mechanical and temperature loads. Such conditions mean that the viscoelasticity of FRP should be considered along with the thermal aging effect. This research is devoted to the effects of thermal aging on the viscoelastic behavior of polymers. Two sets of experiments were conducted: creep tensile tests and cyclic heating in a constrained state. The Kelvin–Voigt viscoelasticity model was used to determine the rheological parameters of binder from experimental creep curves. Cyclic heating was used to compare the behavior of normal and thermally aged binders and to evaluate the possibility of temperature stress accumulation. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used for polymer's structural changes investigation. Both tests showed that non-aged glassed polymer (hereinafter referred to as GP) was prone to viscoelastic behavior, while the thermally aged GP lost viscosity and worked almost perfectly elastic. It was assumed that long heat treatment had caused changes in the inner structure of the GP, reducing the number of weak bonds and increasing the number of elastic ones. Therefore, the results show that the designing of FRP structures, exploited under thermomechanical load, requires using the elastic model while taking into account the properties of FRP after long-term heat treatment. Due to its wide monitoring range and low cost, visual-based fire detection technology is commonly used for fire detection in open spaces. However, traditional fire detection algorithms have limitations in terms of accuracy and speed, making it challenging to detect fires in real time. These algorithms have poor anti-interference ability against fire-like objects, such as emissions from factory chimneys, clouds, etc. In this study, we developed a fire detection approach based on an improved YOLOv5 algorithm and a fire detection dataset with fire-like objects. We added three Convolutional Block Attention Modules (CBAMs) to the head network of YOLOv5 to improve its feature extraction ability. Meanwhile, we used the C2f module to replace the original C2 module to capture rich gradient flow information. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieved a mAP@50 of 82.36% for fire detection. In addition, we also conducted a comparison test between datasets with and without labeling information for fire-like objects. Our results show that labeling information significantly reduced the false-positive detection proportion of fire-like objects incorrectly detected as fire objects. Our experimental results show that the CBAM and C2f modules enhanced the network's feature extraction ability to differentiate fire objects from fire-like objects. Hence, our approach has the potential to improve fire detection accuracy, reduce false alarms, and be more cost-effective than traditional fire detection methods. Climate change represents a vital public health challenge, resulting in serious impacts that require passive strategies in the built environment sector to mitigate such impacts. Such strategies are associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which present a vital need. Consequently, the solar chimney (SC) can be considered as an effective passive strategy to provide energy, thermal comfort, and air ventilation performance. Therefore, this study focused on SC performance and its related significance on air ventilation. This study aimed to bridge the gap in previous studies and indicates the hotspot topics to conduct a conceptual framework with three phases that can integrate various configurations of a SC with various buildings by considering the recent tools of numerical analysis. Thus, a bibliometric analysis based on the Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools within the scope of the SC and air ventilation promotion was accomplished. Then, various configuration parameters related to SC performance-driven air ventilation are provided. The results indicate that further studies are required to develop themes like the "building design" of SC and its associated effects such as air quality and ventilation, in addition to "numerical analysis" and "optimization" in terms of hotspot topics and the potential for future consequences. Additionally, limited configurations of previous studies provide promising investigations resulting in several applications including many zones and floors that can be achieved by the proposed conceptual framework. Various insights and possibilities can promote numerous configuration parameters related to SC performance-driven air ventilation promotion, which serves as research guidance for designers and specialists toward the mitigation of climate change impacts and attaining the SDGs. We formulate the mathematical model of directional crystallization of a binary melt with a mushy layer (region) between purely solid and liquid phases. This model is complicated by melt convection and pressure-dependent phase transition temperature. Approximate analytical solutions to this nonlinear moving-boundary problem are constructed. Namely, the concentration of impurity, fraction of solid phase, mushy region thickness, average fluid velocity, primary interdendritic spacing, mean radius of a chimney, and a characteristic distance between chimneys in a mushy region are found. Using this analytical solution, we describe the mushy region structure near the inner core boundary of the Earth, which is consistent with computer simulations and estimates existing in recent literature. A scheme illustrating the mushy region arrangement with chimneys at the inner core boundary of the Earth is presented. The photovoltaic evaporative chimney is a novel solar-cooling system that serves a double purpose: it increases the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) panels and it cools down a water stream which can be used to dissipate the heat from a refrigeration cycle. One of the major issues arising from the operation of the chimney is the temperature stratification in the panel due to the movement of the air in the chimney. This effect can trigger the activation of the bypass diodes of the module, creating local maximum power points (MPP) that can compromise the grid-tied inverter tracking. To fill this gap, this paper deals with the design and implementation of an I–V curve measurement system to be used in the performance analysis of the system. The I–V curve tracer consists of a capacitive load controlled by a single board computer. The final design includes protections, capacitor charging/discharging power electronics, remote commands inputs, and current, voltage, irradiance, and temperature sensors.The results show that the modules bypass diodes are not activated during the tests, and no local MPPs appear. The paper examines the effect of the solar chimney's stack height, depth, width and inlet position on the interior performance (air temperature and speed at 1.20 m height above the ground) as well as proposes an optimal tropical solar chimney design. Simulations show that the output air temperature remains constant while the solar chimney's width is the most significant factor influencing output air speed. The solar chimney's inlet position has limited influence on the output air speed although regions near the solar chimney's inlet show an increase in air speed. Furthermore, a regression model is developed based on the solar chimney's stack height, depth and width to predict the interior air speed. To optimize solar chimney in the tropics, the recommendation is to first maximize its width as the interior's width, while allowing its stack height to be the building's height. Aiming at the problem of displacement of collapse direction caused by the impact of the high-rise reinforced concrete chimney in the process of blasting demolition, combined with the monitoring methods such as high-speed photography observation, piezoelectric ceramic sensor, and blasting vibration monitor, the impact process of the 180 m high chimney was comprehensively analyzed. The results show that the chimney will experience multiple 'weight loss' and 'overweight' effects during the sit-down process, inducing compressive stress waves in the chimney. When the sit-down displacement is large, the broken reinforced concrete at the bottom can play a significant buffering effect, and the 'overweight' effect gradually weakens until the sit-down stops. The stress of the inner and outer sides of the chimney wall is obviously different in the process of collapsing and touching the ground. The waveform of the monitoring point of the piezoelectric ceramic sensor is divided into three stages, which specifically characterizes the evolution process of the explosion load and the impact of the chimney. The vibration induced by explosive explosion is mainly high-frequency vibration above 50 Hz, the vibration induced by chimney collapse is mainly low-frequency vibration below 10 Hz, and the vibration characteristics are obviously different. In the process of blasting demolition and collapse of high-rise reinforced concrete chimney, due to the impact of sitting down, the wall of the support tube is subjected to uneven force, resulting in the deviation of the collapse direction. In practical engineering, the control measures of chimney impact, blasting vibration, and collapse touchdown vibration should be fully strengthened to ensure the safety of the protection target around the blasting demolition object. Smart, and ultra-low energy consuming Internet of Things (IoTs), wireless sensor networks (WSN), and autonomous devices are being deployed to smart buildings and cities, which require continuous power supply, whereas battery usage has accompanying environmental problems, coupled with additional maintenance cost. We present Home Chimney Pinwheels (HCP) as the Smart Turbine Energy Harvester (STEH) for wind; and Cloud-based remote monitoring of its output data. The HCP commonly serves as an external cap to home chimney exhaust outlets; they have very low inertia to wind; and are available on the rooftops of some buildings. Here, an electromagnetic converter adapted from a brushless DC motor was mechanically fastened to the circular base of an 18-blade HCP. In simulated wind, and rooftop experiments, an output voltage of 0.3 V to 16 V was realised for a wind speed between 0.6 to 16 km/h. This is sufficient to operate low-power IoT devices deployed around a smart city. The harvester was connected to a power management unit and its output data was remotely monitored via the IoT analytic Cloud platform "ThingSpeak" by means of LoRa transceivers, serving as sensors; while also obtaining supply from the harvester. The HCP can be a battery-less "stand-alone" low-cost STEH, with no grid connection, and can be installed as attachments to IoT or wireless sensors nodes in smart buildings and cities. The present paper studies the performance of a tuned mass damper (TMD) installed in a 183 m tall chimney located at the edge of the wake shed by another chimney. Numerical and experimental results are available. For the simulations, wind action is considered by solving several 2D flow problems on a selected number of horizontal planes, in the transverse direction to the stacks. On such planes, Navier-Stokes equations are solved to estimate the fluid action at different positions of the chimneys and standard interpolation techniques are applied in the vertical direction. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach is used to consider the moving domain, and a fractional-step scheme is used to solve the fluid field. For the structural modelling, chimneys are meshed using 3D beam finite elements. The time integration procedure used for the structural dynamics is based on the standard second order Bossak method. For each period of time, the fluid problem is solved, the aeroelastic analysis is carried out and the geometry of the fluid mesh of each plane is updated according to the structural movements. With this procedure and model updating techniques, the response of the leeward chimney is evaluated for different scenarios, revealing an interesting dependence of the TMD performance on the wind speed and direction. The effects of different solar radiation intensities, heat flow density of indoor heat sources, outdoor wind speed, and the relative location of indoor heat sources on the natural ventilation performance of solar chimneys are investigated through three-dimensional numerical simulations. The mechanism of the mutual coupling of the solar chimney effect with the outdoor wind and indoor heat source heat plume is explored. The results of the study show that when the structural parameters of the solar chimney are the same, the heat flow density on the surface of the indoor heat source, the outdoor wind speed and the solar radiation intensity all have a gaining effect on the ventilation performance of the solar chimney and the effects of the three on the ventilation of the solar chimney promote each other, when the solar radiation intensity is 200 W/m2, the outdoor wind speed is 1.0 m/s, and the indoor heat source heat flow density increases from 0 to 1 500 W/m2, the solar chimney ventilation volume increases from 0.393 m3/s to 0.519 m3/s, the maximum value of the increase is 32.1%. In the other two cases, the maximum increase in solar chimney ventilation is 176.7% and 33.1%, respectively. Under the same conditions, solar chimney ventilation is optimal when the heat source is in the middle of the room. The presence of outdoor wind, however, affects the optimum design parameters of the solar chimney. Compared to the case where no outdoor wind is taken into account, the optimum inlet width of 0.2–0.3 m for the solar chimney no longer applies with outdoor wind, with the optimum value rising to 0.5 m. In this article, the possibility and the pertinence of using 3D printed polymeric materials for models in modal tests on shaking tables were recognized. Four stages of the research have been linked: The material properties investigation, the field experiment on the modal properties of the reinforced concrete chimney (a prototype), the shaking table tests on the modal properties of the 3D printed polymer model of the chimney, scaled according to the similarity criteria, and the numerical calculations of the FE model of the 3D printed mockup. First, the investigation of the properties of 3D printed polymer materials revealed that the direction of lamination had no significant effect on the modulus of elasticity of the material. This is a great benefit, especially when printing models of tall structures, such as chimneys, which for technical reasons could only be printed in a spiral manner with the horizontal direction of lamination. The investigation also proved that the yield strength depended on the direction of the lamination of the specimens. Next, the natural frequencies of the chimney, assessed through the field experiment and the shaking table tests were compared and showed good compatibility. This is a substantial argument demonstrating the pertinence of using 3D printed polymer materials to create models for shaking table tests. Finally, the finite element model of the 3D printed polymer mockup was completed. Modal properties obtained numerically and obtained from the shaking table test also indicated good agreement. The presented study may be supportive in answering the question of whether traditional models (made of the same material as prototypes) used in shaking table tests are still the best solution, or whether innovative 3D printed polymer models can be a better choice, in regard to the assessment of the modal properties and the dynamic performance of structures. Previous gas hydrate production tests conducted by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GSGM) in 2017 and 2020 indicated the great potential of gas hydrates in the Shenhu Sea area in the Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB), China. In this study, the effects of deposition processes in submarine canyons and the distribution of gas chimneys on gas hydrate accumulation were investigated using high-resolution two- dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) seismic data. Four intact submarine canyons were identified in the study area. Five deepwater depositional elements are closely related to submarine canyons: lateral accretion packages (LAPs), basal lags, slides, mass transport deposits (MTDs), and turbidity lobes. MTDs and lobes with multiple stages outside the distal canyon mouth reveal that the sedimentary evolution of the canyon was accompanied by frequent sediment gravity flows. Gas chimneys originating from Eocene strata are generally up to 3 km wide and distributed in a lumpy or banded pattern. The analysis of seismic attributes confirmed fluid activity in these gas chimneys. Gas hydrates are mainly distributed in ridges among different canyons. Based on the gas sources of gas hydrates and depositional evolution of submarine canyons, depositional processes of sediment gravity flows in submarine canyons and the distribution of gas chimneys significantly affect the accumulation of gas hydrates. Based on these findings, this study establishes a conceptional model for the accumulation of gas hydrate, which can provide guidance in the prediction for favorable gas hydrates zones in the area and nearby. Spatially location and working status of pollution sources are very important pieces of information for environment protection. Waste gas produced by fossil fuel consumption in the industry is mainly discharged to the atmosphere through a chimney. Therefore, detecting the distribution of chimneys and their working status is of great significance to urban environment monitoring and environmental governance. In this paper, we use an open access dataset BUAA-FFPP60 and the faster regions with convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN) algorithm to train the preliminarily detection model. Then, the trained model is used to detect the chimneys in three high-resolution remote sensing images of Google Maps, which is located in Tangshan city. The results show that a large number of false positive targets are detected. For working chimney detection, the recall rate is 77.27%, but the precision is only 40.47%. Therefore, two spatial analysis methods, the digital terrain model (DTM) filtering, and main direction test are introduced to remove the false chimneys. The DTM is generated by ZiYuan-3 satellite images and then registered to the high-resolution image. We set an elevation threshold to filter the false positive targets. After DTM filtering, we use principle component analysis (PCA) to calculate the main direction of each target image slice, and then use the main direction to remove false positive targets further. The results show that by using the combination of DTM filtering and main direction test, more than 95% false chimneys can be removed and, therefore, the detection precision is significantly increased. Nowotny chimney ladder (NCL) phases are intermetallic compounds formed by transition metals and metals of groups 13 and 14. This family can be expanded by combining two p-elements from different groups with those transition metals, for which the corresponding binary NCL phases are unknown. In this paper, we present three new compounds in the V-Al-Ge, Nb-Al-Ge, and Nb-Ga-Ge systems related to the TiSi2 structure type (Sp. Gr. Fddd) obtained with the standard ampule technique. The crystal structures of the new compounds were determined using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. A transition to the CrSi2 structure type was detected upon changing the composition from VAl0.72(2)Ge1.28(2) to VAl1.534(3)Ge0.466(3). According to the 18–n rule, all the compounds are metallic conductors, which was supported by the electronic structure calculations. It was shown that the expected energy gap located above the Fermi level in the vanadium-based NCL compound collapsed into a pseudogap upon the replacement of V by Nb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbes can mediate the precipitation of primary dolomite under surface conditions. Meanwhile, primary dolomite mediated by microbes often contains more Fe2+ than standard dolomite in modern microbial culture experiments. Ferroan dolomite and ankerite have been regarded as secondary products. This paper reviews the process and possible mechanisms of microbial mediated precipitation of primary ferroan dolomite and/or ankerite. In the microbial geochemical Fe cycle, many dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB), sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and methanogens can reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+, while SRB and methanogens can also promote the precipitation of primary dolomite. There are an oxygen respiration zone (ORZ), an iron reduction zone (IRZ), a sulfate reduction zone (SRZ), and a methanogenesis zone (MZ) from top to bottom in the muddy sediment diagenesis zone. DIRB in IRZ provide the lower section with Fe2+, which composes many enzymes and proteins to participate in metabolic processes of SRB and methanogens. Lastly, heterogeneous nucleation of ferroan dolomite on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and cell surfaces is mediated by SRB and methanogens. Aortic arch repair is a challenging intervention. Open surgical repair is still considered the gold standard, but in high-risk patients, it is not always a reasonable option, making endovascular approaches an enticing, when not the only available, alternative for treatment. The strategies more commonly adopted are surgical supra-aortic trunk (SAT) rerouting followed by deployment of a standard thoracic endoprosthesis, chimney techniques, custom-made scalloped, fenestrated, and branched devices, and in situ or physician-modified fenestrations. If we excluded techniques involving SAT rerouting where the arch anatomy is surgically modified in order to make deployment in the aortic arch of a standard thoracic endoprosthesis possible, in the other techniques, one or more SATs are incorporated in the thoracic endoprosthesis. In these cases, no matter what solution is adopted, because of the morphology of the aorta at this level, achieving an ideal sealing is extremely difficult, and endovascular treatments of the arch are burdened by an increased risk of type IA endoleaks. PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched. We identified 1277 records. After reading titles, abstracts, and full texts, we excluded 1231 records. Exclusion criteria were low-quality evidence, abstracts, case reports, conference presentations, reviews, editorials, and expert opinions. A total of 48 studies were included, for a total of 3114 patients. A type IA endoleak occurred in 248 patients (7.7%) with a mean incidence of 18.8% in chimney procedures, 4.8% and 3%, respectively, in fenestrated and branched devices, and 2.2% in in situ fenestration. We excluded from our analysis scalloped technology that is used when the target vessel originates from a healthy landing zone and represents a different anatomical setting. Type IA endoleaks are a concern with all types of endovascular aortic arch repair, and they can compromise the outcomes of the procedure. The rate of type IA endoleaks appears to be significantly higher in chimney procedures. In order to maximize sealing, whenever possible, endovascular repair of the arch should be achieved with custom-made fenestrated devices. However, chimney configurations are still a valuable solution particularly in the emergency setting, although in such a procedure, to guarantee accurate postoperative management and follow-up, an imaging protocol could be useful. Identifying the locations of hydrothermal chimneys across mapped areas of seafloor spreading ridges unlocks the ability to research questions about their correlations to geology, the cooling of the lithosphere, and deep-sea biogeography. We developed a Chimney Identification Tool (CIT) that utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify 1 m gridded AUV bathymetry and identify the locations of hydrothermal vent chimneys. A CNN is a type of Machine-Learning model that is able to classify raster data based on the shapes and textures in the input, making it ideal for this task. The criteria that have been used in previous manual classifications of chimneys have focused on the round base and spire shape of the features, and are not easily quantifiable. Machine-Learning techniques have previously been implemented with sonar data to classify seafloor geology, but this is the first application of these methods to hydrothermal systems. In developing the CIT, we compiled the bathymetry data from two rasters from the Endeavor Ridge—each gridded at a 1 m resolution—containing 34 locations of known hydrothermal chimneys, and from the 92° W segment of the Galapagos Spreading Center (GSC) containing 14. The CIT produced a primary group of outputs with 96% agreement with the manual classification; moreover, it correctly caught 29 of the 34 known chimneys from Endeavor and 10 of the 14 from the GSC. The CIT is trained to identify features with the characteristic shape of a hydrothermal vent chimney; therefore, it is susceptible to the misclassification of unusually shaped cases, given the limited training data. As a result, to provide the option of having a more inclusive application, the CIT also produced a secondary group of output locations with 61% agreement with the manual classification; moreover, it caught three of the four additional known chimneys from the GSC and four of the five from Endeavor. The CIT will be used in future investigations where an inventory of individual chimneys is important, such as the cataloguing of off-axis hydrothermal venting and the investigation of chimney distribution in connection to seafloor eruptions. Featured Application: Precise fault detection and extraction have a prime role in understanding the structural framework in the subsurface for multiple reasons, the major ones being oil and gas exploration, development, production, and civil engineering. 3D-seismic data have increasingly shifted seismic interpretation work from a horizons-based to a volume-based focus over the past decade. The size of the identification and mapping work has therefore become difficult and requires faster and better tools. Faults, for instance, are one of the most significant features of subsurface geology interpreted from seismic data. Detailed fault interpretation is very important in reservoir characterization and modeling. The conventional manual fault picking is a time-consuming and inefficient process. It becomes more challenging and error-prone when dealing with poor quality seismic data under gas chimneys. Several seismic attributes are available for faults and discontinuity detection and are applied with varying degrees of success. We present a hybrid workflow that combines a semblance-based fault likelihood attribute with a conventional ant-tracking attribute. This innovative workflow generates optimized discontinuity volumes for fault detection and automatic extraction. The data optimization and conditioning processes are applied to suppress random and coherent noise first, and then a combination of seismic attributes is generated and co-rendered to enhance the discontinuities. The result is the volume with razor sharp discontinuities which are tracked and extracted automatically. Contrary to several available fault tracking techniques that use local seismic continuity like coherency attributes, our hybrid method is based on directed semblance, which incorporates aspects of Dave Hale's superior fault-oriented semblance algorithm. The methodology is applied on a complex faulted reservoir interval under gas chimneys in a Malaysian basin, yet the results were promising. Despite the poor data quality, the methodology led to detailed discontinuity information with several major and minor faults extracted automatically. This hybrid approach not only improved the fault tracking accuracy but also significantly reduced the fault interpretation time and associated uncertainty. The polychaete Alvinella pompejana lives exclusively on the walls of deep-sea hydrothermal chimneys along the East Pacific Rise (EPR), and displays specific adaptations to withstand the high temperatures and hypoxia associated with this highly variable habitat. Previous studies have revealed the existence of a balanced polymorphism on the enzyme phosphoglucomutase associated with thermal variations, where allozymes 90 and 100 exhibit different optimal activities and thermostabilities. Exploration of the mutational landscape of phosphoglucomutase 1 revealed the maintenance of four highly divergent allelic lineages encoding the three most frequent electromorphs over the geographic range of A. pompejana. This polymorphism is only governed by two linked amino acid replacements, located in exon 3 (E155Q and E190Q). A two-niche model of selection, including 'cold' and 'hot' conditions, represents the most likely scenario for the long-term persistence of these isoforms. Using directed mutagenesis and the expression of the three recombinant variants allowed us to test the additive effect of these two mutations on the biochemical properties of this enzyme. Our results are coherent with those previously obtained from native proteins, and reveal a thermodynamic trade-off between protein thermostability and catalysis, which is likely to have maintained these functional phenotypes prior to the geographic separation of populations across the Equator about 1.2 million years ago. Gas chimneys are one of the most intriguing manifestations of the focused fluid flows in sedimentary basins. To predict natural and human-induced fluid leakage, it is essential to understand the mechanism of how fluid flow localizes into conductive chimneys and the chimney dynamics. This work predicts conditions and parameters for chimney formation in two fields in the SW Barents Sea, the Tornerose field and the Snøhvit field in the Hammerfest Basin. The work is based on two types of models, basin modeling and hydro-mechanical modeling of chimney formation. Multi-layer basin models were used to produce the initial conditions for the hydro-mechanical modeling of the relatively fast chimneys propagation process. Using hydro-mechanical models, we determined the thermal, structural, and petrophysical features of the gas chimney formation for the Tornerose field and the Snøhvit field. Our hydro-mechanical model treats the propagation of chimneys through lithological boundaries with strong contrasts. The model reproduces chimneys identified by seismic imaging without pre-defining their locations or geometry. The chimney locations were determined by the steepness of the interface between the reservoir and the caprock, the reservoir thickness, and the compaction length of the strata. We demonstrate that chimneys are highly-permeable leakage pathways. The width and propagation speed of a single chimney strongly depends on the viscosity and permeability of the rock. High industrial chimney inclination monitoring and analysis is crucial from a stability point of view because, if not maintained, it can pose a great potential hazard for its surroundings. Various modern approaches of chimneys' geometrical parameters determination have been proposed and are actively in use. However, little research regarding the applicability of the unmanned aerial system (UAS)-based photogrammetric approach of chimney structural monitoring has been conducted and a comprehensive analysis with validated methods is lacking. Therefore, this research is focused on the determination of geometrical structural parameters of a masonry chimney whereby two independent methods have been applied. Reference values of the chimney geometrical parameters have been determined by precise total station (TS) measurements and, in relation to them, the applicability of the UAS-based photogrammetric approach is evaluated. Methodologically, the reference and validation values of the chimney geometrical parameters have been determined based on double modeling of the chimney structure. Firstly, cross-sectional elliptical regression has been applied to determine the geometrical values of the chimney at predefined above-ground levels (AGLs). Secondly, the spatial chimney axis has been derived by polynomial regression to determine the inclination of the full chimney structure. Lastly, the structural stability of the chimney is validated based on its axis inclination whereby permitted deviations are determined according to the European Standard EN 1996-1-1:2005. Experimental results of our research show that consistently better results are gained by TS-based surveys and, although the determination of the chimney's geometrical values by the UAS-based approach is certainly possible, great attention must be given to the accuracy of the UAS-generated point cloud (PC) if high accuracy results are needed. Sant'Angelo in Criptis (Santeramo in Puglia, South Italy) is a karst cave located in the Alta Murgia National Park (aspiring geopark), presently degraded, but with signs of intense past visiting activity for worship, as testified by the beautiful wall paintings and the large number of inscriptions and engravings on the cave walls. With the aim to permit the desirable restoration and the following fruition of this ancient geo-cultural heritage, a multidisciplinary investigation of the cave was carried out in this study. The 3D cave model permitted a detailed map of the area and highlighted that the cave vault, although very regular, somewhere presents chimneys that develop upwards, indicating areas where the rock thickness is now very small. The stability analysis indicates that presently, the cave does not show remarkable signs of instability, but block failures, toppling and roof collapse are possible. Archaeometry investigations confirmed the past importance of this holy site, as testified by the overlapping in the paintings of three different pictorial cycles and the use of precious pigments, thus confirming the necessity of preservation through a conservation management strategy for a full future fruition of the cave. Chimneys are structures designed to convey exhaust gases from heating devices to the outside of buildings. The materials from which they are made have a great impact on their fire safety, as well as on the safety of the whole building. As current trends in the construction industry are moving towards improving the environmental impact and fire safety, changes to building materials are constantly being introduced. This also applies to the development of chimney technology, as there is still a recognised need for new solutions when it comes to materials used in the production of chimney systems. This article presents the findings of tests carried out on a chimney made from innovative perlite concrete blocks. Four different perlite concrete blocks that differed in bulk densities were analysed. The obtained results were then compared with widely used leca (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) concrete blocks. The test results confirmed high insulation properties of the perlite concrete block, from which the innovative chimney casing was made. The fire safety level was maintained even in high temperatures that occur during soot fire (1000 °C). These properties were retained despite there being no additional insulation of the flue duct. Even though the thermal load decreased the compressive strength of the chimney blocks, they still displayed sufficient average strength of 4.03 MPa. Additionally, the test results confirmed the possibility of recovering heat from the chimney with the efficiency of 23–30%, which constitutes a considerable increase compared to chimneys made from leca concrete blocks. Non-destructive tests of reinforced concrete chimneys, especially high ones, are an important element in assessing their condition, making it possible to forecast their safe life. Industrial chimneys are often exposed to the strong action of acidic substances, They are negatively exposed to the condensation of the flue gases. Condensate affects the inside of the thermal insulation and penetrates the chimney wall from the outside. This is one reason for the corrosion of concrete and reinforcing steel. Wet thermal insulation settles, and drastically reduces its insulating properties. This leads to an increase in temperature in the reinforced concrete chimney wall and creates additional large variations in temperature fields. This consequently causes a large increase in internal forces, which mainly increase tensile and shear stresses. This results in the appearance of additional cracks in the wall. The acid condensate penetrates these cracks, destroying the concrete cover and reinforcement. Thermographic studies are very helpful in monitoring the changes in temperature and consequently, the risk of concrete and reinforcement corrosion. This simple implication between changes in temperature of the chimney wall and increasing inner forces as shown in this article is particularly important when the chimney cannot be switched off due to the nature of the production process. Methods for interpreting the results of thermovision tests are presented to determine the safety and durability of industrial chimneys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
