In this paper, a thorough framework for multiobjective design optimization of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is proposed. Selection of stator and rotor pole embrace coefficients is an essential step in the SRM design process since it influences torque output and torque ripple in SRM. The problem of determining optimal pole embrace is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem with the objective of optimizing average torque, efficiency and torque ripple, and response surface models were obtained based on the genetic aggregation method. The results obtained by genetic aggregation response surface (GARS) and the non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) were validated with the finite element method (FEM) model of the initial SRM. The optimized model displayed better efficiency profile over a wide speed range. The initial and optimized models recorded maximum efficiencies of 85% and 94.05%, respectively, at 2000 rpm. The efficiency values of 93.97–94.05% were achieved for the three pareto optimal candidates. The findings indicate the viability of the suggested strategy and support the use of GARS and NSGA-II as useful methods for addressing SRM key challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a new winding configuration theory of conventional and unconventional slot-pole combinations that can be used to configure windings with any slot-pole combination. First, various two-layer windings can be divided into conventional balanced winding (CBW), unbalanced winding (UBW), unconventional even slot winding (UESW) and unconventional odd slot winding (UOSW). In addition, the winding configuration can be divided into two steps—slot sorting and slot distributions to phases—and the rule of winding distribution and connection of the four kinds of windings is given. Moreover, there are four models established corresponding to the four kinds of windings. The air-gap flux density and harmonic of models with double layer flux-barrier PM-assisted rotor and without flux-barrier rotor are analyzed and compared using two-dimensional transient finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of stator magneto motive force (MMF) on torque performance affected by winding configuration is analyzed by comparing air gap magnetic density under two kinds of rotors. The simulation of torque shows that UBW, UESW, and UOSW have a certain reducing effect on torque ripple in PMASynRM. Meanwhile, a brief comparison is made in terms of radial forces and power losses; the effects produced by UBW, UESW, and UOSW compared to CBW in these two aspects are acceptable. Minimizing torque ripple in electrical machines for a given application is not a straightforward task, especially when the application imposes certain constraints. There are many techniques to improve torque ripple, either design-based or control-based. In this paper, a new geometry for switched reluctance machines based on rotor poles skewing is proposed to minimize torque ripple. This paper describes a methodology to design an asymmetrical skew rotor—switched reluctance machine using a multi-objective differential evolutionary algorithm. The main parameters of the optimization process are defined, as is the optimization methodology to obtain an improved design with less torque ripple than a conventional one. Moreover, the analytical formulas used in the optimization method, as well as the optimization technique, are deduced and explained in detail. The mathematical model used to simulate the electrical machine and the power converter are also described. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses were also conducted to assess whether 3D effects (end-effect and axial fringing field) affected the results. Finally, a particular case of a high-voltage direct current-controlled generator in the base of the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) concept or an energy storage system as an electrical machine was analyzed, and the results for the improved configuration were compared with those for the conventional one. Due to the particularity of the synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) structure, a novel high-performance model predictive torque control (MPTC) method was proposed to reduce the high torque ripple and improve the performance and efficiency of the motor. First, the precise parameters of the SynRM reflecting the magnetic saturation characteristics were calculated using finite element analysis (FEA) data, and the torque and flux linkage maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) trajectory was derived by considering the saturation characteristics. Then, an MPTC model of a SynRM with duty cycle control was established, the MTPA trajectory stored in a look-up table was introduced into the control model, and the duration of the active voltage vector in one control cycle was calculated by evaluating the torque error. Finally, an experimental platform based on a SynRM prototype was built, and various performance comparison experiments were carried out for the proposed MPTC method. The experimental results show that the proposed method could reduce the torque ripple of the motor, the performance of the motor was significantly improved under various working conditions, and its correctness and effectiveness were verified. In this paper, a comparison of the simple firing angle modulation method (FAM) and the more advanced torque sharing function (TSF)-based control of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented. The off-line procedure to tailor and optimize the parameters of chosen methods for off-the-shelf SRM is explained. Objective functions for optimization are motor efficiency, torque ripple, and integral square error. The off-line optimization uses a finite element method (FEM) model of the SRM. The model was verified by measurement on the SRM. Simulation results showed that FAM has comparable efficiency to TSF, but has a much higher value of torque ripple. The shift-by-wire (SBW) system in vehicles aims to increase performance, safety, and comfort during driving. Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are simple, resilient, and require only minimum maintenance; these factors make it a good option for use as an SBW actuator. Inherently, SRM generates a higher torque ripple than other AC machines, which can lead to a deterioration of its function. In this paper, a non-uniform air-gap rotor structure combined with the careful positioning of holes near the pole surface is proposed to reduce the torque ripple. The finite element method (FEM) is employed to analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of the design. The proposed motor is manufactured, and experiments are done to verify the performance. The design alone can reduce the torque ripple by 7% and flatten the torque waveform. The experimental result shows that the proposed motor can achieve the desired performance.
