Global warming substantially intensifies hydrologic cycles, causing increasing frequency and magnitude of catastrophic floods and droughts. Understanding the patterns and mechanisms of precipitation in historical periods is pivotal for regional disaster prevention and mitigation. Here, we analyzed the daily precipitation of six stations at the Shimantan Reservoir from 1952 to 2013 to examine precipitation characteristics at different time scales. The Mann–Kendall test, moving t-test, and Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA) were employed to detect the trends and change points in total precipitation amount, frequency, and duration. Influences of atmospheric circulations on precipitation were then explored via cross-wavelet analysis. Our results showed increased average precipitation and decreased precipitation days annually at the Shimantan Reservoir in the past decades. Specifically, increased seasonal precipitation was only detected in summer, while precipitation days were mainly reduced in winter. There was a noticeable increasing to decreasing transition trend in precipitation from July to August, and a transition from decreasing to increasing from June to July in precipitation days. Summer rainfall was predominantly moderate and light, accompanied by shortening and highly fluctuating rainstorm durations. July exhibited the highest precipitation frequency and always experienced rainstorms. The Arctic Oscillation and East Asian summer monsoon showed positive and negative correlations, respectively, with the changes in precipitation at the Shimantan Reservoir. The dry-wet abrupt transition (DWAT) is a typical anomaly of precipitation at the subseasonal scale and may result in a severer and greater hydro-meteorological hazard. This paper identified and examined the DWAT events in terms of precipitation in Poyang Lake basin, including both from dry to wet (DTW) and from wet to dry (WTD), during the period of 1960-2010 and analyzed its characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution and intra- and inter-annual tendencies based on the Mann-Kendall (M-K) test. The results revealed that the DTW was inclined to occur in March, but WTD in July and September; the inter-annual variation of the DWAT index showed a feeble long-term increasing trend in July and a decreasing trend in September with a Z-statistic of 1.81 and -1.44, respectively, although none of these trends achieved the statistical significance level (a = 0.05); the north parts of Poyang Lake basin experienced more DWAT events during the last 50 years in which the occurrence of WTD is more frequent than that of DTW. The Shiyang River Basin is located at the edge of the monsoon wind system of South and Southeast Asia. The hydrochemical characteristics of precipitation are influenced by both monsoon and arid regions. The regression analysis method, comparative analysis, neutralization factor (NF), enrichment factor (EF) and HYSPLIT4 were used to analyze the precipitation samples collected from the upper reaches of the Shiyang River from October 2016 to October 2017. In order to study the hydrochemical characteristics and ion sources of precipitation in this basin. The results, as discussed in this paper, show that the precipitation in the upper reaches of the Shiyang River is mildly alkaline all year round while the neutralization ability of Ca2+ and NH4+ in precipitation is strong. The ion concentration was higher in the dry season than that in the wet season, but the concentration of NH4+ was higher in summer. Furthermore, as the altitude increased, the electrical conductivity (EC) of the precipitation decreased gradually. Influenced by precipitation and rainy days, the wet deposition of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) was higher in the wet season than that during the dry season, and the wet deposition gradually increased with the elevation. In precipitation, the earth's crust is a major source of Ca2+, K+ and Mg2+, the ocean is a major source of Cl−, the ocean and the earth's crust are the sources of Na+, human activities are the main sources of SO42−, NO3− and NH4+, the amount of F− is very small, its sources are natural and human activities. The influence of urbanization on regional precipitation is one of the most important issues in hydrology. This paper selected the North Haihe Basin as the study area and explored the connection between summer precipitation and urbanization index (URBI) based on satellite precipitation and nighttime lights datasets. A moving spatial percentage anomaly method (MSP) was used to signify the local induced enhancement of precipitation (LIEP). Local indicators of spatial association (LISA) clustering for LIEP and URBI based on Bivariate Moran's I coupled with digital elevation model (DEM) segmentation was used to separate the impacts caused by urbanization and terrain uplifting, and thus, the regions of interest (ROI) where the urban induced enhancement of precipitation (UIEP) plays a dominant role were located. A geographically weighted regression (GWR) model was used to reveal the spatial variation of the sensitivity of UIEP to URBI within the ROI. Pearson correlation and cross-wavelet analyses (XWT) were adopted to investigate the teleconnection between UIEP and climate anomalies, using Niño3.4 and SOI as indices. The results indicated that: (1) Urbanization effects on precipitation spatial variation in the upstream mountainous area would be hidden away by topographic factors. (2) From the perspective of the basin, the highest urbanization level areas have the Lowest LIEP, while the suburban areas have the highest LIEP, and the rural areas are in the middle. (3) The UIEP and the URBI are generally negatively correlated within ROI. (4) UIEP versus Niño3.4 and SOI both show a significant common high-power period at a time scale of 2 years. The latest research indicates that there are time-lag effects between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the precipitation variation. It is well known that the time-lags are different from region to region, and there are time-lags for the NDVI itself correlated to the precipitation. In the arid and semi-arid grasslands, the annual NDVI has proved not only to be highly dependent on the precipitation of the concurrent year and previous years, but also the NDVI of previous years. This paper proposes a method using recurrent neural network (RNN) to capture both time-lags of the NDVI with respect to the NDVI itself, and of the NDVI with respect to precipitation. To quantitatively capture these time-lags, 16 years of the NDVI and precipitation data are used to construct the prediction model of the NDVI with respect to precipitation. This study focuses on the arid and semi-arid Hulunbuir grasslands dominated by perennials in northeast China. Using RNN, the time-lag effects are captured at a 1 year time-lag of precipitation and a 2 year time-lag of the NDVI. The successful capture of the time-lag effects provides significant value for the accurate prediction of vegetation variation for arid and semi-arid grasslands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the diurnal variations of various clouds are analyzed using hourly cloud observations at weather stations in China from 1985 to 2011. In combination with merged hourly precipitation data, the relationship between the diurnal variations of clouds and precipitation in the summers from 2008 to 2011 are studied. The results show that the occurrence frequencies of total cloud and various cloud types exhibit significant diurnal variations. The diurnal variations of the occurrence frequencies of altocumulus and stratocumulus show a bimodal pattern, with peaks appearing in the early morning and late afternoon. The early morning peaks of altocumulus and stratocumulus appear earlier in the summer than in the other seasons, while the late afternoon maxima show an opposite trend. The occurrence frequency of nimbostratus peaks in the morning between 07 and 12 LST (local solar time), and the peak value lags 2 to 3 h from west to east along the Yangtze River valley; meanwhile, the diurnal variation shows no clear differences caused by changes in the latitude or seasons. Cumulus shows an afternoon (14 LST) maximum, while cumulonimbus peaks in the late afternoon during 16–20 LST, and both of them present a great diurnal range. Cirrus usually reaches its peak at 17–18 LST, and it differs by 1 to 2 h with a change in the latitude. The results of the study first show that the diurnal variations of precipitation among different regions are dominated by different clouds. The upper reaches of the Yangtze River valley present a midnight precipitation maximum that is mainly dominated by cumulonimbus. For the middle reaches of the Yangtze River valley impacted by nimbostratus, the precipitation peaks in the early morning. In South and Northeast China, the precipitation peaks in the afternoon and is determined by the diurnal variations of convective clouds. In the region between the Yangtze River valley and Yellow River valley, the precipitation peaks in the early morning and afternoon; the early morning peak is mainly determined by stratiform clouds, while the afternoon peak is closely related to convective clouds. The Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement Final Run (IMERGF) product has now been upgraded to Version 4 (V4), which has been available since March 2017. Therefore, it is desirable to evaluate the characteristic differences between the V4 and the previous V3 products. A comprehensive performance evaluation of the errors of the successive V3 and V4 IMERGF products is performed with a comparison of the China daily Precipitation Analysis Products (CPAP) from March 2014 to February 2015. The version 6 Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) research product (which is another Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) based precipitation product) is also used as a comparison in this study. Overall, the IMERGF-V4 product does not exhibit the anticipated improvement for China compared to the IMERGF-V3 product. An analysis of the metrics of annual daily average precipitation over China for the IMERGF-V3 and IMERGF-V4 products indicates a decrease of the relative bias (RB) from 3.70% to -7.18%, a decrease of the correlation coefficient (CC) from 0.91 to 0.89, an increase of the fractional standard error (FSE) from 0.49 to 0.56, and an increase of the root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 0.63 mm to 0.72 mm. Compared to the IMERGF-V3 product, the IMERGF-V4 product exhibits a significant underestimation of precipitation in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau with a much lower RB of -60.91% (-58.19%, -65.30%, and -63.74%) based on the annual (summer, autumn, and winter) daily average precipitation and an even worse performance during winter (-72.33% of RB). In comparison, the GSMaP product outperforms the IMERGF-V3 and IMERGF-V4 products and has the smallest RMSE (0.47 mm/day), highest CC (0.95), lowest FSE (0.37), and best performance of the RB (-2.39%) in terms of annual daily precipitation over China. Due to the lack of available long-term climatic records, data related to past autumn precipitation variability throughout Northwest China, especially high-frequency variation, remains limited. In this study, it was found that inter-annual changes in Qinghai spruce radial growth were significantly and negatively (p < 0.05) correlated to inter-annual differences in precipitation during the late growing season (September-October) at all sampling sites in the upper reaches of the Heihe River. Based on the growth-climate relationship, a reconstruction of the inter-annual variation in September-October precipitation from 1839 was developed. With the help of this reconstruction, we successfully captured increased inter-annual variations in September-October precipitation during 1855-1861, 1892-1902, and 1969-1986. Furthermore, we found that increased precipitation variation might be related to variation in the westerlies and instability in the relationship between the regional westerly and precipitation. Moreover, our reconstructed data significantly correlated to the drought index (i.e., October SPEI_01) and moisture-related parameters (i.e., September-October cloud fraction), suggesting that our reconstructed data could be used as an indicator of the drought condition in the Heihe River Basin during the late growing season. A large decrease in the land surface albedo of the Loess Plateau was observed from 2000 to 2010, as measured using satellite imagery. In particular, ecological restoration program regions experienced a decrease in peak season land surface albedo exceeding 0.05. In this study, we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of variation during the peak season albedo in the Loess Plateau and analyzed its relationships with changes of anthropogenic and natural factors at the pixel level. Our analysis revealed that increasing grassland coverage due to returning rangeland to grassland could lead to a maximum albedo decrease of 0.030 in peak season. This result highlighted the human-induced land use change in driving the decreasing albedo on an annual scale. There was no significant correlation between precipitation change and albedo reduction. Precipitation could influence the spatial pattern of albedo in drought years by influencing the natural vegetation water requirement. However, the role of precipitation was not obvious in the ecological restoration program regions. This article demonstrates the substantial role that land use change could play in regional-scale albedo change and climate. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission has generated global precipitation products of improved accuracy and coverage that are promising for advanced hydrological and meteorological studies. This study evaluates three Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) Hourly products, including the Early-, Late-, and Final-run products (IMERG-HE, IMERG-HL, and IMERG-HF, respectively), over Sichuan Basin of China. This highly complex terrain of the steep mountainous region offers further scrutiny on the quality and applicability of the data. The China Meteorological Precipitation Analysis (CMPA) data from January 2016 to December 2018 are used as the reference for the evaluation. Results show that: (1) At grid scale, IMERG-HL and IMERG-HF outperform IMERG-HE in terms of correlation coefficient (CC) and root-mean-square error (RMSE), but IMERG-HL has smaller relative bias (RB) than that of the IMERG-HF (by 21.16%). IMERG-HF presents the highest probability of detection (POD = 0.52) and critical success index (CSI = 0.32), except for high false alarm ratio (FAR) for light precipitation. (2) At regional scale, IMERG-HF outperforms IMERG-HE and IMERG-HL in annual evaluation in all the metrics except for the serious overestimation as shown in RB (20.18%, 3.84%, and 4.97%, respectively). Its accumulative precipitation deviation mainly comes from moderate precipitation events (1–10 mm/h), while better detection capability is seen in light precipitation (<1 mm/h). Seasonally, IMERG-HF performs the best in winter, while IMERG-HL performs the best in the other seasons. (3) IMERG-HF captures the peak precipitation more accurately in all seasons. In reproducing the diurnal cycle, IMERG-HF performs better in winter, while IMERG-HL performs better in summer and autumn, and IMERG-HE in spring. Low accuracy and coarse spatial resolution are the two main drawbacks of satellite precipitation products. Therefore, calibration and downscaling are necessary before these products are applied. This study proposes a two-step framework to improve the accuracy of satellite precipitation estimates. The first step is data merging based on optimum interpolation (OI), and the second step is downscaling based on geographically weighted regression (GWR); therefore, the framework is called OI-GWR. An Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) product is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of OI-GWR in the Tianshan Mountains, China. First, the original IMERG precipitation data (OIMERG) are merged with rain gauge data using the OI method to produce corrected IMERG precipitation data (CIMERG). Then, using CIMERG as the first guess and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as the auxiliary variable, GWR is utilized for spatial downscaling. The two-step OI-GWR method is compared with several traditional methods, including GWR downscaling (Ori_GWR) and spline interpolation. The cross-validation results show that (1) the OI method noticeably improves the accuracy of OIMERG, and (2) the 1-km downscaled data obtained using OI-GWR are much better than those obtained from Ori_GWR, spline interpolation, and OIMERG. The proposed OI-GWR method can contribute to the development of high-resolution and high-accuracy regional precipitation datasets. However, it should be noted that the method proposed in this study cannot be applied in regions without any meteorological stations. Using composite, regular, and partial regression analyses in the six consecutive seasons from spring of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-/Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)-developing year through summer following the ENSO/IOD mature phase, the individual and combined impacts of El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (pIOD) on the evolution of precipitation in China are diagnosed for the period 1950–2013. It is shown that the seasonal responses of precipitation in China to El Niño and pIOD events, and their relationship with the large-scale atmospheric circulations, differ from one season to another. For the pure El Niño years, there is a seasonal reversal of precipitation over southeastern and northwestern China, with deficient precipitation occurring in these two regions before the onset of anomalous wet conditions in the developing autumn. Meanwhile, North China tends to be drier than normal in the developing seasons, but wetter than normal in the decaying seasons. For the pure pIOD events, southern China suffers a precipitation deficit (surplus) in the developing spring (summer and autumn). Furthermore, both North China and northwestern China experience excessive precipitation in the developing autumn and decaying summer. In addition, there is reduced precipitation in northeastern China during both the developing and decaying summers, whereas increased precipitation occurs in the developing autumn and decaying winter. For the combined years, southern China experiences enhanced moisture supply and suffers from increased precipitation from the developing summer through the subsequent spring, but reduced precipitation in the developing spring and decaying summer. Similar to the pure El Niño, northwestern (North) China becomes wetter than normal after the developing summer (autumn) in the combined years. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the accuracy of the GPM IMERG v5 and the TRMM 3B42 v7, with the reference of 224 rain gauge stations over the Yangtze River basin in China from April 2014 to December 2017. The results showed that: (1) The changing pattern of IMERG v5 was similar to the 3B42 v7, and higher correlations can be found between the satellite-based precipitation products (SPPs) and observed precipitation for the monthly and annual time scale; (2) the IMERG v5 tended to overestimate the distribution range of the main rain band while the 3B42 v7 underestimated the precipitation in Sichuan basin, and the largest differences were found for the precipitation less than 1 mm/d for two SPPs; (3) both of the IMERG v5 and 3B42 v7 overestimated the precipitation in the lower elevation areas (<3000 m), while the opposite was true for areas ≥ 3000 m (RBIMERG v5 = −5.42%, RB3B42 v7 = −1.87%), and the retrieved results of PPDFc index and average precipitation at different altitudes for IMERG v5 were better than 3B42 v7. This study highlighted that IMERG v5 performed generally better than 3B42 v7 in detecting precipitation, especially light precipitation in the Yangtze River basin, indicating the great potential utility in hydrological applications. However, its poor skills when retrieving data for high precipitation events and for detecting complex terrain environments remains, leaving room for IMERG v5 to improve its inversion algorithm. Hubei Province Region (HPR), located in Central China, is a concentrated area of severe convective weather. Three severe convective processes occurred in HPR were selected, namely 14–15 May 2015 (Case 1), 6–7 July 2013 (Case 2), and 11–12 September 2014 (Case 3). In order to investigate the differences between the three cases, the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of cloud–ground lightning (CG) flashes and precipitation, the distribution of radar parameters, and the evolution of cloud environment characteristics (including water vapor (VD), liquid water content (LWC), relative humidity (RH), and temperature) were compared and analyzed by using the data of lightning locator, S-band Doppler radar, ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR), and automatic weather stations (AWS) in this study. The results showed that 80% of the CG flashes had an inverse correlation with the spatial distribution of heavy rainfall, 28.6% of positive CG (+CG) flashes occurred at the center of precipitation (>30 mm), and the percentage was higher than that of negative CG (−CG) flashes (13%). Moreover, the quantity of thunderstorm cells in Case 1 was more than other cases, the peak time of +CG flashes was prior to that of total CG flashes in Case 2 and Case 3, and the time of +CG flashes' peak in Case 2 was prior to that of precipitation at about 2 h. Based on the analysis of the cloud environment, there are three main reasons for the differences of CG flashes and precipitation. Firstly, the structure of the LWC vertical profile and the height of the LWC peak are different, and high LWC makes it difficult for the collision of ice particles to generate electricity. Secondly, the differences between convective available potential energy (CAPE), precipitation, and CG flashes is caused by the sudden increase of VD from 1.5 km to 3 km, and thirdly, the production of CG flashes is very sensitive to RH at the surface layer and the total CG flashes increase as the RH increasing. To avoid more severe impacts from climate change, countries worldwide pledged to implement intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) for emission reductions (as part of the Paris Agreement). However, it remains unclear what the resulting precipitation change in terms of regional extremes would be in response to the INDC scenarios. Here, we analyzed China's extreme precipitation response of the next few decades to the updated INDC scenarios within the framework of the Paris Agreement. Our results indicate increases in the intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation (compared with the current level) in most regions in China. The maximum consecutive five-day precipitation over China is projected to increase ~16%, and the number of heavy precipitation days will increase as much as ~20% in some areas. The probability distributions of extreme precipitation events become wider, resulting in the occurrence of more record-breaking heavy precipitation in the future. We further considered the impacts of precipitation-related extremes and found that the projected population exposure to heavy precipitation events will significantly increase in almost all Chinese regions. For example, for heavy precipitation events that exceed the 20 year baseline return value, the population exposure over China increases from 5.7% (5.1–6.0%) to 15.9% (14.2–16.4%) in the INDC-pledge scenario compared with the present-day level. Limiting the warming to lower levels (e.g., 1.5 °C or 2.0 °C) would reduce the population exposure to heavy precipitation, thereby avoiding impacts associated with more intense precipitation events. To obtain independent, consecutive, and high-resolution precipitation data, the four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) method was applied to directly assimilate satellite precipitation products into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The precipitation products of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission 3B42 (TRMM 3B42) and its successor, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM IMERG) were assimilated in this study. Two heavy precipitation events that occurred over the Huaihe River basin in eastern China were studied. Before assimilation, the WRF model simulations were first performed with different forcing data to select more suitable forcing data and determine the control experiments for the subsequent assimilation experiments. Then, TRMM 3B42 and GPM IMERG were separately assimilated into the WRF. The simulated precipitation results in the outer domain (D01), with a 27-km resolution, and the inner domain (D02), with a 9-km resolution, were evaluated in detail. The assessments showed that (1) 4D-Var with TRMM 3B42 or GPM IMERG could both significantly improve WRF precipitation predictions at a time interval of approximately 12 h; (2) the WRF simulated precipitation assimilated with GPM IMERG outperformed the one with TRMM 3B42; (3) for the WRF output precipitation assimilated with GPM IMERG over D02, which has spatiotemporal resolutions of 9 km and 50 s, the correlation coefficients of the studied events in August and November were 0.74 and 0.51, respectively, at the point and daily scales, and the mean Heidke skill scores for the two studied events both reached 0.31 at the grid and hourly scales. This study can provide references for the assimilation of TRMM 3B42 or GPM IMERG into the WRF model using 4D-Var, which is especially valuable for hydrological applications of GPM IMERG during the transition period from the TRMM era into the GPM era.
