In this study, a generalized torque estimation method is proposed for synchronous motors, including surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs), synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs), and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) for building the analytical motor model. The average motor torque is estimated using the Lorentz force by the generated flux density in the air gap to determine the relationships among torque, flux density, and injected current. In the proposed method, the generated flux density is derived step by step by considering the effects of magnetic flux saturation, the stator slot, the rotor barrier, and permanent magnets (PMs) to ensure that the generated average torque complies with the operating condition of the motor. To verify the proposed method, the output torque of finite element analysis (FEA), Maxwell 2D, is compared to the proposed method in a SPMSM. Moreover, a phasor diagram is plotted to determine the mechanism through which torque is generated in SynRMs and IPMSMs. A SynRM and an IPMSM with ferrites PMs are analyzed using the proposed method, FEA, and the experimental results of this study indicate the effectiveness. Consuming energy sources and greenhouse gas emission are one of the most prominent problems of the latest century. Most of the energy consumed globally and carbon dioxide emissions originate from electric motors used in the industry. Therefore, researchers have recently focused on the production of highly efficient, eco-friendly, and low-priced machines: Synchronous Reluctance Machines. In this study, the design and comprehensive Finite Element Analysis of a TLA-SynRM including the effects of the number of conductors per slot and wire diameter directly affecting stator slot fill factor and crucial for obtaining more realistic results from experiments has been initially carried out. Moreover, power factor, saliency ratio, and efficiency of the novel SynRM are enhanced by utilizing a fine-tuning process based on d- and q-axes flux paths. Additionally, the layer structure of the initial design is changed to a double-layer structure to improve the performance of the machine in the fine-tuning process. In the final step of this study, the machine has been manufactured, and experiments have been accomplished. This study has concluded that the novel SynRM have low torque ripple, high power factor, saliency ratio, and efficiency, whose value is within the range of IE5 efficiency class. Recently, non-rare-earth motors are attracting more and more attention due to the booming of the electric vehicle (EV) market and, more importantly, the increasing price of the rare-earth magnet material. This paper focuses on the performance comparison among a commercial interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor and two non-rare-earth motors, including a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) and a permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMaSynRM). The design procedure to develop a high-torque-density, low-torque-ripple and high-efficiency SynRM is presented. Combined with a developed automatic modeling and simulation procedure, the finite element analysis (FEA)-based differential evolution (DE) algorithm is introduced for the SynRM rotor optimization. In order to fully inspire the potential of the SynRM, a novel method to optimize the motor split ratio is proposed under the constraint of the copper loss. In addition, different slot–pole combinations are investigated to maximize the motor torque, and the rotor structure is also dealt with towards the centrifugal stress at the maximum operating speed. Finally, the motor performance comparison is carried out, and the results show that although the SynRM achieves almost 61% cost savings, its poor torque capability, power factor and flux weakening (FW) capability are non-negligible defects. On the contrary, the PMaSynRM exhibits excellent features for the EV applications in terms of cost, torque density, efficiency and FW capability. A general pattern, which can include different types of permanentmagnet (PM) arrangement in PM synchronous motors (PMSMs) is presented. By varying the geometric parameters of the general pattern, the template can automatically produce different types of PM arrangement in the rotor. By choosing the best arrangement of PMs using optimization method, one can obtain a better performance and lower manufacturing cost. Six of the most widely used conventional types of rotor structures can be obtained through the parameter variation of the general pattern. These types include five embedded PM types and a traditional surface-mounted PM type. The proposed approach combines optimization method embedded with finite element method (FEM) for solving the multi-objective optimization for the PM structures. To save computing load, this paper employs a strategy of sub-group optimization, which is on account of the impact levels of the design parameters on the objective functions, and a parallel computation, which is a valid method to shorten the computing time. In this paper, a novel two-phase linear hybrid reluctance actuator with the double-sided segmented stator, made of laminated U cores, and an interior mover with permanent magnets is proposed. The permanent magnets are disposed of in a way that increases the thrust force of a double-sided linear switched reluctance actuator of the same size. To achieve this objective, each phase of the actuator is powered by a single H-bridge inverter. To reduce the detent force, the upper and the lower stator were shifted. Finite element analysis was used to demonstrate that the proposed actuator has a high force density with low detent force. In addition, a comparative study between the proposed linear hybrid reluctance actuator, linear switched reluctance, and linear permanent magnet actuators of the same size was performed. This paper analyzes partial demagnetization faults in a five-phase permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (fPMa-SynRM) incorporating ferrite permanent magnets (PMs). These faults are relevant because of the application of field weakening, or due to high operating temperatures or short circuit currents, the PMs can become irreversibly demagnetized, thus affecting the performance and safe operation of the machine. This paper proposes fault indicators to detect such fault modes with low demagnetization levels between 5.0% to 16.7% relative demagnetization. Four partial demagnetization fault detection methods are tested, which are based on the analysis of the harmonic content of the electromotive force (EMF) under no load conditions, the harmonic content of the line currents, the harmonic content of the zero-sequence voltage component (ZSVC) and the analysis of the power factor (PF). This work also compares the sensitivity and performance of the proposed detection methods. According to the fault indicators proposed in this paper, the results show that the analysis of the EMF, ZSVC and PF are the most sensitive detection methods. In order to improve the efficiency, a line-start synchronous reluctance motor (LS-SynRM) is studied as an alternative to an induction motor (IM). However, because of the saliency characteristic of SynRM, LS-SynRM have a limited power factor. Therefore, to improve the efficiency and power factor of electric motors, we propose a line-start permanent magnet assistance synchronous reluctance motor (LS-PMA-SynRM) with permanent magnets inserted into LS-SynRM. IM and LS-SynRM are selected as reference models, whose performances are analyzed and compared with that of LS-PMA-SynRM using a finite element analysis. The performance of LS-PMA-SynRM is analyzed considering the position and length of its permanent magnet, as well as its manufacture. The final model of LS-PMA-SynRM is designed for improving the efficiency and power factor of electric motors compared with LS-SynRM. The global decarbonization targets require increasingly higher levels of efficiency from the designers of electrical machines. In this context, the opportunity to employ magnetic or semi-magnetic wedges in surface-mounted permanent magnet machines with fractional-slot concentrated winding has been evaluated in this paper, with the aim to reduce the power losses, especially in the magnets. Since an analytical calculation is not sufficient for this evaluation, finite element methods with two different software have been employed, by using a model experimentally validated on a real motor. The effects of wedges with different values of permeability and different magnetization characteristics have been evaluated on flux density, back electromotive force, and inductances, in order to choose the more suitable wedge for the considered motor. Furthermore, a new wedge consisting of different portions of materials with different magnetic permeability values is proposed. A permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance generator (PMA-SynRG) and an induction generator (IG) were compared for portable generator applications. PMA-SynRG with two rotor configurations, namely rotors with ferrite magnet and NdFeB, were designed. Furthermore, a design strategy for both PMA-SynRG and IG is presented with their geometrical dimensions. The machine was designed and results were analyzed using finite element analysis. Results such as flux density, open circuit and full load voltages, torque in generating mode, weight comparison and detailed cost analysis were investigated. In addition, thermal analysis for various ambient conditions (−40 °C, +30 °C, +65 °C) was evaluated for both PMA-SynRG and IG. Furthermore, acoustic versus frequency plot and acoustic pressure level were investigated for both the generators. Finally, the results confirmed that the machine with a higher power-to-weight ratio was the right choice for military applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
